Beautiful castle ruins to visit, we rented some bikes in Dusseldorf and bikes along the Rhine to get here which was a lovely day trip. Worth the visit, there’s some other cool building to walk around and see in the area as well.

The ruins of this medieval imperial castle on the banks of the Rhine are one of the most atmospheric spots near Düsseldorf. Built in the 11th century, it once served as a residence for Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Even in ruins, the scale and presence of the site are impressive. It’s a very picturesque place: perfect for a peaceful walk along the river, exploring the old stone walls and arches, and enjoying the scenic views. Nearby, the charming historic town of Kaiserswerth offers cozy cafés and narrow cobbled streets. Highly recommended for history lovers or anyone looking to experience a touch of the past in a tranquil setting.

A really amazing place! The ruins of the Kaiserpfalz (imperial palace) date originally back to the early years of the 8th century when a monastery was built here by imperial grant. By the 11th century, a castle had been built here and later it was turned into a larger imperial palace. In 1172 Emperor Frederick Barbarossa made the place to the official customs point on the Rhine and expanded the fortifications. In the 18th century the palace was ruined after a battle in the war of Spanish succession. Really impressive ruins and amazing views.
