It’s always hit or miss trying restaurants in Salt Lake. With prices how they are, it’s hard to justify trying a new restaurant if it’s not truly special. Junah was just that experience. You will absolutely want a reservation, but they were kind enough to change mine from 2 to 3 people 90 minutes ahead of time.
The restaurant is small, the menu is limited, but everything we tried was fantastic. We ordered three appetizers, two pastas, and a dessert, and two of us had alcohol, and we were all stuffed AND had some leftovers to take home.
For appetizers, we ordered the midnight burrata (burrata and blueberry jam served with their homemade toast), the gyoza shaped ravioli (not sure what the filling was, meat and cheese, with a cheesy wafer and brown butter sauce), and the special of the evening, some kind of mussels (I discovered I’m not a fan of mussels but my friends loved them 😅). We also received complimentary bread with two kinds of butter plus some pesto with olives (the green butter and the pesto were my favorite).
Believe it or not, we were already starting to get full, so we ordered just two pastas to also share. The gnocchi alla Junah was my favorite— pillowy clouds in a rich tomato cheese sauce with a huge ball of mozzarella on top. I didn’t eat any of the clams from the fettuccine di Nira alle Vongole, but I did try some of the pasta and sauce and it was tasty. But the gnocchi were definitely my favorite. We had some of that to take home.
For dessert, we got the matcha tiramisu, which was small for the price but we were so stuffed at the point lol. It was creamy and refreshing, not too sweet, with a nice almost savory crunch from the pistachios.
I didn’t try the sake or the wine, but my friends did, and they had no complaints.
The service was leisurely and informative, but if there is one sour note, it was being told before ordering dessert that our reservation was limited to 90 minutes due to the size of the restaurant and the demand of other reservations. We still had 25 minutes left. It’s not the server’s fault and we understood, but it was a bit unexpected. Maybe that could be included on the reservation page?
I do recommend going with a group of 3-4, so you can try the different dishes and split the price. It’s expensive! I’d say it’s worth it though. It’s interesting and different enough to be special without being too adventurous.
