"Far from the big resorts, in a lush, hilly corner of the Big Island that the locals consider the real Hawaii, is Ka’awa Loa Plantation & Guesthouse. This tremendously charming bed-and-breakfast is set on a small coffee farm and fruit orchard. It’s on the slopes of Mauna Loa, some 1,200 feet above Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook met his fate), delivering bird’s-eye ocean views to the guesthouse and its expansive lawn. The two-story main house has five guest rooms (four have half baths, one has a shared bath), and there’s also a stand-alone cottage for those looking for more privacy. Guests tend to hang out on the large wraparound veranda with Kula (the resident pooch) or in the tree-shaded gardens, where there are countless pretty places to curl up with a book and idle away the day. Also outside, for all guests to use when they wish, is a hot tub, a cedar-walled steam hut, and two (outdoor) lava-rock showers, which are particularly pleasant after a day of hiking on the nearby trails or snorkeling with turtles at Honaunau Bay. The inn’s amiable owners, Michael Martinage and Greg Nunn, are usually on hand to lend beach towels, umbrellas, boogie boards, and coolers, and give the lowdown on locals’ favorite island spots, from hidden beaches to hole-in-the-wall poke shacks."

This is by far and away the BEST b&b I have ever had the pleasure to stay at! Unparalleled beauty inside the spacious house and gorgeous landscaping. Rooms were excellent, delicious homemade breakfast every day and the staff is hard working, friendly and meticulous. Stay here if you're lucky enough to!

Best b&b I have ever stayed in. I would go back just for the views, the outdoor shower, swing and the amazing breakfast spread made fresh by Hannah everyday. Only thing to note - if you don't prefer an outdoor shower, you will have to use the only indoor shower that's shared between all the guests (every room has half bathrooms).

Staying at Ka’awaloa Plantation Bed & Breakfast was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and aloha spirit. The property is absolutely stunning—nestled in lush greenery with panoramic views of Kealakekua Bay. Our room was spotless, beautifully decorated, and incredibly peaceful, with the sounds of nature all around. Breakfast each morning was a highlight—fresh tropical fruit from the garden, homemade pastries, and locally sourced coffee that was simply the best we’ve ever had. The hosts went above and beyond to make us feel at home, offering great tips for local spots and hidden gems. If you’re looking for a serene, authentic Big Island experience, Ka’awaloa Plantation is a perfect choice. We can’t wait to come back! Mahalo Tim & Lorena

My husband and I just returned to Boston after a month's travel. Little did we know when we started our trip that we had saved the best for last. Our last three nights were spent at Ka'awa Loa Plantation. It is a place we will carry in our hearts for the rest of our lives: it is stunning. Sitting in rocking chairs on the veranda, surrounded by lush plantings and birdsong, overlooking the sea simply cannot be beat. It is here we had wonderful breakfasts (many types of fresh fruit selections, eggs, homemade pancakes or waffles with either maple or homemade coconut syrup, various breads, bacon or sausage) and where we returned after a day of exploring the area. In the afternoon, freshly baked goods were left out for guests to enjoy. Our room was clean and very comfortable. The bottom floor is mostly living space that guests are free to enjoy. This includes a sitting area with a fireplace with candles. Guests are also free to use the kitchen to make tea or to use a small refrigerator for personal food. We mostly interacted with the wonderful, gracious Hannah whose calm, friendly manner never failed to put a smile on our faces. She is also a wealth of information on sites to visit: we were very interested in cultural and historical sites and gathered much insight from her. While I read one review from a person complaining that the instructions about cleanliness were excessive, I appreciated the efforts to keep everyone healthy. The space is shared, including use of the kitchen. Don't we all teach our children to wash their hands before eating? The requests to wash or sanitize before using shared space and utensils seemed wise to me, not OCD. I wish we could have stayed longer. During our stay, we did scoot into Kona for some shopping and were VERY happy we were not staying there. One can always drive there but Ka'awa Loa Plantation offers a tranquility that is impossible to beat. Just drive up and down the driveway slowly....tis a bit winding and bumpy! Stay here! You will not be sorry.

We love this place! The owners and staff are superb too! Old plantation style feel with all the modern amenities. Too many personal touches to list. My wife found this gem and I can't encourage you enough to stay here. We met several other travelers who were repeat customers who come back every year. You will fall in love with this place and the people. Oh, and the breakfasts were fabulous too. Artfully done. And don't forget to buy a bag of coffee from their plantation for when you get home!

Google
my husband and i stayed here for 2 nights in the suite to celebrate our wedding anniversary. we both grew up staying at resorts for our parents’ business trips and have since traveled all over together, so when i say this is one of our favorite spots we’ve ever stayed at… ka’awa loa is out of the hustle and bustle of kona but conveniently located for all the activities (we did the manta ray night swim ecotour, a coffee tour, the historic park, and a local hike.) the grounds are beautiful, room was spacious, and breakfast was great. shower was the best. hosts are awesome! just book it :)

Extraordinary Experience - like walking back in time to B and Bs of 20 years ago. But better. The location is simply stunning, the hospitality top-notch, and breakfast a feast. Suggest 3 nights here, two was not enough! Plenty of places within 5 mins drive to have dinner. The Hostess’s welcome and smile reminded me of the hostess from Netflix show ‘White locus.’

Yelp
Definitely find this place during the day, it's up a steep hill and the signage isn't big or highly lit. It's up a steep hill that's one car lane wide but for both ways. There was coffee cake for afternoon tea when I got there. The porch is the best part of this place. It overlooks the mountain with a great view of the water and forests below. Breakfast was nice since it came with avocado, cut papaya, a piece of breakfast cake and smoothie as well as tea/coffee. I did like meeting the geckos that look like the GEICO gecko during breakfast who were wanting fruit. Cons: there's no AC. Also I was woken up by I think a rooster at 5 am. They do try to space out people getting breakfast so you can't rush in at 730 am for food.

Yelp
Beautiful ground, delicious breakfast. We stayed in the mountain room, which was comfortable. Outdoor lava showers were a great experience. Overall highly recommend

Yelp
From personal experience, I highly advise coming when it's still day outside. Trust me on this one. I drove up and down Napoopoo Rd due to a delayed flight and was close to having a full on panic attack. Roads are severely dark that you cannot differentiate between driving/reversing onto road or out to sea *yikes*. Once you finally arrive at your destination, keep on driving up the hill until you reach the end. Don't forget, it is crazy dark outside, don't be alarmed by the sounds of nature. You'll park to the side next to the other 4 cars by the garage (not into it) and quietly find directions on a pin with your name on it. Come quietly inside as you make your way to the room. If you survive the night (which, you will), you'll find yourself on what looks like heaven; beautiful oceanview windows overlooking the bay. When you come down, you'll be greeted by the sweetest angel, Hannah. You'll find her in the kitchen in the morning making an all you can eat breakfast. Don't be rude! Say hello, grab a coffee, make your way to the patio and find a table. Hannah will let you know when all is ready based on first-out on the patio. When asked what was my favorite meal in Hawaii, hands down, I say Hannah's breakfast. She made delicious Banana Nut Waffles topped with macadamia nuts tossed in coconut oil and syrup. In addition, she's boiled eggs, cooked turkey bacon, and has sliced up fresh tropical fruits. Don't forget to try her freshly made smoothies made with guava YUMMMM!!!

Yelp
One of the best places to stay on the Big Island. Michael and Greg along with Hannah and the staff are amazing. Vista views, friendly hosts and clean & quaint rooms. The property is in the Captain Cook area of the Big Island and there are lots of amazing places to eat just around the corner. We've stayed here 3 times and can't wait to get back there again. I now plan my trips based on when I can get a room there and then I plan the rest of my vacation. Bottom line - it's just a wonderful place to call your island home. Afternoon treats and an amazing morning breakfast to get your day started.

Yelp
I am noticing a lot of stellar reviews here so I need to get this incident out so you all have some balanced perspective. If you are thinking of booking a stay here, they could cancel on you at a moments notice, in my case 3 days before my reservation, AFTER they confirmed and sent me my deposit receipt. They also only have 5-6 rooms total so if a pipe breaks, tough luck they will cancel on you. The b&b owner Greg was all Aloha and mahalo up until it was no longer convenient for him. Booked 2 nights stay on Nov 14. Got a confirmation email with deposit receipt same day with welcome letter. Fast forward to Friday Nov 20 (3 days before my arrival) and I receive an email from Greg, informing me that he had to cancel my reservation due to issues with one of the rooms. He offered me another nearby B&B, which was frankly not as nice as the plantation. No call, just an email. I'm on the road so of course I can't check emails all the time. On Sunday, I notice his email and called him back right away. This was precisely when he went full bezerk on me. His first accusation was " who doesn't check their email for 3 days" and that "my cell wasn't a US number so he couldn't call me". Lies. I checked my hotels.com booking and my 917 number was front and center. He then went on with his monologue, claiming that he was just trying to help me out but there's nothing he can do and its not his fault that the toilet pipe is broken. I had to exercise my Kamala Harris moment to squeeze in "Greg, let me speak" because he kept talking over me. I don't say this lightly but this was the worst customer service experience coming from a b&b, especially when they're in the wrong! In hindsight, I am glad I don't need to stay at this horrible place and deal with his negative energy.

...Greg and Michael have created a marvelous perch on the volcano overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean...the breakfast is worth the stay...it rocks...

Yelp
My wife, two sons (12 yrs, 10 yrs.), and I enjoyed our 3 night stay here in August. The views of Kealakekua Bay from the back porch are stunning. A major highlight was the Kona coffee (grown on the plantation) and delicious breakfasts with fresh fruit (papaya, lilikoi, watermelon) as well as eggs, pancakes, or quiche. We especially loved the sweetbread! Hannah greeted us at check-in and made us feel at home. Michael, Greg, and Hannah provided helpful tips about beaches and activities. They have a lot of information and made this B&B a special place. We stayed in the Ka'awa Loa Suite on the main floor, which has a spacious, private bathroom with shower. The sound of coqui frogs at night was pleasant. However, there's no air conditioning. The B&B provides beach towels and chairs for guests. A few snorkeling masks were available, but it may be better to rent equipment in town. If you need to wash clothes, the B&B allows you to run a load for only $10. Overall, this was a delightful and peaceful place to stay on the west side of the Big Island!

Yelp
This is my second time to big island. We have 5 persons including a toddler. We are so glad we select this one to stay 4 nights. The location is convenient if you do not want to change hotels and want to visit both Kona and Hilo. The staff are nice and professional. Greg help us figure out the best rooms and make the reservation. The communication is smooth. Hannah prepare delicious breakfast everyday including fresh fruits. The view is also awesome. We can have our breakfast while see the sea and bay. We live at Loa suite and it is great. We will definitely come back if we visit big island again and highly recommend it.

Yelp
This place is special in all the best ways - my wife and I really appreciated staying here two nights to begin our big island trip. The location is on the lower slopes of Mauna Loa with a peek of Kealakekua Bay. Once we arrived, Hannah hostess of the mostest greeted us and showed us around. She had just finished baking triple chocolate macadamia nut brownies which we took a second helping and the recipe. The grounds have multiple fruit trees, a swing, lawn chairs, and hot tub with the sunset ocean view. The breakfasts on the veranda were amazing with lots of fresh fruit, smoothies, eggs, bread and jams, and geckos for company. We enjoyed using the large kitchen to cut fruit and salad. There are also all sorts of beach equipment to use like chairs, towels and boogie boards, outdoor rock showers, and exercise mats to do Pilates among the chickens. The house takes covid precautions and practices social distancing, and we still got to know many of our fellow travelers. Combined with Hannah's warmth, and the owners Greg and Mike's helpfulness, we really felt aloha.

Yelp
So happy my company booked a room here. Michael and Greg were fantastic hosts. And Hana prepared a delicious breakfast. The coffee is grown here on the plantation and is delicious!!! I was only here for one night on business and I will definitely book here when on vacation. The outdoor showers are unique!!!! There is a swing hanging from a huge mango tree that was very popular with the guests. One night is not enough. I do recommend you rent a car from the airport as taxi and Uber service can be limited at times. A great stay!!!!!!!

Yelp
We love this place and have returned many times. Beautiful accommodation, delicious breakfast, gorgeous views, and most of all, lovely kind hosts. The outdoor showers are a treat.

Yelp
Still 5 stars! You know how sometimes you go back to places and they seem to not be as amazing??? This place was not that at all! Still amazing, we took our kids and they hated leaving! No TVs in the main house and they did not care. They loved the food, the beauty of the area, swing, and the inn keeper and Hannah of course!!!

Yelp
I found Ka'awa loa plantation on a fluke through trip advisor.com. This place is a gem amongst gems. The plantation is nestled on a hillside in the Township of Captain Cook. The property overlooks the Pacific Ocean, The home is amazing this whole place is amazing. Every morning we had a great spread for breakfast which includes fruit, cereal, sausage, kalua pork, or sometimes eggs. Michael and Greg have the key to being great host. It has been very comfortable and relaxing we are so thankful we found this place to stay on our vacation

Yelp
This place is magical. Michael and Greg are wonderful and clearly love the island and their part in making it a great place. They are kind and full of advice and amazing cooks! The plantation style home is gorgeous. Our room was beautiful and there were real fresh plants all over! It was a beautiful touch to the decor. The bed was comfortable and it was nice and cool in the house (even without AC). Outside there is a wonderful swing that overlooks a view. IG pics galore! Breakfast was served on the wrap around porch and I've never had such a delicious spread of food at a bed and breakfast. Spinach egg bake, many fruit choices, bacon, smoothies, and more... The best was the mango brownies made from the hundreds of mangoes dropping from the trees all around. They use local (from their property) fruits and veggies. All very fresh and healthy. There are many geckos around the property and these cute little things love to beg for food at breakfast. We loved this and so did many of the other guests. I suppose some could be offended at the little animals but we just thought of it as a added benefits to see the little guys. I can't recommend this place more. I wish I could give it 10 stars. I will be sending all my friends and family here. It is truly the best place on the island!

Yelp
Loved our 2 night stay here. Such an amazing place! A little tricky to find but absolutely worth it. Breakfast on their big porch in the morning definitely a highlight, and both Hannah and Michael were a wealth of local information. Our room was comfortable and the outdoor showers a great experience. I'd definitely recommend staying here, beautiful!!

Yelp
We enjoyed our stay! Hannah, Michael and Dan were great hosts. They are friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were great! This place had very warm, relaxing and peaceful ambiance and beautiful view. My husband loved the outdoor shower. I love the rocking chairs on the porch facing the ocean. Michael was very honest and right about the garden room would not be the right room for light sleepers.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal place. Greg and Hannah made it feel like home for us. We were looking for one night to stay after a horrible stay at another place and called to book the little Cottage. We arrived at 11am so the rooms weren't ready (3pm check in) but they let us drop off the bags and have free use of their beach equipment and outdoor shower (hot and cold water, soap/shampoo provided). The Cottage was super cute, with private bathroom and kitchenette, cable TV and relaxing atmosphere. Very private and away from the main house - perfect for a couple. The main plantation home was stunning and the view from the porch/deck (lanai) was wonderful. You can see some wild chickens and geckos. Hannah was the nicest host we've ever had, always patient and looking to meet our needs, she cooked a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit and sausage and a baked egg dish, along with bread and muffins and all you can drink POG. At night they will leave a baked goodie tray before the leave (banana bread + pineapple cake were what we had) On the day we were leaving, we had a late flight and Greg/Hannah were generous to allow us to leave our bags there so we could spend time on the beach, and then come back and use their outdoor shower and fresh up before going on our flight! Wonderful stay, will definitely stay there our entire time next trip. PS: Make sure to pet the dog and the orange kitty that roams around

Yelp
From the moment I started corresponding via email with the Plantation's proprietors, I knew we were in for a lovely stay: they went to great lengths to very thoroughly answer all of my questions (of which there were many). And when we arrived the hospitality continued with mac nuts and mango juice on the lanai. Staying at the Ka'awa Loa Plantation in Captain Cook is like staying with friends. That is, if your friends like proprietors Greg and Michael: - made you excellent breakfasts every morning, - always had sage advice for any interest or activity you might want to try, - left brownies and pineapple upside down cake out for you before they went to bed and - had a garage with loads of equipment for you to borrow to take to the beach The Plantation is within easy driving distance to some of the island's best snorkeling, which we took full advantage of in the mornings (if you get up early enough, you'll be back in time to catch the aforementioned excellent breakfasts). Captain Cook affords a traveler more of a laid back and local experience, so those looking for ocean based attractions right outside their door or easy access to upmarket shops and spas likely won't see the appeal. But I really liked how relaxed I felt as soon as I arrived and there were enough nearby restaurants to keep things interesting during our five night stay. The town's high elevation means it's often cooler here than in other parts of the island, which was nice when I wanted to read a book on the lanai (it also means, pack a hoodie if you're coming here, you'll need it). Greg and Michael will help make your trip terrific, from booking you a couples massage just outside your cottage to helping point you to the sandy beach of your dreams. If you're looking for a serene break from city life, Ka'awa Loa Plantation is it!

Yelp
Wow! Am I seriously the first one to review this place on Yelp? Hard to believe, because this was our favorite place to stay during our last trip to Hawaii. This B&B is on a coffee farm with beautiful views of the coast of Captain Cook and Kealakekua Bay. Greg & Michael were exceedingly gracious hosts and went out of their way to make sure we were having the best experience possible complete with offering tips on where to go on the island (dolphin viewing, snorkeling) as well as letting us borrow all sorts of beach gear (snorkels, boogie boards, beach mats). Breakfast was a huge assortment of fruit, yogurt, juices, breads and a hot addition every day. This might sound funny, but my favorite thing about this place were the outdoor lava-rock showers where I got to shower with the geckos for company every morning. A couple of notes: The rooms do not have personal showers. Our first room had a toilet and sink, but our second room did not. Also, the wood floors carry sound quite a bit. A couple of leadfoots were staying at this B&B at the same time as us and managed to wake us up VERY early every morning with their stomping. Plan not to sleep in.

Yelp
A Haiku Review of Ka'awa Loa Plantation: Best place we stayed at. Heck, Best BnB I've seen. Thanks Greg & Michael!

Yelp
We decided to stay here spur of the moment on our last night in Hawaii, and we are so glad we did. The house is incredible with amazing views. It's such a tranquil and relaxing setting - having a delightful breakfast on the patio overlooking lush green farms and the ocean was an unforgettable experience. The hosts were incredibly friendly and gracious. Will definitely come back for longer next time.

Yelp
This was my first trip to the Big Island, and we needed a place to stay for our final night. We stumbled upon this spot through HotelTonight, and I feel so lucky we did - I honestly wish we could've stayed here for our entire stay!! The whole property & house are SO beautiful; I especially enjoyed eating breakfast on the lanai with the group of geckos that were begging for food (I gave in and let them nibble on my watermelon rind), and swinging on the lawn overlooking the ocean below. The hosts were wonderful - warm, welcoming, informative & made me feel right at home from the moment we approached the front door. I will most definitely be booking another (longer) stay here during my next visit to the Big Island!! Mahalo Michael, Greg & Hannah!!

Yelp
This was a really fantastic start to our honeymoon on the Big Island. We spent two nights here, and would definitely come back again next time we're there. Though the grounds and facilities were beautiful and deserve five stars themselves, Greg and Michael were very friendly and easygoing hosts, and made the stay far better. They were easy conversationalists, made great breakfasts with ridiculous spreads of local (even on-site) fruit, and were great concierges, recommending everything from where to go to dinner to which direction to take on a hike along the coast. We stayed in the cottage, which was recently remodeled and was really cute - perfect for the first couple days of a honeymoon, tucked separately from the main house, but still with full access to the rest of the property. We stored some beer and wine in the fridge, lounged on the daybed, and appreciated the private bathroom. There were more bugs toward the cottage, and a TON of geckos, but the screens, doors, and punk candles kept them from being an issue. The main property is a great place to relax. We spent hours sitting on the beautiful deck, watching sunsets and spending early morning hours watching the ocean from high above (and I do mean high - you wouldn't be blamed for having white knuckles while going up or down the steep driveway). The hottub is a good size for three or four and has those same ocean views, and is just steps from the main house. Best of all, the lava rock showers are an amazing way to clean up under the stars late at night, and they're plenty big for two :) Only two small nits (and I'm that guy): the wifi didn't reach out to the deck for our Apple products (iphone, ipad, macbook air), and even in the house, we couldn't connect properly. No wifi coverage at the cottage. Cellular coverage is strong, though. Also, you'll want to walk softly around the deck, since the ENORMOUS mango tree out front has a habit of dropping its fruit perilously close to your head. But those really were minor. The prices are perfect, the hosts are awesome, and the grounds are beautiful. If you're looking for a great place to stay on that side of the island, I wouldn't look any further.

Yelp
Probably the best B & B we've ever stayed in--with a delightful location, high above Kealakekua Bay, and a short drive from Captain Cook. The room we stayed in (the first floor suite) was splendid, the house was quiet and other guests very pleasant. Mike and Greg were wonderful hosts, with plenty of helpful and specific suggestions on the best places to eat, sightsee, and snorkel. The breakfast spread was delicious and overall atmosphere very relaxing. Our only regret is we didn't stay a couple of days longer. We're coming back....

Yelp
The Ka'awa Loa Plantation is about 30-40 minutes from the Kona airport off a a small highway that slowly wends its way from the beachy, volcanic lowlands in Kona up to higher (and slightly lusher) ground in Captain Cook. Captain Cook looks out over a beautiful bay that everyone goes to for kayaking and snorkeling. It's colder up here, make no mistake, but it's pleasant. The highway stretch nearby has a fair number of restaurants, snorkel/kayak supply shops, bakeries, banks, etc. It's a good neighborhood -- not overrun and not over-touristed (no idea if locals would agree, but that's my sense). The Ka'awa Loa Plantation is about a mile below the main highway, on Napoopoo Rd, which continues on down to the bay. It's situated up a super steep and narrow driveway, and you'll first see the cottage and then the main house. The main house is nicely updated and open with a view out across the bay. There's a nice little grassy patch with a couple of lounge chairs, a tree swing, and a hot tub (there's no pool or other resort-type amenities). The cottage is a little more rustic -- it's not fancy, but it does the trick quite nicely, and you get a little more privacy and space. You're still free to roam the main house and use the space. Probably the most valuable thing you get at Ka'awa Loa Plantation is the "concierage" service. Well, not exactly a concierge, but the owners are incredibly helpful, patient, and knowledgeable when it comes to planning your day, making a restaurant reservation, or setting up a massage appointment. It's great -- really great. The breakfasts are excellent, too. In the five or six days there, I think there was only one dud breakfast, but that's just a question of personal taste. The coffee is extraordinary. They also make the occasional post-dinner brownie or upside down pineapple cake that they leave out in the kitchen. Several other guests bought takeout dinner (pizza, etc.) and ate it in the main house with a bottle of wine - it's a great idea, and a good way to relax and keep your costs down. There's no great urgency to be out and about around here. Highly recommended (depending on what you're looking for in a vacation stay). For me, it was a nice balance of nice (without being over the top), removed (but not too far removed), and relaxing (while still being active and engaged).

Yelp
Mahalo Greg and Michael! Excellent B&B. We have stayed here twice for a total of seven nights. Three years between stays. The quality of the rooms, food, and experience is still top notch. Amazing views and grounds. Both Greg and Michael are super nice, talkative, welcoming and always have time to say hello and share advice. Breakfast was great everyday with plenty of choices and tons of fruit. Free wifi available. They have beach equipment, snorkel gear and coolers available for use. Hot tub and outdoor showers. Reasonably priced rooms. We will be back!

Yelp
Ka'awa Loa Plantation is a wonderful B&B, and our two day visit there was all too brief. Situated among five+ acres of coffee and fruit trees, the property and main house are gorgeous. You can spend hours just sitting on the wrap-around lanai, enjoying the view of the ocean, or you can stay inside in the comfy and stylish common room. The breakfasts are excellent -- the first day we had banana pancakes, pineapple sausage, and a variety of fruits (nearly all) grown on site, along with fresh juice and/or their homegrown coffee (but, alas, no decaf). Michael and Greg are very friendly hosts, and their recommendations for where to eat and explore were outstanding. They're happy to lend beach towels and snorkel gear as needed. Ask for a tour of the plantation too, it's a lot of fun (but be sure to wear insect repellent). As others have mentioned, the outdoor showers are very nice, and there's also an outdoor hot tub (which we didn't have a chance to try in our only full day) and a wet sauna (which only gets fired up every other day or so). The only drawbacks are minor. Our bedroom was small (it was tight for two people with luggage), with no closet or armoire, and no full length mirror. Like most of the other rooms, it came with just a sink and toilet, and our bathroom lacked a convenient electrical outlet for a hairdryer/razor. The lighting could also be better. But a full bath is across the hall, and the outdoor showers were fine for us. Also, no shoes may be worn inside (clean flip flops or sandals seem to be OK), which can be a bit of a hassle when coming and going, but this seems to be a common practice among Big Island B&Bs. Lastly, the driveway is quite steep, giving our wimpy rental car a bit of trouble. If you're planning to stay on the Kona-side of the island, Ka'awa Loa Plantation is highly recommended.

Yelp
From the moment we stepped into the double screened swing door and saw the view, the big smile from Hannah (like the house mother), the huge lanai, the tree swing, the hot tub (!), we knew we had chosen the right place. Our family of 4 reserved the palatial suite for our 2 night stay (I wished we could've stayed a month!)--huge bathroom with shower and tub, walk-in closet, comfortable king bed and twin bed with small dining table and reading chair--it made us feel like ali'i :-) Hannah spoiled us with delicious breakfast every morning: fresh fruit, Blueberry waffles, turkey sausage, the guest house's own coffee and fresh juices! Our kids loved the tree swing right into the view over the bay and showering with rainbows in the double outdoor shower! Greg and Michael have done a spectacular job at creating a sparkling slice of paradise within paradise! Geckos and starlight galore!!

Yelp
The Ka'awa Loa is as good as it gets. It was the the combination of wonderful laid back private atmosphere, ideal Kona location, excellent healthy food, as well as great restaurants close by. Mike and Greg are wonderful hosts and their coffee is the best of the several brands I took home with me. They set up the BBQ grill so one night we prepared our local fresh fish and vegetables and ate on the covered balcony with its beautiful views overlooking the Kona coast at sunset. Our recent stay here is worthy of a true 5 star rating. I have traveled the world and found the Ka'awa Loa to be a gem.

Yelp
What a wonderful Hawaiian getaway! My husband and I stayed here in December and we are so glad we did. Greg and Michael made us feel like guests in their home, not a hotel. We stayed 5 days and we had a truly enjoyable, relaxing time. We stayed in the main house which has an enormous wrap-around lanai (we spent the majority of our time there overlooking the Kealakekua Bay), beautifully decorated rooms, and gorgeous views everywhere you look. The rooms had a private half-bath with a shared full bath including tub and shower, but forget that--use the outdoor lava showers! And definitely take a turn in the tree-swing hanging from the giant mango tree! The confirmation emails Greg sent made me feel welcome even before we arrived. He included excellent directions that made finding the B&B very easy. Once we made our way up the steep driveway, we were greeted by Betty (the resident pup) and Michael, who settled us in, gave us a quick tour of the house and made some excellent dinner recommendations. The next morning we woke up to the most delicious breakfast I could imagine (Michael is a wonderful cook!) which included fresh fruit straight from the plantation. It was so enjoyable to sit on the lanai, sipping Kona coffee and fresh mango juice, while overlooking the coastline. We were in heaven. The B&B is conveniently located near plenty of sights and activities and Greg and Michael were always ready with suggestions for things to do. Since this was our first vacation in a couple years, we really wanted to relax so a couple nights we stayed in, read books, and cooked our dinner in the open kitchen. It felt so homey and I wished we lived there for real! I was so sorry to leave at the end of our trip because Greg and Michael made us feel so comfortable, welcome, and relaxed. I look forward to returning to their beautiful B&B sometime (hopefully soon)!

Yelp
True aloha here. This place is paradise. Breezes blowing as you overlook the bay. We didn't want to leave. The breakfasts were delicious. Fresh fruit and baked goods. There's a jacuzzi and sauna. Always someone to talk story and share some laughs. This is the only place I want to stay on the big island.

Yelp
Good rates, awesome outdoor showers, lovely views, amusing mango trees, great attention to detail, and the property smells amazingly day and night. Minus one star for the thirty-day cancellation policy. Thirty days. In the confirmation email the proprietors "highly advise trip insurance to cover all of your prepaid lodging." No one would travel if that became a trend.

Yelp
It was a couple years ago that we stayed here, but re-reading the review I wrote back then for my blog makes me want to go back: "We're going back there, and I recommend you go there, as well. We didn't realize how much there would be to do there, or else I think we would have planned more of our stay around the immediate vicinity rather than driving back to Kona. We're going back because we fell in love with the place (almost as much as the island itself), and because we want to explore the local area, though we plan to do so in a rental car (convertible) so that I'm not mistaken for Lono." http://lefthandrob.blogspot.com/2009/08/kaawa-loa-plantation-bed-breakfast.html

Yelp
WOW Our first trip to hawaii and did we pick well!!! Everyone Michael, Gregory, Hanna (to lovely for words!) We where all welcomed warmly and made to feel comfortable right away! The coffee is something to behold! And Hanna, must surly be an angle sent directly from heaven! We ended up needing help with directions, dry cleaning, flowers etc.... The owners where not only knowledgable and had many useful recommendations. But even with all that, it's the views and peaceful surroundings that make this our new number 1 vacation destination. We would probably come back just to see Hanna if lava destroyed the BnB view. You can't go wrong with this place

Yelp
My husband and I were engaged at Ka'awa Loa and had such a wonderful time there that we decided to rent the entire property for 1 week for our wedding two years later. I could easily write a book about all the amazing experiences we had during our wedding week and all the gracious actions and professionalism that Greg, Michael and Hannah provided. Firstly, all communications prior to our stay with Greg were positive and helpful as we were planning for our arrival. The place is set up well for a large group. When we stayed with other guests during our engagement, we felt completely relaxed and found plenty of space on the large porch and throughout the house to be on our own. The house was clean with fresh flowers and beautiful art and objects around to give it a warm and inviting feel. The aesthetic is classic and quality, don't think grandma's house with nicknacks--it couldn't be further from it. The house has a comfortable elegance that is easy to slip into and enjoy as your own. We stayed in the suite which was large, comfortable and peaceful. Fresh flowers and birds chirping and breezes--it was sublime. Greg was available throughout our stay whenever we had questions or needed help. I was amazed by their attentive, helpful professionalism. We look forward to returning again and again. I've been fortunate to have traveled to many places, some of the most beautiful spots on earth, and this place is truly a gem.

Yelp
This place really is as good as it gets. Easily 5+ stars. We wished we had booked more days here, but the two were divine. 1) They are extremely accommodating. We got in pretty late, as we were spending the day exploring, and instead of insisting that we check in earlier, they left a nice, personalized note explaining where everything was (we ended up getting in around 10pm). The note itself was fantastic - and it was a note! - I can imagine their typical/normal check-in policy is even better. 2) They are very personable, friendly, and warm. The type of people that you want running a bed and breakfast. 3) They were also very knowledgeable about the area. Gave great tips on where to go and the easiest way to get there (which is quite nice, since the Big Island is indeed...big). 4) Breakfast was sooooo good. Lots of variety - from pancakes one day to banana bread the next, eggs, fresh fruit, amazing coffee. I believe they grow their own coffee. Everything is extremely fresh. 5) The rooms are great. The decor is lovely. Simple without being plain. Very tasteful and warm - relaxing. Beds are comfortable, there is plenty of space. Bathrooms were clean. In fact, the entire property was impeccable. 6) The price is oh so right. Very reasonable and you get your money's worth, plus some. I've stayed at places triple this price and there is no comparison: this place has it all for a very reasonable price. 7) Enough community/friendly banter, but still room to do your own thing and come and go as you please. Some of the other guests were lounging about and enjoying a lowkey day on the plantation, while others weren't seen much (we fall in the latter category). Either way, service was the same and the overall experience was A+. 8) Perhaps the best part? They are a gay-friendly establishment. Kind of sad that this even has to go into a review in the year 2012, but it's worth noting. They are friendly - plain and simple. Friendly people with a fantastic B&B and we cannot wait to return. Overall, I would highly, highly recommend this place. Can't wait to go back. Thanks Greg and Michael!

Yelp
This is a very special place and so glad we s found it. Michael Greg and Hannah were such gracious hosts. We awoke to fresh estate grown coffee, an array of tropical fruits and homemade breakfast with views of the bay from the wrap around lanai. Michael and Hannah were a wealth of information about the area. They made us feel at home and I look forward to staying here again.

Yelp
Had a lovely stay at Ka'Awa Loa! It really felt like home after the first day or two, and by the time we left a week later, we really did not want to leave! The breakfast was always amazing, and Michael or Greg were always helpful with recommendations and good humor, inquiring at breakfast how our day was, and providing useful tips for the next days' adventure. They were perfect hosts. The pictures of the property cannot possibly do the place justice. The grounds are lush, and in quiet evenings on the lanai, you could easily believe you were transported to paradise! The house itself is fresh and updated but still maintains an original charm.

Yelp
One word: Heaven! Our stay at Ka awa Loa was a highlight of our honeymoon. The property is gorgeous and more importantly the owners and staff are so kind and welcoming. The breakfasts were fantastic and the lanai...wow! Very convenient to some of the world's best snorkeling spots which we enjoyed almost every day.

Yelp
We recently had the pleasure to stay at this B&B during our cycling trip around Hawaii. It really was the highlight of our stay. First of all the house is gorgeous and fantastically appointed with art and furnishings that are visually appealing as well as serene. The setting is sublime....overlooking a beautiful stretch of coastline that you can see from the hot tub and lanai that has a very private feel which is great as there is an outdoor shower and sauna too. The owner Greg is just a wonderfully kind person who is very attentive to anything that you may need and there really is a feel that "his home is your home". Guests are allowed access to laundry facilities and the well stocked kitchen to cook if desired. As we rolled in on bicycles Greg made sure we had food and everything that we needed...he even arranged for a masseur to come and give me a massage on the lanai....it was very private and discreet despite being outdoors and was just a wonderful experience. The breakfast the next morning was amazing and included blueberry waffles, turkey sausage and lots of fantastic fruit choices. We would have been happy to stay in this spot for a week and plan to definitely return for an extended stay. We have travelled quite a bit and consider this B&B to be one of the best that we've found anywhere.

Yelp
All good. All Pros no cons at this wonderful Ka'awa Loa Plantation B&B B&B. This is how B&Bs should be done. From the moment you a arrive until the moment you depart, Michael & Greg make sure you feel welcome and that your needs are met. The have a large beautiful Plantation style house with a huge veranda with Chairs and tables, and a large open kitchen open to clients. The buffet breakfasts are mouth wateringly good. There is enough food variety that vegetarians would have no problem eating - just let them know. They have water toys and towels too, and can direct to just about everything on the Island. There is an international mix of guests which makes it even more interesting! We will return.

Yelp
We spent three wonderful weeks at Ka'awa Loa Plantation, and on the first day we fell totally in love with the place and the people. Ka'awa Loa is a delight with respect to everything connected with what makes for great vacation lodging: the comfortable rooms, the inviting living room and kitchen, the wrap-around lanai, the luscious plateau overlooking the coast, and the owners and staff--who clearly delight in providing a home away from home for their guests. The breakfast is sumptuous, with everything one could possibly want in a healthy, hearty, delicious breakfast, and varies daily, and Michael, Greg or Hannah (the best hosts ever!) bake a cake or cookies every afternoon for when their guests return from adventures. After snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, zip-lining, etc., we would say: "Let's go home"--where home meant Ka'awa' Loa. Absolutely our best vacation ever!

Yelp
Such a wonderful treat! We were greeted by Michael with a cold mango juice and full tour of the grounds. The rooms are spacious and the beds very comfortable with amazing attention to detail from the house to the grounds. The owners are inviting and friendly and full of all the local information to send you out exploring. The breakfasts are full of local fruits and vegetables, breads, and coffee accompanying a warm dish. There are million dollar views of the bays below from the main house and porch, and easy access to most of the west island, coffee plantations, and Kona airport. We also met people from all over Europe during our stay. I still can't get over the price for a room, such a small price to pay for all of this! Bonus for the outdoor lava rock shower, hot tub, and sauna. They also have all the beach supplies you would need for a fun day out including towels, snorkel gear, umbrellas and coolers. You would never get all of this at one of the Mega hotels on the beach. We couldn't have asked for a better way to wrap up our vacation on the big island.

Yelp
Ka'awa Loa! Take Us Away! We just spent a wonderful 10 days on the Big Island starting and ending up at this wonderful B&B which very quickly felt like a home away from home - (except much more stunning and tranquil than our real home... ;) For us, the location, the ambiance, the accommodations and food, and most specially the delightful, generous owners made our visit really spectacular. If you're looking for a dramatic and heavenly vista that you can have (almost) all to yourself, in a place that is quiet, lush, off the main tourist path just far enough, but convenient to some of this wonderful island's best snorkeling and areas with character - look no further. Delicious fruit grown on the premises, comfy tastefully decorated rooms and main lodge, full breakfasts with strong coffee, help and suggestions for whatever you want your itinerary to be... we just didn't want to leave. Thank you! We can't wait to return!

Yelp
Please note in the response from the owner, he is referencing an incorrect reservation. We did search all the closets and only found cleaning and food supplies. The bed, while not 'tailored' to our liking should have not had a plastic covering, as if for children who may have accidents. And I did not and can not attest to the quality of the food, which is why I only listed what my husband ate. I do appreciate the owner taking the time to comment, although not completely accurate in his information (since he was referencing another reservation, probably just a minor mistake). It does show he cares. Still, my initial comments stand as written.

Yelp
I've stayed at many a B&B and this is, hands down, the best one I've ever stayed at. This gigantic plantation house is open and airy. The delectable breakfasts are almost -- almost -- too beautiful to eat. The hosts are hilarious and full of information about the best places to go. Between the expansive view of the ocean down the hill, the outdoor showers with flowers and moss growing along lava stones, the zillions of geckos sitting next to you as you sip your morning tea, the abundance of fresh fruit growing everywhere... it's as close to paradise as it gets. If you're ever in this area, it's your loss if you don't stay here. Seriously.

Yelp
This is a magical hideaway. Once you are there, you won't want to leave. So on my last trip that's exactly what I did: Stayed put for 8 glorious days. Greg & Michael are extraordinary hosts; welcoming, helpful, engaging, present, but never intrusive. Their plantation environment is relaxing and quiet. The expansive views from the property are breathtaking! Their Kona coffee simply delicious and breakfasts are hearty and yummy. It just doesn't get any better than this. Book your visit right away!
