The United States of Abandoned Places

"Sitting dead-eyed and empty in a historic portion of Kansas City, Missouri, the mouldering medieval-styled Kansas City Workhouse looks like it comes from a different time period on the outside, but the interior of the vacant hulk is covered in graffiti that belies its more modern origins.  The towered stone fortress on Vine Street was originally built back in 1897 and was actually referred to as the “workhouse castle.” The jail put its inmates to work for the local public works, the very first of which being the creation of the jail itself which was built by the first prisoners who mined the limestone building blocks right out of the ground. Prisoners in the jail tended to be petty offenders such as beggars and drunks from around the city. The medieval European design of the fortress was not only considered trendy at the time but it also gave the site an air of imposing authority. After a few decades in operation the prison closed its doors for the first time, passing over to over a dozen new owners over the ensuing decades. It was not until 1972 that the castle was shuttered for the last time and it was abandoned. Left empty, the crumbling structure began simply a local oddity sitting just off the street. Graffiti artists soon found their way in and began tagging up the walls. In recent years, plans have been put forth to turn the workhouse into a community center and venue, but nothing has begun yet. For now the walls remained decorated by the same minor offenders that would once have been incarcerated between them." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Not much to see here but an abandoned castle in the middle of a mixed residential neighborhood. Originally a workhouse for prisoners serving a jail sentence and built over a century ago, its been left to vandals and is now full of graffiti. I visited at night and positioned my vehicle so the headlights face the front entrance for some lighting. Great place to take pics. Its a different feel when it's just you and the sounds of nature in the forefront and the sound of urban living in the background. It was not fenced off when I visited last night, but reading that homeless and transients have used it as an encampment, I didn't want to step in anything foul while walking on the lot. I enjoyed my night visit and got some great pics that looked kinda spooky.

Will fly for F.

Google
Unique experience with a beautiful old building destroyed by vandals. Was a blast photographing the place.

Google
Absolutely love the vibe of this place, really makes you feel like you're exploring a long abandoned castle. Only thing to watch out for here are the occasional glass shards. Highly reccomend stopping by if you're in the area.

Google
It's dangerous. But it's interesting to explore. Lots of homeless trash. I found the Graffiti interesting. I Could only imagine, what these ruins could be turned into. I had to Google what this once was. Will not ruin your own inquiry.

Google
What an interesting place to stop, just wish there were more information onsite to read about history of the workhouse

Google
Great for beginners into Urban Ex. Combines historic architecture with modern street art and culture. Easily accessible from the street, and stones placed as steps to climb through some of the doorways. A great activity that is free and entertaining for youth and young adults

Google
This is such a neat abandoned castle. The colorful graffiti don’t detract from the beauty but highlights it. For fans of architecture, history or abandoned places definitely worth a stop.

Yelp
What seems like a good idea to two California tourists after attending a wedding reception with super friendly bartenders who were pouring heavy the whole night and then handed us "to go" cocktails as we departed? Going to explore a really spooky abandoned castle. We bribed our Uber driver to accompany us and he agreed even though he had heart surgery a month ago. What a champ. It was super cool but I think I got a curse there because I've had REALLY bad luck (malocchio) ever since this trip so I need to do some ritual to get rid of it. Wish me luck.

Yelp
What an awesome place with a great history! The graffiti inside and outside this beautiful once abandoned building is very cool and ads to the vibe. The beers are great, the atmosphere was great and the prices were good too. Sketchy neighborhood but awesome brews. Check out the abandoned 'castle' next door too - didn't eat next door but should have! Menu was good. This is def. an up and coming area in KC.

Yelp
This street castle is no longer a classic view, there is a bunch of graffiti to Cover the entire castle from the inside to the out. I still thought it was an interesting sight to see due to the art, but you must be warned of all the graffiti

Yelp
Ebony Burnside and Daniel Edwards are restoring the old workhouse castle at 2001 Vine St. They hope to eventually turn the 1879 building into a community center, community garden, Internet café, homeless outreach center and event/concert space. Once a debters prison, owned by a Ponzi schemer for years, this castle built with locally quarried limestone is now taking a turn for the better, as is the whole Vine Jazz District. It's going to take the equivalent of $3m to renovate. Go check it out. And help them out in any way you can. Cheers

Yelp
I found myself here and realized that SAM AND COLBY CAME HERE! It's amazing! I watched for their Xplr sticker but didn't find it. There is a lot of trash and debris so be extra careful not to fall or cut yourself on something. Be safe explorers!!!
