A real piece of Hawai'i!
The Kapai'a Stitchery has been a part of Kaua'i life for over 35 years. The owner, Julie Yukimura opened the store back in the '70s and business boomed. Over the years, Julie used to shop to express her two passions: quilting and teaching. The store quickly became a hub of hand-crafted quilts on Kaua'i and other islands. Julie taught others the art of Hawaiian and traditional quilting. She nurtured the spark in anyone who showed interest and was always there for advice. Many local quilters showcased their best work in the shops windows and walls over the years, many award winning designs could be seen hanging from the rafters. Julie, herself was a kind, friendly, amazing woman who always greeted guests to her shop with a smile and sense of aloha. Tragically, Julie passed away late 2007. Her family, devastated by the loss, decided to keep the shop open.
Kapai'a Stitchery sits on the highway, just outside downtown Lihu'e, on the way to Kapa'a. Upon entering you will note that along with thousands of rolls of domestic and imported batique prints, you will also see handmade Hawaiian shirts and crafts, kimono from Japan, needlepoint, and Hawaiian children's books. The rafters are hung with various quilts made by local artisans (mostly not for sale, just for viewing pleasure). Stop by sometime when you visit the island, even if you don't quilt, to view the fabrics, and feel the true spirit of Aloha!
