JQD Saltworks - Atlas Obscura

"After more than a decade of working as a chef in restaurants around North Carolina, Nancy Burns reconnected with her own gastronomic heritage. Her time in the kitchen led to an interest in collecting salts from around the globe. Eventually she started to research her own roots and the history of salt in West Virginia. Burns is the fourth great-granddaughter of the man who started JQ Dickenson Saltworks back in 1817. The saltworks ceased operation in 1945. In 2013, Burns and her brother revived the family business. West Virginia geology has lent itself to salt formations and mining as many know. Burns approaches salt as an  “agricultural product,” not a mineral and uses the sun to evaporate the brine as part of the salt-making process.  Once the salt is harvested from large beds in greenhouses, some of it is with imbued with local flavors such as ramps, mushrooms, and even ghost peppers. Burns also ages some of her salt in bourbon barrels for additional complexity. JQD Saltworks sources a monthly subscription box, which is aimed at teaching people how to creatively use the salts by providing recipe inspiration and education. Seven times a year, the Saltworks host chefs onsite from the region to make a dinner featuring local ingredients and also incorporate the salts. The Saltworks facility is open for tours to see the magic behind the scenes. It is also possible to do a salt tasting in the rustic company store. The store is stocked with both JQD Saltworks items and a variety of artisan goods ranging from soaps to hand-carved wood products made by craftspeople from across Appalachia. " - Atlas Obscura

A nice stop with an intimate tour showing you how they make the salt. You get up very close to the process, which is great! Our tour guide went a bit fast at times, but shared a good story about the business. No pressure to buy stuff, which is so common these days. I walked out with a couple of small items from their store anyway.

Paid a visit and went on an experiential tour with Megan as my guide! Enjoyed all the participation and interaction with the tour, especially with harvesting and cleaning the salt. Seeing the small salt granules in a square shape was super cool, and Megan was extremely informative and knowledgeable during the entire tour! She mentioned she's been with the business since April, which is super impressive considering how much she was able to share with us!☺️ Learning about the historical significance of the business was very interesting, and involving us in the process (and being able to take salt home) was very fun! 🧂 Would definitely recommend visiting, and if you get Megan, even better~! ✨ Thank you for hosting us!

I have been coming here to the Malden Salt festival for a few years and I really enjoy the event. It gets better every year and is growing. The place is amazing and is full of history. It has all of the best WV treats and items. There is too many to list but it has jerky, soaps, honey, apparel and of course flavored salts. There are two different tours here during the event. You can see where the original mine was in one tour and see the company store and the property. Its stunning. There is another walking tour where you see the current way they gather salt from the Atlantic ocean underneath the Dickinson family property. Essentially everything is sea salt! A must see when visiting the Charleston area.

We took a tour of the JQ Dickinson Salt Works and it was a fun tour with tastings of different salts as well as a pairing with a drink. The employees were all nice and welcoming with very informative takes. We enjoyed it and walked away with some products.

My partner and I took a tour here recently, and it was such a great experience! The entire process of salt harvesting was way more complex than I expected, and our tour guide, Megan, explained everything clearly while also being super patient with our questions. She also showed us the section full of different salts, and we had fun picking a few to bring home. Definitely a cool spot to visit!

Lived in WV over 50 years and never knew this place was not 25 miles away from where we lived. Found it listed in the WV booklet that a friend gave me in Florida. They give tours and tell were the salt comes from, an ancient ocean under WV, never knew. You can also stock up on items made in WV. It is a little hard to find, we missed the turn and had to come back to it.

Google
Do not recommend. I generally don't write reviews, but felt compelled to do so because this company wasted my time on vacation in the area. I both emailed and called this morning about taking a tour today and was told to just show up before 3pm. Drove about 45 minutes to go for the tour and arrived a little after 2pm. Waited almost 10 minutes in their gift shop area for an employee to show up. When we asked to take the tour, we were then told by the employee that they were too sick to give one today. We weren't offered any other solutions. Now we get to drive 45 minutes back. 😔 It's a shame because I had heard good things about this tour and was planning to buy some items.

There is a whole lot of history here. Be sure and take the time to absorb what all has transpired here in the last 235+ years...

Yelp
Great, semi-hidden jem in Charleston WV. Interesting founding history of salt mining in the Appalachian Mtns. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and loved the "tasting" at the end of the tour. Also great little shop with plenty of WV based gifts. Looking forward to returning for one of their food and drink events!

Yelp
One of WV's beat kept secrets! Just a few minutes drive from Charleston, the salt works offers tours and tastings in their gift shop. We love the burnt caramel sauce over ice cream, with a pinch of finishing salt, and the smoked salt on fresh grilled and buttered corn. Another local favorite is the ramp salt, made from locally grown and harvested ramps. Try it on a baked potato or your favorite grilled fish. The best thing about this place is that it is locally owned and operated, and their salt is amazing. Staff are extremely knowledgeable, and we loved our tour with Megan. The setting is beautiful, with flowers and shrubs (a great place to sit a while or take a few pictures). Be sure to stop by and check out this little gem, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This place is awesome we absolutely love it. Great place with all sorts of cooking needs and super helpful staff. Love that they pull the salt from the ancient well below and keep WV history alive!!!

Yelp
Not sure that "craft" salt-making will be a thing, but these guys are already at the forefront. A little off the beaten path, about 10 min from downtown Charleston near the Kanawha river. They have a free little 30 min tour that's enjoyable and informative and winds up in their store. Stuff is a bit pricey but it's artisanally harvested from the river and hand packed. I liked the smoked salt best and we got a little bottle to take home.
