Family-friendly outdoor activities in Hong Kong to thrill your kids

"A conservation and education centre in the Tai Po district where children can encounter animals such as pigs, palm civets, leopard cats, parrots and owls, wander walking trails and themed greenhouses (orchid and cactus), and take part in hands-on nature activities at an Art House—examples include woodblock printing and natural tree-ring printing—plus treasure hunts and other family-friendly programs." - Joy FangandCraig Sauers

Great place to connect with nature. As the world gets hotter and hotter due to Climate Change, this place offers such a peaceful and cool escape for those who work in the city center.

A truly stunning botanical garden, where the streams and waterfalls, the valley, and a diverse array of trees and plants blend together into one harmonious landscape. What an incredible legacy left by Sir Kadoorie and Lord Kadoorie! I participated in the meditation program "Walking in Peace 2025" here. We practiced various forms of meditations -- including sitting meditation, walking meditation, qigong, mindful eating. I enjoyed every part of the experience - strolling in silence along the beautiful paths beside the streams and waterfalls, meditating atop the hill at sunset, and ending the day with dessert on the rooftop after dinner. We even saw monkeys and a porcupine crossing the road on the way down the campus. My heartfelt thanks to Ven. Ngawang Tenzin, the dedicated staff, and all the wonderful participants for making this such a meaningful and enriching experience.

We came here in a big group and stayed mostly at the bottom part where the zoo is. It was a fun day out for the kids, seeing the flamingoes, turtles, eagles and muntjac deer. It was a really hot day, so we did not go up the mountain as we already worked up a sweat moving around foot hills. We found some relieve from the heat when we entered the heavily air-conditioned Art House. As we headed towards the exit, we paid the gift shop a visit and found a good range of cold canned drinks for sale at super-market prices (without the usual mark-up at tourist attractions). There are shuttle buses that would take people up the hill for some bush walking but that would be for another day!!

Love it so much! Love the plants and animals. The happiness of being surrounded by trees is beyond what words can describe.

What a beautiful place to spend the day! You can pay an additional fee for a bus ride to various spots in the hills and enjoy an approximate 90 minute hike down, taking in the spectacular views along the way. There’s an option to catch the bus along the route to return to the gardens, but if you want to ride the bus up again, you must pay at the front entrance. There’s so much to see and do, so be sure to scan the QR code at the entrance for a detailed map of the area. Perfect for all ages, and well worth the reasonable entrance fee. Spectacular!

A really lovely place with very friendly and knowledgeable staff who speak Cantonese and English. We had an indigo dyeing workshop with Benjamin which was brilliant. Even with the shuttle bus around the site be prepared for some hiking and very steep walks. You could easily spend an entire day there as the farm is huge. We were there in January so some of the paths and locations were closed but there was still lots to see.

A lovely place to enjoy the rural area while the weather is still cool. There are two hiking routes to choose from: the longer one covers the upper, middle and lower part of the farm while the short one covers the lower area. Families with young kids are suggested to take the shuttle bus (tickets available at the entrance) to visit the stops for some sight seeing then hike from the middle area back to the entrance. *** For those who plan to drive there, it’s best to reserve parking online prior the visit or you may end up not having a parking spot and there’s no alternative parking available in the area.

Very well maintained park and the guide we had was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the park as well as the animals that were there. Learnt a lot about local HK fauna and flora.

Yelp
I love Kadoorie farm-- a beautifully maintained Botanic garden and working farm with stunning hiking trails. A great place to take kids on the weekend to learn about plants and animals, and for anyone else who enjoys the outdoors for miles of hiking trails winding through fruit orchards, orchids among other plants native to HK and Guangdong. Don't miss out on the pigs and garden centre (I should have picked up my herbs BEFORE they all sold out at 4pm). Needless to say, the $20 admission and journey to the New Territories is well worth it!
