The Shimla Kali Bari Temple is an old, ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is also known as Shyamala. It is hence also believed that the Shimla city is named after the goddess Shyamala. The Shimla Kali Bari Temple is located on the Bantony Hill, near Mall Road, beyond the Scandal Point. As the story goes, this temple was originally built in the vicinity of Rothney Castle on the Jakhoo Hill, in the year 1845, by a Bengali Brahmin Priest, Ram Charan Brahamchari but the British shifted the location of the temple to the Bantony Hill. The temple is run by a trust which was initially formed in the year 1902 and mainly consists of Bengali members . The idol of the main deity, Goddess Kali, is made of wood, painted blue. The temple is easily accessible from the Mall Road by walking but beware of monkeys in the area and the temple. There is another temple of lord Shiva within the precincts. Absolutely phenomenal maa Kali temple. Also called Shyamala devi, after whom Shimla is named. Very positive and energetic temple. Do try to attend one of the daily aartis, it's mesmerizing. The hill top temple view is also amazing. The presence of maa is evident there. Very beautiful place.

Kali Bari is not a commercial institute.It is more like Dharmasala than a hotel. One can get a room by paying 500/- for a day. There are some 40+ rooms for devotees.Dormetory facility is also available.One has to pay Rs 100/- for daily accomodation.Here no room service is available.Devotees can get 24 hrs hot water from out side the room.Tea, snacks, lunch & dinner can be obtained from canteen daily at a cheap rate.This is situated at high up in the hill & visiting Simla mall is easy for all. I found it quite nice at the given rates .
