Traditional Crafts Live On Through Chiang Mai's Emerging Artists

"Architect Achariyar Rojanapirom opened Kalm Village in Chiang Mai's Old City in the spring of 2021. It includes three boutiques stocking handwoven bamboo baskets and batik-printed shirts created with Hmong tribespeople from nearby Phayao province, an exhibition space with historical northern Thai textiles and modern crafts, and the Museum of Makers as a textile gallery and showroom for artists and designers."

This place is an absolute gem, offering a delightful mix of local artisan stores, a cozy coffee shop, and a serene library perfect for working or unwinding. The atmosphere is both inviting and inspiring, making it a great spot to explore and relax. On Sunday evening, I attended their yoga and sound healing session, which was truly a highlight. While booking online was impossible even a month in advance, I visited in person to secure my spot. The session costs 500 THB, and it’s absolutely worth it. The yoga instructor was excellent—his English was fluent, and he skillfully guided the class with variations for all levels, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and challenged. He also provided hands-on adjustments, enhancing the practice for each participant. The last 30 minutes were dedicated to sound healing, creating a magical atmosphere with soothing, harmonious vibrations. As the sun set, the gentle music and peaceful energy made for an unforgettable experience. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend this class for relaxation, mindfulness, and a deep sense of well-being.

Great architecture, great exhibitions, great coffee and food! A place where you can relax, enjoy the nice environment and escape the city life for a few hours. You can book Workshops, Yoga etc. over their website. They have a small library on the second floor of the coffeeshop with books in English too. The small galleries and shops have local products from local designers. If you're into architecture & design, this is the place for you!

Kalm Village is a cultural space built with intention. It’s calm without being hollow, minimal without being sterile, and deeply tied to Thai craftsmanship and tradition. If you’re into art, architecture, textiles, or just want to feel like you’re not consuming Chiang Mai on autopilot, this place is worth your time. The buildings are stunning with all reclaimed wood and handmade brick, designed in a way that respects both space and silence. There’s a library, a small museum, craft exhibitions, and a shop that actually stocks things made by real local artisans. I saw some reviews from people mostly fussy tourists whining about it not being lively or “worth visiting,” and honestly, I don’t think they understood what this place even is. If you’re looking for photo ops and iced coffee, there are a hundred cafés nearby. This isn’t that. That said, my only real critique: it does feel a little too polished. A bit curated for the white gaze. Still, it’s a good space. Just go in with clear eyes

Really is a CALM place☺️ Enjoyed walking through the galleries and shops with genuine Thai made products. Loved getting away from the hustle and bustle and crowds of Chiang Mai. If you’re feeling overstimulated then this is a lovely place to visit to get a dose of Thai culture in a peaceful setting and step away from the crowds for a little while whilst still being in town. There’s a restaurant and cafe, places to sit for free all throughout on the ground level and up on the balconies and if you don’t want to pay overseas prices to eat there’s a lovely hole in the wall serving up authentic northern Thai food just a few minutes walk away.

Wow. Just wow. This place is incredible. The architecture is so detailed and thought out. There are multiple stores with very unique items, cafes, and museums. Also multiple comfortable locations to sit and enjoy yourself for as long as you want. Personally I chose to read for 2 hours and it was so peaceful. There were a lot of people, though I’m so glad many people come to experience this. Finally the bathrooms are GORGEOUS. I rarely ever mention bathrooms in my reviews but this may have been the prettiest bathroom I’ve ever seen. Like Pinterest level beautiful. I’ll add some pictures :) You should definitely give it a visit!

Wow, this place is amazing. Their small shops, Café and small Museum is really created in an interesting way. They implemented a piece of Japanese woodworking style into the top roof structure you can see from all around the place. Give them a visit no entrance fee was needed when we there.
