A quick guide to Penang’s street food - SilverKris

"A theatrical take on char koay teow, this charcoal-fired wok dish tosses supple prawns, cockles, scrambled egg, crunchy bean sprouts, fishcake and Chinese chives with sambal belacan and lard, producing smoky, umami-rich noodles. The experience includes watching the boss lady—famous for her red beret and safety goggles—attack the wok as charcoal sparks fly; expect about an hour’s wait for this show-and-food pairing." - SilverKris

Google
The char kway teow used to be good, but now the taste has become quite ordinary — nothing special or worth coming back for. However, the oyster omelette tastes better than the CKT.

I don't mind the hot environment.. the busy shop. But the food is important, and it's horrible. Ordered 2 chow kuay tiao, one spicy one not spicy for my child. The spicy one can clearly see it swimming in red oil. There is no cockles and the kuchai is not even cooked, still raw. Only redeeming factor is the big prawn. After eating it felt like vomiting from the excess oil. The nonspicy one is.... Spicy. For young children it matters a lot. It is also slightly burnt, can taste the burnt kuay teow. I'm sadden by this horrible restaurant. Do not come. And it's not cheap, rm13 per plate.

The shrimps is big, tastes normal. Price consider above average. You can order opposite shop food to eat inside.

Just a novelty with ahma in red samsui woman cap frying kway teow. Don't find it tasty, as there are no cockles and I'm still a fan of the black kway teow. Staff were also not very friendly, as with many of the F&B establishments, not sure why. Only highlight was that the prawns were huge and quite fresh.

Came here to try this stall CKT. For me taste wise is acceptable, good for a plate of CKT, but hub doesn’t like the strong salty taste in the food. We both think it is over priced for a normal plate like this cost rm13. There are many other as good but lower.

If you like you Char Kway Teow with pork lard and little bits of crackling, this is the place to go. Was recommended to try this place by our grab driver and was it worth it making our treck to come here. The CKT was worth it and also the satay chicken skewers too. The fruit juices were all freshly sqeezed too. Aside from the food the service was mediocre, server felt like he didnt like his job but overall I guess thats what you'd expect here in Penang. Ill be back next time.

Google
A plate of fried kway teow for 13 Ringgit! The taste is decent, but the portion is very small... Although the prawns are big, they don't feel fresh. The dishes are all washed on the ground next to the drain. This is the first and also the last time I will visit.

Yelp
I went to Penang for a short vacation and was reading through the blogs and i starting to plan my food trail for this trip. Penang Char Kway Teow is the main highlight as it's listed as one of the famous local dish. We drove down to visited this aunty in red hat and we managed to park our car next to the restaurant for maybe 2 to 3 ringgit. We reach around mid afternoon and the place is full of people and we manage to secure a seat. Took a glance at the red hat aunty frying the Char Kway Teow near the street and she looks very focus on it. We got a seat in the restaurant and the aunty took our others for drink and you can place your order from other stall down the street. You need to place your Char Kway Teow order in front. We order 2 big plates of the Char Kway Teow and it's has the wok taste and it's not too bad for me. The taste is so different from our singapore Char Kway Teow as our is black in colour. As for Penang Char Kway Teow they fry Kway Teow into pieces. Therefore you can eat it with spoon instead. It's worth to go for a visit and try it.

Yelp
Our fave 2 sisters char kway teow at Heng Huat Cafe, Jalan Selamat. There was a rumour that it became 2 brothers. That's not true. There is a man frying too and someone said it is the woman's son. Other Sister no longer helping at the stall. Super duper crowded today. One tour bus came along after we arrived. Thank goodness we got there first and managed to secure a table very quickly. We ordered the RM10 plates. They were small plates. It was very nice but not super. I had expected it to be super. Ordered the bua long long green coloured drink. Not as good as before. A little diluted today and cup size shrank too. Mostly ice inside that small cup.

Yelp
Char kuey teow is very famous. Huge prawns in the noodle. Limited supply daily. Normally needs to queue up for order especially after working hours and weekend. Coffee is very smooth and "kao". Recommended place for tea time... Char kuey teow costs RM10 per plate.

Yelp
For rm$10 it's twice the price and I think overrated this time I tried it was ok I think it's declined over the years. There better and cheaper Cha Kway teow in Penang.
