In-Depth Review of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge in Kenya - AFAR

"This Marriott-branded safari lodge, opened in 2023 on the fringes of the Masai Mara National Reserve overlooking the Talek River, blends luxury, wellness and resort-style amenities with a bush experience designed for deep relaxation and connection to nature. The 20 spacious suites are finished in neutral hues with pan‑African patterns and each includes a private outdoor veranda with two lounge chairs, an outdoor shower and a solar‑heated outdoor whirlpool, where guests can watch hippos snort and crocodiles slink through the river. An extensive wellness offering features a spa with two treatment rooms, a cold plunge pool, sauna and steam room, plus a pool and gym; an on-site Canon studio run by photographer Moses Letura provides wildlife photography classes and edited images. Dining focuses on fresh, seasonal food—partly sourced from a 16,000‑sq‑ft organic garden—with rotating menus and themed nights (the reviewer praised a family‑style Indian feast), along with late‑night room snacks and drinks. Sustainability is emphasized: about 80% of the property’s energy comes from on‑site solar panels, harvested rainwater irrigates the garden, glass water bottles replace plastic, and 5,000 trees were planted on the 43‑acre site (guests can plant a tree during their stay). The lodge prioritizes local hiring (roughly 60% of staff from nearby communities), runs apprenticeship and guiding‑school programs, and includes accessibility features such as a one‑level layout, an ADA‑compliant suite, an accessible common washroom and safari vehicles with wider doors. The property was temporarily closed for repairs after nationwide flooding in May 2024 and reopened July 15; rates start around $2,475 per person per night and the lodge participates in the Marriott Bonvoy program. Though still working out a few early service kinks, attentive staff—particularly a standout female safari driver and guide—helped create memorable wildlife moments, from a cheetah hunt to sightings of the multicolored lilac‑breasted roller." - Sarika Bansal

JW Marriott Masai Mara Safari Lodge: First In

"Set the scene Forget about JW Marriott’s typical gleaming high-rise hotels and mega resorts. For Marriott’s first foray into the safari game, the brand has kept things appropriately snug with just 20 tents pitched up on the bushy banks of the Maasai Mara’s Talek River. The thrill starts well before check in: within minutes of touching down at the reserve’s Keekorok airstrip (which offers direct turboprop connections with Nairobi), you might spot lions lolling in the tall grass, or elephants grazing along the road. Upon arrival at the camp, a wobbly wooden suspension bridge crosses the river (and with that, the reserve’s natural border) to the canvas-roofed communal lounge, where plenty of zebra-patterned pillows, wood-carved elephant statues and wall-spanning portraits of Masaai tribespeople instantly deliver on the African bush camp fantasy. Ultra-spacious tents, a lounger-lined pool, and a cozy bonfire pit make this a plush spot to retreat between game drives. The small-scale, anything-goes vibe makes it feel un-Marriott in the best possible way. The backstory All eyes were on this hotel when it opened in April 2023, marking an exciting new chapter for JW Marriott and the greater Marriott umbrella. As the world’s largest hotel chain’s first-ever safari camp, and the smallest outpost in its hotel group, the JW Marriott Masai Mara is a sandbox of sorts—a way to figure out how the trusted Marriott formula translates in the African bush. Mere weeks after opening, outlook is promising: the camp has been booked out for months in advance. The project has also spurred Marriott (along with some other global hotel chains) to sniff out partner sites beyond the Maasai Mara and Kenya to expand their budding safari portfolio. The rooms Each of the twenty tents is similar in their generous size and style—with the exception of the honeymoon villa (the only tent with a private plunge pool) and an interconnecting family suite. Like the rest of the camp, rooms are safari-chic without the colonial tropes. Between their canvas walls' zipper- and roll-up windows you’ll find a supremely comfortable four-poster bed (draped in mosquito netting) and decor of the usual safari-lodge suspects: Maasai warrior busts, wicker lampshades and ‘tribal’ mirrors fringed with jute and sea shells. Is it boundary-pushing style? No. Albeit lovely, the look is more Zara Home than haute hospitality—it’s a Marriott, after all.  Amenity-wise, things are tip-top: Each tent comes with a canopied balcony overlooking the river and bush (for in-room wildlife spotting potential) and has an outdoor hot tub to soak in the view. Bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers, zhuzhed up with licks of marble and copper to up the glam factor. Bring a book along, though: The tents are the first rooms within the Marriott portfolio to forgo TVs—but with these views, who needs one? Nightly all-inclusive rates start at $2,900 for two people per night, or $1,750 per individual person per night. (Premium wine and spirits, spa treatments, gratuities, and park entrance fees aren't included) Food and drink Sarabi restaurant and the adjoining Fig Tree Lounge sit at the heart of the camp to offer the human equivalent of the watering hole in view just across the river. Guests gather here in the early morning for pre-game-drive croissants and coffee in thermos cups, while late risers trickle in for a breakfast (the herby scrambled eggs are divine) and flakey pastries, all in the shade of a giant fig tree. For lunch and dinner, chefs design rotating three-course menus (in order to keep food waste to a minimum) that depend on what’s available that day from both suppliers around Kenya and the on-site vegetable garden. We had lunches including falafel wraps and zingy cucumber gazpacho, and dinners of citrusy salmon and lamb chops. That said, the kitchen team is happy to go off-menu too: Ask for a spread of local specialities, and they’ll deliver a bona fide Kenyan feast of roast meats, salted cabbage, and ugali (dense corn-meal cake). While the restaurant meals are delightful, it’s the bush breakfasts and savanna sundowners—all part of the package—that will stick with you long after your return home. Expect the full safari fantasy of folding tables with white tablecloths fluttering in the breeze, gleaming ice buckets with champagne and Tusker beers, and pop-up kitchen and cocktail stations pitched under a lone acacia tree. The spa JW Marriott brought along its signature Spa by JW concept, but gave it an African makeover. Occupying a trio of tents near the pool, it’s a welcome spot for post-safari rubdowns and sunburn-soothing facials done with all-natural spa products from South African skincare brand Healing Earth. Treatment rooms overlook the bush where, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot baboons and zebras strolling past while a soft-spoken therapist kneads your muscles into blissful submission. For a little more action, there’s a breezy gym tent with on-theme equipment made from leather and polished wood, as well as guided sunset yoga sessions around the pool.  The neighborhood/area The Masai Mara National Reserve unfurls across the river. This is one of Kenya’s most popular safari spots for good reason; the vast national park is prime Big Five territory, which means you’re almost guaranteed to encounter lions, elephants, cape buffaloes, and with a pinch of luck you might spot the more elusive rhinos and leopards. Herds of zebras, giraffes, and gazelles hop past as soon as you leave the camp in a semi-open safari jeep (game drivers are included in the room rate), while the Talek River and the nearby watering hole attract baboons, hippos, and even the occasional Nile crocodile. The camp’s position on the reserve’s northeastern perimeter also puts guests relatively close to the area's famed wildebeest migration action, which takes place from July to October.  The service “Hospitality from the heart” is one of those hackneyed hotel-lingo terms—but I fail to find a better phrase to describe the genuine and warm service here. From the hand-written goodnight notes by my housekeeper, Mercy, to the endless post-safari chats with ever-cheery restaurant manager Thelma and her team, every interaction was a delight, and felt far from contrived. Even better, the hotel has made it a mission to have an overall staff that's at least 70 percent Maasai locals. In my stay during the first month of operation, that count hovered around 65 percent. Many of them had only just kicked off their hospitality careers, a fact that was hard to believe thanks to the team’s cheery attitudes and casual confidence.  For families The lodge welcomes children ages six and up, and has a family suite with two separate bedrooms for larger groups. While there’s no kids club (or TVs), a library stocked with board games offers plenty of after-dark and rainy-day entertainment. Eco effort A luxury lodge of this caliber located in a natural reserve may never be truly sustainable, but the hotel strives to keep its environmental footprint as small as possible: Most of the camp has been built from responsibly sourced wood around the existing vegetation, while keeping wildlife migration routes intact. On the resource front, solar panels and a thermodynamic water heater convert Kenya’s plentiful sunshine into electricity for the on-site water borehole (which provides water that’s filtered and distributed to both the lodge and nearby local communities) and hot showers. While there’s still plenty of room for improvement, it’s encouraging to see that sustainability isn’t an afterthought in this wild setting. Accessibility All public areas and three of the tents are accessible for wheelchair users; one of those has a bathroom adapted for ADA standards. Anything left to mention? To increase your chances of spotting wildlife from your balcony, ask for tent 19 or 20: Both overlook the camp’s animal crossing, which sees elephants, zebras and even lions pass through at night." - Chris Schalkx

Your Next Safari Lodge Could Be a Marriott—We Took a Closer Look - AFAR

"Opening in early 2023, the lodge sits on the fringes of the Masai Mara National Reserve near the Talek River, where hippos sunbathe and the wildebeest migration passes every August. The property will feature 20 modern tents made from natural materials, including two connected tents for groups or families and one tent designed to meet Marriott’s global physical-accessibility standards; all common areas will be wheelchair accessible. Amenities include a dining area, gym, an extensive spa with two spa tents and a whirlpool, and a two-acre organic garden that will supply much of the kitchen’s produce. The design follows mindful JW Marriott principles—incorporating earth, wind, fire, and water with Masai-inspired fabrics and decor—and the build prioritized existing vegetation (building around trees and planting more). Eco-friendly measures include on-site bottling of purified water, minimal single-use plastics, solar power, and biodigesters for waste. The property aims to employ roughly 70% staff from the local Masai community, with staff housing that offers recreational facilities, a dining room, football pitches, and a health clinic. Guests can arrive by a five- to six-hour road transfer from Nairobi or a short flight to a nearby airstrip followed by a 25-minute game drive; open-air Toyota Land Cruisers driven by experienced guides will include binoculars and chilled sundowner provisions. Activities extend beyond game drives to bird-watching, nature walks, balloon safaris, and visits to Masai villages, and rates are expected to range from $1,500 to $2,500 per person per night, all inclusive; the property will join the Marriott Bonvoy program (category TBD)." - Sarika Bansal

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge (Talek, Maasai Mara) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It’s a long way, both literally and figuratively, from the brand’s urban luxury-hotel beginnings to the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge. This is a proper safari camp, tents and all, right on the Talek River in the Masai Mara National Reserve. The suites, in luxury-camp tradition, stretch the definition of tents almost to the limit — beneath these canvas rooms you’ll find lavish en-suite bathrooms with indoor-outdoor showers and, on your private deck, a jacuzzi. The camp’s open-air restaurant and lounge are the social center of the hotel, and a spa awaits at the end of a long day on safari." - Tablet Hotels

Our five nights at the lodge this August were magical. The incredible experience began the moment we landed at Keekorok airstrip and were greeted by Lorna, and it never let up until we were saying our goodbyes to all the staff.||The lodge feels intimate, beautifully designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape and well located to explore the different areas of the Mara. We loved our tent; it was a wonderful sanctuary to return to after a day in the bush, with Mercy always anticipating and taking care of what we needed. And the food was a delight, especially Kenya night. The chef was wonderfully accommodating to our requests which we really appreciated as we had kids in our group. Definitely ask about lunch in the JW Garden. All in all, nzuri sana!||But the real magic of this place is its people. There’s a culture of kindness and warmth here that extends from the guides to the servers to the housekeeping staff. You get the sense that everyone is proud of what they do and loves where they work, and that energy is infectious.||We have to give special thanks to a few people who made our trip so personal: |- Our guide, Lorna, was an absolute superstar. Her knowledge of the Mara and its wildlife is amazing, but it was her patience and kindness that truly blew us away. She got us sightings of all the Big Five and made every game drive feel special without compromising safety.|- Patrick, our server, was always there with a bright smile. He was so good to us and never said no to any special requests.|- Mercy kept our tent welcoming and pristine, and we looked forward to her sweet, handwritten notes every evening. |- A huge thank you as well to Moses and Felix at the Canon studio. The simple photography tips they gave made a huge difference and their help in curating our images were a fantastic bonus. What a treasure to bring home with us!||And to Victor, Josiah, Leshan, Milton, Diana, and everyone else at the JW: Asante Sana! We will cherish the memories from this trip forever and are already dreaming of our return.

Our stay at JW Marriott Masai Mara was nothing short of magical. From start to finish, everything was seamlessly comfortable — far beyond what I had imagined for a safari trip. I thought traveling in Kenya would be a bit rough around the edges, but this experience proved me completely wrong. It was easy, relaxing, and incredibly well taken care of. The staff were outstanding — warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making our stay special. Every little detail was thought through, and we were treated like family. We were also extremely lucky to witness all of the Big Five, plus so many other incredible animals in their natural habitat. The game drives were exciting yet safe, and our guides were knowledgeable and respectful of the environment. And the food — wow! The hotel fed us like royalty. Every meal was a delight, beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients and served with care. If you’re dreaming of an African safari but worried about the challenges — don’t be. JW Marriott Masai Mara makes it an effortless blend of adventure and luxury. Highly recommended!

Best resort experience I have ever had but what made it extra special was the people. I have never bonded with the staff as much as I have on this trip. Everyone was kind, generous, and thoughtful. Extra big shout out to Moses who took amazing photos of us, Emily who took care of our every single need, no matter how ridiculous, and my girl Zaifa who was stellar beyond words. Thank you for the most epic week!

Our time at the JW Masai Mara Lodge was absolutely incredible!! Mike & Liz were fantastic guides and worked really hard to give us an amazing safari experience. We got to witness all of the big 5 except for the rhino and got to see a large wildebeest crossing. We got excellent photos and appreciate the camera service. The property is also spectacular - beautiful tents and common areas. We also participated in the activities offered including archery and a village visit. It was so great to experience the local culture. The food and drinks were great. We enjoyed seeing Nicherwa at the restaurant each day and Victor was a fantastic bartender / great to chat with. Overall, the staff is absolutely amazing. Everyone we met from the front desk to housekeeping were so welcoming and kind. A top notch experience we will remember for a lifetime!

I could write paragraphs on how incredible this entire trip was and still not capture the sentiment adequately! From start to finish this was the experience of a lifetime, mostly due to the JW. Every single moment from touchdown at the airstrip to taking back off again is so personalized and thoughtful that it's almost hard to believe. As a 2024 Marriott Titanium member and now Platinum member, I've stayed at Marriott's worldwide, and none will compare. You are greeted with smiles, pure hospitality, incredible food, and the physical property itself is fantastic - I took advantage of the pool, a massage at the spa, the bar, the outdoor shower, and enjoyed every second of the jaw dropping lodge itself. I cannot state effusively enough that every member of the staff was superb, but special kudos to: Hassan (Manager) - he went out of his way to check in on us throughout the stay that I almost forgot we weren't the only ones there he needed to connect with (and let me share a tearful goodbye and hug when we had to leave); Doc Vic (Bartender) - no bartender will ever compare!! He was such a bright breath of fresh air and had our cocktails down pat; Elias (Staff) - the embodiment of hospitality; Ivy (Spa) - do not skip a massage with her!!!); Diana (Staff) - just fabulous to interact with; Timothy (Housekeeping) - the personal notes every day were so fun to come home to; Patrick (Front desk) - answered every silly question I had with a smile. SPECIAL SPECIAL shoutout to FESTUS, our daily game driver. I felt as though we were friends by the time we left; he was so knowledgeable, so easy-natured, and clearly passionate about the animals. ||If you have the opportunity to visit, do not hesitate! I saw every animal I could have dreamed of, the lodge is a fantasy come true, and I haven't felt that relaxed, taken care of, and looked after at a Marriott before.

We thought this would be a once-in-a-lifetime splurge — but after five unforgettable nights at JW Marriott Masai Mara, we’re already saving up to return. This is so much more than just a luxury hotel — it’s a deeply special, thoughtfully run lodge that gave us the greatest travel experience of our lives.||Yes, the setting is spectacular: the lodge is seamlessly integrated into the landscape with sweeping views of the Mara, stunning design, and every amenity you could hope for. But what makes this place truly extraordinary is the staff. Every single person we encountered was warm, kind, attentive, and incredibly proactive. If there was a breeze during a meal, someone quietly brought over a blanket. If it rained, an umbrella or golf cart appeared before we could even ask. The hospitality here isn’t just five-star — it’s deeply heartfelt.||If you're booking your stay, we HIGHLY recommend requesting Josiah Konana as your butler!!! He is truly what made this trip so special and so magical for us and made this trip truly feel like our honeymoon every single day — from surprise lunches in the garden to handwritten frosting messages on our dessert plates. He is incredibly thoughtful, meticulous, and intuitive, and made us feel so celebrated and cared for. We still talk about him constantly — and we truly consider him a friend for life.||We also want to shout out our amazing game driver, Lorna. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, deeply passionate about the wildlife and the land, and made us feel safe, inspired, and excited for every single drive. She was down for adventure rain or shine, and always prioritized our comfort — from adjusting routes and blankets to customizing our daily drives. It meant so much to be guided by her.||One unexpected perk we absolutely loved was the Canon camera program offered on-site. Not having to buy, rent, or lug a huge DSLR across the world was a game-changer. The hotel provided professional-grade cameras free of charge, and Moses on the photography team helped teach us how to use them, made setting adjustments, and even offered to help us edit our photos. It elevated our game drives and gave us the most incredible memories to take home — in both experience and images.||If you're even considering staying here: do it!!! JW Marriott Masai Mara isn’t just the best hotel we’ve stayed at — it’s the most meaningful, joyful, and memorable travel experience we’ve ever had. We are forever grateful we had our honeymoon here!

This was the best trip we have ever taken; anything I can say will not be enough. And the team at JW made it even more memorable. Special thanks to Lorna and Patrick!||If you appreciate details, here’s a breakdown:|🌟 Pros:|• Location: The lodge sits just outside the reserve, across a bridge. Each morning and evening, you’ll witness hippos—including babies—descending to the river below. Crocodiles are often visible right beneath you.|• Experiences: Enjoy bush breakfasts, lunches, and sundowners. You can also have meals and snacks packed for full-day (10–12 hour) safari drives. The resort is all-inclusive.|• Masai Village Visit: Bring cash and be ready to bargain—it’s part of the experience. Your local contact will even encourage it.|• Camera Room: They provide a camera and have two full-time staff to assist with photography and editing. Bring your own SD card and allow time before departure to select and edit your best shots. (Tip: maybe don’t take 10,000 photos!)|• Amenities: The bathroom and shower are top-notch—possibly better than other accommodations. The tent includes an outdoor jacuzzi and rivals luxury stays.|• Laundry Service: Travel light! You get five laundered items per day, freeing up luggage space for souvenirs from the Masai village or lodge shop.|• Communication: The team is just a WhatsApp message away. We got our guide’s number on Day 1 and coordinated everything seamlessly.|• Staff: The team at JW is simply outstanding.||⚠️ Cons:|• Crowded Sightings: Popular events like cheetah hunts or river crossings can attract 20+ vehicles. The animals seem unfazed, but it’s worth noting.|• Tent Acoustics: Tents don’t have solid walls. We didn’t mind, but some guests found late-night conversations disruptive. It would help if the property clarified this upfront.|• Store Prices: Check prices before buying (at JW) —some items may surprise you.|• No TV: Not a downside for us, but worth mentioning for those who care.||💡 Tips:|• River Crossings: These typically happen at Sand River and Mara River. We saw crocodiles at Mara River.|• Calendar: Ask about all the events & options and spread them out. Ex: Bush breakfast (already planned ahead for multiple guests)|• Travel dates: Based on our existing commitments and online recommendations and booked in August – not disappointed at all. July may have been better.|• Arrival: Arrive on an early flight, so you can see animals on the way to the lodge and with enough time to settle in and then head out for a game drive (with a possible sundowner). You are paying $200 pp for that day.|• Fees: The park fees cover 5 calendar days. That was fine with us, we used the last day for an outdoor lunch at the JW garden before heading to the airstrip.|• Pace Yourself: To truly experience the Mara, ask your guide to slow down. You’ll spot more birds and soak in the surroundings. Fun fact: the hills where we saw a rhino smelled like basil!
