During my visit to Istanbul, I decided to take the metro beneath the Bosphorus to explore the Asian side of the city and try one of the well-known local workmen’s restaurants that many people recommend for reasonably priced meals. That is how I found Kanaat Lokantası, a historic establishment with a long reputation in the Üsküdar area.
The restaurant does have an English menu available online, though on the evening I visited several of the dishes listed were not available. The waiter was very helpful and kindly walked me over to the hot food counter so I could see what was being served that night and choose directly from the prepared dishes, which made the process much easier.
For my meal I selected a lamb dish served with a creamy, slightly cheesy sauce along with plain white rice. At the table there was bottled water (about 10 Turkish lira) and I also ordered a Coke Zero. After the main course the waiter invited me to the dessert counter, where I chose a cake soaked in honey syrup with a creamy topping that resembled a light cream cheese.
Kanaat Lokantası itself is not a fancy restaurant, but it is clean, traditional, and refreshingly unpretentious. The portions were generous and the experience felt authentic and very local, which I appreciated. The flavors of the meal were pleasant and satisfying, though perhaps a bit milder than I had expected given Turkey’s reputation for richly seasoned cuisine.
In total the bill came to about 1300 Turkish lira (roughly $33 at the time of my visit). While the meal was enjoyable, it was not quite the bargain I had hoped for when making the trip across the Bosphorus in search of a simple workmen’s restaurant. Considering the travel time and cost to reach the Asian side, I may find myself continuing to dine more often in the tourist areas on the European side of Istanbul, where English menus are more common and ordering is a bit easier for visitors.
That said, the service was friendly and attentive, and I left a small tip to thank the waiter for his assistance. Overall, Kanaat Lokantası offers a genuine look at a traditional Istanbul lokanta and will likely appeal to diners who enjoy experiencing a classic local restaurant in the Üsküdar neighborhood.
Moreover I tried to order Turkish tea at the end of the meal but the waiter pointed at his watch and apparently around dinner time they do not serve Turkish tea.
