Traditional Crafts at Risk of Extinction Find a New Lease on Life With Travelers

"Kanazawa offers hands-on workshops with master artisans, including visits to ceramic and gold leaf makers, embroiderers, and silk dyers. The program demonstrates that traditional crafts can still be a viable way to earn a living, as shown by a kaga yuzen artist selling a luxury kimono to a visitor."

Wonderful experience. We learned that Kaga-yuzen is a traditional silk dyeing technique & is characterized by five basic colours - indigo, crimson, dark green, ochre & purple. Took part in the stencil dyeing workshop & brought home our handmade tote bag souvenir 😁

This is perfect if you need a little fun break! Head to the basement for the creative workshop. Even without Japanese you'll be fine, since they can show what to do. You make little design on handkerchiefs, tote bags, etc. Had so much fun and it turned out really cute. So far my favourite souvenir.

The Kaga Yuzen Kimono Center is worth visiting if you are in Kanazawa and are interested in arts and fashion. This small museum showcases the traditional art of Kaga-Yuzen, a fabric dyeing, originating in the Edo period, which is characterised by its distinctive use of colour and vivid intricate patterns. The process involves nine stages of hand-dyeing the silk, using five colours: indigo, crimson, ochre, dark green and royal purple. Now I'm not really into fashion, my wife is, but even I can appreciate the level of skill and creativity on display here. Apart admiring all the amazing kimonos exhibited here they also run craft workshops in the basement. We both tried our hand at doing some stencil work on a tote bag which surprisingly, at least for me, turned out really good. They also have a small shop near the work bench areas, selling distinctive, locally made items. If you have kids I'm sure that they would enjoy making their own Japanese souvenirs just as much as we did.

Beautiful kimonos on display. You can see the history of Kanazawa’s kimono art and even take a photo posing as an artist ;) their shop downstairs has a wide range of goods, something for everybody. I haven’t tried the dyeing experience, but there is a lot of space and an array of different types of products that you can decorate.

I was able to try dyeing on a canvas bag using 5 layers of stencils. It was fun and I love my bag!

Tried to coloring a white fabric for the first time, a pleasing cultural experience for me. Tourist can get this type of cultural experience at affordable price. They can bring their work to home too.

This was truly amazing! Upstairs you can (for a small entrance fee) view some incredibly beautiful kimono and other Kaga-Yuzen artworks! In the basement you can try your hand at dying stuff yourself. The staff is really helpful and it is both fun and a great learning experience. You can also purchase artworks made by Kaga-Yuzen artists. Definitely would go again and recommend!

I went with a friend and we made some mini tote bags, it was fun and the staff were super friendly! Definitely recommend if you’re in the area, there’s kimono wearing too and a museum!
