I stopped by twice on one afternoon. Kaffeeothek serves top-notch, single origin specialty coffee prepared with skill and care, in a warm, tidy and charming site on the Stadtplatz. The staff members are lovely, welcoming, and eager to talk coffee. The assortment of coffee beverages is admirable and reflects the knowledge and skills of the staff; in addition to Viennese-style drinks, international espresso drinks are served, including the flat white and cortado, which can be hard to find.
The selection of coffees varies daily and includes highly-rated specialty roasts from roasters such as Gardelli of Italy and Wildkaffee. You can buy beans here, from a wide selection of specialty roasters. In addition to this, Kaffeothek deals in a surprising variety of coffee equipment; I noticed Comandante grinders and articles from Hario on the shelves.
I can testify to the excellent preparation of the espresso. By the standards of third wave coffee culture, a lot of espresso in Austria tends to be over-extracted, but on my two trips, the drinks here were perfect: smooth, balanced, and showing their varietal character.
Wels is a much richer city for having this unique gem, and in such a beautiful place as the Stadtplatz. Many bigger cities do not anything quite like this!
