Airports Are Creating Inclusive Quiet Spaces Where All Travelers Can Find Calm

"Kansas City International airport is planning a space where the boarding process can be rehearsed. It’s called an airplane simulator, and when it opens with the airport’s new terminal in 2023, it will allow fliers to practice every step of passing through the airport, from TSA screening to takeoff."

It is big, it is functional, it is walkable. I had a massive flight delay so I appreciated there were options to eat and burn some time. I enjoyed the little explanation of Kansas City flight history in between the A and B gates too. That gives a nice touch of locality. Food is airport grade so don't get too excited... read reviews before ordering if you can. Plenty of sit-down and counter-serve options though heavy on the Americana options (BBQ, burgers, pizza...) More to Southwest's credit than the airports, the Southwest desk folks are superb and give vastly better support than other airlines. The views of the storm that hit us were also excellent for what that is worth.

Google
Really really nice. This is a major step up from the old airport that I saw back in 2016/7. It's very clean, good options for shop and eat, and the TSA is efficient. The prices are a bit harsh, but what airport isn't.

I travel domestically for work all the time and MCI continues to be my favorite stop for a layover. The Stockyards restaurant is a favorite stop of mine because it doesn’t feel like “airport food”, the service is always friendly and quick, and it feels clean. There is also a farm-to-table restaurant, but ai haven’t checked it out yet (I’m a sucker for KC BBQ - Stockyard nachos pic attached). Another perk is the all-gender restrooms which makes it easier for families who are traveling to stick together; also a safe haven for Gender Non-Conforming folks. There’s an impressive Play Area for younger kids, which helps ease the boredom of children waiting to board their plane. This airport meets all your travel needs with ease.

Google
I really like this new international airport it’s very easy airport like I go one hour or one hour 30 minutes maximum before my flight, very clean very organized very easy security is very very fast and are very nice. People think you can city Kansas and Missouri for building that new airport. Proud to be from Kansas.

The airport bathrooms were clean. People working here were friendly. The TSA for departures was set up with long transit lines for no reason. TSA moved fast once you reached the station.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kansas City Airport CDI is top-notch! From start to finish, the process was seamless. The facility is clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate. The staff is professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful, ensuring a stress-free experience. They go above and beyond to assist with any questions or concerns. Highly recommend for anyone needing CDI services in the Kansas City area. Excellent service all around! Let me know if you’d like any adjustments!

It's double the size that it was four years ago when I was there last. It looks fantastic. Baggage claim was easy to find. We knew we had to take a shuttle to get from the terminals to the rental car place. We didn't see any signage for it (they probably had it, we just didn't see it), so we found a help desk at baggage claim, and they directed us. The shuttle was easy to find after that. We hopped on board, and everybody got off at the same stop because all the rental car places are in the same area. The person who checked us in at Enterprise was nice and helped answer all of our (many!) questions. Once we were at the car rental distribution place, a person walked us through the parking area and showed us our options. We chose a Mazda SUV, which has been great. All in all, it was a great, updated, modern experience with helpful people at the ready.

A very nice and kind lady was serving snacks and coffee before boarding the Delta Flight. It’s was very much appreciated by all around us. Small gesture, big results.

Yelp
Maybe I'm a little biased as a local... but I LOVE our new KC airport! From the beautiful art installations (that still highlight our beautiful city, such as the fountain that takes center stage after security), to the natural light, to the LOCAL shopping and dining options, the airport has everything. Inclusive spaces, such as the sensory room, and gender neutral bathrooms, ensure everyone feels comfortable here. The bathrooms are clean, gates have plenty of space to stretch out and wait, and there's enough charging stations to go around (yay!). Security is relatively quick - I've never waited more than 20 minutes or so, and the airport is laid out in such a walk that even the farthest gate is only a ~10 minute walk. Again, maybe I'm biased because I'm a local. But, this is now the airport I'll compare all others to :D

Yelp
Kansas City: do better. I mean FFS, don't you have ANYONE in Food and Beverage or do you not GAF once your lessee has signed a lease? I'm not a huge fan of DFW or Dallas. But I'll tell you what: everywhere, every single place in that airport has solid food. Denver has great food. Midway has solid food and bartenders and actual SERVICE. KCI? BWAHAHAHAHA. I don't believe they have an F&B. There's no fucking way. And I guarantee they don't have mystery shoppers. Because if they did and "enjoyed" the room temperature "Dirty Mac and Cheese" at the BBQ Spot, or the non-existent service at Stockyards or the lousy service at The Leagues, that person would make SOME CHANGES. But KCI will always be a second-tier airport. And that sucks. But not as much as being charged airport prices for shitty pours on your liquor and mediocre, cold food. And I thought St. Louis had the worst airport ever. Wow. Was I wrong.
google avatar

Shakeyla R.

Yelp
I would say this is one of the easier airports to navigate. I find that there is always quite a line in TSA (this is my fourth visit here). I'm not sure how to avoid that other than having precheck or Clear but it moves pretty fast, it's just always crowded. One thing that I can consistently speak on is that KCI is consistently clean. There's never any random spills or trash laying around in the walkways or waiting areas. The bathrooms are always clean and presentable. I think that's truly what sets it apart from most airports. It is big but I felt that it's easy to navigate unlike other large airports. I travel in mostly for work here but glad that I do.

Yelp
A great very efficient airport. It is spaced out, and very clean. I happen to fly through right before Super Bowl, so there was lots of Super Bowl magic going on. The gates are spaced out. The airport is not huge, so it's easy to walk around and get from one area to another. There is lots of choices to eat as well as great lounges. I recommend taking a flight out from here.
google avatar

Yelp
The Kansas City Airport is easy to get around and navigate, very clean and has some decent food options. It is certainly on the smaller airport side but this is also part of its charm!
google avatar

Ted J.

Yelp
The new airport was the rave about town! I have to say that it is really nice. Not as tightly packed as the older airport...huge aisles, but still easy to get around. Decent shopping, and nice art all around. Really nice airport
google avatar

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Beautiful and clean airport. Small and very easy to navigate. Going thru security was a breeze as it wasn't crowded. They have an all gender bathroom, but regular men and women bathrooms as well. Bathrooms were very clean.
google avatar

Kia R.

Yelp
Smaller airport. They need to reconfigure the rental car location away from terminal and process. Security was fast. No Starbucks in Terminal A at all. Restrooms were clean but few stalls. Plenty of charging desks for electronics.

Yelp
I flew to Kansas City for a work conference a week or so ago and was really impressed by the airport. I was walking through saying: "oooh how pretty...oooh how clean...oooh art...looks so new" only to find out that the airport is - in fact - brand new. It opened in 2023. So, yeah, it's big and bright and clean and new. Lots of shops, restaurants, breweries, bathrooms, etc. It was surprising to me that a new airport would decide to have off-site car rental but they had plenty of shuttles that ran very often, and I hardly waited at all! Overall, it was a really nice airport to fly to/through!

Yelp
Apparently the newly redesigned and modernized Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is a grand improvement over its predecessor. As a first timer coming from Philadelphia it seemed clean, compact and endowed with state of the art amenities for food and social comfort. I had no serious complaints, but did have a small issue with misinformation provided by the information desk as to where to find a particular hotel shuttle location on the ground floor that had me walking the wrong way and needing to double back to reach the van just in time to join my comrades. Little wait once on the plane getting to the runway and taking off. Compared to Philly it was amazing. And, of course there was that midwestern charm displayed by everyone I encountered, even when being misinformed. Hard to feel too annoyed when everyone is so polite and sincere. Just chalk it up to regional accents. I know my NY/NJ/PA drawl can be challenging. As an aside-It is cool how into their Chiefs these KC people are. They are righty proud of their notoriety. I would be, too.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Really nice and new looking airport! Security and rental car shuttles operated without issue during our visit, and the terminal area was surprisingly quiet. There are a handful of shops and restaurants, but they're quite spread out throughout the A and B gates.

Yelp
Wow what a fantastic upgrade this turned out to be. Those of you who have been traveling through KCI airport for years know what I mean. The old airport was so out dated, cramped, and just not a good experience. They have really upgraded with this new airport! I used to dread coming through, out of, or into this area but now it is a welcome breath of fresh air! The air port is spacious, well designed, is easy navigate and looks great. It is a breeze to get through. I will not be dreading going through this airport any more.

Yelp
Hey so I fly into Kansas City multiple times a year to visit family. The new terminal is a million times better than the pre 9-11 terminals (which were awesome for pick up and drop off pre-9-11). It's a benefit to have multiple food and restaurant options not to mention the check in process seems to move swift. Appreciate the nod to Kansas City life and culture in the airport interior theme and decor.
google avatar

Boon C.

Yelp
Great airport to be. The arrival from the rental was well indicated. The return of rental was perfectly show. It has shuttle take you directly to the terminal. The tickets counter also easily found with the airline you need to be. I was impressed the airport has an in the terminal pet relief area. Inside the relief area, it has fire hydrant, wash area, dog pool bag and hand wash area. Very well thought. I saw a decoration with saxophone shaped like airplane. The restaurant is at the concentrate area and easy for your choice before you head to wing terminal area. Overall the air port is good design. Security is very fast to past through. A lot good things has been considered for the traveler.

Yelp
Kansas City International Airport had a remodel recently where it's much nicer and more modern looking than the old airport. It's always a much more quiet airport than your big cities like New York, LA, Chicago. The pictures I took were taken around 10 PM when our flight arrived - it was a complete ghost town. I really enjoy flying here because it's nowhere near as congested as the other airports, but it's also a bit smaller if you're used to the other big name locations. Overall - it's easy to find where you're going and it's a pretty laid back airport.
google avatar

Yelp
WOW!!! First time at the new airport!!! Loving it!! . Great eats, coffee and shops!! Very Comfortable and as always super friendly people. The rent a car system works the same way so easy to get acquainted with new system . Three cheers for MCI!!
google avatar

Richard N.

Yelp
The new MCI is. Incredible!!!!!! What a beautiful transformation, well, NEW FACILITY. Impossible to facelift that old thing.
google avatar

Kyle A.

Yelp
The new airport is fantastic. The old airport was one star and had no amenities. Lot's of restaurants and shops - I like it that it's 80% local restaurants and they can only mark up prices 15% from local stores so not as high priced as many airports. Laid out in a way it's easy to navigate and you don't have to take trains between gates. Lots of art. Clear jet bridges and you can see out to the tarmac. It's a beautiful airport
google avatar

Genevieve M.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Kansas City airport in the past couple years- you are in for a surprise. It's well laid out with ample dining and entertainment options. They have a sensory friendly kids area, bathrooms for kids/ adults that are sensitive to the needs of various physical challenges and pet relief area. Some neat art and history learning stations if you have some time to spend and are interested to learn more about the area. Only complaint is the pick up/ drop off lanes could have designed better as this can be an issue during major travel events. Busses to the car rental areas run continuously. Good lighting and signage.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
This airport gets my vote for biggest glow-up. It used to be terrible. Every few terminals were their own hermetically concealed compartments. The only food you could get in many of these modules was a vending machine. Now, there has been a dramatic redesign. Everything is unified, and big, and open. Traffic and line control very well-handled when arriving and departing. There are lots of good places to eat and drink, with many of them being local! Even the shops filled with kitschy tourist stuff are nice, with many things I wanted to actually purchase. Only issue is that there's no Alaska Airlines representation in the baggage area most of the time.
google avatar

Sarah O.

Yelp
This airport is so beautiful from the entrance to all around. It is a long walk to your gate but it's not too bad maybe a mile at most. They have a bunch of local food places which is a nice touch so you can try some more of they food options. But they don't have any big chain fast food like chic fila McDonalds etc
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Travelers be prepared. If you are renting a car you have to walk all the way down to one end and it is not very well marked to find directions to bus to take you to rental car hub. Which also means on your way back if you are taking Southwest you have to walk from one side to the other than 3/4a if the way back to then go through security (wear comfortable shoes). Other than that nice airport. I did notice most places only sell giant waters not the more reasonable carrying size.
google avatar

Bill Z.

Yelp
KCI has been one of the nicest, cleanest, and most efficient airports to which I have been in many years. I understand it's a reboot, and everything works. The ceiling decor is interesting and fun. TSA is all over the place and the lines are short. I was through check-in and pre-check in I think 8 minutes. There's lots of nice options for food and drink here. The gates have more adequate seating than many other older airports. Of course, the down side is that they were able to do all this by getting lots of wide open space 20-plus miles outside of Kansas City, so you'll have to enjoy your ride to/from as well as enjoy the airport.
google avatar

Sunil R.

Yelp
This is only around a year old and is really well done. Nice use of tech throughout the airport, good food options, and the staff are very efficient. Now if only they were located closer to downtown...the drive is a bit of a pain.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
What an upgrade!! Easy parking, ticketing, walk right to terminal and tons of food and drink options. Almost want to go earlier so we can enjoy breakfast lunch or dinner before flights as there are so many great options! Also great job on baggage claim! By the time we get to it from flight, our bags are always there and ready to go! Excellent art and sculptures throughout the terminals. Thank you KC for this new upgraded facility!
google avatar

Yelp
Taylor Swift's boyfriend's airport is actually super nice. I was shocked to step of the plane in KC on a recent work trip and into the modern mecca that is the new Kansas City airport. Barbeque options abound and virtually everything is automated. More than that, the place is incredibly clean for being an airport -- even the bathrooms, which is no small achievement. My checked bag was delivered promptly, and I was easily able to find a seat with a plug to charge my laptop and phone in simultaneously. I was initially a little bummed to find out that the rental car location was far enough away from the terminals that it required hopping on a shuttle bus. But honestly, it wasn't a bad ride and the buses arrive frequently. The shuttle buses are also fairly modern, featuring seating options along with places to safely store luggage so that it doesn't slip and slide along for the ride. If you're traveling to MIZZOU and need to decide whether to fly into here or STL, this is definitely the better option.
google avatar

Miori I.

Yelp
First time in Kansas City...first impression: Stepped off the plane to the immediate smell of fried foods. Was I already hungry? More than likely yes haha. Great new terminal. A friend who lives here mentioned the spiffy new airport so we took note: -First bathroom I saw was Gender neutral bathroom, 30 stalls, tall floor to ceiling walls/doors in each stall. much nicer than the gender specific restrooms, in my opinion. -A gated dog run, which I've yet to see at an airport. -A couple big art installations which were nice -Several great shops, numerous food, snack, and beer options to choose from. Get your last fix of bbq and local brew. Just 4 minutes away via shuttle from the car rental location which is convenient. The new bright and airy terminal gets an A+ from me!
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Kansas City did a great job on this airport with room to expand in the future. Clean, lots of seating and charging stations and a regular interval of restrooms in between so you don't have to take a long hike (note this STL). Good BBQ availability but a bit pricey compared to town....captured market so make the visit pay.
google avatar

Charley B.

Yelp
So, this is what a real airport is like. I can get used to it. I love the natural light. Yes, you're mostly looking at airplanes, but it's a major upgrade from the LED-based cave-like atmosphere of the previous terminal. I also love the commons areas. You can grab a seat and relax between connections. You can also visit a nice selection of stores that offer everything between grab n' go food and toiletry options to the finest of local Kansas City merchandise. (I recommend a Charlie Hustle heart tshirt and a bottle of Classic Gates BBQ sauce from Made in KC.) THERE ARE REAL RESTAURANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I'm shouting. If you visited the old terminal, you know that most of the food options, many of which were below average, were beyond Security, so if you wanted to eat something semi decent you had to leave and reenter. Not any more. The new terminal offers a great variety of local and chain options to satisfy your hunger. Yes, there's BBQ. I saw a child's play area, which is a nice options when you're littles need to burn off some energy. I've heard there is a small doggy / pet area for you non-human friend(s.) I haven't seen it and I haven't looked for it because I don't have pets, however a few of my pet-owner friends say they like it. They say it's a nice place to get their four-legged friend out of the main terminal chaos so they can relax. They also like their pet having the option to use the restroom. A couple of notes: One of the terminal's claims to fame is providing a large number of restrooms. This is technically true. Most of those restrooms are in the midpoint areas in Terminal A and B. They're easy to access and a great space to do what you need to do. The bathroom options begin to dwindle the farther you get to the end of the terminals. They're still there, but there aren't as many of them. Be prepared to walk a little and give yourself a little time if you need to. If you're visiting and somebody is picking you up, please let them know about the cell phone lot. It's a short three to five minute drive from the terminal and helps keep traffic flowing.
google avatar

Kris G.

Yelp
I have only been here quickly on a layover, but the airport felt bright and open. My only sad point was, I didn't see too many food spots near my gates and ended up only being able to grab a bag of chips. Overall, not a bad spot for a layover.
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
Probably one of the cutest airports I have seen. The airport was very clean and easy to get around in. It's not very big so things are not difficult to find. I took my daughter to the bathroom here and it was very clean.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
It's an airport not a lot. You can say about it. It's super nice. Got a lot of escalators so that's a plus I don't really have any complaints. Everybody's nice food. Vendors are nice. The bathrooms are clean.
google avatar

Danny N.

Yelp
This airport looks way nicer now compared to the old Kansas City airport! It's a modern look and has great bbq places! Don't forget to stock up on Chiefs gear!
google avatar

Genesis D.

Yelp
I came here in June and southwest gates were quite festive with their birthday on June 18th, with Juneteenth, and with Pride Month. I was pleasantly surprised with the play area and sensory rooms! And they are inclusive so come on and play friends of all abilities! I also thoroughly enjoyed the available shops and the bookstore. I was a connecting passenger in Gate B so I can't speak much of other parts of the airport but my quick stopover was nice! I didn't have kids with me but had I been with mine, they would've loved it!!
google avatar

Janiya H.

Yelp
I honestly like KCMO's new airport. I lived here back in 2019 when the old airport was still up and running. So it is way better. I signed up for Clear here and love it: They have a lot of great food options/cafe's. But it's a longer walk to the gates. So get there at least 1 hour before departure. Assuming you have clear or TSA pre check. If not two-three hours before departure for sure. Because the walk is super long to the gate. Other than that. Love it..
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
This airport is easily accessed from the freeway and gives good direction to the rental car return. Once dropped off at the bus stop it's a short walk inside and up the escalator to the check in counters. Pre-TSA was quick and I breezed right through. Lots of choices for food and drinks.
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
It is a beautiful airy and spacious airport. There are several food options. The downside is the trek from b gate to baggage claim. The rental car facility requires a shuttle ride from the airport. There is a clear and tsa precheck line. The tsa precheck line requires you to walk through the line of people going through the regular security line. Everything moved quickly once you got in your correct line.
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
Love the new upgraded MCI! Lots of fun restaurants and decor. I did like the convenience of the old MCI, but this will do :)
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
Wow, I was pleasantly surprised with my first trip out of the new Kansas City airport. Completely unrecognizable from our old airport - modern, tons of food/shop options, natural light, and going through security was a breeze for us. We parked in the lot and within 10 minutes a shuttle picked us up to take us to the airport. Once inside, finding our gate was painless, so we were able to walk around, check out the rest of the airport, and enjoy some drinks at the boulevard brewing spot while waiting for our flight.
google avatar

Camille N.

Yelp
I really like this airport. Modern, open, plenty of eateries. One thing that was weird and maybe it's happening in more airports, was the all gender bathroom. This restroom had several stalls for both men and women. It felt kind of crazy standing beside a man and we were washing out hands at the same time, but oh well. The process seemed to move smoothly. Do what you got a do and get out. Now if I see the men in their taking selfies in front of a mirror I want, it's going to be some problems.
google avatar

J E.

Yelp
This new airport is much better looking, more open, and definitely updated - Compared to the original MCI. They have nice food options and the American Airlines terminals are comfy and clean. Nice improvement over the very small, outdated airport that used to service this area.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Yessss, new KC airport for the win! I had traveled to the old airport a few times, and it was debatably the worst airport in the country... LOL. This brand new one is wonderful. Love the fact that it's still not huge, so you can get around easily without having to rush. It's also just entirely modern and clean, with a sleek design, high ceilings, tons of gigantic windows to let the light pour in, lovely decor, and totally spacious. Oh and the best part? All of the businesses and vendors inside are local! I love that so much. Move over Applebee's and Chili's, we want to support local in our airports! Plus many vendor areas replicated different neighborhoods throughout KC, which I thought was so clever. We flew through baggage claim upon arrival, and got through security equally fast for our departure. Overall a tremendous improvement. Though we don't fly through this area too often, I'd certainly be happy with a return here!
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
How have I not yet reviewed the new airport? I've been using it monthly since it opened. 1. I like the new airport 2. I like the parking options Although the garage is a bit weird 3. I like the look 4. I like the ease of use despite its new larger size 5. I like the many many restaurants 6. I like the kids play area 7. I like the upgraded seats with charging ports 8. I like the upgraded restrooms 9. I like the many lanes for security 10. I like that we have a new airport. Of course I'll use it again, lol!
google avatar

Courtenay O.

Yelp
Five stars because what I saw and experienced was worthy of 5 stars. I don't know about dropping off and picking up people here or going through TSA. I do know it is large, well lit, and clean. There are a lot of stores and restaurants. The bathrooms are clean and some are unisex. We have never seen Amazon Prime stations as you enter a store - use a handprint to identify yourself and make purchases. We walked from B terminal to A terminal. We used the moving walkways. We stopped to read educational materials on the airport's construction and the Wright Brothers. A message board is by the displays - in case you missed audio announcements and want to read what you missed. We liked the lighted rope display by the information desk, and picked up a brochure about art through the facility. At the gate, the seats are comfortable and equipped with AC outlets, USB, & USB-c outlets. The cup holders are for water bottles. We have another hour before boarding, so we'll try one of the restaurants. This is a nice airport!
google avatar

Shalaunte W.

Yelp
I had a lay over at this airport and really just stayed in my gated area waiting to catch my next flight home. They did have a big chicken franchise but I did not get a chance to check it out. Maybe next time. Pictures on the wall I did find nice and colorful. Arrival and departure information was informative I might add. They had a gift shop that was priced reasonable called the Pitch that impressed me yay!
google avatar

MIlton S.

Yelp
Nice facelift/renovation/transformation It biz caus done well Spotless They still need to overcome the problem of 200 people surrounding the gate to board before their group is called. That continues to be a problem.
google avatar

Yelp
As a weekly traveler to airports all over, big and small, this airport was poorly planned from a people mover perspective. I'm waiting for the day a pedestrian is killed due to the poor traffic control. When you go to pick someone up the line for arrivals can be over a half mile long, even at midnight. Tsa pre check lines are only down by southwest. If you're dropped at delta you have a ways to walk. This airport may be pretty inside with lots of "new things" but poorly planned for this who travel for a living. They also allow smoking right outside of the exits, so when new comers visit the city the first thing they smell when they walk outside of people smoking, it's disgusting really. Plan for extra time to and from regardless of if you park, are dropped off, picked up. I've held off writing this review for about three months hoping it would be better, it's not. They have added "police" for the crosswalks, there is no one monitoring the vehicles that site in arrivals for over 15 min idling, causing major ba

Yelp
This is one of the nicest airports I have been through. Super clean, security was fast and easy and gate area super clean.

Isaiah G.

Yelp
We have been here a few times. It was nice and clean. They had a lot of places to sit and it wasn't overly crowded. They had a good amount of restaurants and gift shops. We had a pretty good experience.
