How to Plan the Perfect Honeymoon on Maui

Google
As expected, this is a small island airport, but it still has all the stores and services you need to make it a great starting point for your Maui adventures. Like many others have mentioned, it features an excellent tram service that takes you directly to the rental car facilities. We left our rental car in the public parking lot for one day while we visited the Big Island and ended up paying a steep $36 the next day. Another helpful tip is that there’s a Walmart just a 5-minute drive from the airport, perfect for stocking up on water, juices, fruits, snacks, and sweets to make your road trips around the island even more enjoyable, such as the Road to Hana. What really set this airport apart compared to others was the outstanding service we received from Monica at United Airlines, along with a very friendly senior security officer on the day of our departure. Thank you so much, Monica, for making our check-in so smooth, hats off to you!

Google
I travel a lot, but this airport is one of the most relaxed in the world! Old but clean with a nice charming character.

Google
A lot of the walkways and passages are outdoor and full of birds. Be ready to sweat! 😂 Also the stores seem to close around 5-6pm so if you're traveling during the evening then you're going to be hungry. Or you can pay ~$20 for some Burger King. Beyond that it's a decent airport.

Google
This is one of those classic airports, showcasing vintage tram service. We had a rental car, so we took their tram to reach it. It was wonderfully retro and easy to navigate. Inside, the airport offers plenty of food options—from Burger King to Hawaiian local cuisine and various pizza shops. It's a small and charming airport that takes you back in time.

Google
I’m giving 4 stars because it’s still in Hawaii and has that Hawaiian vibe. Plus it has all the stuff you want and can expect in a relatively small airport. Decent food and shops. Bright and airy. And two Priority Pass lounges. Now, both lunges are sub-par compared to other airports, but at least they got ‘em! The tram to car rental system is good, quick, and well organized. The airport is easy to get in and out of. And they have all the major airlines you’d likely use. Aloha!

Google
This airport is small, but still great place. I took SFO to Maui and maui to SFO it was really chill United Airlines. I took them. It was really nice. Very small airport though that’s the only thing. got out of that airport quick.

Matt P.

Google
Simple airport to navigate with a great tram system that takes you to the rental car area. The terminal, and bathrooms along the way, were clean and we walked to a central hub that had a Starbucks and other shops. Heading down the baggage claim was easy to find and our bags were already coming out by the time we arrived. We rented a car from Hertz so we jumped across the street to catch the tram that took us to the rental car area. It was maybe a 5 minute ride, at most.

Zane Z.

Google
Not the best airport if you don’t have TSA precheck. The only area to the outside is not but can get really hot while waiting in line. It is a smaller airport but can get very busy during the day.

Yelp
I think it's been more than 20years that I've been to the island of Maui. My younger years my sister and I use to go to Lahaina for the summer to stay with my grandparents. Of course no Lahaina due to the devastation of the wild fires . Anyway this airport has change a lot . So right outside of baggage claim there's a tram that will take you to the rental car center . Of course it was out of service when I arrived so the walk was about 8-10 minutes from one end of the airport to the other . What a work out I wasn't expecting to exercise while I'm on vacation lol . The only part hasn't change is the four way split in the middle of the airport where there's all the shops and Starbucks. Just also found out if you're walking back to the terminal from the Rental car center there's no way to cross over to the check in side . You'll need to wait for the Tram gates to open so you can walk across Maui No ka oi

Yelp
Kahului Airport (OGG) is the main airport coming in and going out of the island of Maui. It receives both overseas and inter-island flights mainly from Oahu. Fun fact: the airport code OGG pays homage to the aviation pioneer Jimmy Hogg who flew planes on what is now known as Hawaiian Airlines. The interior decor was a little outdated and reminded me of the airport at Honolulu if you've ever been. However it was smaller so we got through it pretty quickly both in and out. Even though it felt old, they use facial technology instead of a boarding pass when going through TSA which sped things up. If you're picking up a rental car, you can either take a tram two stops to the rental car center or walk about 8 minutes.

Yelp
No A/C until you get past security, so be prepared to sweat a bit. The inspection scan is one more stop before ticketing, but that goes quick. Don't try to steal anything from the island and you'll be okay. Everything at this airport shuts down early. The stores by 8:30-9 PM and the one lounge even earlier. Also, don't wait like me and expect to buy the Mauna Loa macadamias. They were nowhere to be found, in Hawaii of all place. I waited about 30 minutes for my bag, which must have found itself on island time like the workers. P.S. The is the airport where the opening scene of White Lotus season 1 was filmed.

Yelp
Quite the change leaving a pressurized, AC airplane and arriving at OGG where it's warm and humid. Thankfully, nicely laid out and visible signage of where one needs to be. The usual shops and restaurants, but the bathroom is my first stop. Clean & secure. Helpful info brochures and maps for later. Frequent free tram to move people from the terminal and baggage claim to the car rental counters. Gets the job done. And besides, you've just arrived on Maui, no complaints here.

Yelp
Flew to Maui with my girlfriend's meetup group for a week on the island. Lax to OGG Kahului airport. OGG is a nice mid sized airport, comfortable, easy to navigate, and convenient. Relatively short lines for tsa screening and ticket counters (we checked bags for the trip, bringing snorkeling gear and other items too big for carrying on) Concourse is pretty straightforward go through screening and continue to your gate. Train takes you from the rental car return to the ticket counters and continues to baggage claim. Much easier and less confusing than Honolulu airport. I prefer to fly directly to Maui when it's my Hawaiian destination. Mamava lactation pod for breastfeeding mothers is a nice amenity.
google avatar

Yelp
Standard airport. Maybe a bit small for the amount of people going through, but the tram is adorable!
google avatar

karina k.

Yelp
They're very adorable and manageable Airport. Everything is easy to get to and the signs are very clear. The rental car trolley is right across the street. It's only an eight minute walk or five minutes by trolley to the rental cars. It's very clean and even if the airport is not super modern but it's very clean and organized and efficient. And the staff here are very friendly and kind and not rude at all.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't listen to the haters. I'm giving 4 stars because it's still in Hawaii and has that Hawaiian vibe. Plus it has all the stuff you want and can expect in a relatively small airport. Decent food and shops. Bright and airy. And two Priority Pass lounges. Now, both lunges are sub-par compared to other airports, but at least they got 'em! The tram to car rental system is good, quick, and well organized. The airport is easy to get in and out of. And they have all the major airlines you'd likely use. Aloha!

Yelp
Fairly easy to navigate this airport. It's pretty cool that the airport feels Hawaiian. The workers were pretty chill until we tried to bring pineapples as another carry-on lol I guess the extra pineapple carry-on is no longer in effect or was a myth lol

Yelp
Kahului Airport on the island of Maui is my favorite airport in Hawaii. Actually, it may be my favorite airport in the United States. It is nice and small. Love the fact that there has never been any crowds or long lines at TSA whenever we are here. It is very easy to navigate the airport because the signage is great. Heck, even the Men's Restroom sparkled with cleanliness. Cleanest public Men's restroom in the United States of America!!! My wife said the Women's restroom was very clean too. Awesome job maintaining Kahului Airport (OGG) folks!!!
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
Im gonna give this airport a 4-star and some love simply based on the fact that we are kn a small island and the meaning of ALOHA doesnt start or stop when you leave, its a mindset. Sure it can be better improved and more organized but again slow down, practice kindness and be more patient. They will figure it out someday but we all dread airports in general just like a doctors appointment. Next time you decide to give it a 1-star or zero just remember you live in a world of abundance and being in long lines is temporary, memories at the beach drinking umbrella cocktails are forever. Mahalo and E Komo Mai.

Yelp
This Is such an easy airport to deal with. Curb pick up but no double parking. In and out with American. Really simple.
google avatar

Edryl L.

Yelp
Kahului Airport was a pleasant experience especially with the new policies in place of not having to take off shoes or belts! The staff have been helpful and patient (for the most part). With my most recent experience, the TSA line was HUGE and it took a while just to walk to the back; however, two ladies that were working steered us towards another TSA line without anyone it. If it weren't for them I probably would give this airport a 3/5. Kahului Airport has everything that you need. The restrooms are very nice and have a "one-stop-shop" sink (air dryer and soap per sink). Just be prepared to go through agricultural checks twice (one for check-ins and one for carry ons). Other than that, this is a decent airport. Have fun and safe travels!
google avatar

Yelp
the ADD at OGG I've had my first visit to Maui in nearly 10 years, and wanted to share a brief update about Kahului Airport: There is a newly constructed car rental center near the airport. I thought this was most convenient as all the rental car companies are now contained under one roof. A tram transports visitor arrivals to the car rental center.....or one may choose to walk. It's about an 8 minute walk (per posted signage) from the arrival station to the rental center. If you choose to take the tram to the rental center, you will first stop at "departure center" before your arrival. Upon your arrival at the center, follow the signs to your rental car company. When returning your vehicle, there is adequate signage directing drivers to the rental car center and specific rental company. BOTTOM LINE The new rental car center at OGG is a welcome improvement.

Roman P.

Yelp
Been to OGG for arrivals, lay overs and departures. Arrivals and layovers always were great. But for departures clearing TSA took forever. Come way early to make sure you have plenty of time to get on your flight. Felt like has way more people for a Tuesday morning than any other in Hawaii.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
There are birds trapped inside the air conditioned part of the gates screeching to get out and the airport personnel are doing nothing. Pitiful they aren't protecting Mailui wildlife.
google avatar

Kristi T.

Yelp
The airports in the islands are so sad lol. Two stars for the nice rental car facility. And the tram to and from it. The airport itself needs some work. Cute and lowkey vibe but it doesn't have much to offer. Also lots of outside space so it can get hot. Must be horrible when it's rainy..
google avatar

Yelp
6/2025 - from LIH-OGG, then OGG-KON: a cozy and comfortable airport that was easy to navigate. Loved the "Tolley" train to and from the car rental spot. I was able to use Clear to get through TSA quickly (yes, I'm the fool who let my GE expire a week before the trip. Ugh) but the overall line didn't look to bad. We were early enough for it to be a non issue. Food options are meh, the standard stuff. But we had breakfast at Nalu prior so we were very happy. I love all the water stations in all the airports (and hotels). Best benefit ever. All the people we have met have been incredibly kind and generous with information. I look forward to coming back to Maui.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
You are in Maui! What's there to not like! Lol The airport is pretty cleanly maintained. Pretty small, never there during the high season, but I can see it getting pretty packed full of tourists!
google avatar

Gina R.

Yelp
So I have a love hate relationship with this place being that many Sundays for over four years of my life I had to come here to fly to da dorms on Oahu for the Big K school on the hill... IYKYK Otherwise barring that part, glad Maui has an airport that can accommodate so many airline companies and direct flights. It's held up over the years, and I do like their bathrooms by the baggage claim pumping out cold AC with some of the nicest looking hotel bathroom stall doors for an airport.
google avatar

Margaret W.

Yelp
Really easy check in and access to gate. My husband is a bit handicapped and he made it through TSA without any problems at all. Gate was nearby and we breezed through.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
I thought we'd get to see forever But forever's gone away It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday... It was tough leaving the island. We had great times and will cherish the memories the kids, my wife and I had together. The airport is one of the smaller ones I've been to. Give yourself plenty of time to check your bags and get thru security. You also need to go thru USDA agriculture for your carry on bags and luggage; checked bags before entering the airport and the carry ons once you pass security. Once you're inside there isn't much. We grabbed food before going to the airport because the kids love chicken tenders from the C Fil-A. Bring empty bottles and you can refill your water. They had construction going on as well. There is a nursing station that looks like a space pod. Mahalo and A hui hou
google avatar

Cyn T.

Yelp
This airport doesn't make it easy for people who need a wheelchair to access it. You have to take your bags through agricultural inspection before you go to the ticket counter and the wheelchairs are far away. This makes it hard to drop off someone because some little man in a power trip will argue with you about leaving your car when all you're trying to do is get your disabled passenger dropped off. Curbside service is needed for your disabled passengers please.
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Crazy, snake-like baggage check-in lines, slow baggage check-in handling, and very limited dining options make this one of my least favorite airports. Sure, it's Maui, but why are they okay with visitors leaving the island with a bad taste in their mouth? We all want to support Maui, and especially Lahaina, but leeward demolition traffic due to the fires and OGG inefficiencies will surely come into play next visit.
google avatar

Elba G.

Yelp
The airport is pretty small. This is good if you're not interested in shopping around or dining at the airport before your travels. TSA is pretty standard for a smaller airport. I think a lot of people forget that the workers here are on ISLAND TIME. Please do not press your urgency on the locals that live here and know how to plan accordingly. If you're a anxious flyer or last minute boarder, you will miss your flight and you will struggle with time if you arrive with no time to spare.. TSA is slow and is going at island pace. Give yourself time to check in, go through TSA and walk to your gate. Also keep in mind that most people visiting from Hawaii are usually older and retirees. If you do want to eat or have some shopping, this airport is NOT it. I personally LOVE to have some entertainment options while I wait for my flight. I highly recommend eating beforehand to ensure you get a meal before a long flight. The options here are literally a coffee shop that has premade sandwiches or a little bar and grill that is overflowed.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
It's small, crowded, limited food options. The tram to rental cars is nice. Staff are nice and efficient. It's just ok.
google avatar

Pete T.

Yelp
Not overly impressed with the TSA at Kahului Airport. Arrived two hours early for our flight back to San Diego. The TSA lines were long! Really long! They snaked back and forth, zig-zagging the length of a football field. Super slow too. We were stressed about missing our flight. We made it to the gate with only about 10 minutes to spare prior to boarding. We both have terrible airport anxiety and that was just too close for comfort.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Small airport with sparse dining options. Despite its smallness it has a long walk from one side of the terminal to the other. The rental cars are accessed by a rail trolley which beats an airport bus. The gates are large so you do not feel cramped. For fun watch a wide body plane land on a very short runway.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
Nice quiet airport that welcomes you to Maui! Not too busy (except on holiday weekends).
google avatar

Paolo B.

Yelp
In terms of airports, it feels like you are going back in a Time Machine because the whole airport is showing its age. Flying in/out is pretty simple. The rental car area is a quick 5-7 minute walk from baggage claim or you can take the free tram. Our bags came out quick when we arrived and checking bags in on the way out was a quick process. It's very centralized and is in close proximity to shopping and of course, Costco. The food options here are very limited, with some fast food spots, pizza, and airport prepared sandwiches. None of it is particularly appetizing but when the options are minimal, it does what it needs to do. We grabbed food and brought it to the airport which is something we'd do again. Overall, it's an airport that doesn't have a ton of amenities so come prepared with snacks and avoid those airport inflated prices.

Tahdra G.

Yelp
Terrible airport. TheTSAs lines are not only too slow and I mean really slow but they're not even organized correctly? OR LOGICALLY. I was wearing swim shoes. Very common design and they said they looked up normal? So leave me take them off?? Then they decided to frisk me because I have a swimsuit on that had a rope and a plastic again to tide your waist hello? I'm in Maui wearing a swimsuit? That's abnormal? The only metal on me was the eyelets that the rope ran through. Should I then take out my swimmer and go naked? Well there's more but I'm tired of you in the living review for this place whenever you going back to Maui anyway place is awful nowadays on many levels
google avatar

Ao H.

Yelp
Check in to Hawaiian Air was seamless. Going thru TSA was horrible, confusing, and a mess. Not just long lines, but too many long lines with zero clear signage. Staff were robot like with robotic responses. And then there's the sneaky Clear people who get you with a hefty pay in to get past the long lines. What a scam.
google avatar

Devin B.

Yelp
OGG is a small airport but good lord it is slow as heck. Thankfully we left earlier and our flight was delayed. It took a total of 2 hours to make it from rental car drop off, to baggage drop and TSA security! Give your self plenty of time and don't forget to put your bags through the agricultural check point so you don't waste your time in line for bag drop.
google avatar

Thomas N.

Yelp
Whatever you think of this airport, if you're visiting Maui, it's your only choice. Been 25 years since I flew into this airport. Changed quite a bit. There is now a tram to the car rental center. Still one checkpoint, about 16 gates in one concourse. Nice food court. I like it. Beats the hell out of KAX, DFW, ATL, etc... I prefer small airports.
google avatar

Darylynn D.

Yelp
I forget how outdated Hawaiian airports are. I didn't see any seats with plugs, but they do have wall plugs. Once you arrive you can take the trolley to the car rental area or take a short walk. Since the airport is fairly small compared to my home airport LAX I find it easy to navigate through. Your bags must go through customs as you are coming from the islands into the mainland.
google avatar

Rashi T.

Yelp
Definitely small ,but pretty efficient nevertheless. Was able to check in and drop luggage and clear security pretty fast . Since our flight was a little later in the night ,not a lot of stores were still open but we were still able to check out a few and pick some souvenirs . The airport does need a little improvement because for such a touristy spot this sure seems a little beaten down.
google avatar

Elise B.

Yelp
Smallish airport that is easy to navigate. Going through security was a bit of a wait- I don't think they had enough people working it for the amount of people going through. Overall it was smooth for me other than a little bit of a wait to go through security.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
A-OK! I mean, I love Maui, but as far as airports go... well, this is just a stop on the way to the main attraction. The Kahului Airport is a smaller airport. There's some extra security for agriculture check ins but the rest of the check in process and desks are pretty standard. I've typically been able to move pretty quickly through. If you're renting a car, you can totally walk to the rental car area vs taking their tram. It's maybe a 10 minute walk. If you don't mind the wait and prefer the convenience, though, the tram is a good option. Not a ton of food options at this airport, so I would recommend eating before or packing some snacks. The airline lounge is small too and only stocked with small snacks and a soda fountain. There are a few souvenir stores in the airport in case you need to pick up any last minute gifts. Overall, it's an okay airport. Not the best, but gets the job done!
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
In recent years, there have been some major improvements to Kahului Airport, and the big one would be their consolidated car rental garage along with their tram that takes you from the terminals to the car rentals (and vice versa), though you still have the option to walk to and from the buildings. Gates are relatively easy to locate and get to. Of course, all the food options are super expensive (which is why I never buy airport food unless I absolutely have to). During the summer and peak periods, the airport can get really busy, so you should allow extra time to get to your gate.
google avatar

Berneta A.

Yelp
I haven't been to this airport in ages, and it's definitely leveled up with more food options and snack spots. It's small, easy to navigate--which is awesome because my flight was delayed a ton, and they kept playing musical chairs with our gates. At one point, even the gate crew don't know we changed again. Since I spent most of my day here, my one request would be: more charging stations! Some outlets didn't work, and people were circling around working ones like piranhas eyeing a fresh steak. Even at midnight, this place was buzzing. Honestly, it's not a bad place to have a layover--just make sure you juice up your phone on the plane!
google avatar

Sallie R.

Yelp
In my opinion, I actually like this small airport. Always easy for us to navigate through without getting lost. As we landed, took the tram to car rentals. My kids love any kind of train or tram rides perfect for them to enjoy. Wasn't very far at all about a 5 minutes ride or you can simply just walk a short distance. When it was time for us to go back home, checking in with TSA was a breeze. Ecstatic there was a separate line for disabled travelers which made it easier for us and my special need son. There wasn't a lot of options as far for restaurants and gift shops which was the downside. Plus everything was super expensive. Other than that, we easily go in out of this airport.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
Twas the first time coming to this airport as we came here for the honeymoon! It's a small and cute airport and nice and clean even in the bathroom! I like it a lot! Keep up the good work!
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
Nothing says welcome to Maui like the airport. No real complaints here as it's a pretty small local airport. It is outdated, but it does the trick. Easy and fast getting to the exit and getting an Uber ride to your hotel. For our flight back to Honolulu, the TSA is immediately at the front upon entering and the gate is a short walk.
google avatar

Travis P.

Yelp
I flew in and out from this airport in Maui. Overall pretty normal experience. Was able to grab a car easily and also TSA was fairly fast. Whole process only took me 20 or so minutes to go through TSA and walk to my terminal.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
It's your basic island airport. It very much reminds me of the airport in Kaua'i Open air hubs and arrivals and departures Closed terminals. The terminals are clean and basic but had a good vibe. I feel like most flights go off on time from here
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Kind staff. From agriculture inspection to tsa it was all good. Seats at the gates were comfortable. Restrooms were in good shape. Nice and clean.
google avatar

Gabrielle B.

Yelp
I really loved this airport. I love the open space, natural light and proximity to the outdoors. Although it's small there are plenty of great last minute gift shops here and places to eat.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
It's not a big airport but it feels well designed, easy to navigate, and uses the natural qualities of the area very well. There are many open areas that allow the breeze to enter and cool the building. That also helps the light value of the building interior. The inside gates are small but efficient. Check in and drop off is easy enough. There's a small train that takes you to rental cars if you're arriving.
google avatar

Terrence Y.

Yelp
Nice little airport, which is very convenient to the rest of Maui. It's a single level so it makes it very easy to navigate. Love the little commuter train that gets you to the rental car and parking structure.
