If you've ever been on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and paid attention to the little details, you may have noticed the little lights flickering in the trees near the water. Well folks, these little flickering lights are supposed to be fireflies and the idea of small glowing / flickering bugs has always appealed to my inner child.
One of the things my "tour guide" brother-in-law said we are doing, is a trip to a firefly park. Wow, cool! I'm sure there are other firefly parks out there, but this is one the family told the driver to go to. An hour and a half drive later, we arrive. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kampung-kuantan-fireflies-park-kuala-selangor?select=Vfsb-qhf42Av7Xs3mAWScg
We walk up to the ticket window to buy our way in. You pay for a boat which will hold 4 people (it was 40 ringgit, but has since gone up to RM50 - about $14 US). Each ticket includes a drink and a local snack. Nice. We stand in line in the waiting area, reading all the signs on the walls about the fireflies. It turns out the fireflies gather in the mangrove trees to feed and flash to attract a mate. Very interesting stuff!
As these little bugs can only be seen doing It's thing at night, don't bother going there much before sunset. The best hours are from 7:30 pm until 10:30 pm when the park closes.
The time comes, we put on the life vests and 4 of us load into a boat. The guide pushes off and rows down the river into near total complete darkness, only the dim moon in the sky is lighting our way. It's a little unnerving at first, but eventually our eyes adjust to the darkness. After nearly 10 minutes, off in the distance we start to see the faint glow of the flickering bugs. We get closer and they are still not very bright, but still VERY NEAT to see! Our guide moves the boat very close to the mangrove tree where the little fireflies are and even reaches out and gently collects one of them in his hand. After a minute or so it starts to light up and blink in his hand. How awesome to see!
Unfortunately, due to the uncontrolled pollution from nearby factories along the river, the firefly population has been declining. Although there are still colonies of fireflies in the area, there are far fewer then there were 10 years ago. I'm very happy I was able to visit this firefly park and see the abundance of little glowing bugs that we did!
