"Once you've seen your first Hawai‘ian quilt, you'll want to buy them all! The distinctive fabric art uses appliqués—usually symmetrical—in bold colors, often depicting botanical designs on a white background. Many experts consider it the marriage of missionary handicrafts with the indigenous kapa (mulberry-bark cloths with geometric patterns). Opened in 1973, Kapaia Stitchery on Kauai remains the largest and longest-operating retailer of batiks, quilting supplies, and Hawai‘ian-print fabric on Kauai. It also sells finished masterpieces, for those who don't sew, as well as aloha shirts, wall hangings, locally designed visors, and animal-shaped pot holders. One especially charming gift: little stuffed-animal chickens with simple pyramid bodies of flowered fabric and cloth faces, beaks, and combs."

A bit off the beaten path but great open airy store. Everything in this shop is tailored to the quilter. They do ship!

Google
A Must-Visit for Quilters and Fabric Lovers! Shopping at this quilt and fabric shop while on vacation was an absolute delight! The staff was incredibly warm, welcoming, and full of great suggestions for gifts and projects. Their selection was outstanding—whether you’re a sewist, a quilter, or just tagging along, there’s something special for everyone. I’m so glad we made the stop—this shop is a true gem!

Google
The Kapaia Stitchery is a local quilt and fabric shop. They have a great selection of Hawaiian fabrics. The staff could have been friendlier and more inviting to their customers. They do not have any public restrooms for their customers to use. Plenty of parking.

Google
A really cute and charming shop! They are friendly and sweet and they have some fabric that is unique to their shop! Lovely batiks at reeeaaallllly good prices! I'm glad I made the 15 minute walk from the KFC! It was worth it and I'm happy to have gone! Talked story with the ladies and walked out with beautiful fabric!

Google
100 year old store with wide selection of Hawaiian patterns and fabric. Some offerings tend to lean to the larger size (like 6 yard patterns). Knowledgeable staff. Easy to spend lots of $$ here! Like most places, they have a collection of touristy knock knacks. Worth a stop.

Elisa Eiger

Google
Fabric store with a carefully curated collection, specializing in traditional and contemporary Hawaiian prints (with a rainbow of mottled watercolor prints and solids for contrast). There are also quilting/sewing kits, T-shirts, and ready-made items, some of which are made locally (casserole carriers, bibs, and adorable chicken pincushions, to name a few) and some that are Hawaiian-inspired but probably made elsewhere but, to be fair, are priced accordingly.) The lanai provides tables and chairs for non-craft-y spouses.

Google
Nice selection of fabrics. They had a good selection of quilting fabrics, but also some Hawaiian print cottons that were an appropriate apparel weight I was excited to see. I picked up some to make a dress and pajama shorts. I was very tempted by the Hawaiian quilt kits too.

Google

Yelp
***ALERT*** ***DA BEST SOUVENIR SHOP ON DA ISLAND! Every time I go to Kauai I come to the stitchery and get a custom made aloha shirt! It's tradition at this point. The nice staff members will take your measurements once you have picked out what fabric or design you are interested in. It takes them several days to make your shirt so unless you come at the beginning of your trip, I recommend you just have them ship it back home to you once they're done. That's what I always do. We've also had them make their famous Quillow for each of our kids and had their names embroidered. They love them and I think it's the best souvenir for them, that they can use for years and year.

Yelp
Great resource for traditional Hawaiian fabrics. Very helpful staff and great prices.

Yelp
Even if YOU'RE the Plus One at this place (ie, stitchery's not your thing), it was a great place for me to pick up a locally hand-sewn aloha shirt. For those of you who are here for the "right" reasons, they have a beautiful selection of fabrics as well as Stitchery supplies. And the folks there have that wonderfully widespread Hawaiian welcoming attitude. Other than that I'm at a loss for words.

Yelp
Loved this place! It's hard to find Hawaiian print where I live so I was ecstatic to shop around a bit! Very affordable per yard and they had a lot of great Hawaiian patterns. They ship also, which I may definitely use in the future. If your in the area, come check them out! The ladies that work here were super nice too!

Kathy P.

Yelp
What a treasure to find when traveling. Fabulous staff and beautiful Hawaiian fabric! They even had premade gifts for sale at very reasonable prices.

Yelp
I love this shop and their selection of fabrics, but they have never been friendly or helpful to me. I shop there every time I visit Kauai, but have never left with a good feeling. They are just not friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed shopping at this shop. Great selection of Hawaiian prints and batiks! Lots of sample quilts and kits!

Yelp
Kapaia Stitchery is an amazing shop that will enthrall any sewist &/or quilter!! The variety of fabrics including original designs, patterns, and notions is a dream come true. The staff is always there to answer questions, helpful when you need another eye to decided if the fabric combo is perfect, and prices are reasonable. I love visiting this shop and know you will too.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place. Lots of unique and island special fabrics. Look forward to stopping here every time we visit the island.

Yelp
One of my favorite stores on the island. Now selling some hand made fabric bags and children's clothing. I especially love the tea towels . Stop by and chat for a bit. Great seats outside for maybe a waiting husband???? A wonderful selection of fabric and patterns.
google avatar

Billy L.

Yelp
Gail, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. My sister was looking for information about having some Hawaiian shirts made into quilts and Gail spent a lot of time answering her questions. The fabrics are beautiful! If you sew or enjoy crafts, it's not to be missed!

Yelp
OMG, I'm in love with this store. So much charm, so many tempting fabrics. There is no air-conditioning, so it can get kind of hot. Parking is very easy in the front. They have a wide variety of batik fabrics in all sorts of lovely colors. They have tons of fabrics with prints that are suitable for Hawaiian shirts. Prices are very reasonable. They have some kids prints and a clearance section. Most of the fabrics seem to hover around $8 to $12 a yard. Service is also very good. The ladies working there are super helpful and don't mind if you browse the store for a long period of time. I believe they were running a deal where if you bought 5 yards of fabric, you can get 1 yard for free. Now who can resist that! They also offer custom made Hawaiian shirts starting at around $70 and going up based on the yardage of fabric and the kind of fabric used. Overall, a great place to stop by if you are into crafts, quilting, or fabrics.

Yelp
Fantastic shop to buy fabrics for sewing and quilting! I found myself buying a suitcase full of fabrics, just the most beautiful patterns and colors! It was hard to chose. The staff is wonderful, and the selection is just amazing. This shop is at least 50 years old, and the staff is very knowledgeable. My mother was thrilled with everything I purchased there. The fabric is gorgeous, of very high quality, and an excellent price. I learned about this shop years ago from a state park ranger for Kokee Park. The gift shop there had traditional Hawaiian quilt patterns, and I wanted to purchase fabrics and other items my mother would not be able to get in New England. It turns out that Kauai has quite a quilting tradition. One of the best parts of my trip to Kauai was spending time here. My mother was thrilled with everything I bought at this shop.

Yelp
Love, love, love this shop! Just want to take a moment and compliment the customer service at this shop. Nothing but kind, knowledgeable, no-pressure customer service here. Extremely helpful with all my questions about Hawaiian quilting and appliqué. Also have to mention that the fabric here is beyond gorgeous, and very reasonably priced. Cutest little fabric shop I've ever been to. Lovely experience and will be back next week with my quilty family & friends!
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
I'm always on the hunt for interesting and unusual aloha shirts. I learned I could choose fabric from their store and they would make the shirts for me. I've had them make three shirts, and they are exquisite. The craftsmanship is top notch. The print pattern lines up smartly across the buttons, as do the pockets. I would expect this would be a matter of course, there are shops that do not deliver this level of detail. I've asked about making shirts from fabric I provide, and unfortunately they won't do that. I find that unfortunate. Nonetheless, we will be back. I love their work.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Beautiful fabric offerings- lots of batik and local only prints in a rainbow of colors! They also have a ton of pre cut fat quarters and larger cuts in gorg tropical floral prints. We always buy a couple Tikki Dawg collars too since they have that vendor onsite. I always find such lovely and unique fabric here!
google avatar

Pam K.

Yelp
Every trip to Kaua'i requires a visit to Kapaia Stitchery! Faith has made three shirts for my husband...he picks the fabric...they are fabulous! I buy needlepoint kits, but if you are a quilter, this is a must visit! Love it!

Shannon A.

Yelp
Very helpful service! Large selection of batiks and Hawaiian prints. Great place for gift shopping --- shirts and childrens clothes made with hawaiian fabric, pillowcases with Hawaiian appliqué, other fabric gifts. Super prices for yardage, lots of pre-cuts for quilting and stash building.
google avatar

ML H.

Yelp
Lots of fabric aimed at quilters but plenty of kits and other goodies if you're making other stuff. The fat-quarter bundles are great -- grouped in colors and prints that you can take home and remember all that you've seen on the island. I finally picked up a small sashiko kit and needles/thread I'll need to start and finish my "souvenir" project. Got a kick out of the review that mentioned the couch in front for husbands to chill out, then couldn't help but notice the hunting gear that occupied the store front as well. Interesting combo, and wonder why I haven't seen this one tried before. Touché!

Yelp
A real piece of Hawai'i! The Kapai'a Stitchery has been a part of Kaua'i life for over 35 years. The owner, Julie Yukimura opened the store back in the '70s and business boomed. Over the years, Julie used to shop to express her two passions: quilting and teaching. The store quickly became a hub of hand-crafted quilts on Kaua'i and other islands. Julie taught others the art of Hawaiian and traditional quilting. She nurtured the spark in anyone who showed interest and was always there for advice. Many local quilters showcased their best work in the shops windows and walls over the years, many award winning designs could be seen hanging from the rafters. Julie, herself was a kind, friendly, amazing woman who always greeted guests to her shop with a smile and sense of aloha. Tragically, Julie passed away late 2007. Her family, devastated by the loss, decided to keep the shop open. Kapai'a Stitchery sits on the highway, just outside downtown Lihu'e, on the way to Kapa'a. Upon entering you will note that along with thousands of rolls of domestic and imported batique prints, you will also see handmade Hawaiian shirts and crafts, kimono from Japan, needlepoint, and Hawaiian children's books. The rafters are hung with various quilts made by local artisans (mostly not for sale, just for viewing pleasure). Stop by sometime when you visit the island, even if you don't quilt, to view the fabrics, and feel the true spirit of Aloha!

Yelp
Clean store, wonderful selection of fabrics and a few finished products hanging around the store, and ample parking- what a great store! Though I myself don't quilt (more of a Joann's girl myself) I found this store to be a paradise within paradise- the fact that it was very well air-conditioned was the icing on top.
google avatar

M L.

Yelp
Tons of Hawaiian print fabrics and Asian (even made in Japan) prints! I also went to the discount fabric store in Lihue and I think this store has more selection on the Hawaiian prints. Very reasonable price for the Hawaiian prints fabrics!
google avatar

Lorna P.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed spending time and $$$ in this lovely shop. The most beautiful selection of batiks I've seen anywhere. Also a great selection of island made gift items and souvenirs. Very helpful staff. I hope to return soon and do some more shopping.

Yelp
I can sew a button and put quilts on my bed, but that is the extent of my imaginary needle skills. Having disclosed that sad truth, I went to this store with my pal, an awesome quilter. What a feast for the eyes! Beautiful fabrics, gifts and everything a quilter could need or want. I was looking at some merchandise and asked the purpose of this tubular item. It was for your seat belt so it won't cut into your neck. Well, I needed one and was so glad I asked! Now, when riding around in my car, I'll be sporting a nice, quilty, cozy neck protector which will remind me of our trip to Kauai evertime I get in the car. It's one of those small inexpensive souvenirs you are so glad you purchased!!
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Wow! I do not sew. I do not quilt. These facts did not obstruct me from being blown away by the amazing array of fabrics and needle craft products offered at Kapaia Stitchery. Best quality Hawaiian quilts, shirts, authentic gifts, classes, exclusive patterns and custom work of every description can be had here at reasonable prices. All products and services served up with ample aloha.
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
I have been going here every year I get to stay on Kauai. It is my second stop after checking into my condo.....but sometimes my first. I shop, ship and enjoy the incredible fabrics that I can't even find on Oahu. I now live in CA, so they are even more appropriate than in my original Ohio much less Texas where they actually wear cowboy boots with aloha shirts except in flip flop Austin.
google avatar

Rita S.

Yelp
QUILTER'S PARADISE IN PARADISE Oh my gosh...I could have spent hours and lots of $$$ in this place. Tons and tons of batiks, Japanese and Hawaiian prints. Lots of great kits and finished quilts on display. I'm not usually a kit person, but I purchased a Sashiko and applique kit designed by Sylvia Pippen. Her designs are so simple, but elegant and unusual. Prices are a little high ($3.75 for the least expensive fat quarter), but if this type of fabrics are your style, you'll be in paradise.
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
I am not a quilter, but browsing through Kapaia Stitchery makes me want to quilt. They have so many fun and colorful prints, and lots of quilting square sets sorted by color. I bought 3.5 yards each of two different Hawaiian print bolts to bring back as a gift for a friend who loves to sew. The Hawaiian print bolts are 60", and are only available in Hawaii. This is 33% longer than the typical bolt width of 45", which means you can get more pieces from a yard. This bolt width can also make certain projects much easier. I paid $6.32 per yard for the prints I bought. This was a very reasonable price, considering the insane markup on most other things of quality on the islands. The uber-helpful clerk said that all of the fabric they carry is 100% cotton. If you are visiting Kauai, I highly recommend bringing back some fabric as gifts for the quilters/seamstresses among your friends!
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
So organized, high quality products, and well stocked. Better than the shops on Oahu by far!
google avatar

Sandi M.

Yelp
This quilt shop was so colorful and welcoming that I had to stop by there twice during my stay on Kauai. The folks were professional and friendly. The prices were very reasonable and they had a lot of wonderful Hawaiian themed fabrics, patterns and gifts. It was inspiring. Even though it will be awhile before I can return to the island, I will be watching their Facebook page and purchasing directly in the future.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
What a wonderful store. Great selection and service. Reasonable prices. Really nice that local crafters can sell their creations at the shop as well. I am excited that they ship as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for fabric: even though I don't stitch or quilt I was still amazed by the fabric selection and almost bought fabric anyway. Pretty fun selection of local goods, including some adorable (hipster) tea towels from cane haul goods.
google avatar

Mimi L.

Yelp
Love this place! I was in the search for some Hawaiian quilt items and finally found them here. Beautiful Batiks and fabrics. Awesome quilt kits and handmade goodies. I would highly recommend This place.

Yelp
What a cute little hidden gem! I'm not into sewing, more of a knitter but I had to check this place out. Keep your eye for this place, it's easy to miss but right off the Wai Lua Falls turn off. This place has a large variety of beautiful hawaiian fabrics and patterns. The staff was very nice and helpful. They also have a nice selection of handmade crafts, art work, designs and even a few t-shirts.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Amazing assortment of Hawaiian print material. I almost knocked off one star cuz of the blasé attitude of the crew there, offered no help at all, but then I didn't ask for any. And it's an attitude I've encountered a lot on this visit so I think it's become an accepted approach maybe to people considered haoles (I'm not) in general. But I get it. Despite this, the store is remarkable for quliters/crafters and very much worth a visit.

Cris P.

Yelp
Visiting this store is a must for anyone who loves sewing or quilting. Large inventory of Hawaiian and Asian print fabrics in beautiful colors and great prices ($6.99 a yard). Many of the fabrics are available in precut lengths and fat quarters. These would make wonderful souvenir gifts. The staff are friendly and helpful. I felt very welcome there. Mahalo!
google avatar

Tara S.

Yelp
GREAT place for fabric fiends of all sorts. I am a beginning quilter and was completely overwhelmed by the range of fabrics there. They also sell kits and patterns for all sorts of Hawaiian fabric arts and even some Japanese fabrics and associated arts. Yes! Go!
google avatar

Aggie M.

Yelp
What a truly wonderful store. Set in a quaintly island building you walk into a rainbow of colors! The staff was very welcoming and friendly and offered fantastic suggestions. Come to Kauai and put this shop on your to do list.
google avatar

Ann B.

Yelp
I'm no seamstress, but stopped in to try and learn a bit about Hawaiian quilting. The staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful and made me feel right at home. They have a number of nice handmade gift items in addition to a large selection of aloha print fabrics and quilt patterns. Worth a stop even if you are not into needlework or crafts.
google avatar

Marge M.

Yelp
I had looked for Hawaiian fabrics on the mainland and was put off by the excessive per yard prices. A client told me about Kapaia Stitchery and what a treasure! We found a rich upholstery fabric for almost 1/2 what the Mainland stores were charging. The wonderful ladies there were more than helpful and a true delight. And if you don't see what you want, they will work with you to help find it! Lots of quilting items, bolts of fabric, accessories and cool items for sale...like the quilted baked potato cooker. My hubby isn't into this "stuff"...he was impressed and we spent an hour there. :)
google avatar

Kathi S.

Yelp
Love this place. My husband gets a hand made shirt every time we come here. I could buy lots of fabric but restrain myself. The people are great and very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Hawaiian print and Batik fabrics!!

B W.

Yelp
If there was a heaven for quilters, this would be it! I was blown away at the selection and beauty of this cute quilt shop in Kauai. The outside looks like a general store. There are many inspirational quilts hanging from the ceiling. The selection of Hawaiian fabrics was amazing. I had gone to Discount Fabric Warehouse and though I like that store very much, I just loved the feeling of the Kapaia Stitchery more. It felt cozy and homey. If I could live in that store, I would. I loved it that much.
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
A great store Kauai for fabrics, quilting supplies. and much more. Housed in a wonderful old building its a must see for anyone interested in fibre arts and crafts

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Super nice ladies, Beautiful Hawaiian fabrics, and reasonable prices. I'm glad I took the time to stop by the store. I purchased a precut pillow and wall hanging of traditional Hawaiian quilts that are appliquéd.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
I can get into a lot of trouble in this store on my future visits to Kauai. I am kind of glad that my husband did not take me here till the end of my trip. If you like to sew, this is the place for you. Keep room in your bags for the stuff you will buy here. They have a ton of Hawaiian and Asian inspired fabrics. Hawaiian Quilting kits, patterns, cross stitch patterns, and fat quarters of assorted fabrics that will make you dizzy as you go through them. I will be back on my next trip to Kauai for sure!
google avatar

Geoffrey M.

Yelp
The Stitchery is a beautiful slice of island culture. Walking you, see amazing examples of Island quilters and you're greeted by the gals who work there with a big Island smile. You're quickly drawn to the vast selection of fabrics available. For reasonable prices you can be measured and have custom Hawaiian shirts sew and shipped to you. Prices ran about $85 per shirt. Quality is excellent and people are always commenting on my shirts. It's on the way down island so make it a stop when you're there.
google avatar

J. K.

Yelp
Geoffrey and Mark have it right - if you want authentic shirts (or any other Hawaiiana which is stitched) you must stop at Kapaia. The Mrs and myself saw this place on a drive to Pt Allen for a boat trip, and we were pleased beyond word when we stopped in. While I was striclty forbidden from buying an Aloha shirt, I was amazed at the prices, workmanship, and the fact that they were'nt shipped in from overseas. Each shirt had great patterns, great workmanship, and great prices. I didn't see a shirt over $100 - but they all easily could have been if they were in a more "corporate" shop like Hilo Hattie, ABC, etc. What the Mrs and myself were happiest to see was the abundance of quilting samples, supplies, and finished quilts. We picked up a couple throw pillow covers and were very happy with what we bought. Julie was so personable and quite funny, we were very happy to support her. We're such fans that we've told all our family and friends about this place. It really should be your first stop if you're looking for stitched souvenirs!

Kathy B.

Yelp
I had to stop at a fabric store when on vacation in Kauai because I am an avid quilter and fabric junkie. This place was perfect! They had the Hawaiian prints I wanted with a wide selection of 1/2 yards already cut for fast shopping (good when others are waiting while you shop). The woman working was so nice and helpful. Can't wait to return!!!
