Meet Iceland's National Drink, Brennivín, Nicknamed 'The Black Death'

"Midgardur by Center Hotels' Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar in Reykjavik offers a unique experience for those wanting to try Iceland's national drink, Brennivín. Known as 'The Black Death,' the spirit is served at room temperature and offers a taste journey with notes of cumin and caraway. Bartender Király Lazos explains the drink's flavor profile and suggests that it might grow on those who try it multiple times. The bar also serves a signature cocktail, the Pink Puffin, made with pineapple juice, strawberry puree, and Brennivín." - Lauren Breedlove

Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar is the hotel restaurant for Miðgarður by Center Hotels and after checking in cold, wet and very tired after a huge day touring the south coast in the pouring rain, we walked in here with no reservation and were treated to a superb meal. The seats were all taken so they found us a spot in the hotel lobby, but the service didn’t falter, the food came out fast, and they dealt with the request for a gluten free meal superbly. The set menu here is the best bargain in Reykjavik. For little more than the cost of a main at similar places, they deliver 3 courses of top quality food. After checking out the prices and the menus elsewhere, we decided to come back here the next night, and had another top quality meal.

We visited twice in the week as we were so impressed first time round. The food was very well prepared - lovely flavours, great ingredients, and very nicely presented.

We were a group of eight and went for brunch with bottomless drinks. The food was delicious, the service was seamless, and the atmosphere was perfect for a fun, relaxed brunch with friends. The staff were absolutely exceptional — friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great brunch spot! Big shoutout to the amazing staff you guys made our brunch! Big thanks to Marco Tadeusz and Diego

Nice folks. Cod (fish of the day) was very nice and tasty - had a bell pepper sauce and mild pureed sweet potato. Lamb was ordered med rare but came out over well done. Flavors were ok but wouldn’t order it again. Definitely a great value for a weekday lunch.

We were all very impressed with the quality of the food here and the service. The plates are beautifully presented and the food well cooked. Much more than just a kitchen and bar and yet exactly what a modern kitchen and bar should be.

Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar – 5/5 Stars Had a fantastic dining experience at Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar in Reykjavík. The food was really good—beautifully presented (even though I forgot to snap a picture before digging in 😄) and even better tasting! What truly stood out was the amazing service. Our waiter was friendly and professional, and I overheard an issue at the next table—the head waiter handled it quickly and respectfully, which was very impressive to see. A great atmosphere, delicious food, and a team that genuinely cares about the guest experience. Highly recommended!

Celebrated one of our evenings here whilst on our honeymoon. We decided on the set menu from the sea and it was gorgeous. The waiter went out of his way to swap a pudding for me as I hate lemon, there was a bit of banter but he swapped it and once he knew it was our honeymoon we received a complimentary glass of fizz each. Highly recommend, the food and service was excellent
