Road Trip Through Acadiana, Louisiana's Cajun Country | Travel + Leisure

"A cultivated wildlife and botanical site on Avery Island celebrated for bird-watching and dramatic landscaping, punctuated by a bright red Shinto torii that frames the approach to a 900-year-old Buddha gifted to a local conservationist in 1936; the gardens sit amid the island famous for its hot-sauce legacy and offer serene, cross-cultural moments of reflection." - Travel + Leisure Editors

One of the highlights of our trip was going to the jungle gardens. Beautiful grounds that you tour on your own pace in your car. There are so many places to stop and walk trails or take pics...we saw some alligators while we were going through along with some turtles..spoonbills...lots of old trees with Spanish moss hanging. The venetian gardens area is a must see and the Buddha statue. There is a nice gift shop on site and restrooms.

Lori P.

Google
So beautiful! We did the driving tour and stopped for each marker. So hot on our visit. Would definitely plan for a cooler day, if possible. Please!! Read the signs! Do not feed the alligators. Sadly, we experienced a couple that were feeding and harassing one.

Russell D.

Google
The Jungle Gardens are definitely worth a visit. I drove the route but stopped at key points to take a walk, and was very glad I did. Take the time to explore whilst listening to the audio tour, it's well worth it. All in, I spent about 2 hours exploring the gardens.

Google
Unbelievable beauty. It was a sort of drizzly when we went but this also assured no one else was in the garden that day which was nice. The peace and calm was so hypnotizing I didn’t wana leave. I could walk around there every day.

CJ D.

Google
It was a hot day and we were in a hurry, so we just drove through. Riding next to the river is a pretty view, and we saw a few people out on jet skis. Huge oak trees touch the ground, and bamboo gives off a peaceful vibe. It’s a great place to take pictures. The holly hedge arch was kind of neat to drive through. I’d love to go back when the azaleas, wisteria, or camellias are in bloom. I didn’t get to take pics because I was driving.

Google
An amazing experience. We enjoyed the 3 mile walk through the grounds, seeing several alligators along the way, bunnies, egrets, squirrels, and spiders. Along with the huge moss covered trees there is an interesting sense of danger from the wildlife. There is a free parking lot at the ticket cabin and free passage onto the island.

Courtney R.

Google
I planned an impromptu trip to the jungle gardens with my family, and since I love nature, it was an easy choice for me! But everyone had an amazing time, too. We were a large group, and I believe I spent around $100 on entry fees for all of us, which was definitely worth it. The grounds were simply stunning and so peaceful. To be honest, I’ve never seen such vibrant greenery! The kids had a blast searching for wildlife like gators and birds. They snapped pictures of all the gorgeous views and enjoyed running around in the grassy areas. We even took some family photos together! Honestly, I can’t wait to return to this beautiful garden.

Jerrica B.

Google
It was so beautiful. They had deer grazing, rabbits playing, and egrets flying by. Signs for bear sightings and alligators, but we didn't see any.

Yelp
We spent a few hours driving and walking through this beautifully preserved piece of nature on Avery Island after doing the self-guided tour of the Tabasco Factory, that ticket includes the Jungle Garden experience. We couldn't have picked a better day to visit the area, the temperature was perfect with low humidity and no bugs - you must allow yourself plenty of time to soak in the peaceful surroundings and get out of your vehicle to get up close to the wonders of this garden. Besides the beautiful grounds and water structures there are plenty of surprises you'll discover along the way we unfortunately didn't see any alligators or deer today but there were an abundance of birds, a few turtles basking in the sun and lots of squirrels scurrying through the grounds and giant oak trees. This is a beautiful place and just one of the wonders you'll find while exploring Louisiana I've lived in Louisiana for almost half my life and I'm still amazed at the beauty this state has to offer this is just one of the many places that's preserved and protected for generations to enjoy and appreciate...

Yelp
This is a great activity to spend a few hours, especially on a nice day. It's a good mix of driving and walking around or you can choose to just drive and listen to the self guided tour. We saw lot of alligators. The bird city was neat too. You could hear the birds well before you could see them. At the park entrance there is a little gift shop too with snacks, drinks, bathrooms and souvenirs.

Yelp
The Jungle Garden tour is included as part of your self guided Tabasco Sauce Factory Tour. The Jungle Garden tour is 3 miles with 14 designated points of interest to investigate and you have the option to do this on foot or as a driving tour (I suggest the driving tour). The focal point of the tour is a large Buddha statue which is believed to be over 900 years old and it arrived to Avery Island in 1936 as a surprise gift. When I did the tour you were given a stamp card and if you checked in at all the attractions to complete your stamps you got a free jar of pickled green beans. Overall this was a nice addition to the Tabasco Factory Tour! Tip: Take a Saturday to do the Avery Island Tabasco Sauce and Jungle Garden tour in the morning with a breakfast at the Tabasco Restaurant 1896 then do lunch at Rip Van Winkle Gardens Jefferson Cafe and do that tour in the afternoon for a full day adventure. Then head into Lafayette and stay at the Blue Moon Saloon & Guesthouse get some ice cream at the Borden's Dairy Dip across the street then go back to the guesthouse to enjoy the music.

Yelp
Have you seen Jumanji?? Well if you want to experience the thrill of Jumanji, you can just come here and experience the Jungle Gardens. I felt absolute fear and wonder all at the same time while exploring. It's probably the same feeling as a modern day Jurassic parks experience. This is a 3 mile experience created by Edward Avery McIlhenny who brought his love as a naturalist and conservationist into building this attraction. He converted his natural estate into Jungle Gardens by decorating it with exotic botanical specimens from all over the world. It was opened to the public in 1935 and since then it has been a tourist destination, wildlife refuge and botanical marvel. Our admission to the Jungle Garden was included with our entrance to the Tabasco Factory Tour. This consists of 14 stops within the 3 mile loop in which you have the option to walk, bike, hike or drive. Honestly I would be too scared to walk, bike or hike. Driving is the way to go! Stop 1: Giant Oak Trees Stop 2: Bayou Petit Anne/Marsh Trail Stop 3: Alligators Stop 4: Boat House Stop 5: Venetian Gardens Stop 6: Cleveland Oak Stop 7: Holly Hedge Stop 8: Buddha Temple Stop 9: Wisteria Arch Stop 10: Palm Gardens Stop 11: Bird City Stop 12: Timber Bamboo Stop 13: Sunken Gardens Stop 14: Camellia Nursery The only stop we made an exception for was Stop 8 where the Buddha was not too visible from the street. My boyfriend convinced me to get off cause he knows I wanted a close view of Buddha. I didn't get too close since the geography was sketch... and need I remind you Stop 3 was just Alligators. Yikes! The air was also swampy and muggy. I was seriously afraid of getting mosquito bites. The experience is about 40 minutes if you took a quick drive through but I noticed the other folks visiting took their time to enjoy this place so prepare at least an hour for your visit or more time if you plan on getting out of the car and exploring further. Definitely a neat experience unlike any other. If you are already on Avery Island visiting the Tabasco museum, you should also set aside time for this attraction.

Yelp
Incredible way to spend the day after you tour the Tabasco Factory on Avery Island. It is a network of stops that you can easily do with a car. Every stop had something unique to offer. We saw wildlife, a Buddhist temple, and beautiful blooms, just to name a few.

Yelp
The Jungle Gardens are an absolute must if you happen to be in the vicinity of Avery Island, LA or you're already touring other parts of the Tabasco property. It turned out to be another highlight of my road trip through Louisiana and Mississippi last summer. Sadly, there's only one true National Park in the Deep South: Congaree in South Carolina, which I found absolutely baffling after seeing so many national treasures on this trip such as this. Meanwhile, I'm completely surrounded by National Parks in Las Vegas. I digress. Note 1: I was born and raised in the South. The reference to the Deep South in my comment includes the following areas: Alabama, East Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Florida, and South Carolina. Note 2: The Deep South contains multiple NPS sites (e.g, national monuments, national seashores, military parks, national heritage areas, etc.), but only one true National Park.

Trinity C.

Yelp
Always beautiful, definitely a place to check out when azaleas are in bloom. Recommend leaving your car at the check-in and enjoy a self guided tour.

Yelp
The admission price to the TABASCO® Factory Tours is actually a 2 for 1 deal. It also includes admission to the Jungle Gardens - a 170 acre botanical garden and bird sanctuary. Jungle Gardens was created by the son (Edward Avery "Ned" McIlhenny) of the Tabasco sauce inventor (Edmund McIlhenny). It began as a Snowy Egret refuge, then as a nursery that featured exotic plants. The McIlhenny home is also on this estate, but is closed off to the public. Visitors have the option to walk, hike, bike or drive the 3 mile garden trail. We stopped by the Jungle Gardens gift shop to present our tickets before driving in and starting our self-guided tour. The drive through the park reminds me of the Jeep tour in the Jurassic Park movie. There's no track, but we were able to make stops along the way to see the wildlife and attractions. The dinosaurs are replaced by alligators. Some areas of the park would be so nice to picnic, but not very safe. We didn't see any egrets due to this time of year.
google avatar

Nelson A.

Yelp
I was hoping for something more majestic and inspiring. My family love to hike and walk in nature. Having cars drive by as you are walking through the park was really disturbing and took away from they idea of nature. We did happen to see an alligator with babies and that helped make it a little better. The love oaks were amazing and beautiful but it wasn't enough to offset the vehicle disturbance. I would also highly recommend wearing bug spray. My wife and daughter were pretty tasty for mosquitoes.
google avatar

McKinleigh A.

Yelp
We came on a hot day. The ticketing system is awful. You have to go in the gift shop to get your tickets. They tell you that it is three miles you can walk or drive. The signs are not marked well at all. Also there is alligators which is a nice touch. Driving would have been better, there is a lot of mosquitoes. Buy bug spray if you do not already have it. I would have skipped coming here if I could. It was kind of a waste of time.
google avatar

Jasmine S.

Yelp
The Jungle Garden allows you to walk through the area with a map or you can drive. It was nice to do a self pave activity.

Yelp
I came in November. I had a wild hair to visit the Tabasco Factory and was not aware there was this joyful place attached to it. The flowers were not in bloom this time of year, but everything was so peaceful, green and lush. I did see several alligators in the waters. You pay for admission to the Tabasco Factory Tour, and this is included. The gardens were created by the owners of the Tabasco Factory. There is a gift shop here and the clerk there will give you a map of the driving tour. There are several spots to get out and walk around. There is the boat house along one strip of water. Several out buildings and a very large Buddha inside of a building. There are spots on the tour that the road becomes very narrow and other spots where the trees and other shrubbery are very low hanging and grow close to the road. I would not recommend coming in a large vehicle. I am most certainly glad I came and very grateful that this is here in Louisiana. What an amazing place. Truly a gem. I do look forward to coming back in the spring to see the flowers in bloom.

Yelp
Jungle Gardens is located on Avery Island which is owned by the McIlhennry family. They also own and operate the Tabasco Plant. This particular section of the island was set aside as a conservation area back in the 1930s. Jungle Gardens is not really a jungle, but the animals, i.e. alligators and snakes, that you may encounter here are wild and could cause you harm. It's not quite a botanical garden either, but it does have a variety of flowers like camellias and plants cultivated like the holly archway. It's not quite a park in the traditional sense; for instance you won't see anyone playing frisbee with their kids here, but it does have some designated walking paths, offer informative placards about points of interests and provide a gravel driving loop to cruise through the area. It's got a little bit of everything for everyone, and makes an ideal family outing. If you find yourself on the southern tip of Louisiana, then by all means make time to drive the Jungle Gardens loop. You can pay a discounted price for admission to both Jungle Gardens and the Tabasco Factory tour. The road is loose gravel and dirt. It is wide enough for one car. The road is one way. You can't get lost because the road loops through the entire area. There are about 15 placards throughout detailing what you might see and enjoy. If you stop at the Cabin at the entrance, the staff will give you a map that also highlights the different park features. Several of the placards are at small parking lots where you can get out and walk a short distance to see a point of interest. You can expect to spend and hour or two if you take your time. This place is worth visiting at various times of the year and at different times of the day. At the beginning of the year (January and February), you are likely to see large numbers of the snowy egret at "Bird City". In the spring, you can expect to see the large variety of camellias in bloom. In August and September, alligators have their babies, so smaller ones might be seen. Although, you are likely to see alligators no matter the time a year in the shallow alligator ponds at the entrance of the park. I probably would not make the long drive across Louisiana to visit just this place, but if you are into bird watching, you just might. It is definitely worth a gamder if you are already in the
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful place. Bring spray or a thermacell. The skeeters were really bad the weekend we was there. Would like to come back in spring when more thinks we're in bloom.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Jungle Gardens is a paradise. It is on Avery Island, across from the Tabasco factory. They have so much to see-you can see your share of alligators here, as well as the greenery. It is worth a stop. They also have a sweet gift shop as you enter.

Arlon F.

Yelp
Jungle Gardens does not accept American cash for admittance or their gift shop. I will not buy on credit when i have cash in my pocket. I swear that i will never return and i will never buy another Tabasco product ever again. The employees in the gift shop were extremely unfriendly and were just in their personal telephones. I boycott any and every business that does not accept American cash so goodbye Jungle Gardens and Avery Island and all tabasco products. Very Un-American.. Guessing that foreigners bought the place. I do not recommend supporting such a company !!!
google avatar

Angie T.

Yelp
Louisiana is a beautiful place..all over our great state you'll be in for a treat. Eye candy aplenty. There are quite a few pretty places but Jungle Gardens on Avery Island has to be among the very best here. I grew up near Avery Island. I spent many days crabbing off of the dock here and watching alligators swimming and deer walking around like it was just a normal day with no target on their backs. It is the integral reason why I love nature and our earth so very much. I was lucky enough to visit again recently. Coming home feels very good. Where else do you get wonderful southern hospitality, beautiful algae topped swamps housing gators, sunken gardens, a bad ass Budda, the coolest stone bridge and camellia trees (yep...camellia TREES, y'all)? Right here in your very back yard, Nola. Oh and the home of Tabasco hot sauce. Nectar of the gods.. Yes. Yes. Yes.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
The Jungle Gardens are located on Avery island and are apart of the land owned by the Tabasco family. For 8.00 per person you can do a self guided part car-part walking tour of the Gardens. There is no time line and you can park and walk as much as you desire. The landscape of this place is gorgeous. There are tons of plants from around the world, swampy landscape where gators are lying around( I never saw any) and even a big ass buddah statue that was stolen from China according to the little plaque. Really not sure how it's still here if that is true. Anyway it's a very peaceful , naturific place to just chill and frolic. I would say that spring time would be the best time to go when all the flowers are in bloom. I would stay the hell away in the summer as I'm sure it's Africa hot out and the mosqitoes would be torture. Definitely worth the detour if you are in the area.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
A very pleasant and laidback loop trail. You can see all sorts of wildlife and experience the beauty of this unique landscape. You can drive and stop or just walk the whole thing. We had an app that we downloaded which narrated the tour as we went. A must see if you are in the area.
google avatar

Felicia G.

Yelp
Definitely do both, the Jungle Gardens and The Tabasco Tour if visiting from far away. Admittedly I'm from the north, so seeing this type of wildlife and scenery is more fascinating to me, so if you're from the area it might not hold your interest as much. I visited in July, it was too warm to spend the whole time outside, so even though I would have loved to walk the whole route, I drove and parked my car along the way, getting out to view each sight. Bird City was the highlight of my time spent there, to see so many Snowy Egrets in one natural setting was beautiful. I also was able to spy five different alligators in the lagoons. One even beached itself on the grass right next to the path, which made for great pictures from the safety of my car window!
google avatar

Annie H.

Yelp
These gardens are huge. You drive through them, but there are plenty of places to stop and get out. We saw plenty of alligators in the beginning. The Buddha gardens were my favorite with the stone bridge and little temple. At the end of the gardens is the white birds. There are hundreds of them sitting on these little posts. You can climb up high and see them.
google avatar

Paige M.

Yelp
What a gorgeous place! Created by the same family that made the Tabasco Factory, it's right down the road! You can listen on your phone to an audio tour as you go through. You also can get out and walk at certain trails. We loved the live oaks covered with Spanish moss and the Bird Paradise FULL of Snowy Egrets!
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
Prices are reasonable, you can pay for pass to this only or add pass to hot sauce tour /side. And do both. You can drive though the gardens and there's various spots to park and walk or you walk the entire thing. Its very beautiful and different things to see. Nice and clean place to tour. This can take over a hour and if you are doing this plus hot sauce tour can be a couple of hours. Great family day
google avatar

Jiwon H.

Yelp
This place is a huge outdoor park and it is beautiful. There was a bride taking wedding pictures when I visited so you know how amazing it truly is! My tip is, pretty go when the spring is around because few of the attraction spots are made up of flowers and I went in November and of course, there were no flowers, birds, etc... But I must say, the oaktrees are amazing... p.s: The budda statue... The door was closed :(
google avatar

Stacy S.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I took a Sunday day trip to The Jungle Gardens this past weekend. We had the most fun driving through the gardens and stopping at the different stops along the way. We especially enjoyed getting a closeup view of the alligators! It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
I am giving this two stars based on my experience, meaning I am sure this could have been better, but we saw no animals except two ducks the whole time and bird city had been abandon. This being said, we wish there had been a sign or something saying "hey this time of year tour may be lame" just giving us a heads up. As we also hoped to see gators, but saw none. Buddha was cool and trees were fine, but just sort of blah.
google avatar

Keith F.

Yelp
This place is beautiful for the most part. I loved all of the huge old oaks and birds. Some of the trees have markers and historical importance. I loved the area around the Buddha statue. That is where we saw our only gator of the day. It is a wonderful place to take pictures. We also saw some of the biggest spiders in my life. Some of the stone steppers are loose so be careful as you are hiking around. We chose to walk some and drive the rest. While I probably wouldn't rush to come back it is definitely worth at least one visit. The birds were breathtaking. If you are one of the people leaving garbage behind that is so lame.
google avatar

Mel T.

Yelp
Jungle Gardens is separate from the Tabasco Factory tour. It's still on Avery Island but it's the opposite side. Tickets are $8. You can choose to walk or drive through. Since we were in a time crunch, we decided to drive. It worked out perfectly since we were also feeling lazy! There is lots to see, including a bird sanctuary for snowy egrets, a random statue of a Buddha, and swamps with alligators. I was told that gators can run pretty fast. We saw a few swimming so we got out of the car to take some pictures. We definitely left the doors open so we could run back in, if needed. Luckily, we didn't have to. If you have the time (and energy), I would recommend walking. I feel like we didn't get to see as much with driving.
google avatar

Megan J.

Yelp
What a fun and beautiful way to spend a day! It is$1 to get onto the island and $8 per person to do the Jungle Gardens tour. It is a self guided tour so you can stop and walk around whenever you feel like it. We took an entire 2 hours. Highlights for me were walking down paths and seeing 5 different alligators. We don't have those in NC! The Buddha was very cool and surprising addition. The only negative is all of the bugs... bugspray is a MUST. I got tons of bug bites even with spray. I can't imagine without it. Overall, a pleasant experience and great for someone out of state who doesn't see the swamp lands often.

Tammie W.

Yelp
I would do this again in a heartbeat. We went to through the Tabasco Factory first and did enjoy the rich history and learned a lot. Then to the "Jungle." Far from a jungle as it was all very well maintained and manicured. We thought we were going to walk and certainly glad we didn't. It is much longer than we expected (which was GREAT) and I don't do well in the heat. The trees...oh my! Spectacular...huge and so full of life, history and beauty. The bamboo...WOW...Especially Loved the area you could walk in to and take photos. Left us wondering what they do with all the bamboo that falls...it was so very peaceful and a great break from the sun. I could go on and on about the beauty...the "baby" alligators we saw...all the birds and more bamboo and trees. Green, lush, peaceful, you can go at your own pace/leisure. SO PEACEFUL. Its like going from the hustle and bustle of a big city to nothing but peace and quiet except for the birds talking and singing. Majestic! And all for $15..EPIC
google avatar

Kelli P.

Yelp
This was a nice garden and well suited to our mobility. My husband cant walk well so driving was well worth it. We could stop along the way and walk and then jump in our car because it was so hot. We enjoyed the bird city the best. It was amazing the forethought to conserve these birds when they were endangered. They created a rookery for the birds to nest.
google avatar

Nadine F.

Yelp
If you're going to visit the Tabasco factory at Avery Island, you might as well make a stop at Jungle Gardens. The setup is kind of reminiscent of a drive through zoo, but you can park your car anywhere to walk around, or just walk the whole thing. There isn't a huge variety of animals to look at, but I was satisfied by getting within a foot of a small alligator. There are lots of little alligators, birds, and turtles, and it's a really nice place to walk around. There's also an interesting 900 year old Buddha statue with an interesting story behind it. I don't know if I'd go out of my way to visit Jungle Gardens, but I definitely enjoyed it, and I was in the area anyway for the Tabasco factory tour. It's a good attraction for adults and children alike.
google avatar

Sharon J.

Yelp
Just got home (Hammond LA) from a lovely day out. Saw a couple baby gators, tons of egrets and beautiful azaleas. I also would like to say when we bought out tickets they gave us some spicy pickled okra. Now I love okra but never had it pickles and let me tell you that I was very pleasantly surprised. Super yummy and just the right amount of spice. Thanks for a great day. Only 4 stars because we didn't get our senior discount.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
If you don't mind the alligators running loose, then you will be okay about coming here! Just watch where you step or watch where you're driving. We had seen a couple alligators in areas that we did not expect to see one. Not sure if they are tame or not, but don't ever believe an alligator is tame; they have really sharp teeth! The grounds were beautiful though and very large, so if you get started early, you may be able to walk the whole thing. It's an easy drive, too and you can park at different stopping points to stroll around the various areas. Without giving too much away, you'll be in awe of the majestic beauty here and the greenery is vast. Hang off some tree vines, while you're here and soak in nature. It's very well maintained and very peaceful. You can even tour the Tabasco plant first before coming here, then spend the rest of your day here (gardens close at sundown). There is a fee you have to pay to enter the gardens.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
This is a nice way to spend half a day of your in the area. First, take the jungle gardens tour which is a 3 mile drive through the gardens of Avery Island. There are beautiful trees, plants , birds, alligators and we even saw a raccoon. lol. Then, after that head over for the Tabasco plant for a tour of the facility and be sure to stop in the Tabasco country store. If you like Tabasco, you can buy anything imaginable with the Tabasco label or with Tabasco in it including ice cream and soda pop!! Enjoy your time here as its a relaxing time!
google avatar

Anawin K.

Yelp
After touring this garden, I can say that it is one of my favorite places in Louisiana. It is so beautiful. Great place to take pictures. The landscape is amazing. You can either drive or walk through the garden. There are different areas in the park where you can park your car. The main attractions include oak trees, alligators, Buddha statue, bird city, bamboo, Wisteria arch, Venetian garden, and many more! If you are here to tour the Tabasco factory, I highly recommend you tour the garden also. It is so well maintained. I was a little sad I didn't see any gators on the day we went, but it's okay. They were all in hiding! I did see a snake though. The employees who work in the gift shop were extremely friendly. They were very helpful in asking any questions I had. It may be a few years before I actually return, but I highly recommend this garden to anyone who comes to visit to Avery Island. You won't regret it, I assure you!
google avatar

Judy S.

Yelp
We absolutely loved Jungle Gardens! It's beautiful and worth a visit. When we came in December, there weren't any alligators that we could see but there were tons of uniquely beautiful birds and flora! The grounds are beautiful and large. I'd recommend driving and parking/walking whenever you'd like along the driving trail. To walk the whole garden probably would take all day. There is a fee, but it's definitely worth it.
google avatar

Gabriela M.

Yelp
A beautiful way to spend your day. Admittedly, my sole reason for visiting Avery Island was because I'm a huge fan of Neutral Milk Hotel and their album "On Avery Island". I'm not sure what I thought I would get out of coming to Avery Island but I certainly wasn't expecting how beautiful the jungle gardens turned out to be. You drive through the garden but you are at liberty to get out of your car (provided you can find a place to park on the side of the road) and walk around to your heart's content. There are alligators everywhere and, should you wish to get bitten, you could walk right up to them because there are no dividers between you and the water or animals. The Bird City observation area is spectacular. It gets kind of hot up there in the dead of summer so make sure you bring a lot of water, since you will probably want to spend some time watching the birds interact and watching the alligators creep along in the water and swim up to them perhaps in search of dinner. I wasn't too impressed by the Buddha status but yeah, it's there and worth a viewing. I was more interested in the giant grasshoppers and spiders you could find crawling around the statue. According to the website the gardens close at 5pm, but when you buy your tickets the ticket sellers will tell you that their gift shop closes at 5pm but you can walk along the premises of the gardens until sundown. So that is something to keep in mind as you plan your trip.
google avatar

Hunter T.

Yelp
This place is very beautiful. There are alligators to look at, bamboo forest trails, stone bridges, and a BEAUTIFUL Buddha statue overlooking a pond. I would highly recommend this place if you want a day of casual strolling through beautiful gardens.

Yelp
About a month ago, we decided to travel West to New Iberia. Gabe wanted to check out Avery Island. I lived not far from there for many years but never took advantage of how peaceful and serene this place is. It's mostly driving around. There is a fee. I think it was $8/person. You pay at the little store in the beginning. But there is also a $1 fee to get into.... or is it onto Avery Island? Anyway, you drive to different points of interest according to a colorful map, park and walk. Not too much walking but for those not in shape, it could be tough. You don't have to walk at all really. Just ride in the car with the windows down and enjoy the scenery. So quiet and peaceful. Only wished there were benches.... or hammocks. I want to live there :)

Yelp
Jungle Gardens is a wonderful driving tour with a few stops to enable experiencing the bayou from you car. There are a few trails to walk to Bird City and Buddha, but mostly it is a car ride. I am sure that a little later in spring, when everything is blooming it would be a real five star event. Especially when the wisteria blooms. Winter is a little sparser on the vegetation, The birds and gators are out there. Be patient and you will see them too.

Yelp
An excellent experience in any weather, and I mean it! As we got tickets and started to drive, it started to rain. Hard. It quickly became a thunderstorm and lightning and thunder were booming all around us, in the ever-heavier rainfall. As we rounded one flooded corner, the road disappeared under a pool of water, but we trudged on in our rented Nissan Versa. It's literally like being in a rainforest. We half-expected to see a Dilophosaurus spitting at a fat guy in a jeep ala Jurassic Park. Will definitely be back on a sunny day to actually see stuff rather than to survive the flooding. But we had a blast!

Yelp
So fun! Stay in the car and drive around or choose to get out at some spots. We did both. We saw two gators and you have to get out and see the Buddha. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Definitely the most beautiful place I've been to so far in the United States. I highly recommend making the drive out to Avery Island and visiting this beautiful and scenic compound. The buddha area was the unexpected highlight, but it's all worth it! Pack a blanket and a lunch and have a little picnic!!!

Yelp
I am so glad I visited this place. Jungle gardens are absolutely breathtaking. I purchased the tickets with the Tabasco factory self-guided tour and was happy with the price. You can either walk the gardens or drive, it was very hot the day we visited so we decided to drive. You get to see gators (be careful) just chilling in the water, some of the most beautiful Spanish moss I have seen in Louisiana as well as a statue of Buddha over looking the beautiful lake. We saw beautiful birds and flowers. This place is so calm and serene. Heaven on earth!!

Yelp
Just love this place. It is my second trip. This time I brought the daughter and wife and both fell in love. It is well maintained, the area is beautiful and the staff is fantastic. The price is worth it. The only thing I would really recommend is that you bring a lunch and have a picnic. There is lots of space to le the kids run wild or sit with that special someone.

Yelp
My friends, wife, and I really enjoyed our tour of the Jungle Gardens. The experience is well worth the $8 admission. We were able to drive and walk around it in about 90 minutes and really enjoy the experience. We saw beautiful gardens, alligators, other wildfowl, and the famous Buddha. I can highly recommend visiting this garden when you're on Avery Island. One tip is that your admission ticket is good for the entire day. So you can spend some time in the garden, leave to go to the Tabasco Factory area or elsewhere, and then return for an additional visit.

Yelp
If you like Botanical Gardens this place is for you. A great, nearly deserted garden with alligators. Everything is super nice. Plants. Ponds. More plants... The real treasure though is an ancient Buddha statue. From 1100. Yes, you read that correct. A 900 year old Buddha statue somehow made it to the middle of nowhere in Louisiana. There's a story behind it too--something about a rogue general stealing, taking it to New York in 1900, Selling it--and finally purchased as a gift to one of the heirs of the garden. Wild story.

Yelp
Sadly they have stopped maintaining the gardens. Now all there is to see are ponds and grass. There are no flowers to see. They are relying on pictures and stories of the way things used to be. You do not even get to see the house, inside or out.
