I'd say that Kaleo's Bar and Grill is one of the nicer places for dinner in the town of Pahoa. When we drove up to Kaleo's, there was zero street parking available. Fortunately, they have their own parking lot next door where a parking attendant will guide you to an open space to park your car (sorry if we're supposed to tip but we didn't have any cash on us. Also watch out for cats in the parking lot).
We were also fortunate to be able to get seated almost immediately. There was one table still available otherwise we would have had to wait. While we were eating, and the crowd died down, I noticed one family that came in and stood there waiting in line for a while but wasn't noticed by the staff in time so they ended up walking out in frustration. Just a reminder to everybody that times are tough and restaurants can be understaffed and overworked. Please give a little patience to the workforce.
For dinner, I opted for the Black and blue hamburger. That's my go to burger whenever I'm indecisive. I will say I was quite pleased. The French fries were perfect and the Volcano spiced with bacon & blue cheese was delicious. I think the volcano part wasn't that spicy so like usual, I added Tabasco to every bite of my hamburger. For the burger lovers out there, the medium rare is perfect for this burger.
My wife had the tempura fresh catch entrée. This dish comes with four large pieces of island fish, lightly battered, served with homemade tartar sauce and lemon. I had one piece and we still had to take one piece home with us. The fish was light, very fresh, and the outer batter was nice and crispy. We did end up asking for more tarter sauce as there's no way one little cup would suffice for that much fish.
For dessert, I ended up getting the Lilikoi cheesecake made with fresh passionfruit on an oreo cookie crust. This was also delicious and my wife said it was the best cheesecake she's ever had. Those are big words but she knows her cheesecakes.
Kaleo's seems a little on the pricey side for this small town so it seems like the customers that go there probably have good income, are tourists, or go there for special occasions. Or, just maybe, the food is good that it's worth it to keep going back.
The service is great, the food is great, the parking is adequate. I highly suggest you try this place out if you were in town. I know if we ever make it back here and we will go back again.
