25 Places to Really Bug Out

"A small number of firely species perform an astonishing collective trick: They light up as one. Tens of thousands of fireflies will blink in perfect unison for minutes, sometimes hours, at a time. Known as “sychronicity,” it is a somewhat mysterious phenomenon. Even though each firefly flashes according to its own natural rhythm, it also receives feedback from flashing lights nearby. This feedback loop, an example of the mathematical concept known as coupled oscillation, eventually leads to a humongous mass of simultaneously blinking fireflies. One of the best places in the world to see this magnificent display is in Kampung Kuantan, Malaysia. Sadly, over the last ten years the beetle has been disappearing from the region due to poorly managed tourism and river pollution. All is not lost, however. Thriving colonies can still be found in the Bagan Krian mangrove tracts, the Tanjung Piai mangrove regions, and the Cherating and Kemaman shorelines, among other places." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The best place in town to see fireflies! An incredible experience! They take you quietly down the river in a small boat (maximum four people) which makes the experience much more environmentally friendly. We recommend it and would definitely repeat! Much better than any other crowded tour!

We visited here on the way back to penang from KL. It was RM60 per boat for 4 people but they let us have 5 people cuz we're a family. It was nice and cold but scary even tho nothing bad happened. I wouldn't recommend for kids and senior but maybe calm adults. The fireflies were kinda small because it just rained that time. They let u on a boat, go to a bush about 500m away to see the fireflies in the water. The boat was paddling boat not engine. They provide you life jackets incase of emergency. It was scary at first but it became ok Scary cuz it was only available at night and the water was dark. Luckily it was a moon night , butthe boat driver say moon night worse cuz harder to see the fireflies

I loved this special experience—the night sky, the gentle breeze, and the twinkling fireflies. It was so quiet and peaceful, with only the faint sound of the oars in the water.

A trip to Kuala Selangor for the Fireflies park is a must if you’re going with kids as they can enjoy seeing the Fireflies in the darkness, Eagle feeding and Blue tears experience as well. Even the boat ride will be a fun experience for both adults and kids. Watch out for the weather conditions before you book tickets as it can play spoil sport. Have fun.

No information in the internet about the price and timing, Then, finally i found this at the entrance. 60RM for local, 100RM for forigner for one boat. The last trip is 22:30. All boat is with a rower. lots of fireflies. 20 min trip. it is just nice. 20 min is just good (it is like jungle cruse in the disney land). We are a group of 5 including 3 kids and the youngest one is 6 years old. They let us in together in one boat.

It is nice, you will see some fireflies on the trees. Make sure you are wearing mosquito repellent before going to this place.

Yelp
We went to the park via boat. Boat ride was run. Very fast. Tips: - Wear lots of bug repellant - Don't wear anything loose that can fly off during the ride there - It doesn't matter which side you sit on, but if you sit on the right side of the boat (facing the boat side), you will face the fireflies when it is darker We came here through a tour "Glittering Fireflies & Kuala Selangor Night Tour with Dinner" with Tour51. The fireflies was cool to see, though it was fast.

Yelp
I have never seen fireflies before. I think the only firefly that I have ever seen was the one in the Disney classic film "The Rescuers". I know....old..... Fortunately, that was quickly remedied with my visit to Kuala Lumpur. Kampung Kuantan Fireflies Park is in a remote a part of the city. I believe it was about 1.5 - 2 hours out of KL. Though a series of events that happened prior to arriving here, I had to seriously focus on being present to really experience what was occurring. Everyone is grouped into groups by time. When it is your time, they will gather your group and assist in boarding the group onto the boat. Once in the boat, you will travel around the pond to view the fireflies. The fireflies will be flying around in the trees. Focus on the trees and not on the pond. The experience is like viewing a Christmas tree with flickering lights. It is quite beautiful. Unfortunately, my phone camera was not able to take quality pictures in the dark. Some notes: Bring mosquito repellent. Bring tissue and hand sanitizer. Relieve yourself prior to arriving. Be present and enjoy the experience.

Yelp
REVIEWER # 3 Okay, so I'm usually not the one to get overjoyed by seeing flying things, you know, things like eagles, butterflies, and things like that...but surprisingly I was so thrilled to be up close and personal with eagles (during my eagles feeding with them), and with fireflies (not really nothing to brag about). A first time experience for me and I somewhat truly enjoyed it. My tour guide for the whole day recommended this place, and although I was up for getting out of the city of KL, I didn't know this was in store for me. For 40RM you get to see an eagle feeding at 7 PM that lasts an hour and then from 8PM-9PM you get to see the fireflies. Getting a ticket is super easy. You walk up to the booth and tell them which activity to you would like and they give you a boarding pass; next, they buckle you up in a lifejacket before you board the boat (safety first!), then you board the boat. The boats accommodate about 12 people. I really enjoyed the eagle feeding as the sunset views were GORGEOUS; so mesmerizing! The boat driver was tossing fish from the boat and the Eagles would come SUPER close to us. A little scary if you ask me, but I am a scary cat. Next, was the fireflies which I somewhat enjoyed because the fireflies made the trees look like Christmas trees! HA! Make sure you bring your bug repellent, although I don't think it helped me much. This park is about 1.5 hours from Kuala Lumpur and although they have tons of tours for sell, I would strongly encourage you to reason with a taxi driver and have them drive you around after agreeing on a flat price. It is MUCH cheaper to pay them then pay a tour guide! Between the feeding the monkeys and the eagle feeding, I really enjoyed my day outside of Kuala Lumpur. I certainly recommend this experience if this is your first time in Malaysia.

Yelp
This review is just for the Firefly Park, which was not quite what I expected, but it was interesting and I am glad I went. If you are from the United States, these are not likely to be the fireflies / lightning bugs you are used to seeing -- the fireflies here for the most part are sitting still on branches along the riverside and are blinking in unison. It is an interesting sight, although at least my brain interpreted the fireflies here more like Christmas lights than the incongruous flashes of light from living things flying around on a dark night that I have seen before. The boat ride lasts about 20 minutes, with the boat's pilot rowing you upstream along one side of the river, pulling you in to the bank a few times for a closer view, and then back down the other side of the river to the landing. The wait in line for the small boats -- four guests per boat -- is hot and humid, especially once you put on a life jacket, although roof-mounted fans help a little. Informative signs about the fireflies and the area (and the donors to the park) line the entryway. The entryway also has benches in some areas. One note: While you are in the boat, focus on the interesting fireflies and not on the debris and trash bumping into your boat. The latter was not awful, but being in the dark helps.

Yelp
Malaysia review #4 If you've ever been on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and paid attention to the little details, you may have noticed the little lights flickering in the trees near the water. Well folks, these little flickering lights are supposed to be fireflies and the idea of small glowing / flickering bugs has always appealed to my inner child. One of the things my "tour guide" brother-in-law said we are doing, is a trip to a firefly park. Wow, cool! I'm sure there are other firefly parks out there, but this is one the family told the driver to go to. An hour and a half drive later, we arrive. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kampung-kuantan-fireflies-park-kuala-selangor?select=Vfsb-qhf42Av7Xs3mAWScg We walk up to the ticket window to buy our way in. You pay for a boat which will hold 4 people (it was 40 ringgit, but has since gone up to RM50 - about $14 US). Each ticket includes a drink and a local snack. Nice. We stand in line in the waiting area, reading all the signs on the walls about the fireflies. It turns out the fireflies gather in the mangrove trees to feed and flash to attract a mate. Very interesting stuff! As these little bugs can only be seen doing It's thing at night, don't bother going there much before sunset. The best hours are from 7:30 pm until 10:30 pm when the park closes. The time comes, we put on the life vests and 4 of us load into a boat. The guide pushes off and rows down the river into near total complete darkness, only the dim moon in the sky is lighting our way. It's a little unnerving at first, but eventually our eyes adjust to the darkness. After nearly 10 minutes, off in the distance we start to see the faint glow of the flickering bugs. We get closer and they are still not very bright, but still VERY NEAT to see! Our guide moves the boat very close to the mangrove tree where the little fireflies are and even reaches out and gently collects one of them in his hand. After a minute or so it starts to light up and blink in his hand. How awesome to see! Unfortunately, due to the uncontrolled pollution from nearby factories along the river, the firefly population has been declining. Although there are still colonies of fireflies in the area, there are far fewer then there were 10 years ago. I'm very happy I was able to visit this firefly park and see the abundance of little glowing bugs that we did!

Yelp
When visiting Kuala Selangor, one cannot help but drop by one of the many Firefly viewing tours available in the area. Kampong Kuantan is one such option that does not include a chalet or resort stay. Basically you just drive up to the park and put your car in its massive car park lot and take a short walk in to the ticket counter where you have to pay RM50 for a single boat which can fit up to 4 people. The price used to be RM40 per boat but has recently increased (inflation perhaps?). Once you have your tickets, you join a line to wait for your turn to board a wooden sampan. There are posters educating you on the life habits of the fireflies and conservation efforts, as well as benches to rest when you get tired of standing. In line with us were tourists from Korea, Japan, Europe and of course locals. It wasn't a long wait until we were handed our life jackets and showed a boat. Our boatman was rather shy but he did answer all our questions. The fireflies themselves were a spectacular view, almost like lights on a Christmas tree and out boatman was kind enough to row us right to the very edge of the mangrove trees where the fireflies were blinking so they were within reach. We were however, highly discouraged from touching them. The bugs themselves were very tiny and rather afraid since they stopped blinking whenever we got too near. The whole trip took about 20 minutes and we did not move very far from the jetty. Nevertheless it was a good and educational experience. For those with seasickness like me, there is a small café where you can pick up snacks and drinks and gain your composure before heading back. Start your review...
