Kaohsiung Museum of History

A fantastic experience and a great way to escape the summer heat and learn about the intriguing and dark history of Kaohsiung. The English audio guide is relatively inexpensive and allows you to immerse fully into the history of Kaohsiung and how integral it was in the Japanese war efforts in WW2. Highly recommend for both young and old!

Free with a cheap audio guide. Lovely museum, not too big. The audio guide is a help, but sometimes too detailed and not very "fun". The quality of information is amazing, though.

Pro: I love the architecture of the Japanese era building. I enjoyed the brief history animation of the city in the first room. English speakers may want to purchase the audio service or read the brochure outside of the cinema room. The landscape models of the harbor at different periods was educational. I wish they had said more about the martial law, 228 terror, the democratization but much of those displays were not in English. Recommended for the traveller seeking insight into Kaohsiung.

It is important for us to learn from history, good or bad. Very proud of the Taiwanese government for doing this and allowing everyone to learn about 228, this specific piece of history, Democracy is good. The building itself is gold as well, Japanese Imperial style.

It is good museum. They have a lot of things to explain about Kaohsiung. Even as a foreigner, I learn a lot about Kaohsiung city

We had a free day and decided to visit this place, and I’m glad we did. We had a wonderful time; there were lots to learn about Kaohsiung and how it came about. There were dynamic displays as well as innovative art sections. In addition, entrance is free! On the ground floor, there’s a souvenir shop.

If you are interested to learn about the complex history of Kaohsiung and the area,this place has it all. The exhibit is very interesting and would appeal to both children and adults. It is incredible that the museum is free. There's also a great cafe on the ground floor if the museum.

I’ve lived in Kaohsiung for more than 10 years and this was my first time here. I was surprised by how good it was. I learned so much about the history of this city. Great archives and interactive exhibits. Not all information are available in English but I would say probably more than 60%. I feel like they really tried, if they don’t have it printed, check the tablet computer, they usually have the language option on digital. It’s FREE, a great place when you need a break from the outside heat. Souvenir game is also very strong! And they even have a coffee shop. Very recommended 👍🏼
