he Museum is housed in the Veterans Memorial Building, built in 1950-51 (Classical Revival style), originally Juneau’s Memorial Library.
It sits opposite the Alaska State Capitol. The museum packs in quite a lot within a modest space. Some highlights:
General History Gallery — timeline of Juneau’s development, pioneer/immigrant stories, businesses and industries past & present.
Tlingit Culture & Wood & Waterways — Tlingit canoe traditions, paddle types, and construction; also fishing methods.
Life on the Water — relates to Juneau’s maritime lifestyle (ferries, steamships, shipwrecks, etc.).
Politics, Personalities & Power — includes the story of how Alaska became a state, civil rights (Elizabeth Peratrovich), political developments, etc.
A large relief map showing Juneau and its geography + changes (glacial retreat, shorelines) is especially engaging.
