Beautiful place and great escape from the hustle & bustle of Mumbai. Bit weird that you have to pay twice (at the entrance of the park and the entrance of the caves). Also for non Indian residents (= tourists) it’s 300 inr (or 12x as expensive)

A Wonderful Day at Kanheri Caves Visiting the Kanheri Caves was an amazing experience. The moment we entered the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and began the short trek toward the caves, the atmosphere felt peaceful and refreshing. The ancient Buddhist caves are truly fascinating — beautifully carved stone pillars, intricate sculptures, meditation halls, and stunning views from the top. Every corner tells a story that takes you back thousands of years. The climb is comfortable, and the cool breeze makes the whole walk even more enjoyable. What made the visit even more special was experiencing it with my family. We explored each cave together, clicked pictures, and enjoyed the serene surroundings. It was a perfect mix of nature, history, and quality family time. I truly enjoyed the caves with my family and would highly recommend Kanheri Caves to anyone looking for a memorable and enriching day out.

Wonderful place to visit. From entrance you have to take government bus which is chargeable to reach the cave. A full day is required to understand each and every cave in detail. The security guards help us voluntarily in explaining the sculptures. Restroom and refreshment is available at the location.

Visited: November 2024 I'm an explorer who loves to visit historical and archaeological places, and Kanheri Caves was a real treat! Took a train to Borivali and then a shared auto for ₹25 to reach Sanjay Gandhi National Park. From there, I took the ₹20 shuttle bus that takes you straight to the caves. It’s amazing how such a peaceful and serene spot exists in the middle of Mumbai! The caves are well-maintained, and the history here is incredible. I was astonished by the big standing Buddha statue—it’s both impressive and calming. The ancient water management system carved into the stone is fascinating—stone channels and cisterns designed to collect and guide rainwater. It’s amazing how advanced the architecture was for its time. The ancient monk cells were another highlight—small, carved-out rooms where monks once lived and meditated. Walking through them, you really feel the quiet, spiritual atmosphere of the place. It’s like stepping back into a different time. I spent about 3 hours exploring every cave—be prepared for a lot of walking and stairs. Carry plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes, and take your time to appreciate the surroundings. There are plenty of shaded spots to rest, which definitely helps. A big thanks to the security guards—one of them saved me from an aggressive monkey and handed me his stick for protection. Beware of monkeys if you’re carrying food—they’re quick! Tip: Go early to avoid the heat, keep your food sealed, and enjoy the peaceful vibe of this historical escape. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Kanheri Caves are widely appreciated as a historic, peaceful and picturesque attraction within Sanjay Gandhi National Park — great for a half-day trip if you enjoy history, greenery and light trekking. Just plan your transport and timing (avoid peak crowds) for the best experience.

It's a great day trip. Full of ancient caves carved more than 2000 years ago by Buddhist monks. The way to reach has also been well designed along with the convenience of the bust taking you up to the caves from the National park entrance. The tickets are reasonably priced. Additionally there is the tiger safari, park, boating etc. which you could do if you have time. Do carry water and some little eatables as the trek is a bit long and definitely not for elders or very small children.

It is located inside National Park. This is a good place to visit along with family and friends. Been here a few times. Busses are available to reach the Kanheri Caves from the entry gate of National Park. The caves are considered to be one of the oldest caves of ancient times. There are 109 caves of historical relevance. If you wanna go explore the beauty of nature or go trekking, this is just one of the many places you would not want to miss. It is a good place to visit during monsoons, especially if it rains. Beware of the monkeys!
