I initially stayed here for four nights, but it turned into six. I don't know how this hostel has "lower" reviews. The facilities are incredibly clean, the included breakfast is great, and the staff are extremely friendly and kind.

St. Gallen Youth Hostel is a small lovely hostel located on the hillside overlooking the entire city. Great panorama. Transportation is convenient: from the train station you can take the tram to Birnbäumen, then walk downhill for about 2-3 minutes. Do visit the Drei Weieren nearby - three small reservoir lakes with stunning views.

Location in the outskirts of St Gallen, with a commanding view, but far from both the city centre and the rail station. You automatically get a "St Gallen Mobility card" that enables one to ride the trams and trolleybuses for free, however, so that can mitigate the problem somewhat. I got a private room in the basement for CHF 67.30, which I thought was good value for Switzerland until I discovered my room had an en-suite shower and sink, but no WC. And the layout was unusual, too, with a high-level window that appeared designed to let people outside look inside rather than the other way round, and a table and pair of stools positioned at the end of the room, leaving the bed nearer the door, which as far as I am concerned is doing things back to front. Generally very clean although I encountered two big spiders and their cobweb in the shower, see pictures. Good breakfast buffet and friendly service.

Absolutely warmest welcome I've ever received in a hostel. Receptionists/ managers really went out of their way to take care of their guests. Breakfast was delicious. Tea is available all day. The place is spotless and so clean. I stayed for a week and it felt like home.

Accessible from St Gallen Train Station by S21 / S22 in 10 minutes. Quiet. Accessible to Cathehedral / Abbey Library & beautiful Appenzell and Roschach. Breakfast are good. Staff are full of hospitality. Venue also suitable for retreat & seminar. Near Marketplace for all restaurants.

We stayed at the hostel this summer for one night only. The receptionist was really helpful and nice. There is no parking at the hostel. The access is through a really narrow street going steeply downhill. Rooms are in basic hostel standard. Please consider plastering the ceilings in the rooms next time you do the renovation, it will make a difference. Anyway it was ok.

Yelp
Pretty much what you'd expect from an HI-affiliated hostel in this area: clean, comfortable, well run, lots of rules, a bit Spartan. The location on top of a hill is cool, and there's lots of space outside. Walking especially up the hill could be tiring, but there are several transit options, which is free with a card you get at check in. Breakfast was a simple continental spread, with yogurt, granola, meats & cheeses, and bread. This was a very family friendly hostel, and many kids were there. There's a playground just outside and a playroom with toys & foosball. The rooms seem to be mostly 4-person, which is good to be either shared or for a family. I had read that leaving luggage on arrival day before check in was ok. We got lucky that someone was at reception when we arrived. But otherwise, I'm not sure how that would have worked: there were plenty of accessible lockers in the hallways, but it seemed normally you'd need a key fob to get in the outer door from 10a-5p.
