I ended up at Kais Restaurante Bar one evening after a walk along the riverside in Santos. The space is undeniably impressive — a beautifully restored old tram warehouse with soaring ceilings, soft candlelight, and reflections of water dancing on the walls. It immediately feels like a place meant for a special evening. I came alone and ordered the monkfish risotto. The texture was smooth, the plating elegant, but the flavor? Honestly, pretty average. For the price, I expected something more refined.
I went back a few days later with friends — one vegetarian, the other a meat lover. We ordered fish tacos, foie gras, and a burger. Everything looked great and the service was attentive without being overbearing, but once again, the food didn’t quite deliver. The burger, while cooked properly, lacked depth. The fish tacos were dry, and the foie gras felt overly rich without much balance.
The vibe is romantic and the staff know what they’re doing. But when the bill comes to around €40–50 per person, you start to feel like you’re paying more for the setting than for what’s on the plate. Kais is ideal if you’re looking for a beautiful space to impress a guest or mark a special occasion. But if you’re there for the food itself, especially with Lisbon’s many excellent dining spots, it might leave you wanting more.
