Review of JW Marriott Clearwater Beach (stay May 2023)
Overall, we had an exceptional stay. Highly responsive management who puts a lot of effort into training staff and ensuring guests have a great experience. The staff and their welcoming demeanor are the standout for this property. Loves: pet friendly, private beach, swanky pool, great for couples. Opportunities for improvement**: activities and stuff to do curated by the hotel, better breakfast at Latitude, more shopping options inside the hotel. **We stayed during their grand opening month. As a business owner myself, I know how hard it is to get a new location off the ground. That being said, many of my "cons" or suggestions may be fully resolved or a simple product of being in the early days of the hotel, so take them with a grain of sand and be sure to give this business the grace and understanding it deserves as it gets into full gear**. Accommodations
My husband and I stayed in the One Bedroom Residence (Room 912), which is a bit under 1000sf, has a large balcony, and was directly facing the private beach. It was a great room with the type of conveniences that allow you to use and enjoy the space, especially with a group larger than 2. The view from the room was stunning. During the day, it's beautiful shades of blue as far as the eye can see, and at night you can hear the waves and see the lights of the bridge or other properties in the distance which look pretty cool too. Bonus, when we were there there was a large event that had fireworks we got to enjoy from our patio. More details on each part of the room below--
Bedroom
Pro
Spacious. Great views from the bedroom, from the bed, and there is direct balcony access from bedroom. Our room had a large kind bed, large dresser with 6 larger drawers for comfortably storing things and one of the drawers had a safe inside for use. The bed had convenient plugs, outlets, and night lights affixed to headboard. There were two night stands, a standing lamp, and a lounge chair in the room as well. Passed the clean sheets test. I found the mattress and overall sleep comfortable and had no complaints. It's a lovely room, with a great view, and enough space to not feel on top of one another. We kept our dogs crate in the room in the corner and still had more space than needed, which is the way I want to feel in a suite.
Con
While I found the mattress and overall sleep comfortable and had no complaints, my husband didn't care for the pillows. For him, the pillows were a bit too soft. I called down to the front desk to request a different type of pillow and they didn't have anything. It would be great to have more options for comfort, but I fully understand that they can't be expected to have every shape and firmness option under the sun to match everyone's unique preference. Totally understandable, and, for that reason, I think discerning travelers should bring their preferred pillows with them. One thing is that I wish the room (bedroom or living room) had a desk. I understand it's vacation, but I really prefer to have a desk and place to do work in the event something comes up. Also, there was no AC adjustment in the room, so you have to walk to the living room to make adjustments, which is not the end of the world, but preference would be to have the option to adjust the AC in both main rooms of the suite. Overall, the cons are little personal preferences, but the room was overall exceptional and recommended.
Bathroom
Pro
A very spacious bathroom. There's a nice large tub and shower next to one another, separate by a single sink and cabinet area with plenty of storage space, and toilet.
Con
It's a little thing, and it is what it is at this point, but as a married couple a single sink instead of a double sink is just not preferred. Again, it's totally doable for a vacay, but double sinks are just better, especially when you are sharing a bathroom. A bigger deal to me is the fact that there is no separate door/closure for the toilette. I am all for a separate toilet when you are forced to share one bathroom! Also, the shower and bathtub are kinda combined and on top of each other spatially, so you can't really have two people there (one showering/one bathing at the same time), also the water from the shower leaks into the rest of the bathroom. Would prefer a separate enclosure and the bathtub and shower separated instead of together. Again, just preferences, not significant cons and there is nothing ultimately wrong with the bathroom.
Living room
Pro
The living room is spacious with great views and the convenience of access to balcony directly from living room. There's a large couch with a built-in pull out bed in case you want to share the room with guests in the living area and guests in the bedroom, which can be fully closed off by a separate door.
