I came here as a solo diner and had no reservation. I was seated fairly quick. I visited on a Wednesday evening and there were still tables available at 7 when I walked in (kitchen closes at 7:30 on Wednesday). The menu, as others have shared, is on a board when you walk in. You order at the bar area, at the little booth. Both men who were working did not speak English, but they were welcoming. I ordered the spätzel and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not well-versed in German cuisine but like I said, I really enjoyed my dinner. Portion was perfect. I ate slow (was there for 2 hours!!), enjoyed my beer, and was able to watch the live 3 piece music group (bass, violin, guitar). I did not feel rushed (maybe because kitchen was already closed by the time I finished eating?). the atmosphere was cozy. Wish I knew the German language so I could learn more about the text written on the walls and also ask questions about the books and pictures. It was really lovely. I’d recommend this place and I’d return if given the opportunity in the future!

You have to book to be sure of a table. it must be the "lonely planet write-up" effect. The decor is fascinating and the staff are very accommodating but sadly the food was OK but not up to the vibe that was promised. When we couldn't get a table the first night, we chanced on a place a little further down the road that had amazing food - Oh Panama!!!

Very good service and nice vibe, but the food is not that great. I had a Herring Sandwich and it was quite average. My wife had a schnitzel and it was too dry. Beer and cheesecake were great though.

Feels as if you’re transported to yesteryear. Great traditional dishes at a reasonable price. I ordered the rinder goulash and cheesecake and was not disappointed in the least. The portions are just right for one person, so if your thinking of splitting, you’re out of luck. Loved the aesthetic and mood. Candles at each table and the colors were great.

The service was quick and it would be worth it waiting 2h for the food because it was good. The people are were very friendly to, and the food was delicious. The Snzichel was also very tasty, with no hard ends and things.

Loved the neighborhood bistro atmosphere. Food is not pricey and they are willing to serve mini flight size beer if you ask. We had wiener schnitzel, pumpkin soup and beef goulash. All mains done well but their sides are even better. Both their potato salad and spaetze were very tasty. We had coffee and their creme caramel but they were just so-so. We stayed for quite a while comparing to all the tables around us but the server didn't rush us. Servers didn't speak English but they really tried to communicate, even when the place was busy and packed. Such a plus. 36 Euro for 2 of us. The only setback: menu is listed by the door once you walk in, in German only. (We had to take a snapshot and then decide while seated and felt very pressured to order soon as the place was packed) You'll have to take your pick there then order at the counter but servers will bring food to you. You pay at the counter when you leave. Anyhow we still enjoyed our meal.

Very nice place to eat, authentic and good. The price is very affordable and the taste is extraordinary. Very nice service.

Google
It is a nice authentic place. The staff are polite but not very friendly tbh. The food was average and a bit overpriced (food was not cheap in Berlin overall) but I understand that they charge mostly for the nostalgic atmosphere and the history of the place. Overall it's okay to try it one time.

Yelp
Super cozy place with a unique feel, simple menu and affordable prices. My husband and I went here after seeing such high reviews on google. We arrived around 6pm on a Thursday. Even though there were reserved cards on every table, we were seated at one with an 8:00pm reservation (plenty of time for us to eat). We noticed they did this with many walk ins. The guys running the place are very nice and welcoming. I'm not sure the exact history of the location, but inside looks like a mix of an antique book store and museum. Really cool! We hadn't had any German food yet on our trip so we figured this would be the place. We ordered the beef goulash with homemade noodles and home made noodles with cheese and pork with a side salad. The order came out pretty quick. The dishes were simple and nothing fancy but with the prices it was nothing to complain about. My husband enjoyed his beef very much saying the beef was very tender and tasty. My done of noodles, cheese and pork was interesting but good!!! I'm glad my dish had an accompanying salad to balance out the rich noodles. As we ate, the place got more full. We didn't stick around too long because of the reservation time but this would be a great place to hang out and enjoy company. All the mains ranged from €6-€13, location easy to find and clean bathrooms!!

Yelp
Took the advice of other Yelpers to come here and we were not disappointed! The decor is adorable, cozy, and the service is really friendly. The food was really great, and with good portions for reasonable prices. It's also conveniently located near a lot of the downtown sights. Everything is very German, which was really important to us, and the beer comes in giant mugs for tiny prices. Amazing! Also, the whole spot is decked out in the theme of Joseph Roth-Diele, who was a Jewish Journalist. It's a great excuse to have good food in a nice place and learn a bit about some history you probably wouldn't have been otherwise exposed to! Great recommendation!

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great value, very accommodating (we did call ahead by about an hour for a reservation), CASH ONLY, restaurant that serves hearty German dishes. We enjoyed wiener schnitzel with potato salad and Sauerbraten (nice taste, but not fall apart tender as we've had in other restaurants). Decor was very interesting- lots of old photos.

Yelp
If you are passing by this café, u need to go in. If not you are missing one of the best decored reastaurant i have ever seen. The interrior is cozy and fantastic! Besides this loveley avenue, you also can order some diner ;). Beer comes in big muggs, like a real german. The menu is simple and really german. I didnt had a lot of choice as a vegetarian. Starter we took the flammkuchen :) and main my bf had schnitzel en i had kazespatzle ^^. Spatzle is like a pasta. It was so nice! I really liked it, Maybe it was Because of the atmosphere Maybe because of the food.. But it is definitly a golden couple!!

Yelp
A literature-inspired, checked-tableclothed, real-candles kinda spot. Tasty traditional German food served simply. Really fills up at dinner time (even on a Monday.) The place offers an additional menu allowing you to purchase books, many written by Joseph Roth. Overall a comfortable, old-fashioned neighborhood place. It's CASH ONLY but reasonably priced -- stop by the ATM on the way.

Yelp
Fantastic ambience and food. Very welcoming staff. A welcome oasis in Berlin! We had good Dunkel, Wiener schnitzel and spatetzel. All very good. Bonus music played by a couple of talented musicians.... in for three songs by the piano and off again. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Great service and ambience, really liked this place. We ordered a "small" Schniztel & the Roulade (rolled meat). The prices are great and portions very big! I'd love to go back for the live music soon too. Note: cash only.

Yelp
Very cool place, seemed quite, well, German, nice people, good food. It appears to have been there a long time. The menu is written in German but was patiently explained to us. Recommend.

Yelp
Very original place! We came there just by coincidence as restaurant we picked up for lunch was closed. The inferior is very nice, restaurant itself small and very crowded. But this creates lively atmosphere of this place. Small tables, close to each other, wooden walls. The had only "day selection" of dishes, where half of it was pork "schwienfleisch wiemerschitzel". But this were really good. There were some salads and side dishes as well. We also tried home made apple juice. So will definitely be back deliberately there, when passing by this neighborhood ! Be careful, this is cash only business ;-)

Yelp
Neutral rating as I was unable to actually eat at the restaurant.. wanted to make sure everyone knew to please make a reservation before going.. I was just there at 7pm and was refused seating... and please practice some German before you go!!

Yelp
Stayed nearby, in nice cheap hotel, so this was the place to eat. Nice food, fair prices, waiters were sourpusses, but they probably get slapped for not selling enough...(teehee)

Yelp
Really funny nice staff, very full restaurant, very good wine. Food was also good for a very good price. Generally very yummy, only problem was food was quite rich although definitely authentic.

Yelp
Probably the best meal we had in Berlin. I had some sort of beef dish that came with Spaetzle Nice that it wasn't a big chain, this place has some down home charm. Staff was nice.

Yelp
This was a home run. Atmosphere cozy and authentic. Food tasted good and homemade, like there was a grandmother cooking in the kitchen. Music too. Loved it.

Yelp
I liked the Joseph-Roth-Diele. Enter this place at lunch time and you will have to fight for a space, but it's well worth the fight They have really hearty food with a comforting home-made feel to it. Today there were just two daily dishes available, I think this is usually the case. I went for the Leberkäse, a German meat specialty, which was covered with a fried egg, sunny-side up and served with very tasty mashed potatoes and juicy spinach. At EUR3.95 for this main course (the other main course was also EUR3.95) I would definitely say it was good value. I added a large beer for another EUR3. Alternatively, I would have chosen a large Apfelschorle, which also costs EUR3. Transparent pricing system is all I can say!

Yelp
Fantastic and classy place in a bustling and accessible area. Food was excellent and there was a very nice atmosphere accented by live piano and violin. Seating is a bit tight but groups of 2-4 will do fine. I ordered the Rinderroulade mit Spätzle (beef roll with soft noodles) and my wife got the Käsespätzle mit Speck ... basically homemade mac & cheese with soft German noodles (note to fellow rookie German speakers: "mit Speck" means "with bacon" ... you're welcome). Both were excellent: perfect size, flavorful käsespätzle, and the rinderroulade just fell apart at the touch; we devoured everything. I would definitely eat here again and strongly recommend visiting. English speakers will be fine here.
