we stayed at Kankarwa haveli as part of our Udaipur trip. We were happy to find an available room at the last minute, at what seemed like a reasonable rate at the time. While it was a lovely heritage property, unfortunately there were quite a few drawbacks that affected our experience.
We had booked a car through Kankarwa for a day trip to Chittorgarh on our first day, straight from the airport. On our drive back, at 8pm the driver informed us that owing to a traffic jam he would be unable to drop us off all the way to the property, and would arrange for us to switch over to a rickshaw instead. On further probing, we realised that the roads in the old city can’t be accessed by cars any way and the last 1km is routinely covered by rickshaw or two wheelers regardless of traffic conditions. We had not been informed about this at the time of booking, and the reasoning of a traffic jam felt deceptive. The car we had was too small for our luggage due to miscommunication, and the driver had organised for some of the suitcases to be delivered to the hotel in a separate car, but given that he was being untruthful about the traffic jam, it was difficult to trust that our luggage had safely reached Kankarwa.
We had booked the deluxe lake room view, which was 2 floors up, accessible only by stairs. It was a great view of Lal Ghat, but the room lacked several basic amenities and maintanence. The bathroom was very basic however the shower head had really low water pressure, and the lever to switch between the tap and shower often malfunctioned. There was only body wash available. There was one common plug point between the aircon and kettle, and some of the mugs were unclean. There was no phone in the room, so if you wanted to ask for anything it meant climbing down the steep and narrow steps each time to reception.
There is a rooftop restaurant (vegetarian only) accessible by more stairs which prepares fresh food, and it was delicious! We enjoyed two dinners there thoroughly. They provide you with a menu but will tell you if something is unavailable. It would be better if they had a board up each day stating what food is being prepared for the day, allowing the guests to choose accordingly. It would also help add to the home stay vibe they are aiming to achieve. Breakfast was included in our package but it was honestly a very limited menu.
The demeanor of the hosts was honestly a little disappointing too. We felt the owners/managers were quite cold and were even told by one of the owners how Indians are unable to tolerate stairs in the property while caucasians often have no issue. It unfortunately did not feel like there was an atmosphere of hosting guests and wanting to make their stay in Udaipur memorable.
Overall, the plus points for Kankarwa Haveli are its prime location (it’s very close to all the main market area and city palace), and of course the beautiful view of the lake from both the room and rooftop. This seems to be the reason for its steep prices but unfortunately the amenities and services do not justify a price equivalent to staying in a 4 star hotel. It might be appropriate for an overnight stay to experience living in a heritage property, however the minimal service and steep staircase make it challenging for a 4 night stay like ours.
