Fantastic Japanese Restaurant located in NJ. I remember coming here as a child with my family. The food is still consistently amazing after 15+ years later. I highly recommend ordering sashimi or sushi plates along with a sukiyaki. The staff are also very friendly and accommodating, as they let us celebrate my brother's birthday with a cake we brought.

Absolutely incredible. We went as soon as it opened because we needed to schedule our meals around our puppy… So we were there by 510pm. The only issue was that it’s a little awkward being the only table in the restaurant and sitting at the sushi bar… Cause we had like eight people attending us and looking at us and listening to our every word. But you can look at it in another way and assume it felt like more of a private dining experience, which is cool. Because it was our first time there, we didn’t wanna opt for the Omakase because my husband and I have had mediocre Omakase experiences and they don’t come cheap. And something we didn’t realize that this place does, that many other Omakase places don’t do, is make their sauces in house to pair with the fish. A lot of omakase spots locally don’t care to make a budget for sauces when they can get it ready made. A huge unique selling point of this place was at each sauce was separately made and stored in different containers to pair with the fish it was intended for… And when the chef had mentioned that a lot of Omakase places don’t do this, It made a lot of sense. We ordered the Hamachi Jalapeño, tuna Crispy rice, tuna 5 ways, single nigiri pieces of sea bream and mackerel on my side and my husband ordered more basic pieces which I can’t recall. We also Ordered the Hokkaido scallop cucumber roll. As soon as we tried the apps, we regretted not doing the omakase just because we knew it was gonna be that good. For Context, I haven’t found any place in New Jersey that felt like a go to sushi spot that had high-quality fish, incredible pairings and seemingly consistent. The Hamachi jalapeño were bigger cuts of tuna with like this jalapeño paste sauce. It was amazing and proper spicy. No addtl sauce needed. The crispy rice tuna was insane. The hot rice paired with the cold tuna and their fixings were amazing. It didn’t look like much, but it packed a huge punch of flavor. I think it might be the wasabi they use But both the wasabi and soy sauce were insanely good The tuna way of our little attempt at omakase ish. They gave you four pieces of Nigiri ( 2 being fatty tuna pieces) And a chopped tuna hand roll. I’m a texture person so I wasn’t a fan of the hand, but each piece of tuna was better than the next. The fatty ones were insanely melty and lovely And I just really goes to show that I don’t think I’ve had good high quality, fresh sushi or fish from many places Because no place matched up to this. I had ordered a piece of sea bream which was insanely good. I’ve never tried anything like that before and if I could, I would order 20 of those alone. The mackerel was really good and not fishy at all as well. The Hokkaido scallop Cucumber roll was very simple, but packed a huge bunch of flavor when you dipped it in the spicy sauce that it was paired with alongside a soy sauce wasabi combo. You could taste the quality and freshness. I was drinking a glass of sparkling wine… The wine was fine before I had the sushi… But drinking a sip while eating my sushi totally changed my palette as the sparkling wine paired so well that it became sweet. Last, but not least the miso cheesecake - Absolutely incredible and made in house. We ordered two more to go And they thought we were joking. That’s how good it was. I don’t miss New York City when I have sushi from places like this.

My new go to sushi place outside of sushi aoiki omakase. Fish tasted super fresh. Everything we ordered was great. Creative desserts are a plus as well. Expensive but worth the price.

The sushi was ok. One of the pieces wasn’t fresh but the rest were ok. There was too much dressing for the amount of salad, so it was salty. The tempura was served while I was eating the sushi and the shrimp tempura was not crispy. The table was pretty big so our server could not reach to take the empty salad bowl. I couldn't understand why she had to interrupt us while we were eating to ask us to pass the empty plates 3 different times. She was very nice and friendly but it would be better if she knew how to serve. Generally, it was ok for $29.

I had my first date with my fiancé at this restaurant a year ago. And on our one-year anniversary, we celebrated at the same restaurant! I mentioned this when making the reservation! And we received dessert and drinks as complimentary service. I've visited many restaurants, but this was the first restaurant that paid such detailed attention to us! Thank you so much! This is my favorite restaurant!!

Upon entering the restaurant, I was warmly greeted by the friendly staff, making my first visit feel incredibly welcoming. The service and hospitality were exceptional, making me feel truly pampered. The food and sushi were out of this world! After struggling to find a great sushi place in Jersey, I finally found a gem. Each piece of sushi melted in my mouth, and paired with a fantastic cocktail, the experience was absolutely worth it. Also, don’t miss out on the dessert! They’re incredibly unique and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!

I came with my husband for our anniversary for a nice dinner out. Unlike most sushi restaurants, I noticed alot of the sushi staff were actually Japanese! It really seemed like we were getting a real sushi experience here at Jugemu. Everyone was very considerate and kind, and I had no trouble communicating any questions I had. Some of my favorite things were the Sashimi selection, which had a diverse and good range of fresh fish! I also enjoyed their Suntory draft beer, which luckily they had in their happy hours menu. It is my favorite Japanese beer, and not many places have them, so I recommend people to try! They also had a wide selection of Sake, which almost felt overwhelming! But the staff seem very knowledgeable, and my husband ended up getting a Sake flight, which came with 3 of their most popular Sake. Thank you for a wonderful evening, will come again!

Google
I would highly recommend anyone looking for a restaurant with delicious food and lively atmosphere. We recently dined at Jugemu that exudes a cozy and friendly atmosphere. The menu offered a delightful array of delicious Japanese dishes, each bursting with authentic flavors. I recommend to try fresh oysters here. It was creamy in texture and had an fresh splash of sea flavor that I can only describe as “yummy.” The sushi rolls, adorned with inventive combinations, marry tradition with innovation, leaving an indelible impression. What truly stood out was the impeccable service – attentive and friendly staff added to the overall positive experience. Highly recommend for a delightful Japanese culinary journey!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were in the area and decided upon sushi and landed at Jugemu. We were warmly greeted and seated right away and service was attentive and friendly. I enjoyed the best spider roll of my life. The soft shell crab was encased in the most perfect rice. My boyfriend was wowed with his selections and the green tea was fresh, hot and satisfying. We ended our meal with purple potatoes and ice cream. It was interesting and enjoyable. I would definitely return here especially to use their spotless and stylish bathroom!! Definitely highly recommend though you may need to plan in advance and make a reservation.

Yelp
My experience at JUGEMU's sushi bar was 5/5. We did the omakase and it was superb. One of the chefs is from Sushi Kai and he was phenomenal. The sushi bar has very different vibes from the rest of the restaurant which seems super family friendly. The staff went above and beyond to make our evening special, and the sushi was incredible. Every piece was unique and flavorful, and of course, fresh. Would love to come back!

Yelp
My friend raved about this place so we went for lunch. I enjoyed the appetizers(soft shell crab is excellent and the yakitori) but really didn't like the sushi(sushi lunch A).. the choices they had was meh and esp didn't like the rolls that came with. (Forgot to take a picture of this...) the tempura and miso soup was good. The portion is decent and people are very friendly. I just wasn't sure what the hype was about..

Yelp
came for dinner on a friday night, little bit last minute but they were able to accommodate a table of 3 for us. you can still get omakase even if you sit at a table and not the bar. they just bring you a tray of nigiri. we did the omakase with just nigiri, which comes with appetizer, soup, and a dessert. there's another omakase option that includes sashimi as well. we added a house salad and a crispy rice tuna appetizer as well. house salad dressing is probably closest i've come to finding a benihana dupe (and that's not a knock, it's the OG japanese dressing). the crispy rice was v crispy, taste good, but bit too crispy. the nigiri were all delicious. i requested less rice and they were happy to oblige. i would say the service was v pleasant but not knowledgeable of the nigiri we received. still, very pleasant and prompt.

Yelp
This New York City-caliber sushi restaurant is a gem of simplicity and elegance. With four to five skilled sushi chefs behind the counter and plenty of attentive waitstaff, you're greeted and treated like family from the moment you arrive. We discovered this restaurant recently, thanks to a recommendation from a nearby friend, and it did not disappoint. We tried the Omakase along with a few items from the menu, and everything was superb. The fish is top-grade, and the sushi rice is perfectly prepared--a true testament to their craft We have been back for many lunch and dinner after the first visit!

Yelp
After all the persuasion and rave about Jugemu from a friend who frequents this Japanese Sushi place, I finally had the time to squeeze in during the lunch hours for Lunch Specials (11:30 - 2:00). Quite a cozy place with not many tables. We had the Sushi Gozen A from the lunch special ($29) which comes with 6 pieces of sushi, 1 roll, 3 pieces of tempura, and choice of miso soup of salad. In addition, we ordered the Age DashinTofu, lightly fried tofu served in dashi broth .... Soooo good!!! I could drink the tofu broth ... The rice for the roll was not in the typical white rice, but brown rice/grains which is healthier, but could be bit hard for digestion for some people. Truly enjoyed our meal.

Yelp
Came here for our first time for lunch on Saturday. Their lunch special is such a great deal, and what a bonus that they don't limit it (at this point anyway) to week days only! We came to celebrate my birthday and waiting for us on the table was a card wishing me a happy birthday -- such a nice touch! The staff was so extremely attentive that we got maybe 6 water refills without asking. To start, we got the crispy rice (so crunchy!), a scallop hand roll, and a soft shell crab hand roll. Everything was good and we would order each again. For lunch, we each got the Masu Chirashi boxes. Sooo much food and good quality fish for $30! The poke box was everyone's favorite. Second best, I liked the Salmon box. For my custom order I got the spicy tuna, I thought there was just a tad too much soy sauce so next time I'd ask for light soy sauce. The bathroom is upstairs and the stairs are slightly steep. But once you make it up there, it's quite spacious and I was so excited by the Japanese heated toilets lol. We were so full and had cake at home that we didn't order dessert. Even so, the staff surprised us with the most beautifully crafted mochi. I am so blown away at the thoughtfulness!! Would definitely recommend and plan to come back!

Yelp
Jugemu is a classy sushi restaurant in downtown Cresskill. The sushi is extremely fresh and delicious and the service was impeccable. My eel was cooked well and my Father enjoyed his bowl. This restaurant has a very well earned reputation in the area. I would definitely recommend coming here.

Yelp
Always a great dinner date place! It's a small but chic restaurant. Few seats at the bar for omakase, several, booths and tables in the main room. The food is always delicious and fresh. Miso cod is tender, flaky, and flavorful - raw fish is also great. We've only had a la carte uni and otoro so far, but I'm looking forward to trying others. One rainy evening, I was craving udon. I ordered the udon soup with tempura. So yummy and filling. Made a reservation on Resy, where you can tell them why you are dining. They actually read those! For our anniversary, they surprised us with a complimentary dessert! Such a lovely way to end the evening ~ we'll be back soon!

Yelp
A hole-in-the-wall quaint sushi spot with amazing omakase. The chef and wait staff are eager to make suggestions and appease your tastebuds. A great experience start to end!

Yelp
Food: My boyfriend and I got the 8 course Prix Fixe menu ($$$). We made reservations in advance for 5:30PM. The food was delicious Sashimi was a bit cold in the beginning, but the rest of the fish was room temp. The fish was really high quality~ they even did monk fish so that it wasn't fishy! I liked their sushi, might come back and try their omakase! Their cheesecake (not shown) is Cheesecake Factory consistency and I love it! The other dessert was a matcha and red bean flavored dessert, also sweet and delicious; more for Asian palates. Service: 10/10. They're so kind and sweet! Our main waitress explained the items to us and checked in on us a couple times. One of the Asian servers was super kind and sweet! She has a wonderful smile :) Ambiance: Really fantastic ambiance! The interior is moderately sized, and the restaurant has somewhat of an upscale vibe! The waitresses and waiters are dressed in black and white. The bathroom is really nice too (bidet!!) Parking: Easy, right in front of the restaurant. Parking lot is a bit cramped, but we found empty spots. Overall: 10/10 would recommend. Of note, we chose one of their expensive food options and didn't look through the other parts of the menu.

Yelp
This is a wonderful upscale local restaurant. Inside is beautifully decorated with wooden finish. The menu is quite elegant with most types of Japanese dishes available. But each section has limited items, such as few sashimi, few hand rolls, few appetizers. There are wine, sake and regular drinks. They also have Omakase experience by counter, which needs reservation ahead of time. Foodwise, loved the eel bento box. Eel was marinated and cooked so well. Loved the taste. Sushi rolls, chicken skewers were fine. I wasn't fond of the Waygu steak, it needed to be cooked better. Everyone at the restaurant were super nice. The sushi chef was wonderful as he made couple of mini sushis for our daughter.
google avatar

Wei H.

Yelp
High end Japanese/ sushi restaurant. Simple setup but very elegant. Service is great. The chef definitely cares about all the plates he sent out. I love the chicken skewers (with sauce) and eel/cucumber hand roll. Regular roll is on the smaller portion side so I recommend get actual entree if you are really hungry.

Yelp
Food: -This cute Vday chirashi special was such a cute surprise. It included the juiciest sashimi cuts (toro, hotate, fried ebi head/tail, ebi, sake, hamachi) that were truly mouth watering & 2 mini bowls w/ chutoro, ikura and caviar! The cute heart cutouts literally made my day -Sukiyaki came w/ an onsen egg so that u could dip each veggie & meat piece in it and enjoy...and dont get me started w/ the broth (SUCH rich flavors) - Fried soft shell crab was fried to perfection and came w/ a mayo like dipping sauce w/ what I think was mentaiko? super delicious~ Ambiance: - One of the most romantic date night sushi spots in Bergen County. I've been to most of the japanese spots in bergen and can easily say that the dim light, cute and cozy vibes of this place makes it a perfect date spot‍ Service: -This has to be the main reason I give this place a 10/10!!! Staff is super kind. Honestly I've been to many great restaurants but service and staff usually end up ruining my ratings for the restaurant... But w/ that said I've never seen such great service. Our waitress was super accommodating and constantly checked to c if we needed refills on tea/water (w/o being overbearing ofc). She was quick about everything and handled everything w/ such care. At the end, who I believe was the manager started going around tables to check if everything was ok and when my bf & I stopped him to ask if we could get a picture, he not only took such cute photos of us but he actually helped us rearrange the table platings to get a cuter picture. All the gestures Jugemu's team provided us w/ made our valentine's date night superb

Yelp
Jugemu is an upscale Japanese restaurant with modern decor. I came here for lunch and came away very impressed with both the food and service. For lunch, they have a variety of set lunches that you can choose from. Most of them are in the $20-$30 range, which isn't bad. I tried the Masu Chirashi, Sushi Gozen A, and Tuna Shabu-Shabu sets and they were all delicious. The quality of fish was excellent and everything was freshly prepared. The staff was attentive and service was quick.

Yelp
Best splurge on sushi in the area! This is our go to spot for fancy sushi for lunch during weekdays. Service is always very attentive. The seating is limited (2 booths and a few tables) but always had availability on a weekday. They have several lunch options that are great deals such as the Sushi Gozen set or the chirashi. Our absolute favorite is the Masu Chirashi. It comes in 4 small square bowls that's packed with flavor. Every piece of fish we've had is really fresh (omakase level fresh). We've had the shrimp and uni shooters (strong vinegar flavor but also melts in your mouth). The fried oysters are also good. They also have seasonal menus like salmon or tuna featured dishes. They've even updated the menu to include the salmon carpaccio with yuzu from the seasonal menu.

Yelp
The quality of the fish and the knowledge of the chef make this place excellent and a must go to. Service was very good. They were very attentive and the sushi chef even talked to us while he was preparing. Follow me on IG: chaya_loves_wine I highly recommend coming here.

Yelp
So we got this flyer in the mail a few weeks ago, we wanted to try it. Our daughter, a sushi snob from Cali, wanted to try it for lunch! Well, so glad we did because the food looks even better than the pics on the flyer. She had the sushi special and I had the hot pot. Absolutely delicious, we can't wait to return with the rest of the family for dinner. The service was incredibly attentive and on point. The restaurant is modern with clean lines and spacious. A must try!

Brad N.

Yelp
Elite service w/ the highest of end execution on flavors and freshness,-- and right in your back yard. Save the commute to the city. Haven't tried it? I don't know what you're waiting for-- Those that have are nodding.

Michelle J.

Yelp
Wow. Perfect rice to fish ratio. You get a great bite because the fish is cut thick. Fresh and sophisticated taste. Sushi chefs were Japanese when I dined at the counter. A must try. Recommend

Yelp
I am literally eating dinner now(Late May 2022). It is VERY GOOD!! I have eaten Japanese foods enough to know it is a very good place. I work in NYC(last 30 years) and live in NJ near the restaurant. (Travelled to Japan about 10-15 times) It is a NEW restaurant (NOT Umeya renovated). As it's website says it is a good NYC quality Japanese place. The service is good and quick. Interior is nice and simple. And the price is reasonable(sushi prices about 30 % cheaper than NYC). I am glad the place is on RESY.

Yelp
What an amazing experience here in the 'burbs! Impeccable service, lovely, staff and food bursting with flavor!

Yelp
I dined here for the first time last night and I was def impressed. I used to live very close to the restaurant so that was nice too. The restaurant itself is pretty fancy. The quality of the food is A+. My favorite dish was the soft shell crab rolls. It was def the best soft shell crab rolls I had so far in my life. I ordered a little bit of everything and I enjoyed for sure. Its def a nice place to bring your date. The service was great too, our server was very attentive and thoroughly answered some of the questions I had. I'll def come back!

Yelp
Nicely designed and clean restaurant. The sushi is fresh and tasty but this place is extremely overpriced for what you get and the menu is really not very creative. Excellent service.

Stephen M.

Yelp
Excellent service and well prepared and presented sushi. very pricey though considering alternatives available in Bergen County.

Ducky B.

Yelp
Wait staff service is good but that's about it. Sushi is not fresh and uni that costs $20 a piece was inedible. I even told the staff that it was borderline spoiled and they didn't take it off the bill...not the way to run business. Happy hour paired food is a joke. Will definitely not be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Went there for lunch today. Observed that the chefs wore disposable gloves working on the sushi & sashimi which was expected. But, they also used the same gloves to touch everything including opening the curtain to the kitchen, moving the menu, the stapler, and other miscellaneous things on the sushi bar/counter. I t was shocking to see such unsanitary behavior by the sushi chefs. Needless to say, my wife and I left without having our meal. Will certainly never go back. Therefore, no comments on the quality of the food.

Pil C.

Yelp
I was informed by couple of friends that this new place (after umeya) was good quality but expensive. I would agree the sushi was fresh but was no way worth the price. Had the sushi platter and a "Jugemu bowl". Total of just under 100 until I added a spicy sauce and some other charge I don't know about. Anyway, nowhere near that above NYC pricing. And to be clear NYC has multiple Japanese owned and run places that are far better for that price or even lower. If u are craving really good quality sushi but reasonable prices I'd suggest Okinami in Norwood. Chef there is a former understudy of a very well known sushi chef and hands down best in northern Jersey for reasonable price.
google avatar

Yelp
This understated an unassuming store front restaurant is surprisingly elegant. Careful consideration has been put into every detail from the décor to the placement of the tableware. We were greeted warmly, and sat in our booth, with a simple table setting, including a single rosebud in a short vase. When we ordered hot sake, we were offered a selection of cera

Yelp
Authentic Japanese food is back in Creskill. Worthy successor to Umeya. 100% owned by Japanese people - I've spoken with them. Great taste and great presentation. Tempura was perfect as was the udon. Not a drop of extra oil on the tempura, great texture and mouth feel for the udon, perfect broth. Sushi is great too - very fresh and also excellent presentation.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
This might be a bit biased, but I really miss Umeya. This place is not run by Japanese people although they claim to be authentic Japanese restaurant. The food is good but not on par with Umeya. I would recommend if you have desperate craving for average Japanese food. Overall, the price to quality ratio doesn't really correlate. Wouldn't recommend but wouldn't advise people to stray away.

Jessica L.

Yelp
Beautiful place. Love the entry area ;) The sushi was great, comes at a reasonable price. I would go back to try their Omakase. When I was there, The Omakase was not available. Overall, The food was great and The service was fantastic!!!

Yelp
I enjoyed this restaurant when it was Umeya, but think Jugemu is even better, I've now eaten here about 5 times and every time the food is delicious. Incredibly fresh sushi with some classic choices and some original ones to mix it up like their goat cheese salad with their take on carrot ginger dressing. I'm also a fan of their drink list, they have a nice saki selection and a really good French Chardonnay. Also great is their unique dessert -- the green tea tiramisu is amazing. It's a little more expensive than your average sushi in the area but I think the quality is definitely worth it.

Michael S.

Yelp
I went there with my Japanese friends who used to own several Sushi restaurants in the area, and they recommended this new restaurant. This is a completely authentic Japanese restaurant. Both Sushi chefs are Japanese, and one is a chef trained in Japan. We met the non-chef owner who was also a Japanese. We ate at the counter in front of the main chef, and ordered one by one. Quality was great. Staffs were very attentive too. In Bergen county, I think this is one of the top authentic Japanese Sushi restaurants. But I was surprised to see few customers were there for such a high quality with reasonable price. You would get this quality in Manhattan but it would cost you at least double.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and high quality sushi! The design reminds me of a restaurant in the city, a real treat in the burbs.

William T.

Yelp
Food is good but have issues with takeout. Ordered takeout and the pickup time was 7.50pm. The order was ready at 7.07pm. By the time I picked up my food it was sitting there for 30mins. Prefer that my food doesn't sit around that long. They need to get that fixed.

Yelp
Incredible sushi and cooked food! Freshest I have had. The service is outstanding: warm, professional and very helpful. They have a special dipping sauce for their sushi: homemade, it is just excellent! Nice bright space, casual attire is fine. Love Jugemu! New favorite!!

Shelley T.

Yelp
This is an elegant restaurant with a chef who clearly takes pride in his creations! The sushi is so fresh and the dishes are creative , delicious, and innovative! This is an excellent restaurant and the best kept secret but it should not be a secret!!!!! The service is terrific, the staff are all very friendly yet professional . The decor is upscale , minimal, yet inviting and clean! It feels like a New York City restaurant but it is in New Jersey! Always consistently good, this place is a winner !

Yelp
Excellent omakase experience this evening. Price is extremely reasonable for the service and food. Start with a few dishes from the kitchen and then individual sushi pieces from the sushi chef. We left extremely full after the courses and enjoyed the conversation with the sushi chefs as well. Highly recommend as this evenings fish was very fresh. Would definitely return even for regular dinner service as their kitchen menu looks very good too. Hoping they add more sushi/sashimi options for dinner.

Yelp
This was an incredible meal. I did not expect to be so wowed. The freshness of the fish and the seasoned sushi rice is *chef's kiss* I cannot wait to come back, I could easily wat the salmon 5 ways everyday and die a happy lady. The eggplant was delicious as was the miso soup which had a ton of umami. The special spicy sauce is a great addition to the sushi. I will probably be back here later this week.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely experience... starting from the conscientious host to the attentive service. The quality of fish gets top marks. The Hamachi Kamayaki was superb. Sashimi was great too. Really appreciated the creativity of the tuna-five-ways (probably our favorite), the udon with tempura wow, super delish broth! And lastly the green tea tiramisu -to die for! Definitely will be buying gift certificates for our friends and family. Thank you!

Yelp
Probably the best sushi I ever had in NY Metro area. Ended up here randomly visiting a friend and we were surprised by the experience. In Cresskill by all the places!!! It's a 40 min drive from Manhattan but worth it.

Yelp
This is a NYC omakase hotspot right in here in Bergen county. The staff is amazing and the sushi omakase is delicious. Worth it!

Yelp
Ambience is very nice and clean. Service is also great. Everyone is extremely attentive and nice. The sushi / lunch sets are decent value. Food quality is above average. However the "entrees" (eg black cod or chicken) leave a lot to be desired. The portions are small and not great value. They literally do not include anything else (eg soup, vegetables or even rice!). All in all a decent experience but they can definitely upgrade some of the menu items.

Yelp
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in NJ. I could not have been happier with food and service. I had an omakase set menu on the counter. Everything from appetizer to dessert was perfect. I visited twice and I am going back again tomorrow and I am very excited. I am glad that I do not have to go to NYC to get quality Japanese food. Yusuke(I think he is the manager) remembers me and he was very attentive. I strongly recommend this restaurant for anyone craving for authentic Japanese Food.

Yelp
Was excited to try this new place. $120 Omakase. We thought it was the original owners just doing some upgrade to place and food. But it's a totally new establishment. We were expecting something close to New York sushi. Nothing near it. Not worth the money. Disappointed. I will not go again.
