9 of the Best Niagara Falls Viewpoints

"This viewpoint on the Canadian side of the falls requires a ticket, but it's worth the price. Journey Behind the Falls brings you 125 feet down, via elevator and 130-year-old tunnels, to the foot of Horseshoe Falls. From here, you can take in the thunderous power of the water from two observation decks. Be warned, though: You will get wet, even if you wear the yellow, biodegradable poncho you're given upon entry (you can take it home as a keepsake). Before you leave, explore the tunnels a bit, where you'll find two portals that open directly behind the falls — hence this attraction's name." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Journey Behind the Falls was an unforgettable experience. Getting that close to the thundering water was surreal. You could feel the power of the falls right beneath your feet. The views from the observation deck were incredible and walking through the tunnels behind the falls felt like stepping into nature’s engine room. If you’re visiting Niagara Falls this is a must-do. Highly recommend it.

Google
Can see the horseshoe fall better up-close. Not much information is provided about the tunnel, its construction, purpose etc. The best way to visit is to go inside the tunnel first and to see the waterfall from the view point last. This minimizes how long you stay wet. We went on Canada day 2025, it was very crowded. Had to wait around 1 hour to enter.

Google
I would recommend visiting the visitor center and doing the journey behind the falls as it takes you down to the tunnel behind the water falls via elevator and you can get the amazing views and deafening sound of the waterfall. Its amazing experience and definitely worth experiencing. The weather was cloudy when we visited, with light showers. After sunset, we were able to see lights projected on the waterfalls

Google
The Niagara Parks Tunnels are an absolute must-see! Walking through the historic tunnels beneath the old power station was both educational and awe-inspiring. The pathway is well-lit, beautifully restored, and filled with fascinating displays about the history of hydroelectric power in Niagara. The real highlight is stepping out to the observation deck at the end of the tunnel—it offers a stunning, up-close view of the falls from a totally unique angle. You can feel the power of the water all around you. The entire experience was smooth, well-organized, and unforgettable. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting Niagara Falls. It’s a perfect mix of history, engineering, and natural beauty!

Google
The real feel of the falls massiveness and the breathtaking views. Totally recommended if you are travelling with small kids and children for which getting the boat ride could be difficult. Getting tickets in advance via online could save some money on the parking ticket for the whole day.

Google
It's a cool experience. You get to see the Niagara falls from a new point of view and to get very wet. I believe that it's pretty expensive, though. The wait was about 20-30 minutes for me. There really wasn't much to explore as there was only the outside area and two very similar spots where you could see the water rushing down from behind.

Greg Eakins

Google
Some of the attractions in this area are good for seeing the falls, but this one is good for feeling them. It's exactly what it says - it's a self-paced walk through tunnels that go behind the falls. There's one lookout and a couple that are directly behind the falling water. When we came, one lookout was frozen over, and there were no crowds or wait times.

Brett Nickel

Google
Such a great experience. Very cool and informative displays. Elevators bring you.down into tunnels carved behind the falls. The two portal openings behind the falls were somewhat anticlimactic as it's just an opening to heavy pouring water, but the observation deck really makes it worth it. The deck sits just feet from the edge of the falling water, has a great view of both the American side as well as the boats that go up to the falls. Depending on the time of day and how clear the sky is, you'll get an opportunity to see some great rainbows Look online for discounted tickets, and it's very affordable.

Yelp
Great experience. We took an elevator down/up. Take your time roaming around. Enjoy the tunnels and views of the amazing waterfalls. Well worth the fee to see the stunning waterfall views and mist
google avatar

Yelp
This go-at-your-own-pace experience takes you to the bottom of the Canadian side of horseshoe falls. We bought online tickets and entered at our assigned time. We were told that in the nonbusy time (end Sept) they are not strict on timing. It's nice to know there is some flexibility. The first stop is a platform at the bottom of the falls. You can see the large amount of water coming in over the rim. So cool. From there, there are two spots where you can see the falls from behind the flow. The first stop was the best because you could see the swirling water and mist. The second was so powerful that you pretty much just saw white and got soaked. The sound of the falls was worth the ticket. Very cool.

Yelp
Pack patient but worth it. A must do but only once event. We went late July, while it seemed most the city was lower in capacity this attraction. The line formed to join this in the gift shop which took about 90minutes to get down to the tunnels. Wheel in the tunnels, you can't buy spend as much time as you like but lines form to see the outlook points behind the falls. They tend to be about 10mins each.

Yelp
This is an amazing attraction to get as close as you can to Niagara Falls without a boat. The entrance is downstairs at the Table Rock Visitors Center. You view the falls from the front area as well as the cataracts to the side. Totally worth the cost for an amazing view. Another tourist was yelling "oh my god" like it was Taylor Swift's Eras Tour surprise song time. Be prepared to get wet and they do provide ponchos. Looking forward to coming back here in the future for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great time with the family. Highly recommend this excursion if you're on the Canadian side. They give you a poncho to wear once you're down near the falls. There's two decks to watch the waterfall from close proximity and there's a couple of "portals" where you are behind the falls. You can hear the thunderous roar of the falls. We went in January but were very lucky that the decks and the portals were open. I read that they close a deck if it gets to dangerous (icy) conditions but we got to enjoy it all.
google avatar

Jamie K.

Yelp
This was a very fun experience. If you are looking for another thing to do besides the maid of the mist then this is it. It has a nice history at the bottom of the walk way and it's a nice feeling of waking under it all. I would say it's a must compared to the other one that is out there
google avatar

Nancy W.

Yelp
We use the package for this attraction. You put on a poncho and go down the elevator you are able to walk out on the platform and see the falls up close. You don't get super wet just some mist. We went in mid-May so it wasn't real busy but I hear it in June and July it can get very busy in the hall way can get noisy and claustrophobic FYI. But we loved it. Took a bunch of pictures and videos. You'll probably spend about 30 to 40 minutes Doing this attraction. You can also walk down some hallways and there's a couple of lookouts where you can see the water rushing down. Not much to see but you see how powerful the water is. In the beginning they take your picture and you can buy it but I think it's very expensive. We just took our own photos. Definitely get the package if you're going to do Niagara Falls Ontario.

Yelp
I came in with my family of 7 on a weekday morning. We paid about $130 for the 7 of us to do a self guided tour. It was a great experience. We got to go down and see behind the falls in tunnels. You can also see construction for new work. You do have to ride an elevator down and that was a bit uncomfortable for us. Staff really pushed the limit to fill the elevator which made our special needs child very uncomfortable but it did work out.

Yelp
I was so excited about having this experience that I even went alone after hubby decided he didn't want to. I bought my lone ticket from one of the ticket kiosks by the falls. Once at the building inside the entrance it was sheer chaos. Since I already had my ticket there was alot of confusion on where to go. One employee directed me to a line right inside the door. Little did I know I would wait in that line for over two hours despite having a timed ticket and arriving over an hour early. As the line moved slowly, I inquired to another employee about my 2:30 time slot and she tells me to go to the back of the line I had already been waiting in for over an hour! Fortunately I didn't listen as even being over an hour early, when I finally entered the tunnel it was well over an hour past my 2:30 time slot. Inside you are greeted by a wet tunnel with little direction on where to go as this is a self guided tour. There are two "windows" behind the falls, each with a long wait for an identical view. Outside there were two decks, barely close enough to even feel the mist. Had there not been a line at the behind the falls view, I could have saw the entire attraction in less than 10 minutes! Staff is less than helpful and despite having two elevators, they were only using one for both up and down. Waiting in a line that seemed endless for very little in way of attraction was a waste of an ENTIRE AFTERNOON. Literally got there at 1 pm and was after 4 when I finally pushed my way out of there. Looking over to the American side, and the steps and views they were experiencing, I would have skipped this attraction and went on the US side. The wait is even more tortuous given that people line jump and nothing is done about it, you're squeezed together like sardines with folks that don't believe in deodorant AND you have parents that think it's a good idea to have young kids stand in line for hours. When it was over I couldn't wait to escape civilization!
google avatar

Jackie E.

Yelp
So fun. Great experience. Definitely worth it. I wouldn't recommend it for very young children. Especially children that hate getting wet or getting water in their face. They do provide child size ponchos though. If you go, go early to beat the crowd because it can get pretty packed. There's two tunnels - one leads you out to the falls - like right up next to it. The other tunnel has two lines. Both lines are to see a part of the back of the waterfall. That part is a quick picture then you can leave. Oh and if you're claustrophobic - you might not like the elevator ride down 100+ feet or the tunnels. I would just do the boat ride instead which is on the other side of the falls around 10-15 min walk. My pants and shoes didn't get wet like I thought. The upper body is what really gets wet, but you have the poncho to protect you. I'm short, so the poncho probably covered me more than the average person. Just bring a change of clothes just in case. Also, if you plan on taking pics or video, take something waterproof - camera / GoPro OR get a waterproof phone case with a lanyard from Amazon like we did. They had a four pack multicolored one that worked perfectly. Enjoy the journey!
google avatar

Thuong N.

Yelp
I don't think this worth for the money. This is boring compare to the other activity. We barely get wet and there was not much interaction or activity to do but seeing how powerful the falls is. That's it.
google avatar

Chelsea P.

Yelp
I liked this nice viewing of Niagara Falls . Did I think there would be a little more history spoke by a tour guide yeah but was it worth seeing absolutely . You go about 128 feet down in an elevator and then you're in the tunnels and you see the opening . It's very misty I would recommend wearing shoes that aren't slippery at all. It was really fun though . I enjoyed it . I did want a little more out of it BUT that's okay too . The experience is worth it
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
I had done this tour in the past, and I only remember going into one cave. Maybe others were closed in the past. We got to go to three separate spaces "behind the falls". They did have to direct traffic a bit and people were a bit pushy, but we still enjoyed it. Wish they would have made an exemption for the deck to be open before May as the day we were there, there was no snow or ice and it would have been nice to experience.
google avatar

Monique C.

Yelp
FYI: DO NOT WEAR SANDALS AND/OR SHOES THAT ARE SLIPPERY WHEN WET. The tunnels are dark, and slippery. It's not a place for sexy shoes, running or rushing. The views are priceless. It's a must when visiting Niagara Falls. I encourage everyone to be prepared for the lines you are going to wait in, and the amount of people that will be around you. It's worth it, but you need patience. If you are claustrophobic and/or short of patience. This is not for you! I will never forget this experience. You can feel the power of the falls. It's powerful and real... you will definitely get wet from the mist of the falls as well. I will be back for sure, it's breathtaking and so much to see, and experience.
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
A good complement to the boat experience where you get to see the Falls up close. We went towards the end of the afternoon on a holiday weekend so the line was very long. It felt like we stood in line longer than we were out looking at the Falls. Probably better to go at the beginning of the day. We also actually got wetter here than on the boat! There were families of all shapes and sizes so accessibility seems to be quite good - but be aware that it is very dark and damp in the tunnels and potentially hard to move around (if mobility is an issue for you). While I'm not seriously claustrophobic, I did note that there was little organization to the traffic flow in the tunnels and a considerable back up of people in a tight space. Worth the trip if you've purchased the full package of passes.
google avatar

Kara S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the journey behind the falls! It is a self guided tour, so you can go at your own pace. I bought tickets online ahead of time, and when I arrived for my time slot I was able to walk right in and didn't have to wait at all. They give you a cute yellow plastic poncho lol Then they take you down an elevator to the tunnels. There is a big overlook that you can get up close and personal with the falls and take pictures! We did not get wet, just a little misted. There was several people that had young children and even babies in carriers, definitely for people of all ages! Stairs were a little slippery though lol
google avatar

Yelp
The journey behind the falls was a magical experience! We were newly engaged and visited Niagara Falls. We found that this was one of the big "must dos" we saw online about the area so we gave it a try. First you take the Incline to get to the bottom, and you enter into this total tourist trap area that has gift shops, food etc, and you get to the line to enter the journey behind the falls. There's many parts to this attraction, they had caves leading to so many areas, our favorites were when you're on the side of the falls, the pictures were so magical, it was unreal. You get wet a bit on this tour but it's nothing like the hot blower where you get soaked. The actual caves that lead behind the falls are cool too but nothing to write home about

Yelp
Holy Moly! You will get wet!! [Niagara Falls, ON Canada] Our 4-hour tour package included the expertly guided walking tour with Philip (our tour guide), City Cruises Boat, and this attraction, Journey Behind the Falls. Philip took care of getting all the tickets included in this tour package. This relieves us from the hassle of getting in line to get our own tickets. The entire tour experience was on the Canada side. Our group skipped the line and got on the elevator first for pre-reserved access to the Journey Behind the Falls experience. We descended down the stairs into the rocky caves behind Niagara Falls where we got to see first hand crashing water (like the sound of thunder) echo through the tunnels from the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal. We continued to the path that led to a ledge on the side of the falls where we felt and experienced the true power of 3,160 tons of water a second as it comes cascading down close by. Whoa, wow! Ponchos are included in this self-guided tour because you will get wet some more. LoL! Review #3048

Yelp
It's $25 per person and not worth it. But okay, so you booked a trip specifically to see Niagara Falls. Are you really going to pass up on an experience called "Journey Behind the Falls"? I'm sure you are going to book this. Here is what to expect: - The entrance is inside Table Rock Centre. Don't try to park. Table Rock Centre is a WeGo bus hub. Take any of the WeGo buses there. When you exit the experience you exit into a gift shop. It's probably one of the biggest, best gift shops in Niagara falls. 5 stars for the gift shop. - Go early or else the lines are very long. We were there at 10 am. There were a lot of people. - You get ponchos and cram into an elevator with a bunch of people. - At there bottom of the elevator there are a series of tunnels that take you to an observation deck or one of two viewing portals behind the falls. - The observation deck is okay. It's two stories. It's packed with people and misty from the falls. The deck is at the base of the falls, so you can potentially get some decent pictures. Quite honestly though, there's a lot of steam from the falls that obscure the view, it's very wet and the ponchos are not the most flattering. We got our best pictures from the viewing area around Table Rock Centre. - Do not expect much from the viewing portals. Imagine, there are two archways cut into the wall behind the falls. There is a metal gate at each archway to prevent you from getting too close. You wait in a long line of people basically to get as close as you can to that metal gate and snap a picture. The picture ultimately does not look like anything because it's literally an archway opening up to a white wall of water. It's nothing like Pocahontas or Avatar. You cannot see through the wall of water. Enjoy!
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
Very cool to be so close to the side of the waterfall. Lots of space to take pictures, and you're allowed as much time as you want in the tunnels. There are spots where it opens into the waterfall, you can feel just how powerful and fast it is from those portals. It is slippery inside the tunnels so would not recommend if you don't have great balance. Downside is we waited 45 minutes past our entrance time, they really pack people tightly into the queue.
google avatar

Angel S.

Yelp
This was a fun and unique experience and very informative. Kind of cool to hear about the history and fun little stories from the tour guides. It is cold and wet behind the falls but the views are spectacular. The boat ride was nice as well and there is an inside if you do not want to get wet and the views are just as nice.
google avatar

Christy C.

Yelp
We visited Niagara Falls during Thanksgiving, but this attraction wasn't crowded at all. This is definitely one of the best attractions near Niagara Falls and I highly recommend it. It brought us much closer to the falls and view all the falls from different angles. When it gets windy, you may get wet though. There were plenty of spots of photo opportunity at this attraction and it was not as crowded as viewing the falls from the top. It wasn't much walking to get to the different viewing spots from the entrance. Most part of the walking was indoor which kept my kids warm.
google avatar

Alison C.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the Journey behind the falls. Amazing to see up close and read about the creation of the tunnels and portals. Not to be missed !
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
Must do experience! Really busy but definitely worth the wait in the queues. So beautiful! You don't get that wet just a light misting. Took 1 hour for the whole experience mostly waiting in line to see the behind the falls. Be warned it's really loud below so maybe not good for someone who doesn't like tight spaces or has noise sensory issues.
google avatar

Tanya C.

Yelp
I had the adventure pass and i got an early time (when it opened). It was a quick stop and no line if you go early. Walk down a tunnel, go to the observation deck and take pictures, walk down a different path, and see a few spots behind the falls.
google avatar

Mandy B.

Yelp
Definitely a must if you are visiting Niagara Falls for the first time. There are organized time slots for purchase however not much coordination in the groups leaving. The tunnels can be long waits. Our family of eight spent over 40mins waiting to see the window tunnel behind the falls. There is an amazing view just off the elevator that gives you a beautiful view from the side of the falls. We visited in winter and it was perfect. Note to families with strollers they are not permitted and must be left outside.
google avatar

Kathryn D.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend visited there. We loved it! To see Niagara Falls so up close & personal so just so incredible. You get a different perspective than just being on the maid of the mist.
google avatar

Martin K.

Yelp
Not a whole lot to this, but seeing the power of the water from behind the falls and seeing the falls close up from the platform was impressive. In my view worth to do at least once.
google avatar

Amberr E.

Yelp
The only cool part about this attraction was that you got to see a close up of the falls. I would never spend my money here again. I thought it would be more tunnels and learning about the falls but literally it'a one tunnel with two spots to see under the falls and another area where you can go out and take pictures.
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
we did Journey Behind the Falls after the boat tour. it was an amazing to experience the falls even more up close and personal than being on the boat. you will get wet here as well, so the ponchos they provide are handy. you will also get some beautiful photos of the falls from the platform as well as behind through the tunnels. it's self guided which is nice because you can take as little or as long as you want. I purchased tix online on my phone right before we walked up to the desk. you take an elevator down to the falls and are given your poncho as you head out to the tunnels. I would def recommend this as a supplement to the boat ride. we all enjoyed the experience and the kids loved it!
google avatar

Cathy C.

Yelp
First of all, this activity was only $17 with tax. If you're short on time, this is a good activity for sure. It only took me about 30 minutes to see the 2 portals and the viewing deck. During the winter months, there aren't any boat rides due to very obvious reasons. So, what can you do? Go behind the falls! You still get wet a little from the water from Horseshoe Falls (the photogenic part of Niagara Falls). The closest you can get to the falls without getting soaked! The views are spectacular. Is it worth $17? Absolutely! If you read every single signage, you can possibly spend more than 30 minutes here. Just a little bit of warning for those who are not comfortable in tight spaces, this might not be for you,
google avatar

Korey A.

Yelp
We went on this tour after going on the cruise the day before. You go down an elevator to a couple of tunnels. There were fewer tunnels than I expected. You can go right immediately after the elevator and down a tunnel to two different views from under the falls. They are both very similar. We did both just because we wanted to see and there wasn't much else to do. When you go straight out of the elevators instead of turning right, it takes you to the base of the falls. This is where you will get a little wet. On the way down the tunnel to the base of the falls, there is a 5 foot tunnel where you can look in and see where they started to dig out another tunnel. Overall, I'm glad we did the tour, although it felt a little overpriced. I wouldn't go back and do it again. Once was enough.

Kyle G.

Yelp
Overbooked, overcrowded, and not worth the time. Took 1.5 hours to go through and could have been done in 15 minutes without the lines. Skip this
google avatar

Alfred F.

Yelp
Absolutely a must do when visiting Niagara Falls. Amazing! The tunnels and view of the falls are unbelievable.
google avatar

Heily P.

Yelp
Nice little activity while at the falls. We were there Labor Day weekend and we had no wait, not for the tickets, elevator or even the portal it was maybe a minute or two. Great views and experience. I highly recommend. I have 4 stars cause it really is a short activity.
google avatar

Hunter S.

Yelp
I'm not sure why there are people complaining about this experience or the price. Tickets were 15.25 USD each. We went during winter, so the outdoor platform was closed. But there were zero lines, zero crowds. We still got to see behind the falls and got to see some of the tunnels that give insight into how the attraction was built (pictured). There is another viewing platform that is more enclosed (but still boasts gorgeous vistas without getting soaked). The history along the walls is really interesting. I really enjoyed this, and maybe I liked it even better because it was during winter and was less crowded. I recommend it.
google avatar

Grace R.

Yelp
This was a great experience. You can feel and see the power of the water through the tunnel entrance. You can see the falls beautiful color of the water as it drop. I would recommend going to the first tunnel and going outside to take pictures of the water as it falls.
google avatar

Chiemi K.

Yelp
I loved this tour attraction! It's in Niagara Parks Power Station. I think we hit a goo day as a weekday in Autumn. There weren't many people. Great sightseeing!
google avatar

Aunje M.

Yelp
Not a must see. In the winter you really can't see much. Glad it want expensive. There was one with a decent view. Nice staff, about $20
google avatar

Cindy P.

Yelp
This was fun and interesting. Quick self guided tour for a different view of the falls.
google avatar

Dave H.

Yelp
It's only a 10-15 minute thing. But it's very fun and you can get great photos of the falls. The lower observation deck was close due to a snow storm. But the peaks behind the falls and the observation deck next to them were amazing!
google avatar

Marisa M.

Yelp
Totally worth it! It was really cool to walk in the tunnels behind the falls and hear the rushing water coming down. The best part is the lookout point where you are right next to the falls! Great alternative when the boat isn't running. I never took the maid of the mist, but I was really happy with this instead.
google avatar

Danny R.

Yelp
Amazing view of the falls. Very awe inspiring to see the wonder of the world. Highly recommend a tour guide to purchase all the attractions.

Lila D.

Yelp
This attraction itself is very interesting and beautiful views of the falls but .... Be prepared to wait in lines , more lines and more lines. It took us longer to wait in line than see the sights. Having known this I probably would have just skipped this

Jan M.

Yelp
Whew, two small (in comparison) tunnels to two misty wet overlooks. Reminded us of going out on our porch (in a protected corner) during a hurricane! Fun bit if I had to choose, the Tunnel (where the power plant outflow used to exit) would be my pick!
google avatar

Alyana S.

Yelp
We bought our tickets the day of and it was around $23. We were able to go in right away and didn't have to wait too long to get in line. If I had to change one thing I would change not going in the middle of the afternoon and go early similar to going on the Maid Mist cruise. It wasn't too busy for us going around 2pm on a Monday. We got a yellow poncho and then you get access to the observation sky deck where it brings you up close to the falls. This is a great spot to get up close pictures to the falls. Then I wish there were more signage to the "behind the falls" portion as we waited in line for a while to get a picture behind the falls but I think it could've been more efficient if there were staff working the lines. Plus it does get warm and tight in there. Overall my favorite part was the observation deck next to the falls!
google avatar

Vinay Y.

Yelp
Great place to see the Horseshoe Falls up close. The line though to view the portals was super long as was the line to take the elevator to the observation deck. The people working there were very nice. It was a cool experience but not as cool as Cave of the Winds. I wouldn't do this again if I come to visit here, Cave of the Winds is much better.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
This was my sons favorite thing about the trip. The boat scared him bc he got so wet but he liked this bc he was up close and didn't get wet. The tunnels were cool. Really neat experience, good for kids

Bug H.

Yelp
suked my feets wet for real wished i could get foot plastic shoes to wear if only my daze. also it still 10/10. Now i will pass onto my friend..... horrible experience there was no fish 0/10 i hate ypu
