"A classic JW Marriott, this modern, glass-and-steel property offers top-notch amenities, personalized service, and a prime location just steps from Copacabana Beach. The marble lobby features a mezzanine breakfast spot and casual Brazilian restaurant, while the contemporary, black-and-white rooms face either an interior atrium or the oceanfront. Book an executive level room for access to the lounge with complimentary breakfast, snacks, and drinks, then keep the kids occupied with special touches like beach toys and treats at turndown. Guests can also look forward to a rooftop food truck that serves international street food, craft beers, and cocktail pitches by the pool, as well as a spa and fitness center overlooking the beach. Nearly everything you’ll need is within walking distance of the hotel, and the nightlife of Ipanema and Leblon is just a quick taxi ride away."

I stayed at this hotel about 15 years ago and, to be perfectly frank, was not impressed. The place was a bit dingy and the service was appalling. But on this trip, I decided to give it another go and am delighted I did. Not only is the hotel looking spotlessly clean and in great shape, but the staff and service are first-rate. Friendly, smart, professional, I can’t say enough good things about the staff. The check-in was a breeze and the front desk clerk answered every question we could come up with. Another notable staff member was in housekeeping. Our room attendant, Vanessa was fantastic. We had a bit of trouble with a leaking bidet hose and she organized for maintenance to come up right away while she cleaned the room in a jiffy. The difference between my last visit and this visit is night and day. The only thing I would fault is the food in the executive lounge on the 9th floor. It’s really bad and not only bad but they serve everything on bread and butter plates which looks even worse — like a cheap airport lounge. They should offer fewer things, make better scrambled eggs and use salad size plates.

Stayed for 1 week, the service from all the staff around the hotel was great, rooms were cleaned daily and had a coffee pod machine/ tea available. I must comment on how comfy the beds were, had a great night sleep! Only mistake I made was booking room only, there were very few places around for a good quality breakfast in the morning so ended up eating at the hotel anyway and paying daily, worth the price though as great options available at the continental breakfast buffet.

The location is perfect, right in the middle of all the action in front of Copacabana Beach. The building itself needs an update. The rooms are comfortable, but small, and not particularly impressive. But they were 1000% times better than the 4 star hotel down the street I stayed at previously. What made the difference was the kindness and attention of the staff. I had fallen ill from something I had eaten offsite the night before, and everyone I interacted with at the hotel was so helpful. They went out of their way, sending a technician right away to help clear the drain in my sink that I had clogged. They sent someone else to offer to clean up, who offered me fresh coconut water. They brought a whole coconut with a straw in it, to help me soothe my stomach. They extended my check-out, even though I know they were in high season and needed the room. They gave me the space to rest and recover. I only had to dial one number to get help, whereas in other hotels they made me call multiple lines. The person answering the guest services line took care of everything.

Amazing staff -we were helped by Temitope, Jared & Erika. They really made our stay worthwhile. The front desk was always ready to help, and we never wanted for anything. The cleaning crew would leave little notes on our pillows with chocolates that were delicious. The hotel itself was exquisite & elegant. We know that we are customers and that this is employment, but the staff really made you feel like family. It was nice to see them after a day at the beach. We didn’t want to leave. Thanks, JW.

I stayed here for three nights and can clearly say that this is not what I expect of a 5 star hotel. The hotel is outdated - and it shows in every corner - from the reception, to the elevators (which was not working properly), to the room. The carpets look worn and dirty. The room I stayed in smelled musty as soon as I walked in, and I had to wash all my clothes when I returned back home to get rid of the smell. ||The room was well equipped and bed was comfortable. The cleanliness and service was good (the people working there did a very good job) and the location is of course super, but at this price I expect so much more. This place needs a serious renovation. I would suggest looking elsewhere if you want a comfortable and pleasant stay.

Google
Travel to Rio often for work and leisure, have stayed at this property perhaps about 10+ stays mainly because this is the only Marriott in Copabana/Ipanema/Leblon area. The hotel needs a major renovation, the hardware product is very tired as many other reviewers commented, it really doesn't live up to the JW Marriott brand in terms of product and is more like a Sheraton. Room leaves a lot of desire for, if you are unlucky and don't have an ocean view room, looking into an atrium is simply depressing, gym facilities needs more space and better equipment, spa facilities is a small sauna in the changing room, there is a spa but I prefer going to Fairmont/Copacabana Palace which have better facilities, the rooftop pool is very poorly designed so I've never used it, the Club Lounge on the 9th Floor offers good F&B throughout the day. Fairmont down the road is much better product and facilities in the same price point, just wished that it was a Marriott instead of Accor... ||The service in general are friendly but no matter what Marriott status level you are (Ambassador/Titanium, etc.) just manage your expectations and never expect an early check-in time at this hotel. In fact in my 10+ stays here I have only 1 time gotten the room at the 3pm check in time, the rest of my stays I have to expect to wait long past the check in time of 3pm. Think the housekeeping efficiency and speed may need to be improved. For stays that my international flights that arrives early in the morning, I book the night before to ensure I have a room when I arrive.||Asides from these issues, I don't want to fail to recognize some of the staff during my recent stay who makes the stay really pleasurable despite the really poor product: Temitope at the Front Desk is probably the most service oriented team member and others at the front desk should just follow her exemplary service standards, great follow up and ensures that issues are handled adequately. |Matheus at the Club Lounge is really great, super friendly, always remembers preference and while the breakfast selection at the Lounge is smaller, I prefer to be there for the friendly service and the Nespresso coffee there. Loved the acai for breakfast!|Eric from the Housekeeping team who helped to find my missing water bottle I left in the sauna which despite many attempts of asking other staff at the reception/spa which didn't help, he was the one that had logged it with security and actually managed to retrieve it.

This must be the worst hotel I have stayed in under the marriott brand. And this is definitely not a 5 star luxury hotel - not by any standards. Maybe 2 star! . We only got to check in after waiting for 3 hours!!!! and as a matter of fact, i was not even able to check in at the official check in time!! I constantly cheked with the front desk and they cannot even say when our room will be available. Terrible service. The rooms are very old as if everything is about to break down. One of the elevators was broken and the 2 others were very slow. The electricity even went out for a moment and suddenly it took 2 hours for the airconditioning to cool down the room. The rooms are of a one star hotel quality-- if you do not want to believe me - look at the photos I took. The view is non existent -- all you see are the windows of the other rooms!! I guess the only positive thing is that it is located across the Copacabana Beach -- which is also way over rated. So so surprised how this hotel is even a marriott. they said they renovated -- the only ting they renovated was the carpet in the corridors. Stay away from this hotel.

Google
The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the location is amazing, but the staff is what really sets this place apart from the rest! From the moment I arrived and walked through the lobby I was greeted and assisted with my bags, well taken care of and felt the warm welcome of Rio. Special thank you to Daniel at the front desk, he was so helpful, so pleasant, always gave me a warm smile, and provided great service. Thank you JW Marriott Team!

Yelp
Great accommodations in the perfect location. I loved being right across from the boardwalk and beach. The service from all of the staff was great; we even got a microwave delivered to our room late one night. We used all the amenities and I absolutely loved the rooftop pool and gym. Lastly the daily breakfast was top tier! All the produce tasted perfect (I don't think I've ever seen avocados that large) and the breakfast meats and made to order eggs were fresh. I'd recommend this location to anyone traveling to Rio/Copacabana!

Yelp
I recently traveled solo to Rio de Janeiro, and stayed at JW Marriott. My main takeaway is where this hotel lacks in modern, aesthetic amenities and updates in comparison to the Hilton and others, it made up for it more than 5x over with excellent customer service, comfortable/clean rooms, and great onsite restaurant. As a Bonvoy Gold Elite member I received early check in, late check out, and room upgrade to the 15th floor overlooking the illustrious Copacabana. The hotel met my needs well and the staff went above and beyond for me, even assisting with getting around and selecting the right options during booking an excursion. I had compared JW to the Sheraton in Leblon but ultimately made a final decision based on location. Special thanks to Fernando, Julio, and the entire Carioca restaurant staff. Tip: There's no a full length mirror in some rooms, just be prepared to check yourself out in the elevator mirrors instead ;)

Yelp
As a Marriott Lifetime Platinum Elite y can attest that Everything here works as it should be. Great beach location. Rooms are comfortable, although a bit dated but all works and bed is very comfortable. A/C works as it should (cold). Breakfast buffet is fresh; with both American and Brazilian items. Staff is superbly friendly and attentive (Nicoly, Jared and Lorraine). The Spa although very small has an awesome Therapist in Vanessa (one of best massages ever) and Monica will coordinate your spa. The front Desk is very professional (Matheus). Doorman are extremely helpful as well. This JW Marriott is heads and shoulder over the last 3 Ritz Carlton's we have stayed. Awesome Team!!

Yelp
This 5- star hotel right across from Copacabana beach really lived up to its standards and did not fail to impress us. we had read some mixed reviews before, but we wanted to stay in Copacabana and we are Marriott loyal customers so we decided to stay there anyway. and I must say, our experience was fabulous. During breakfast, they make sure your oatmeal s cooked to perfection the way you want, they will make sure they have really satisfied the custome. The location cant get any better, they have their chairs and umbrellas at the beach so you don't have to rent it from a street vendor. The friendly staff is there at your service making sure you got what you wanted, when you wanted and the way you wanted. Rooftop warm water pool is perfect for relaxation and the deck gives you a wonderful view of the ocean. We had a memorable stay in Rio De Janeiro for 4 nights.

Yelp
JW Marriott This is a book it's hard to not say great things about this place because it was a perfect location. Right across the street from Copacabana beach. The beds were great and so are the shower but the people really made this trip so fun. I think it's one of the top three of my favorite JW Marriott I stayed at. Here is to my new friends; Felipe, Arthur, Rennan, Wagner, Silva, (Terraneo restaurant-she's going to do theJoáo). Moonlounge-Food Truck(rooftop) The Carioca (Lobby Bar) Sauna and pool on the rooftop Executive Lounge; George, Carol, Michel (some of my favorite people at the hotel) The views from the Moon lounge were incredible! This lounge is on the rooftop at the JW Marriott in Rio. Quite surprised to see that they have a food truck, swimming pool, spa the lounge with killer views. I couldn't believe the size of the passion fruit so of course I had to have a CaipirinhaIt.I WOULD go back and say hello to all, We really enjoyed our stay there.

Yelp
This hotel was very nice to stay at location wise and the breakfast was excellent. I cannot give 5 stars as checkin was very frustrating snd rooms were not ready, the place lost air 2 times and it got so hot and humid it was miserable, and restaurant food options were not great, and the laundry was so expensive. Other JW's were way nicer than this one in my opinion.

Yelp
The location and staff make up for a lot of the room shortcomings. We loved the beach area dedicated to the hotel located directly across the street. They even run hoses from the boards walk to the seating area so you don't burn your feet walking in the sand. Beautiful touch. The hotel itself, much like myself, is starting to show its age. Rooms feel a bit dated and reminded us more of an airport Marriott than a JW on Copacabana beach. Some electrical outlets didn't work in our room, bedsheets had a hole in them, and when I needed an iron we went through 3 before getting one that worked(water actually poured out of the electrical cord on the first one...yikes). Granted we didn't pay for an ocean view room but the courtyard view is really just like looking at another building. There's nothing courtyard or atrium about it. The upstairs bar sported nice views but other than that was very lack luster. Bright spots in the room were comfy bed and pillows, ample mini bar, good water pressure and nice heavy towels. After landing at 615am and arriving shortly after, the super early check-in we got was MUCH appreciated (but that comes with Marriott status and availability).

Yelp
Would absolutely stay here again the next time I get to visit Rio! The staff was extraordinary and welcomed my wife and I as if it were home. Gui and Allan were phenomenal hosts and provided excellent recommendations for food (La Chiquita nearby), Samba (Carioca da Gema), and places to visit in/out of town (tours with Gray Line, etc.). The gentlemen even went out of there way to reach out to our Pousada in Paraty to ensure all of our accommodations and trips were in order for the following week. The room, club lounge, and amenities were what you would expect from a JW- clean, well-maintained, and without concern. Every member of the staff spoke English, Spanish, and Portuguese, so communicating was never an issue. The location right on Copacabana beach is perfect. Yet at these venues, it's the personal service that brings you back!

Yelp
For those Marriott purists like myself, there is very limited options in Rio, and only 1 option on Copacabana (I'll probably end up trying the Sheraton on Ipanama next time but the JW is more centrally located). 30 min ride from the airport is pretty quick, as well as 10-20 min to most key destination. Also plenty of good dining options nearby. The JW itself is nothing to write home about - the lobby is decent, though doesn't feel 5-star or luxury as you'll see in asian resorts or the newer nicer US ones. Plenty of seating (though not super comfortable) and a small bar. There's a small check-in area with friendly and informative staff - check-in was quick and painless like how you expect. The concierge was one of the highlights, very informative, patient, and will help you book attractions and reserve restaurants. Definitely talk to him before you go anywhere. We had a room right below the club lounge facing the ocean. The room itself was ok size, not tiny but can be more spacious for longer stays. The one small chair doesn't really do it for furniture. Tiny TV (though there was a decent amount of English channels so that's a plus. Bathroom is ok size, can be a bit bigger and more luxurious. The oceanview is great though, definitely want one of those if you can get it. Sweeping views of the beach (that has people in it at all hours). The Rooftop gym is super nice and empty, definitely recommend checking it out. The views up top are great, though the windows make it difficult for a good picture. Small bar and food truck (Seriously, how did that get up there) to provide drinks and food for those staying a while. There are a few comfortable cabanas for relaxing. The pool itself is nothing great to speak of, it's heated but off to the side so you really don't have a view of anything. The Hyatt seems amazing at the end of Copacabana, will definitely want to try that in the future some day.

Beautiful hotel in a great location. The people at the front desk were great and very helpful. Definitely recommend beach view!

Yelp
According to Rio's standards this hotel is a five-star hotel. I've been to other Marriott hotels that are definitely five star hotels this is not a 5-star hotel but it is definitely one of the better hotels that they do have in Rio according to what I've seen. The staff all speak English very well & that's a plus because the language barrier is something else. Rooms were basic and very small. I was suppose to have a mountain view and I was so tired from the flight that I didn't bother asking for a different room. I figured i wouldn't be in the room much anyway. It was clean and comfortable enough. The rooftop pool & bar is a wonderful view 9f copacabana beach. Drinks were NY priced but strong and on our last evening after a relaxing massage at the spa and a quick shower we sat out there lounging in the shade sipping some drinks until it was ready to leave to the airport. The airline staff were relaxing up there after a lung flight as well. Saturday night there is a party up there and ppl come from all over to hang out. The bartenders were cool and informative (Yousef) & all the staff were very helpful. This hotel is in a really good location. Close to the beach and within walking distance to many shops. Oh and on the beach they provide umbrellas and chairs & towels. They set it all up for you as well.

Yelp
I hopefully will have a better review after they get my room situation right. Booked this hotel weeks ago and after I checked in and went to the room the following happened: 1. Room was still being cleaned 2. Gave me a room that I didn't pay for(downgrade) 3 Didn't tell me about the room change until I came back down to the desk and they said they were overbooked. I didn't want to wait around so I asked them to fix the problem and I would be at the beach and we could chat via the app. Well it's not 4:03pm and the room that I booked is still not ready. Not to sound stuck up but I'm traveling with two teen daughters and having the 1.5 bathrooms that this hotel offers would be great and why I was willing to pay close to 500 a night. So you can see why I'm annoyed about not getting the room I reserved and paid for. Keep in mind they charged my credit card at check in knowing they weren't giving me the room I reserved. I will take this up with Marriott and include this review on viator and TripAdvisor. I don't care about the ocean view, I understand that they thought I would appreciate that but if you've had to share 1 bathroom between 3 women. you could understand my pain. Update --------at 6:15pm Finally got the room I paid for and reserved. After expressing my concerns on chat with them the supervisor came to personally apologize. I understand things happen but for the nightly rate of this hotel and the way the first representative tried to handle the situation I'm sure is not how the JW wants to be represented. She gave us multiple options to resolve the issues (compensation) I just selected one for the discounted room rate. Honestly, I was just super annoyed at not being able to relax and shower. I didn't know the room issue would be hours so we didn't want to use the temporary room that they tried to put us in. More work for housekeeping and also we really didn't know it would be hours later until our room was going to be available (3 hours past regular check in time, 9 hours past our early check in time) Overall, the experience checking in and getting the room we paid for was crap but the room and the club experience is worth the money.

Yelp
It's time for an upgrade! Best location you can get, and certainly great views if you have an ocean front room. The pillows are also great and the one reason I always choose a JW Marriott. There's also a really lovely pool on the rooftop. Other than that the place is tired and in desperate need of some love. Although the room photos on the website are completely accurate, you can't see how absolutely tiny the room is. On top of that everything is outdated besides maybe the Nespresso machine that was likely added recently. The hallways have a funny smell to them and the 9th floor has an even more distinct smell like some sort of cheap perfume (I ignored it the first, but it was recurring). If you have a chance to stop by the executive lounge, the food is quite good and the service is very friendly. Be aware of the meal times because they don't leave a speck of food out a second after the meal is over. You also have to ask for flat bottled water which can be a bit annoying since they have multiple fridges frilled with sparkling water. And as you could image by the guest rooms, the lounge is very tiny as well.

Yelp
JW Marriott @ Avenida Atlantica is in need of some TLC We had to pay extra for an early check in & late check out .... and this is what we found inside an oceanfront room QC at its best huh???? Room # 1618
google avatar

Bruce S.

Yelp
We stayed here for 10 nights and it was very enjoyable. It's located on Av. Atlantica right across from Copacabana Beach and we had an ocean facing room. Our room was not overly large, but big enough. It had a safe, mini fridge and wi-fi. There is a pool on the roof and the view from up there is fantastic! The pool isn't large, but there were never many people up there anyway. Why use the pool when one of the worlds most famous beaches is across the street? The hotel has a section of beach with lounge chairs and towels for guest use. There are always cabs outside the entrance and we didn't rent a car. This is one of the nicer places we have stayed. Just what we expect from a Marriott .We ate breakfast every morning in the restaurant as part of the package we bought and it was great. The rest of our meals were eaten out and there are a number of restaurants in the area. The staff earned a full 5 stars and most of them speak English. My Wife speaks Portuguese so we had no problems here or anywhere else in Brazil. We will probably stay here again even though it is a little pricey.

Yelp
The best! We loved every moment of it! Super friendly staff, great facilities, right across from the beach! Will 100% return! Home away from home!

Matthew A.

Yelp
Rooms a little less modern, but the staff and friendly environment was great. I didn't speak Portuguese, but about half the staff spoke English too so it worked out great. Beach is across the street. Breakfast was included and amazing. My girlfriend had a great time as well!

Yelp
This hotel is (arguably) the best hotel in Rio. The staff is super friendly (several speak English) and the rooms are comfortable. This hotel is directly across the street from the historic Copacabana Beach and they provide complimentary beach chairs/towels/umbrellas (which was a HUGE win). The hotel also has a great rooftop pool and a great bar. The hotel is also in walking distance to a ton of restaurants. Also a 10-15 min can ride away from all the tourist attractions and downtown Rio. The hotel also has a great breakfast buffet, that includes omelettes (made to order). They also provide a complimentary happy hour (small plates, beer and wine) for the guest between 5pm - 6:30pm. I definitely recommend this hotel. I would not stay anywhere else and will stay here on my next visit to Rio!

Yelp
Our room was nice and clean, but a little on the small side. Our king sized bed was very comfortable, with feather pillows and blankets. The bathtub is full size in length, however the width is half the size of a regular tub, felt cramped. There is also an in room safe, coffee machine and mini bar. Wifi is free in the lobby but if you want it in your room, you have to pay BRL $35 plus 10% service charge for a day. Or there's a 3 day package for BRL $88 plus 10% service fee. Breakfast is also not included which is a shame since we paid $329 a night. Beach chairs, umbrellas and towels are provided free of charge on the beach directly ahead of the Marriott. There is also a small pool, bar and fitness center on the rooftop which overlooks Copacabana Beach. If you need transportation to the airport, the Marriott contracts personal drivers a private car for BRL $125 one way. Hotel is nice but we wished we got more for our money. Definitely not up to the high standards of a JW Marriott.

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel for the beginning of the World Cup and the FanFest. Absolutely loved this hotel. Great view of Copacabana, great food, the service was amazing!!! Livia the hospitality manager and Albert the bartender we great at their jobs and made the whole experiment worth the expense of traveling to Rio. This hotel is definitely one of the most expensive in the beach, but it's clean, updated, the service is great. The only thing is that the wifi is very expensive so had to use the wifi in the lobby for most of our trip. That was the only drawback, but it kept us out of our rooms and got us to socialize. Met a lot of interesting people from all over the world.

Robert M.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed the extreme good fortune to stay at the five star JW Marriott Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro from November 28 until December 1. From the check in, the experience was superb. Elvira, the front desk professional, epitomized customer service. The staff recognized us and called us by name whether it was lobby or dining and very solicitous of how they could help us. They made our stay a delight and we are very happy to recommend the JW Marriott Copacabana Beach for your next date in Rio.

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel for four nights in October 2013. I had no major complaints, but I don't think this hotel lives up to a "JW" Marriott ( in case you're unaware, the "JW" monicker indicates Marriott's top end properties). The desk staff was professional and helpful. However, various aspects - decor, housekeeping, and quality/upkeep of furnishings -- fall short of "JW" properties. A couple examples: the carpeting in my room was a bit shabby/dirty, and the housing keeping staff failed to completely restock my bathroom everyday I was there (missing a towel, soap, etc). On a positive note, this hotel seems nicer (perhaps even much nicer) than a couple other similarly-priced hotels in Rio. The roof deck also provides great views (I posted a photo). On another positive note, the included breakfast was very good and included a lot of variety.

Glen F.

Yelp
Stayed week of May 30 with wife and another couple. The hotel is nice but could use some updating. The staff was wonderful throughout the hotel. Mattheu in the Exec. Lounge was great. The entire staff in restaurant and front desk went out of their way to help us every day. As a Titanium member for life, I was treated to an upgraded room and benefits. The hotel even arranged for us to wait in the lounge after check-out as our plane left later in the evening. The location of the hotel is right next to the Copacabana beach and all the entertainment that goes with it. Everything we needed was within walking distance....great restaurants and shopping. We'll be back again.

Yelp
After a terrible experience with immigration, being ripped off by a taxi driver who charged us US $89 for a US$12 drive and stole my suitcase, we arrive at the JW Marriott seeking solace. What did we find? Check in was at 3:00 pm and I understand that they could not allow us to check in early. What I would have never suspected is that at the time I'm writing this (4:30pm) they still have not given us our room. People around me have traveled long hours and still haven't been able to check in. The hotel manager (Mariela) came down and said she was going to check in with housekeeping. UPDATE: On a brighter note, Mariela was kind enough to offer us free WiFi and breakfast, as well as a late check out. The room, once ready, was very comfortable with a great view.

Yelp
Plus: (1) hotel nicely located, with English speaking staff and a certain type do comfort ; (2) I liked the staff come in the evening to refresh your room before the night! Minus: (1) pretty expensive (I paid two nights with points and it ended up being the equivalent of ~400$ / night without including breakfast), (2) feels a little old (it might need a refresh soon), (3) there is only one restaurant in the hotel, (4) the room service was a bit disappointing though not completely a disaster (we order club sandwich with fries and a tomato soup); (5) drinks on the rooftop were a ripoff compared to what you can get on Copacabana Overall, it's an ok hotel, probably does not compete with nice Airbnb apartment which we will do next time we go to Rio. Good for business travelers or aficionados of JW Marriott.

Yelp
Needs a facelift. Being on the ocean and only seeing an atrium is depressing. I woke up put on suit and got ready for beach but walked outside to rain. Rooms are dark and dreary. The Windsor next door is amazing and great clean rooms!

Yelp
We wanted a drink and my husband wanted to earn a few Marriott points. We tried Cerpa beer and it was not that great. No fault of anyone but our tastebuds. The bartender was friendly and spoke decent English. It was quite a nice surprise for us while in Rio. I wish we could of stayed here but it's quite expensive. It has super easy access to the beach which is a bonus

Yelp
I had a lovely time at the Marriott the staff was so friendly and everything was clean and welcoming. It's conveniently located across from the beach and the services are just never ending. They are helpful in giving information about how to get around the city. The rooftop view, food, and staff is great. And the view from my Room was absolutely gorgeous. You can ask them anything we even got them to make a reservation for us because we were having a language barrier.

Yelp
Fantastic experience. My wife and I spent five nights here in May. I've stayed at many hotels in my life for leisure and work. Mandarin and Four Seasons are two of my favorites. Even though the JW Marriott is in a different price range than those two hotels, we received comparable service. There are several reasons why our stay at this JW Marriott was exceptional. The view: We opted for an ocean view room. I recommend you do the same. The interior rooms' windows face a courtyard so they're dark. That might be a good thing for you if you like to sleep in or if you know you won't be spending much time in your room. However, my wife and I wanted a room with a view because that's why we're staying on the beach in Copacabana Even if we only glanced out of the window for a few minutes each day, it was worth it. The windows are large so they provide sweeping landscape views of the ocean's horizon. The sunset was on the other side of the building. But the sun rose to the left. I woke up each morning to watch it. We happened to staying there during a full moon, which rose directly in our view. It was spectacular to watch. The service: Even before arrival, the staff asked us about our needs to have everything ready upon our arrival. We arrived 4 hours early and they accommodated us without hesitation. The staff were friendly, happy, and enthusiastic. Most of them speak English, which didn't matter for us because we both speak varying levels of Portuguese. Upon our departure, we asked if we could store our luggage somewhere because we had a very late flight. We were going to explore a little more. They went above and beyond by securing a another room for us after we had already checked out, which allows us to relax, shower, and nap before our departure. Eight hours of walking and loitering would have been exhausting. They didn't charge us for the room. The food: The food was surprisingly good. After spending two weeks exploring various parts of Brazil, my wife and I had experience a wide variety of food. And the food at the JW Marriott was just as good if not better than some of the best restaurants in Brazil. To give you an idea of what I'm comparing the food to, here's a list of the restaurants we ate at: Zuka, Aprazivel, and Porcao. The chef at JW is exceptional. He could easily be working at any of the above restaurants. One of the more memorable dining experience my wife and I had was on the roof where the Chef was grilling one afternoon. We hadn't planned to eat on the roof or even at the hotel that afternoon, but we're happy we did. My wife had the pork chops with a butter lemon sauce. They were delicious and perfectly cooked. I had the grilled chicken with an oil pepper sauce. Also perfect. He prepared a few sides including a banana-based Farofa, grilled potatoes, and a variety of legumes. It was one of the best meals we had in our entire three weeks in Brazil. On another occasion, Fabio, a waiter at the restaurant on the second floor provided exceptional service. He was attentive, friendly, and anticipative. The amenities: The rooftop was a nice surprise. We didn't expect to spend so much time at the hotel. But the rooftop was so pleasant that we went up there each day to take a swim in the heated pool and to use the sauna and shower.

Yelp
**This review is re: customer service provided by Marriott management and concierge re: tour booked directly with hotel. I will update review to include hotel stay portion upon check-out** BEWARE Rio Line Turismo. And shame on JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro for actively promoting their Rio Express tour. Yes, JW Marriott guests receive a printout advertising this specific tour in welcome packet upon check-in (see first photo). Our 5-hour tour turned into a 12-hour tour on Jan 2. We started tour with 22 adults/4 kids and ended up with only 6 adults by end. The day began with an 8:45AM hotel pickup in a Rio Line tour bus with broken air conditioner. Our tour guide, Patricia, did not coordinate efficiently with bus driver (for example, when we are all ready to get back on bus to go to next stop, the Rio Line bus is not even in parking lot). You are really paying for a chauffeur and not an actual tour guide. It was so bad that people started to complain during the second stop (city tour) when Patricia simply told us to meet her at designated time and everyone had to figure out where the Escadaria Selarón was located (HINT: just follow the crowds down one of the alleys). A few passengers also complained that our tour guide didn't really speak either English or Spanish. Somehow this didn't stop Patricia from arguing with half a dozen passengers on bus. Sure, with such a large group, it is expected that the entire tour may run late but no one expected to arrive at Corcovado Mountain ticket booth (our last stop) at 1pm and be told by Patricia that the next tour up to Christ the Redeemer would be at 5pm (or we could go tomorrow at 9am). What???? We either have to wait 4 hours or go tomorrow? I reached out directly to Marriott supervisor (Elvira) and then concierge (Carmen) by phone while still on the tour to explain situation but no help from them!!! Elvira said she would contact Rio Line and call me back. I was simply told she went home for the day when I called hotel again. Carmen spoke with Rio Line Turismo directly who did not take responsibility for all the problems on this tour and no further help from her either to try to make this situation right. Marriott concierge told us that there is a NO SHOW fee for this tour but tour company didn't even buy individual admission tickets in advance or follow a pre-planned itinerary so then why do you even have a NO SHOW fee? JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro - I was really hoping you would make this right but I am disappointed overall with customer service from Elvira and Carmen. please listen to your customers (and stop promoting this tour)!!!! HOTEL GUESTS - don't waste your time on this tour! It was ridiculous after ridiculous.....

Yelp
We didn't stay at the hotel but where there for Christmas dinner. The service was top notch, especially compared to the service we've experienced so far in Rio which was very none existence. I think he was the manager for the Christmas dinner, he and his staff worked hard to make sure we enjoyed our evening. We travel with a older gentleman that did not enjoy listening to music while we ate so the managed to replace us. They really made our Christmas in Rio magnificent!

Yelp
This is undoubtedly my favorite Marriott. I've stayed at many (I've stayed here twice). I trully wish I could give this 5 stars. Hotel is in a GREAT location right in the center of the beach of Copacabana. The Concierge lounge is one of my favorites with a great view of the beach, well staffed and very friendly & courteous staff. The Hotel is well kept and definitely the nicest around. The downside is the size of the rooms and price (around 1k a night). I was hoping my gold status would upgrade me to a decent size room, but no luck. I'll be back if I ever make it back to town. Great hotel in a great location!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing staff and service. Even when I had to move hotels, due to business reasons, they still accommodated me for their hotel access weeks later. The staff is friendlier than any other hotel I've stayed at. It's not limited to the restaurant, or the reception area - it's every single person. They will do anything to help make your stay pleasant. If I come back to Rio, I am coming straight here. Also, the hotel is spotless, clean, and in great condition. Everything you'd expect it to be and more. Best hotel on Copacabana, by far.

Yelp
The Marriott is our home away from home when traveling to Rio for business as often as my coworkers and I do. Overnight flights seem less painful when you arrive to such a friendly front desk team that calls you by name and goes above and beyond to ensure your stay includes unmatched service and genuine personal recommendations for restaurants or other places around town. Amanda and Tamara at the front desk always take care of us and seem to always have a solution for the unexpected issues that inevitably unfold during a business trip. Superior service to all other places on Copa Cabana, period. Guaranteed to include Youseff's warm hospitality in the lobby bar and his expertly crafted drinks which are a must have after a long day!

Yelp
The hotel is very well located however most of the rooms look at the interior of the building, bit uncomfortable as there is no privacy. The rest is Ok, restaurant service, and at the front desk they are super nice people.

Yelp
"This Is The "Go To" Place in Rio de Janeiro!!!!" Reviewed yesterday NEW This is one of these rare occasions that I wish that I could give this hotel ten stars or ten circles. I have decades of living in 5-star hotels all over the world. I fell in love with the movie Lost In Translation. It depicted the life of an American business man at a luxury hotel in Tokyo. Let's face it, most of these venues have wonderful rooms and everything works right. But, let us say that they are also cold, stuffy and pretentious. The J.W. Marriott is "a class act" with beautiful rooms, superb restaurants, great housekeeping and support staff, etc. It has something else that I love about Rio de Janeiro-an incredible warmth and friendliness. From the moment that I walked into the hotel, I was warmly greeted and made to feel "at home." Amanda, the young lady who checked me in, was an English-speaking Carioca. She was friendly and competent. She made me feel like I was a very important person. This was the way that it continued to be during my 4-day visit. Every time I had a question or a need, it was promptly attended to. I felt like I was in a warm and a friendly family-owned establishment. One morning I dropped my glasses while in the lobby. I was facing a loss of several hundred dollars because the glasses were expensive. I went to Amanda and they were sitting right on her desk. Internet was excellent. Cable television was excellent. Climate control in the room was excellent. I looked out my window and had stunning views of Copacabana Beach and Guanabara Bay. The breakfast is not the usual hotel breakfast. It is full of all sorts of fruits and vegetables that make it super-healthy. One could eat a great breakfast and not be hungry for the rest of the day. The Margaritas were world class. I was so sad when I had to check out to fly back to my daughter in Sao Paulo. Room Tip: Get one with a view of Copacabana Beach!

Yelp
The best thing of this hotel is its location. It's situated right in the middle of Copacabana beach. As for the rest, let me tell you all step by step... We stayed at this hotel back in the 2008 and it was much fresher, if I can say so. Now it's a bit beat-up and shabby, especially this goes for the linens and towels particularly. Even when changed - they smell like a foul waste. That's unpleasant. We've got an ocean view room. Reasonably spacious and bright. Some weird noise woke us up at the crack of dawn. It seemed like it was because of the sun was shining into the window and may be because of the pressure and temperature difference the window frame was not fit right and this annoying noise going from the window side from time to time like some rocks were falling just didn't give us enough of good sleep after all. We asked to change the room. They willingly transferred us to another one, where was the same story, but quieter a bit at least. They have ocean view rooms or inner court view. May be there is no such story at the inner looking rooms, but believe me - when the room is overlooking somewhere where there is no real day or night light - inside the building - it's not very impressive and alive, it's more artificial and depressing. They do turndown service which is always good, including traditional chocolate candies. Breakfast you can order in the room, which is for a decent price by the way, or enjoy it at their restaurant. In-room dining is of a very high quality by the way. We came late from a show and ordered dinner: they offer filet mignon in a late night menu, which is honorable! It was cooked rare as we asked and with delicious mushroom risotto. Their Burger was juicy and succulent. And cauliflower au gratin was delicious and impeccable too. So here I give them my highest evaluation. Gym is on the rooftop and has a spectacular view. Sometimes I guess it's better to go to the gym with such a beautiful panorama and air conditioner, than jog along the beach. Although it can be a nice jog, but when it's over 90 F outside you'll think twice. There are a couple of bicycles, two elliptical machines, few treadmills, and strength machines for almost every muscle group, free weights too. Life Fitness. Not to mention that when drinking water from the cooler we saw a cockroach sneaking by the apples. Outside pool is right there too, very small though. They have sunbeds there, showers, dry sauna and changing rooms. SPA, if you're interested. We didn't use their services this time, remembering our experience back in the 2008. When my massage therapist offered me a deeper massage in a special place, if you know what I mean, this is absolutely inappropriate for such kind of establishment. But it's Rio... They have beach service: sunbeds and towels, closes at 5pm. As for late check-out - it was a whole fight here. We had a late flight and being Elite Marriott rewards members - we're entitled for a late check out upon availability. They told us that there was no such availability. We checked on-line and saw plenty of rooms available for booking. Which we told them and the answer was that the category we were in was sold out. I asked to transfer us to a different category which was not sold out and the receptionist mumbled something doubtful that it was not possible. So we bargained it until 2 pm at least and they were completely not happy. What else can I say? We would have stayed at Belmond Copacabana Palace, but it was all booked by the Rolling Stones and their crew which was the reason of our visit this time, by the way.

Yelp
This is one of those hotels that makes you scratch your head. It's not particular cheap. The rooms smell in varying degrees of mildew and cleaning products. The service ranges from ignoring guests at arrival to making endless empty gestures if you complain. For instance, this last trip I was sent flowers when I arrived by a Brazilian friend. They arrived as I was leaving for dinner so I asked the front desk if they could put them in a vase and send them to my room. Hours later I came back to find that they had just thrown them on the bed. Half dead I called down to ask for a vase. Half an hour later they sent up an ice bucket. When I showed them that I need a vase not an ice bucket, they asked if I wanted ice. I said never mind, annoyed. Half an hour later, someone knocks with a small vase with dirty water in it. They had pulled out whatever was in it out and just brought it without cleaning or rinsing or even emptying it. But more annoying, I got calls for two days asking if everything was alright. This is supposedly a superior hotel and they have difficulty putting flowers in a vase and then they think two days of calls is OK? In addition, the door to my room was broken and that took 45 mins to fix after I had waited seven hours to check in after a ten hour flight. The beds feel like college dorm futons and none of the windows open. On the upper floors, you hear the thumping music of a disco late into the night. I decided to stay here this trip because my reservation hadn't come through at my favorite Rio hotel, the Cesar Park. Not a smart move on my part. This will definitely be the last time I stay here. A big mess that should be missed.

Yelp
We had a wonderful stay here and would definitely do so again. We are hardcore Marriott fans, but the facilities and staff here in Rio have surpassed our expectations. The rooms are nice, clean. Not huge, but you can move around comfortably. Minibar fridge and safe in the room. All the amenities are available ... Nothing is cheap, but you're in a nice hotel in Rio so it is to be expected. I can't say enough about the attitudes and service of the staff here. We were greeted in a friendly and welcoming way by every staff member whom we met ... If you caught their eye, no matter how dressed or how early or late, you would get a friendly greeting, in Portuguese, English, Spanish or German. I had a chance to converse with some of the staff, both in English and in my bizarre Portuguese/Spanish/English polyglot mashup. Everyone on staff speaks some English and some speak so well that you would not think they were Brazilian. The concierge staff are the best! They work as a team, and they love what they do and they love to help you. I received help from four of the five, and they were all outstanding, but I have to give a special note of thanks to Ramon, for all his help and conversation. He is the epitome, the quintessential example of why we stay at a Marriott property when we travel. Ramon was great to us, but as I watched I saw that it was not just me, but everyone who came to the desk for help received 100% of his attention and knowledgeable help. He truly loves to help people enjoy Rio and the hotel. Afonso, Carmen ... all the desk staff are the same and we felt pampered throughout our vacation. Also special thanks to Fabiano, the I.T. expert who came to our room and swapped out our dying access point (instead of assuming that the problem was with the user). The hotel is right across Av. Atlantica from the beach and you can get all you need for the beach from the hotel. If you book a deal with your flight (e.g. We got a great price on Travelocity) be sure to let them know if you are a Marriott Rewards member -- they will waive the Internet fees. The concierge floor offers a sumptuous breakfast buffet every day and a lovely happy hour with adult beverages and hot and cold hors d'ouvres said well as something prepared to order. Watching the sunrise over Copacabana over breakfast and sunset over an evening snack (or dinner if you want -- they will feed you and refill your glass until you leave or closing time). No self-serve nasty nachos here... Fresh local cuisine, some made to order, each night. Excellent fitness room, outdoor pool on the roof -- if you would rather lounge by the pool and sip caipirinhas instead of going to the beach, you can, with lovely views of the beauty of Rio surrounding you.

Yelp
This is a decent hotel, with a decent location, and it did have a really good breakfast, but for the price and based on my other stays at JW Marriotts I wasn't overly pleased with value for money, it just didn't live up to what I would expect from a JW Marriott, I would say standards wise it's somewhere between a Courtyard and Marriott. I just don't think I would stay here again.

Yelp
I stayed here for a month on business trip and it's really a fantastic hotel. Had a huge room with great view of the beach. Room was really nice, bed was large and extremely comfortable, no issues with quality. I had access to executive lounge and could eat breakfast and dinner there with the huge windows overlooking the beach as this is right Copacabana. Fantastic roof top with gym, outdoor pool and dining area, great place to hang out, views of Sugar Loaf and Cristo Redentor. Staff is really helpful, though I requested no turndown service but every night they'd knock on the door. I am not a fan of turndown service, I know there's huge fans of it, I'm baffled by its appeal, but that's minor issue. Real close to metro station, so easy to get to customer site, Rio has such powerful energy, this hotel's right in the middle of it, I'd recommend it if you're coming here for work or fun.

Yelp
I have been staying at the JW regularly for about two months now. For the most part I really enjoy it. Most of the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. There was an issue last night with my room service order and Chef Thomaz Leao not only made everything right he made everything EXCELLENT! When he brought my meal back himself the steak was cooked to perfection! Melt in your mouth comes to mind! I wanted to call him right away to tell him but the food was so amazing that I couldn't put my fork and knife down until the last morsel of steak was lovingly consumed. Then I got a wonderful surprise when he arrived at my door again with the most delicious dessert ever. I love good food and this meal exceeded my expectations. Best Chef ever! Thank you Chef Thomaz Leao!!! I would give this meal 10 STARS!

Yelp
The Hotel JW Marriott, Rio de Janeiro need to maintenances. Build in 2001, need a lot clean up. Bathroom with mold, nine floor bad smell. Carpets old with funny smell. Humid at some rooms, that make some kind smell not pleasant. Couch at living room are very old and smell.. No, no. For $300. a night.. Should be in better shape. They view is nice, of course the view is throw a glass window. A cross to the beach. The personal is very nice, good manners, need more people speak English. Sorry, but I move from one room to another because, dirty, smell or noise to loud.. I know well marriot hotel, I has been see better that this.. I'm disappoint w rooms.. And old furniture.. Please!!

Yelp
The hotel has a huge construction site next door. There is construction noise in all public areas, from pool to restaurants. Even in the room you get noise. The hotel should publicly inform about this, or reconsider lower rates and add perks for customers that are surprised by this situation. instead when you arrive at the check in, the hotel just try to charge you more for everything: internet, breakfast, etc Even worst , if you complain, you are at risk of be rewarded with the worst room in the hotel. It is a shame that a company as Marriot, is not more careful handling these kind of problems.

Yelp
If you are here looking for a hotel in Rio then look no more! I am a frequent traveller (40 weeks/year) and I stay in hotels all around the world! This hotel is best in all categories! Service (10 out of 5 stars) The service is impeccable! The staff here only has ONE mission and that is to do everything possible to help you! Check-in was organized and quick. Renato was running the front desk like a perfect machine! The in flux of people at check in did not phase him. Everyone speaks perfect English and for a second I forgot I was in another country! Bellman (Tony) was doing everything possible to get us to the room so we can start enjoying Rio. When my room was not ready, they gave me another room and moved me when the other room (with view) was ready. The concierge lounge staff (Diego and team) made me feel like I was at a bar where everyone was my friend! He brought other guest together and through him we made friends with so many people! He also gave unfiltered advice on things to do base on my interest! The food was also good in the lounge. The was a variety of options so when something I didn't like was served it was no issue! Then there is the Concierge Team lead by Rosane! If there is an award for Concierges then she is the top contender! She spent an hour with us getting to know what we like and helped us plan out our 4 day itinerary. Every place we went knew here and provide us service like no other. Being on vacation we did not stick to the itinerary and she adjusted as needed! It was my birthday and Carmen and Aline decorated the room like I have never seen! They even sought me out to make sure everything was pleasant and through the whole trip they were there and answered questions before I could ask! Carmen, Aline and Ramon also worked the late shifts so when we came in from dinner or parties! They made sure we were OK, had water and was good for the night! I could go on but you get the point! The service on every level is amazing! Location (5/5 stars) It's is on the beach! The view from the lounge and rooms make for great people watching and scenic views! The mall is very close and shopping is 1 block away. The provide beach service also. There are places to eat from 2-4 stars all with walking distance! Rooms/Facilities (4.5/5 stars) The are good! Typical JW quality (which is a positive thing). You can see the age in some of the common area furniture. The gym is on the small side but has everything that is required. Rooftop pool is picturesque and perfect! *side note* every drink I had here was STRONG

Yelp
Beautiful hotel with an amazing view from the beach. The service is a little suspect for the darker of complexion though. I will come again, but maybe not to this hotel.

Yelp
BEWARE before booking your stay here, this hotel will charge you an additional 11.3 percent of your US dollar booked rate. We booked our room in the US at a rate of $231 per night and the USD/Brazil exchange rate during our stay was about 4 BRL per dollar. Here is where the hotel gets sneaky, at checkout, the hotel converted our USD rate by 4.45 which meant we were charged 1,028 BRL instead of 924 BRL. Of course our credit card will charge us the actual exchange rate of 4 BRZ/dollar which means we just paid $258 (1,028 / 4) an 11.3 percent premium. I don't like deceptive pricing and this is a clear example of hidden fees. Nevertheless, I still give this Marriott 2 stars: one for location and the second for service. First off, the internet connection absolutely stinks and you have to get a new code every day. Basic text-only website like Wikipedia take up to 5 minutes to load and forget about checking any emails, especially with any attachments. Many times I just gave up. I got better wifi at a McDonald's. Seriously, this is supposed to be a JW Marriott? I agree with a previous Yelper that this hotel needs a renovation, but be prepared to pay (probably a hidden fee) as a guest. Secondly, our room smelled horrible during our entire stay. We asked to switch rooms, but were told there are no other rooms available; however, upon speaking with a Marriott diamonds reward member in the lobby, she was given various rooms to choose from on the same day. With that said, the hotel location is great and convenient, but so are so many other adjacent hotels. Also, the staff members were very friendly and extremely helpful. I hate to give bad reviews, especially when the workers at the hotel are so great, but I don't like surprise pricing.

Yelp
A little late review but here it goes I'm Very unhappy with the service received and policies around July 3, 2016. My friends and I (4 people total) booked a room while visiting rio from USA for a weekend (one of them was not staying in the hotel with us so 3 people in one room were checked in). The security stopped us every time we came in and out the hotel saying "we can't all go upstairs" The manager said we all can't stay in one room, so we went ahead and booked another room and guess what the profiling from the security still continued. We were stopped each and every single time with the same story. Needless to say if this is really a "policy" it's ridiculous! Because some people visit guest and if I'm paying for not 1 but 2 rooms I can bring who I want. Second of all, it's embarrassing because you're doing it in front of other people with no valid reason. I will not return or recommend. Many other beautiful hotels in the same strip.

Yelp
Hotel is great & centrally located in the middle of Copacabana. Staff are helpful & friendly. They have a nice roof deck but the service is terrible there - took over an hour for the waiter to bring drinks - food took even longer.
