On the Grid : J & S Bean Factory

"Colorful, quirky, and unbelievable good, this neighborhood staple is a great place to spend the day sipping coffee, reading the newspaper, and relaxing on the patio. The menu is filled with home roasted black coffee, artisan pours, Cubanos, cappuccinos , pastries and treats. They also have a selection of staff-inspired specialty drinks such as Mike's Bomb and The Night Rider (a highly caffeinated drink for bikers). Ask the friendly staff, and they will tell you about their beans and roasting process. They pride themselves on serving the best beans directly from the farmers, roasted in house, and served fresh. Truly, this is the good stuff." - Jenny Bookler

This place has the perfect vibe of your friendly neighborhood coffee shop. It’s not pretentious in any way and serves up truly amazing coffee and coffee drinks. They get local pastries in which add to the experience, and my favorite is the apply fritter. They also have a variety of savory pastries which are amazing too. The service is top notch and the drinks come out quickly. We love stopping by in the morning before dropping our daughter off at daycare! Their drinks are some of the best ratio of sweetness to caffeine. This is easily my favorite coffee shop in the neighborhood, if not all of the Twin Cities.

Parking was easy even on a Sunday afternoon, I was able to park on a side street a few minutes away. I got the reccomended drink, the blackberry dark chocolate mocha and it was delicious! Every flavor was distinct, yet blended together to make a lovely drink. The spinach cheese and walnut crossaint was alright, would have likely been better if it was warmed up. Staff was very friendly and personable, and I had a pleasant few hours sitting and taking in the atmosphere. Would reccomend and will be back.

Google
One of my favorite coffee shops in town - has a great laid back atmosphere and a really good darker espresso blend with good pastry options even past the morning rushes. The patio and outdoor seating is great for work or to chat with folks. You can also buy green coffee beans for a decent price to experiment with!

The atmosphere is super chill, yet upbeat. The people working interact with the customers and are very friendly. Not to mention, the tea was delicious!

Google
Really cute small coffee shop. Also yummy lemonade super fresh and the cheapest I’ve seen at a coffee shop before. Only 3.35 for a 12 oz!

Google
Love this place! Excellent coffee. I loved that there was a line today. Happy to support our neighborhood coffee shop.

Google
Coffee is amazing. Atmosphere is amazing. They roast their own beans and the bags of whole bean coffee are amazing. Best coffee shop in Saint Paul.

Tierney Winter

Google
A perfect place to go if you’re looking for some genuine coffeehouse vibes. Cute decoration, lots of art, and a cozy atmosphere. You can also buy bulk beans! Tables are a little small, but that might seriously be the only negative of this place. The baristas were super kind and courteous. They were quick and friendly. What more can you ask for!

Yelp
I ordered a caramel latte, and it was amazing. They have so many options to choose from and you can really taste the fresh roast. The service was fast and easy and there was not much of a line even though it was a weekend morning. The ambiance was a very mellow indie vibe with soft music playing but not distracting me from my morning journaling and reading. Most people were outside enjoying the large patio they have on-site. I definitely recommend and will come back!

Yelp
They have decaf! I've been on a cute-coffee-shop journey lately, and this is one I'm excited to return to. My friends and I wanted to hang out at a cool place, someplace with decaf to accommodate one of us, and we hit the jackpot with this place. They have a few food items in displays on the counter, like doughnuts and granola bars, but mostly you're here for the coffee. They pride themselves on roasting a variety of coffee beans from around the world, and the three of us experienced the subtle differences in those flavors. I got the "no-brainer" which advised to just order without wondering what's in it. So I don't, but it was cool. It's really good coffee. They have a charming dog-friendly patio with lots of space, so that's where we hung out for a couple of hours. I want to come back soon and try something different.

Yelp
Great coffee. Coffee club and discount refills. A wonderful patio for warmer days, and friendly fast service. About 15 tables inside for cooler rainy days. Some pastries. But the reason to visit is the coffee and the smell of roasting beans. Mmmm

Yelp
I've always had a great experience here. Each of the staff are kind. When I'm in the neighborhood, I love stopping in, nice friendly comforting atmosphere and great coffee. I used to pop in here many years ago, before I moved out of state, and now my partner works close by so I like to hangout when I can. Thanks J & B!

Yelp
I love this quirky coffee shop and roaster for many reasons. 1. In warmer months, they have a spacious and cute outdoor patio area. Some people are chatting, some bring their dogs, some are working. It's such a vibe. 2. The interior is just a mix of decor and feels so homey, welcoming, and cozy. 3. The smell of the coffee roasting, if you're lucky to be there when the magic is happening. (can they post a roasting schedule??) 4. They offer soy, oat, and almond milk 5. The coffee is good, the espresso is good, the chai is good 6. Parking is street parking but I never struggle to find a spot close enough

Yelp
Lovely! Not my first pick for coffee in Saint Paul as we are spoiled with lovely options, however, I do hope to add this into my mix more frequently. Larger interior space with an outdoor patio during the nicer months, fun apparel, lots of drink, on-site roaster, and the most syrup flavors I've seen in any coffee house. Speaking of flavors, I made my own hot maple - cinnamon latte and it was fabulous. The barista recommended using cinnamon sprinkle powder on top which aided to my review of service along with the hand drawn face on my to go cup. On my next visit, I hope to try the patio out. 4 stars because parking is wonky and I don't get the same cozy feel as some other spots. None the less, absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Yelp
Cozy spot! Stopped by on the way to the marathon expo (rip) and got some drinks. I got an iced vanilla latte. It was yummy, served quickly, and at a reasonable price. Only complaint is they didn't have a lot of pastries available, but we did come pretty late. There were some tables available to sit at, but not a ton. There is no private parking lot, just street parking available. But I had no issue finding parking.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a local, who promptly told me not to expect big city appeal: "Don't judge this place by it's cover. It's not 'cute' but the coffee is great quality." Sure enough, the place is not "pretty" or trendy but it has its charm. It's a cozy neighborhood joint that was full on our arrival around 3 o'clock. Busyness was a sign that it's a favorite. We ordered a Mile (latte with honey and cinnamon) and a dark chocolate mocha. We also ordered some treats (but they don't look house-made). We were happy with our coffee. They roast the beans here and you can taste it. Fresh, rich and full of flavor. We'd come back.

Yelp
What a cute little find! My friend and I stopped here to get coffee and croissants before going for a hike. I randomly chose this place and was so glad I did! This place is kind of tucked away but it was pretty busy for 9 am on a Sunday. They roast their coffee in-house and they have lots of different varieties to choose from. This cafe was super cosy with inside and outside seating. The service was great, they even warmed up our croissants. The coffee was phenomenal. I had a decaf PSL and I loved their take on it because it wasn't super sweet. Great find, highly recommend.

Yelp
Great coffee and peaceful backyard style patio . Staff were very attentive as well. I will be back.

Yelp
Excellent place, best ambiance of any coffee shop I've been to in the country. Well maintained and clean. Great background music, shop has a great color scheme and decor. Service is knowledgeable, friendly and fast. The pastries look tasty but since no low carbs is the mission didn't try them. The coffee is very well made and has flavor and body. Slept bad and stopped here at 6:00am and changed the perspective in the day. Highly recommend. Definitely will be back when I'm in town.

Yelp
I had the Cuban, it was made to perfection! Really friendly place good atmosphere! Definitely recommend

Yelp
Cheap, but WOW...Crappy customer service today, and not inviting for it being my 1st time since moving to the neighborhood. Cashier had to finish her conversation with the barista before she unenthusiastically said hello. Didn't know where cream and sugar where, but instead off asking me "are you looking for cream and sugar?" Barista hastily said " I'm gonna need you to stay on THIS side of the counter" as I walked to my far left thinking that was where it was. After they had already asked if I wanted room for cream. Apparently, my black ass good morning didn't matter. And to think I turned around and came back to this shop!

Willie L.

Yelp
Lots of coffee shops have sprang up with giant mochas, lattes, americanos, overwhelmed with whipped cream, holiday syrups, sprinkles, etc. $8 drinks with 1,500 calories of sugar and cream. Here, everything is original and fresh. The beans are roasted daily, so the coffee is robust without even a hint of sourness. And they serve it hot. The pastries are equally fresh, so they must get daily deliveries. Since moving to St Paul, I've been systematically checking out neighborhood coffee shops. And J&S is among the tiny minority (actually only the second one I found) that serves a good coffee. The vibe skews older and more blue collared, so there are no college students wearing ear phones, with papers sprawled across the table, tapping away while multi-tasking on their phones. The locals know this place so it's always busy. Come for good coffee.

Carissa B.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, cozy shop. You don't feel like you're in the city. Barista is very talented.
google avatar

Yelp
This was recommended to me as a friends favorite coffee shop in the twin cities and it quickly became one of my favorites in the area. Their beans are just spectacular and you can really taste the difference in quality compared to other places out there. I got the miel and latte and wish I had bought two miels because it was made to perfection. It wasn't too sweet and it paired perfectly with their in-house roasted beans that had notes of cherry. I'd return to this place anytime I can :)
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite coffee shops in the Twin Cities! All of the coffee I've tried there has been delicious (I especially love their cold brew), they roast their own beans which are also excellent, and the baristas are always friendly. The shop is cozy and has a great neighborhood vibe -- they also have outdoor seating in back. Love this place!

Yelp
A non-corporate indie in a cool area of St. Paul and I wonder how I missed it for so many years. Probably because I don't ride along on Randolph Ave that much. It's worthwhile to leave a car and walk around a bit. A huge selection of coffees in a crowded quaint shop, which is all about the ambience. There are a few of these types around the cities but not like in years past as the biggies take over. All types of neighborhood color sipping and chatting. I had the Dark Roast Java which I thought would be stronger but it still wasn't a disappointment. More room on the back patio. *Note sign on back door pleads to whomever is trying to break in to quit as there is no money left in the till and if you need some bucks try applying within.

Mark S.

Yelp
Awesome selection and atmosphere. Knowledgeable staff who can recommend blends to your taste. 10/10
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
This little haunt on Randolph was such a great find. I always prefer local coffee shops over chains and this one is just great. They really roast their beans, so you get a nice bold roast. The staff are so pleasant and it just has a really neighborhood-y vibe, alongside great coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome coffee! I got one of their specialty drinks called the Saratoga (a latte with honey and vanilla) and it was one of the best I've had. Not overly sweet or milky and the coffee flavor came through strongly. The inside is a little small, but there's a few places to sit and eat/drink. I happened to stay until they were close to closing so they gave away some of their pastries for free which was really nice! Highly recommend!

Sam D.

Yelp
Great patio space with plenty of seating. Coffee was delicious, I had their seasonal pumpkin spice latte.

Yelp
I went to J & S bean factory with my girlfriend a few days ago and we loved it! she got the mexican mocha and i got the courtney special. we both loved our drinks and can't wait to come back. i love all of the different options here and the prices are competitive. they had a little outdoor area you could sit and enjoy your coffee too. overall a great experience and can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Malyn B.

Yelp
JS was super cute, quirky, and fun!! I loved the interior and decor, and there was also a small patio if you wanted to take your drink outside. The baristas were super friendly and efficient. I really loved the prices, which were super reasonable and competitively priced (about $4.50 for a 12oz latte with almond milk). My latte was pretty standard, but my friend ordered a Mexican mocha and it was incredible - I would recommend anyone coming in to get that drink. For sure would recommend JS!!
google avatar

Kailee C.

Yelp
Good iced coffee and I love the outdoor seating area in back. WiFi worked great outside too! The only thing I really didn't like was all of the people smoking at the tables. Had to leave eventually due to the smell of smoke. Nice quiet place to study with quite a few baked goods options and drinks. They also had almond and soy milk alternatives and good prices.
google avatar

Maggie A.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop for the atmosphere. Very much your local's coffee shop. One of my favorite places to study and write. Staff is always super friendly and helpful. Coffee is good, however I don't drink coffee anymore so I wish they had more tea options, but either way I will continue to go there. They have a beautiful patio out back perfect for your socially distanced coffee dates!

Ann D.

Yelp
I just love this coffee shop, it's very simple and so friendly. The coffee is roasted on-site by the owner and they will even custom roast beans for you. Their coffees and selections are fantastic. Being inside on winter day is cozy. And in the summer it's fun to sit outside and occasionally listen to banjo players. The people that go here seems to be more social than most places. Maybe it's a little bit of everything that makes this place so right.
google avatar

Yelp
Very happy with my latest stop in to J&S. It's been awhile but I wanted to treat myself to some really good coffee beans, so I made a pit stop for a pound of my favorite French Roast Costa Rican beans. The young man who helped me was super pleasant and surprised me by telling me that there is now a punch card loyalty program for coffee buyers. Buy nine pounds get one free. While I will say that I feel this coffee is worth every penny of the $13.75 a pound price, this unexpected bonus makes me feel like I'm getting a little bit of a better deal. (OK - so when you run the math it's $12.38 a pound instead of $13.75, but it still FEELS like a way better deal). And, with my coffee bean purchase today, he informed me, I was also entitled to a free cup of coffee right there to take with me. I'm never one to turn down free coffee! So wanted to let Yelp know about these new perks for coffee bean/ground purchasers, and also give another shout out to a really excellent local business.
google avatar

Joel G.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee, okay snacks, and an outdoor patio to die for. It's all about the patio. And the friendly customers, who will join in conversation if you want.
google avatar

Lora B.

Yelp
Came here to redeem my free coffee from the Craft Notes Coffee passport. We got the dark mocha and it was a tasty brew. The menu is simple and straight to the point. They have a lot of bean options. The store is SO quiet which can be a positive and a negative! I'd come back again to study. It's not necessarily a good place or comfy place to meet with friends.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
This is the place I pick up my whole bean coffee. My little process is this: Walk in, hope they are roasting so it will add to the whole experience. Go to the whole bean wall and start sampling beans. That's right, let one or two drop out and taste it. The beauty is that you usually have at least a dozen coffees to chose from and you can tell which was recently roasted as the bin will be full. With each pound you buy, they'll give you a small cup of whatever joe they are serving that day. Don't forget to get your card stamped because every 9 pounds you buy, the 10th is free. bought, you get one free. Other benefits: - Cozy - Outdoor patio - local art - Best spicy Mexican hot chocolate in town (I always request whole milk and real whip cream). It rocks my world. Plus every winter, Klecko the bread man will hang loaves of animal shaped bread from trees around the place each December. It's some Eastern European tradition.
google avatar

Guyin A.

Yelp
In my opinion the best coffee in Saint Paul. They have a fun decor inside and a great patio outside for those three to four days a year in Minnesota that it's not too hot, too cold, too humid, or too buggy. They also have a great selection of whole bean coffee and they will sell in small quantities so it doesn't go bad before you use it at home!
google avatar

Beth H.

Yelp
All generations and types of people can be found here, probably because it's universally delicious. The outdoor patio space is excellent. The inside space had a classic local shop feel. The free little library box on the patio is a Poke-stop for those who are interested. Courtney's special (cold press and sweetened condensed milk) was delicious. Don't hesitate to ask them what the house specials are. You might find a gem. The medium roast was aromatic and smooth with toffee notes. Both drinks were great on a 70 degree Sunday, enjoyed out on the patio.
google avatar

Aneesa K.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood coffee place, personal, cozy..., like a college coffee hang out place for grown ups- loved being here
google avatar

Annie D.

Yelp
After a meeting at Lynden's down the street last Friday, I decided to camp out in St. Paul for a beautiful day. J&S was the spot! J&S is a genuine neighborhood coffeeshop that serves a solid cold press and all kinds of coffee beans to brew at home. Though the decor could use a little sprucing up, the rough edges sorta add to the charm. I found the large patio to be a perfect place to get some work done on a warm day. It's very dog-friendly and it's basically like a big backyard. Many of the tables out there are built for more than one person, so I was ready to share my space if it got busy. I usually judge coffee shops on their espresso drinks (which I didn't try here), but the cold press was so good it inspired me to break out my Toddy and brew my own the next morning. Lastly, this has nothing to do with my opinion of J&S as a whole... but I still can't believe it actually happened: There was an adult couple next to me talking to each other in baby voices while playing with little dolls. For about 10 minutes. Yep.
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. The coffee is amazing and the service is great! I always get the blended frappe with espresso added
google avatar

Amal I.

Yelp
Baristas are super friendly, excellent place to study with friendly patrons and tons of space inside and outside. Good selection of coffees too!
google avatar

Scott J.

Yelp
Why J & S deserves your coffee dollar(s): * The "Magic Bar" where you can pick your bean and they grind it fresh for you and make a cup of coffee on the spot. No need to worry how long the brew has been sitting. * Four types of French Roast. If you love your beans dark, oily, and robust, you can't beat J & S. * Independent - local, roast their own beans, and not forced to comply with brand standards from the home office like other multi-location coffee options.
google avatar

Yelp
Favorite coffee shop in the metro, very fresh strong coffee and the back patio area is amazing in the summer
google avatar

Ambrosia A.

Yelp
I love this place! Especially when it's warmer and you can sit outside. They have the best Cappuccino I've ever had. They just have a great local coffee that surpasses the chains.
google avatar

Sergio L.

Yelp
Great brewed coffee, awesome ground & whole bean selections for purchase, easily my favorite St. Paul spot to work out of when I'm in town.
google avatar

Yelp
From time to time - when I'm not dining at Chez Quis for lunch or visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, I like to enjoy myself a good ol' cup o' joe. My favorite spot to do so is over at J & S. I'm not going to pretend that I'm a connoisseur of coffee - I'm just in it for a big mug of bean water that gives me the kick I need in my day - so I usually stick to the basics and get me a big honkin' dark roast of the day, and it always gets the job done. Every so often when I'm feeling in a celebratory mood or need the extra boost, I'll ask the staff to get creative and hook a brotha up with something with a boatload of caffeine and sugar, and thus far, all of their beverages have been supes delicious. The highlight of J & S Bean Factory in my humble opinion is the atmosphere, which includes the actual shop and its baller patio, delightful staff members, and really great neighborhood patrons. It really is a diamond in the rough to find a neat little neighborhood joint such as this. As an added bonus, they roast their own beans and provide wholesale, for the days that I'm too lazy to leave the house and make the trek to hang out there. I have really enjoyed spending my days and nights there in recent months and am sadly moving out of the neighborhood soon, but I will definitely make the special trip back every so often just to feel at home again :) Keep it up, you guys are rockstars!
google avatar

Rob D.

Yelp
Bought a pound of whole bean coffee and it has been fantastic. I was hoping they would have flavored coffee options, but the variety of roasts they have is great. The drink selection they had could please anyone and it was packed when we walked in. Only 4 starts because I thought it could have been cheaper and was anticipating more flavored options.
google avatar

Eddie A.

Yelp
Place is super good... lots of options and the baristas are very knowledgeable. They dont make weak drinks either. Pretty sure they are all organic... Good suggestions as well... looks like they have really good food options too.. just didnt get a chance to try.
google avatar

Yum Yum Jesus J.

Yelp
Great beans, roasted there and always fresh. Been getting beans here since my usual place is not in the mall anymore. I never sit down here, it's far to hipster, and whatever you call white dudes with dreads, and women with far too many tattoos. But! The beans are good quality and that is what I need, it just happens that hipsters make the good stuff, coffee wise. The smokey double dark is now my regular bean.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
This is one the best coffee shops in St. Paul. There is a huge selection of drinks and a great atmosphere. They have fast fast wifi and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff are so friendly and very quick. All the coffee is roasted on site, so it always smells great :)

Yelp
Hotdish, Tapas and i usually go to the Dunn Bros. on Grand for our coffee/hot chocolate/pastry fix and the excellent people-watching, but Hotdish and I decided to try something new. I was so completely pleasantly surprised by this place. The adorable hipster boy was the best barista (baristo?) I've encountered in any coffee shop in the Cities. He seemed genuinely glad to see us though he'd never seen us before. Our order was taken and made so quickly that i barely had a chance to look at the local beauty swag on the wall. We sat out front. Here is the only drawback: the people-watching was almost nothing. I'd like to think it will improve when Randolph reopens, but that section of Randolph isn't really a high foot traffic neighborhood. Not at all like the corner of Grand and Snelling, which has some of the best foot traffic in St Paul. My caramel latte (yes, yes. So basic. Cut me some slack, I've aged out of my hipsterness) was perfect. And no whip! I forgot to request no whip and Adorable Hipster Boy must've read my mind. Plus 100 points for psychic ability here. When he left his shift, AHB not only acknowledged us but thanked us, which is both shocking and a big deal once you reach the middle age of invisibility. Just you wait; you'll see eventually why this is so impressive. The place is cute & cozy, the staff are great and the coffee was perfectly sufficient. Yay to trying new things!

Angela L.

Yelp
I am not sure that there is another coffee shop quite like the bean factory in Saint Paul OR Minneapolis. They roast their own beans on site and are a neighborhood staple and gathering point ... a coffee community, more than a coffee shop. Great addition to the area and if you like your coffee STRONG you can't go wrong. Love their back patio ... it's like a beer garden but for coffee.

Riley L.

Yelp
I tried J & S for the first time this week and it did not disappoint! Lovely atmosphere, delicious espresso, and incomparable outdoor seating. Definitely could cozy up here for a long conversation with a friend like I did or just kick back and enjoy a book. Either way it's worth a try! Friendly staff and neighbors.
