"The first JW Marriott in mainland China occupies floors 41 to 59 of the 60-story multi-use Tomorrow Square development. One of the city’s most distinctive buildings, its shape is often likened to the drill bit or a fountain pen. Rooms offer a sense of openness, courtesy of the architectural mirror adjacent to the headboard, and frosted glass on the closet and interior bath doors. Walls use fiddle-back makore (the wood used to make violins) in panels and silk-textured wallpapers as embellishment. Studio Suites have elongated horizontal bay windows to take full advantage of the property’s elevated setting. By AFAR Traveler , AFAR Local Expert"

First time staying here, always liked staying in JW but this one has given me quite a bit of mixed feelings. Before that in the app, I couldn't even know my original room type or there was any upgrades the room type just disappeared just with the booking. Location is not bad actually right near Renmin Square station. It's probably less than 5 minutes walk from the station exit 11. However at night, they close the exit after 930pm and same for exit 10 so you have to walk further by getting out from exit 9. Don't know what nonsense is that. From the ground floor you take the lift to 38th floor reception for check in, then I got upgraded and took another lift up to the 59th floor. What I didn't like staying so high, the lift waiting times are long. I guess that's why there are seats by the lift. Got to the room. It was pretty big but it felt very dated. Old, dark and wooden was my impression. There was no rain shower and there were these 2 massage nozzles which were pretty useless. Visited the lounge during afternoon supposed to have finger food but only like scone and madeleine available. Went back again in the evening and there was more selection. Interesting library on the 60th floor, also the highest library in the world. Worth taking a short visit only accessible via from the stairs in the lounge. Had a look at the amenities. Visited the gym and saw the saunas and jacuzzi. Then wanted to visit the pools which was a long and complicated walk to the next building and taking a lift. Saw the outdoor and indoor pools. Had the breakfast on the 38th floor and was quite disappointed with the food. Didn't find the selection good, some of the items I took were not even warm. Disappointed by the scrambled eggs. The first bite I took and there was egg shells. When I sat down the staff asked me if I wanted any drink and I said green tea and they also totally forgot about it. Service needs improvement especially at the breakfast area. Normal but not exceptional stay with Marriott JW, that is not usually the case.

This was a deeply disappointing stay and, frankly, shocking for a hotel carrying the JW Marriott name. From the start, there was a strong sewer smell throughout the hallways, which immediately raised concerns about cleanliness and maintenance. Inside the room, the situation did not improve, bath towels were damp and carried strong food odors. Towels were replaced multiple times, but the issue was never resolved, pointing to serious laundry and hygiene problems. We also paid an extra for two additional guests for access to the Business Lounge and breakfast. Despite paying for this, the lounge and breakfast areas were consistently underserved, with empty serving dishes and very limited food availability. On several occasions, there was simply no food available at all. When food was present, it was greasy, unhealthy, and poorly prepared, often cooked using pork lard oil. This was particularly frustrating because we clearly communicated our dietary restrictions. Management repeatedly promised to prepare food using non-pork oil, but those promises were never honored. What was most concerning was observing a manager flip signage related to pork oil usage, creating the appearance of accommodation without actually changing food preparation. This felt misleading and unprofessional. Throughout the stay, there was no sense of urgency, accountability, or empathy from management. Issues were acknowledged verbally but never meaningfully resolved. Broken promises, poor communication, and a lack of follow-through defined the experience. In my 26 years as a Marriott / Bonvoy member, I have never experienced such a combination of hygiene issues, poor food practices, misrepresentation, and weak customer management at a so-called luxury property. This hotel does not meet JW Marriott standards and falls far short of what loyal Marriott guests expect. I would strongly caution Bonvoy members specially frequent or long-term guests to manage expectations or consider other options.

It was my birthday week and the staff prepared a great birthday cake for me. And great location and executive lounge. Gave me a great upgrade to executive suite. Only downside is there’s no bidet in the room. Beautiful Christmas decorations.

I chose this hotel for its convenient location and the chance to enjoy Shanghai’s skyline during my stay. The city view from the upper floors above the 50th level was wide, clear, and very satisfying. The hotel is close to major attractions, and getting around—whether on foot or by taxi—was very convenient. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only drawback was the slight smell of cigarette smoke when I first entered the room, which matches what other reviewers mentioned. This was a bit disappointing. Overall, the location, view, and service were strong, and I would consider staying here again.

This hotel has a undeniably beautiful view of Shanghai from the 38th floor lobby. Although not a new hotel but the hotel is well maintained and the service is superb. Especially Anna at the front desk is very professional and friendly. Also I would reconnect to sit down and have something to drink at the lobby lounge on 38th floor while looking out at the great view. The vindow seats are perfect. Lisa at the lobby lounge prepared the tea and served it for me. She has a good attitude and is very attentive. She refilled the hot water for my tea on time. Awesome all in all!

I have stayed at this hotel many times and always enjoy my stays. Usually when I see Anna at the reception I feel happy. She’s very friendly and welcoming. This time it was Claire and Carrie that helped me for checking in. Both of them are very nice and helped to arrange a great room for me. Moreover, it’s so nice to have some relaxing time in the lobby lounge and drinking tea while having a beautiful view of Shanghai. The staff of the lobby lounge are also great and they remember my preference to drink tea.

This hotel ticks all the boxes you'd expect from a JW Marriott. It is located in the centre of the great city of Shanghai and it towers above the local area.|The room was large, clean and everything was pristine inside. The bedding was ultra comfortable. Bathroom was spotless and everything fully working.|Reception and check-in is on floor 38 and you have a stunning view of the city during check-in.|Staff were very professional, friendly and helpful and they went above and beyond to make sure our stay was as enjoyable as possible.|We also tried the executive lounge on floor 59 and that had a good selections of drinks and snacks and ,during certain hours, a mini food buffet.|A wide choice of food is available for breakfast every morning to cater to all tastes.|The location of the hotel is also ideal for visiting some of the main spots of the city. You are a 10 minute walk from the Nanjing Street pedestrian area and the People's Square Subway station is a 4 minute walk.|I would not hesitate to stay there again next time I visit Shanghai.

This hotel absolutely shines due to its great location and friendly staff. Lana and her colleague Allison went above and beyond every day to help turn this into the perfect stay. ||The hotel is very nice, and surprisingly quiet given the urban sprawl you see from the windows looking down across the city. The room was exactly what you expect from a hotel of this caliber. But the staff is even better.
