I've heard about Josephine Street from friends and it's always gotten great reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I got the chicken fried chicken plate with their house fries and it was terrific, the crust was flaky and flavorful the chicken was succulent and the gravy delicious. I got the house fries and they were good maybe a touch more seasoning but very good and the onion ring was a good size and thickness and what I really enjoyed was once I bit into it the crust didn't fall apart. My wife got the 9oz prime rib steak and it was cooked to perfection a nice char with a hot pink center. She also got the load mash potatoes and they were creamy and delicious with a good texture. We also got the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream blue bell I think and it was dessert heaven. Will definitely be back to try out more items.

Came in town for the weekend and found this awesome little gem! I got their daily shrimp special and let me tell you it didn’t disappoint, the shrimp were BIG! We also had chicken fried chicken, mashed potato’s and their French fries! Everything was seasoned well and tasted really good! Will be making it a go to when we come back in town! Great service as well, refills kept coming! Definitely recommend!

I had a great dinner at Josephine Street…nothing super fancy and my two favorite things were the country style green beans and the tree in the middle of the restaurant! Overall old school vibe was cool and great customer service. I see why it’s been around since 1974!

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our dinner here yesterday evening. The service from our server JOCELYN was top notch. She was extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. She was very quick to take our orders for drinks, appetizers, and entrees (but didn’t rush us) and always kept our drinks filled with refills. The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant itself is very quaint and cozy. The food was delicious. I ordered the chicken fried steak with white gravy and my boyfriend ordered the El Rey burger and we both thoroughly enjoyed them as well as our Cajun-seasoned French fries, mashed potatoes, and onion rings. There are so many great options in the menu it was so hard to choose just one thing. We will 100% be back to try more in the future :) best part is.. it was extremely AFFORABLE. We both ate for a grand total of only $50… very low prices considering the location at the Pearl. I highly recommend to all of my friends & family.

Google
First time here..So many delicious options we wanted to try everything. Based on other reviews, the fried catfish was recommended and looked delicious. It was a bit greasy for my liking but not bad at all. Next time I’ll try the cajun chicken. The onion rings were tasty and the chicken fried steak was better than others I’ve tried. Not super chewy like some I’ve had in the past. The fried potatoes was seasoned and very good! All employees seemed friendly, attentive, and seemed happy to be there. The vibe was rustic and casual

We live outside of SA now and had not been to Josephine Street in about 10 years. We were in central SA today and stopped by for happy hour and an early dinner. We sat at the bar with our awesome bartender Carson! She was so great! Food was still amazing.. chicken fried steak and Chicken Verde 👍 Plus apps were 1/2 price for happy hour. Great visit and we will be back soon… no more 10 year wait!!

Yelp
I cane here years ago with a large group and decided to come again, just a party of two. They have bigger servings and delicious food. I also had a steak and grilled shrimp (not pictured) which was so delicious. The grilled shrimp was very well seasoned and flavorful! There is a medium sized parking area right next to the restaurant, they validate parking for three hours which is super nice. It was a really fun and comforting environment. Good for large or small parties and family friendly. The service was super fast and everything came out great!

Yelp
So, we got this recommendation from a local first due to their steaks then second becuz they also provide a bus to the Spurs games for eating with them. So we get there around 5pm. We are asked if we are joining the bus. We said yes, if we are on time. They said absolutely. We sat down, service was a bit slow, but they came to the table and got our drink orders by 515 and ask if we are ready to order. (We are told the bus leaves at 615) i said, are u sure we will have time to order and eat and go. Again, they say ABSOLUTELY. Time goes by and we need another drink......when she comes with the drink, I mention I'm getting worried and ask what's the ETA.on the food. She says she will check. Let me say, the waitress was very nice and tried. But at about 10 min til departure the food is still not here. She said she will talk to her manager. Not to draw out the whole interaction explaining how I basically just paid $42 for a bus ticket, the manager made it right. She was not rude, she was just disheveled from the busy evening. And I appreciated it. My takeaway and opinionated advice would be to maybe change the requirement of an entree that takes time to a dollar amount required to obtain a ticket. So I could have ordered drinks and appetizers that would have actually resulted in more money spent and would have had a positive experience. Another is to have a cutoff time for the bus as well. They know their speed, the patrons don't. Other than that, everyone was kind and tried and just got slammed and couldn't budge on the requirement of an entree that must be ordered that caused the issues. It's a pretty cool experience! If they hammer the issues it would make for a really cool evening. Give it a try. I really wish I tried the food everyone raves about it.

Yelp
Genevieve was a delightful server! Terrific service! Onion rings were amazing! Beef tenderloin sandwich so moist! Get the fresh broccoli with lemon butter. 5 star visit!

Yelp
The food was amazing! Erika was such a delight! She made our first time here and my husband's birthday such a treat! Great steaks, amazing onion rings and fantastic patio!

Yelp
Went for a quick get together with family on a Friday evening. We were a group of 6 and got seated within 15 mins after arriving. Waitress was pleasant and food came out quickly considering the restaurant was packed. I had the chicken fried steak. Meat was tender and while crust was a little on the salty side it had good flavor. Plate came with one side, I ordered green beans. Portion was perfect for one person, everyone cleaned their plates. Shared the peach cobbler a la mode. Peaches were fresh tasting not from a can or overly sweet. Cobble had nice cinnamon flavor with crumble type topping, ice cream was creamy vanilla bean flavor. Overall good experience and will go back to try something different.

Yelp
We are from out of town and this place was recommend. Decent bourbon selection and the old fashioned was pretty good. It was served on a craft ice cube. I would say missing the orange peel. It was served with a small orange wedge. I had the Acapulco Chicken and green beans. Nothing fancy about the plating but the food was dynamite. It seems to be an old house with a tree growing through the middle of it. Our server was nice and attentive, but not overbearing. I'd be back tomorrow if I could.

Yelp
We decided to give them a try. We were seated immediately on a Saturday evening which was nice. We immediately noticed that the place is really, really loud. We thought it would be quieter eating inside instead of outside and hearing all of the freeway traffic - but it's probably louder (people and TVs) inside. The fried bacon wrapped jalapeño was very good. It's fried in cornmeal so know that ahead of time - we liked it but some folks don't. The dip was also very good - some type of jalapeño ranch with a hint of lime. I had the catfish with onion rings and coleslaw. The catfish was a generous portion and is fried in cornmeal breading. It was good. The coleslaw is mostly vinegar based with a hint of mayonnaise - it was good as well. My wife had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and green beans. All were good and prepared as they should be. The potatoes themselves were bland, but the gravy helped them out. We shared a peach cobbler for dessert. The cobbler has a cinnamon flavor and oats for the cobbler - different but a good taste. The food was good - nothing to write home about; nothing so good it would make me absolutely want to come back - but it was all good. When we got our check, I asked if they offer a military discount and our server said they do. She said she needed to get a new check because the manager needs to approve it. After waiting for 15 minutes, we finally told her to forget the discount. She apologized and said nobody could find the manager - okaaayyy - that's a BIG issue if nobody can find the manager?! Would we go back - maybe but not highly likely.

Yelp
Steak was cooked great and staff was kind and courteous. The outside area was nice to sit at and recommend for large parties which I had the day I went. The inside sitting area is small in my opinion.

Yelp
Friday nite dinner and drinks at Josephine was phenomenal!. Happy hour fall cocktails were a hit and catfish dinner never disappoints!! Atmosphere is the usual, loud and cheery but to my amazement i heard many of my fav rock tunes. Loved it and it totally made my friday night Thankyou Josephine crew for a fabulous evening!! Ps: the happy hour ROYAL PUMPKIN spice with Crown Royal was super yummy!!

Yelp
In the Pearl area and in the mood for some comfort food I decided to stop by Josephine Street for lunch. Already familiar with the menu, I ordered the fried catfish plate w/the house fries on the side. My order came out fairly quickly and it smelled great. The fish was fried a golden brown and was crunchy on the outside and moist/flaky on the inside. The batter itself is well season and brought the flavor. The house cocktail and tartar sauce are also really tasty and add another flavor profile. The house fries were soft and moist and didn't last long. Overall, for comfort food you can't beat Josephine Street and I'll continue to come here as my schedule allows especially with winter rolling around the corner.

Yelp
Went for a birthday dinner and had an amazing experience! The steak was tender and tasty, the potatoes were perfect! Everyone in our party had a great time. The queso was out of this world! Parking is compensated up to three hours! And there's a TREE inside the resto! I love this place.

Oscar R.

Yelp
Onion rings were cooked to perfection! Best I've had! The beef tenderloin salad was spot on! Great service. Super clean and spacious. Thank you for a great dinner experience. We shall be back!

Yelp
Great food! I had the steak and the artichoke dip were great. The only critique I could give was at the drinks could've been made better though.

Yelp
Over 40 years in San Antonio...check Decent location and some free parking...check Tasty food choices and apps...check Good service and helpful staff...check Tree as part of inside décor...check All of these qualifiers make Josephine Street a worthwhile stop in San Antonio, especially when looking for flavorful food. Their prices are also on the affordable side, which is more than can be said for most of the locales near The Pearl. It may have to do with the fact that Josephine has existed longer than most of the newly developed bougie Pearl eateries. When it comes to the food, Josephine is down to earth comfort food. Nothing fancy, but pretty good. Some of my favorites are the Spinach Artichoke Dip, with tortilla chips, the Deep-Fried Onion Rings, the Creamy Spinach Salad (dressing on the side for a healthier option) and their amazing Del Rey Burger, which comes with one of their delicious onion rings. This is the place to visit if you are feeling like some rich, tasty food in a landmark location.

Yelp
Exceptional service, made us feel like extended family. Ma & pa environment is hard to beat. Best meal we've had out in awhile! My filet was perfectly cooked and the seasonal pumpkin cocktail was divine!

Yelp
The service was not good. The lady that serve me, wasn't nice. The manager came over to serve our table. After I explained the situation. I will never go back there again.
google avatar

Yelp
Verde sauce is amazing. Chicken is very fatty. Batter on onion rings is amazing. No big ice old fashioned. Garlic bread is amazing. Burger is delicious - bacon, meat and bread delicious. Watermelon margarita was fantastic.

Alma H.

Yelp
This is my second time here, giving it another chance. Over priced food. T-bone steak lemon flavored (had better steaks at Cracker Barrel and Longhorn steakhouse) so disappointed Skinless loaded potatoes Liver and onion (soft) Onion rings Queso and sausage Onion rings (disappointed )
google avatar

J T.

Yelp
1 Star for the cold bacon on my turkey "club." 0 stars for the bus driver taking a really bad route, stuck in traffic, late to the Spurs game, plus filling the front seat with two cases of Sprite meant for fan giveaways after the game. No Spurs cheer to start to the trip either.

Yelp
Really loved our visit to Josephine Street. We came on a weekend night and staff was at the top of their game! There was a table that just needed to be cleared off, the host welcomed us, and then got someone to clear the table and then even went to help clear it herself. We sat down and the waitress made sure to ask about parking validation which was very easy. Even though the room was packed, we were still able to hold a conversation and didn't feel rushed by anything around us. Everything we were served was amazing. Husband and I both got steak cooked as requested, well seasoned and great cuts. Really enjoyed their chips sauce trio - and their house made drinks were dilish! Would highly recommend stopping by to try anything on their menu.

Yelp
Josephine street is perfect if you want American comfort food. Chicken fried steak, mac and cheese etc. I had a salad with grilled chicken, and it was good. The side of mushrooms was amazing, they were soft and creamy. The place itself was cool, but the table was a little sticky to be honest and the service was good. I'm only giving it 3 stars because the food was good but it was not amazing and I thought it was a bit overpriced for what it was. If you like fried food, comfort American side dishes and a diner style vibe then this is perfect for you!
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Date night! We started with the chips with sausage and onions with cheese dip. I had a sirloin with mash, and my husband ordered the ribeye with broccoli. The food was delicious the app could have used more cheese sauce, but our food came quickly. The restaurant was clean, and our server was quick. Great place to have a night out.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
Food and service were great but that pay parking service (Metropolis) still charged me even after my server used jer card to validate it on the app. When I disputed the charge via email, Metropolis admitted that the validation didnt take and their camera did not register my vehicle leaving the lot. They issued a "one time courtesy credit" for their mistake but I'm now left wondering if the food and experience are worth the hassle of this parking mess.

Yelp
The food and atmosphere is amazing. The food has been amazing since the 1st day I visited 15 years ago. The waitstaff were very friendly. It's a great family experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Should have higher rating. This place has unmatched atmosphere and the steak sandwich holds my thoughts hostage more often than not. It's a classic San Antonio staple. Also possibly the best burger around. Go and enjoy.

Yelp
Came here after the Tobin Center. Can't believe that we have never been here before. Have eaten all around here, but have somehow never been able to eat in here, and I have been missing out! Get the El Rey burger!!!! The Tomatillo Salsa and chips was also great. Peach Cobbler with ice cream is great! Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Rania N.

Yelp
The service was great and the ambiance was very cute unfortunately the food was really bad. Started off with the chips queso and salsa which was really good My date got a bloody marry that he didn't like The burger and fries were okay, under seasoned I got the chicken fried chicken, something about it was off, also under seasoned. Neither of us finished our food Very disappointed because it's a great location and cute spot but don't think we will be returning

Yelp
I check yelp reviews for places, but I have never left a review myself...until now. I moved to San Antonio from Dallas about 4 years ago and always noticed Josephine St. with it's neon saying "Steak" and "Whiskey." Always thought to myself..."I like steak and I like whiskey, should check that place out. My wife and I finally did today for lunch. It was amazing! One of the best meals I have had in a while. I got the pork chops and loaded mashed potatoes and my wife got the sirloin and a salad. We shared with each other and were very impressed with how good it all was. We also had the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer and my goodness....outstanding. It is a cool little place in a historic building. I definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Cassedy C.

Yelp
I love visiting Josephine Street every time I am in town. Such a unique vibe, they have a tree growing in the middle of the restaurant! The service is quick and sweet. Their menu is endless and offers a mix of Tex Mex and American classics.
google avatar

Vickie M.

Yelp
A cool casual spot in The Pearl with the trunk of a 500 year old oak tree inside. The husband said that his t-bone was excellent & he loved the onion rings.

Betty G.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere if you sit outside. Among other things, my burger was raw inside and had blood on my plate (ew). The server didn't apologize which was strange, she didn't seem to care at all. Overall it was a disappointment, will not go back.
google avatar

Annie G.

Yelp
Just the best steak in town! Perfection every time we go. Simple and the prices aren't bad at all.

Yelp
Girlfriend from Ecuador/NY/Austin wanted to try a steak dinner outside of the regular Salt Grass and Texas Roadhouse and find something that also had a good atmosphere. She scoured the web and all answers pointed to Josephine Street as a must see. Came in at dusk on a Wednesday afternoon. There was a 30 minute wait. They took my phone number and we were able to get a seat at the bar for some drinks. Barbie was behind the bar and she set us up with a Lone Star Beer Light (not many places have that) and a meaty Bloody Mary. Barbie hugged some regulars and they wished one of them farewell. Dunno if it was Barbie (manager) or them leaving but always a good sign to find a place that has history. They set us in the corner where we ordered. Waitress was an all star. Very friendly and accommodating. I got myself a medium rare Ribeye with Pinto Beans and Mashed Potatoes. My gal got chopped Steak (medium)with Queso and Onion Rings. Onion rings were okay. Bit spoiled by Dairy Queen's onion rings I guess. Rest was phenomenal. The Queso was so delicious. Found myself hitting it up regularly for that lil bit of spice Texas style Queso. Steak was delicious. Didn't quite look pink of Medium Rare. Would say Texas Roadhouse is better but it tasted good. Apparently the tree sticking thru the roof has a 500 year history. The interior has a down home feel to it. Good ambiance and made for just the dinner out we needed mid week. Whole thing was about $80, which ain't too bad for all that we got. Will definitely come back around!

Yelp
Love JS. Best liver & onions in the city. Prices are reasonable and parking is validated and free. I've never not found their service to be anything but fast and friendly. Solid bar with a solid pour. Also a huge fan of their wilt salad. Might be the only place in San Antonio who's still.doing them and their recipe and prep is fantastic.
google avatar

Mel L.

Yelp
This was our first stop on the Texas food tour! Can easily say I had the best onion rings of my life here. They were so crispy! Fries were awesome too. I ordered a burger which was so thick and heavy and delicious. I couldn't finish it all and it was great for leftovers! This is a really unique place with the tree growing in the middle of the restaurant. At one point, we saw a cricket by the tree close to our table and we asked the server to get rid of it and she just picked it right up and took it out. Not a common occurrence where we are from. We kill everything in Maryland- HA! Nice place overall. Enjoyed it!

Yelp
Best chicken fired steak I ever had wasn't tough great flavor steak was great also staff was friend and polite
google avatar

Myrna R.

Yelp
My steak was nice and juicy. I didn't care for the green beans. The mashed potatoes were a much better option. I'll be back to try their chicken fried steak!

Yelp
Very small but cozy! Felt like I was at home honestly. My first time here, I just moved to SA a couple of months ago. Our waitress was amazing! She had some great recommendations. We tried the spinach and artichoke dip and it was delicious! She recommended a margarita and it was top notch! Our entrees were hot and full of flavor! We will be back for sure, this is a cool little spot. Don't forget to get your parking validated!

Deb S.

Yelp
Always a treat! A wilt salad, steak, and a maple old fashioned is my go-to order. A+.

Yelp
Fun ambiance and A-OK food. We came on a busy Friday night and managed to snag a small booth in the back. The booth seats were covered in sand and we had to wait awhile to originally get service. However, once our waitress first came to us, she did well with checking in regularly. We had chips and pico de gallo to start. The chips were deliciously crunchy and salty while the pico was alright. I ordered the blackened catfish and green beans as the side. The meal was pretty salty, but overall not bad. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich with the home fries (which were big, thin potato slices) and was unimpressed. Overall, not a bad place to get some inexpensive food and watch a sports game!

Leticia W.

Yelp
Very cute place our waiter was so much fun. We happen to get there about an hour before closing and we had top service from our waiter. Food was hot and delicious.

Yelp
We arrived around 1 pm on a Friday afternoon. We were seated within 5 mins but our server didn't come to our table for over 20 mins. At this time we placed our food and drink order and asked for water. We received our drinks about 15 mins later no water. Another server dropped are food and left before we could ask for anything el se. we only got one salad with no dressing, the fried shrimp special with onion rings not condiments, chicken fried chicken and mashed potato. We were never able to get another round of drinks. The food was all fantastic. But the Service was horrible!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was great but the service was top tier thanks to Ariel and training Savannah!

Yelp
Ate here for the first time today. We had the chopped sirloin con queso, it was so good with grilled corn on the cob as the side. Also had the chicken fried steak which was good. But not the best I've had, but good. The side on this was the loaded mashed potatoes. They were really good. Just know the upgrade to loaded was 3.95 but worth it. Our Server was Brendan. He was the best server we've had in a long time. He was nice, knowledgeable, and attentive. I would ask to be seated in his area anytime I come. The place is clean. But small. Music just right. Not too loud but you can hear it. Overall a really good experience.

Lee D.

Yelp
I'm disappointed to say that I got one of the worst Chicken fried steaks I've ever had. It's been a while since I've ordered a chicken fried steak from Josephine Street. I remember in the past they used to be fantastic. That was not the case today. The meat itself was thin and very tough. I was very disappointed , also I was shocked to see that they get over $10 for a serving of peach cobbler.

Stacy O.

Yelp
Josephine Street might be the best quality food at any San Antonio restaurant, especially if you like steak and Texas-style flavors! The seasonings are bold and satisfying, to say the least. Every single item on the menu is carefully curated to match the taste influences of south Texas. My husband and I get take out from Jo's Street about once every 4 days and the staff know me by name. Veronica behind the bar is simply fantastic and Margo knows her stuff. Check out the new bar stools and watch the game or sit by the tree growing through the roof! This is the kind of place where the people are real, they remember you, and the food is on par with the best, most expensive steak houses in town. You'll see everyone from ranchers wearing cowboy hats to young tattooed hipsters on a date. Jo's Street is a true slice of San Antonio. Pro tips - be sure to get your parking validated before you leave the restaurant to avoid being charged for parking - if something isn't right, just let them know so they can make it right - Bourbon pecan pie with chocolate chips and ice cream is life-changing Enjoy!

Yelp
I have dined at this SA staple for decades & always appreciated its consistency for quality American fare. The last few times I've gone there, in spite of going through the parking validation process, I was charged over $12 for parking. In the most recent incident, I was double billed the $12 fee. I previously blew it off but getting charged almost $26 to park for an hour to eat dinner, lit me up enough to call & ask for help. I spoke with a bartender who assured me the manager would call me back to help. A week later, I'm still waiting. She also suggested calling Metropolis Parking to request a refund. When contacted, they said they never do that, that it's up to the restaurant to handle refunds. If I ever hear from the manager or actually receive a refund, I would consider going back to Josephine Street, but at this point I'm not too optimistic. Eat elsewhere. There's lots of good choices in this city without this parking hassle.
