"Around one hour by car north of Wellington, Kapiti Island has been a protected wildlife reserve since 1897. Measuring less than eightsquare miles, the island can only be visited with a licensed tour operator; Kapiti Island Nature Tours is run by a local Maori family with historic links to the island, and their trips incorporate glimpses of birds, including the stout kereru (wood pigeon), and the endangered and flightless takahe. Marine life here includes a seal colony. Kapiti Island Nature Tours also offers overnight stays with the opportunity to witness the nocturnal activities of New Zealand's shy national bird, the kiwi."

I did the overnight experience, loved it. You can do a day trip, but everything is weather dependent. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. You don't have to walk the tracks, just sit and absorb...

The overnight trip with Kapiti Island Nature Tours was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had! My husband and I are honeymooning in New Zealand and we booked this experience because it sounded like a good place to see a kiwi. But we had no idea about the volume of other incredible birds that we would see on the island! When we first arrived at Rangatira we were greeted with a lovely history and bird lesson by Tim and Dave. We immediately saw Weka walking around and Kaka flying overhead. We hiked up to the summit where (on a clear day) you would get a great view from the lookout tower. There we enjoyed a delicious lunch from Two Fat Chefs that came included with the tour package. Then we were ferried to Waiorua, where we got to learn more about land ownership of Kapiti Island and the family that runs the tour. Our guide Anthony was so kind as he showed us the lodge and our cabin, and made us feel immediately welcomed. We then had delicious snacks and dinner prepared by Ben; he made the best vegan cheesy pasta I've ever had! On our night tour we saw two Little Blue Penguins and a Kiwi! It was such a surreal experience. Waking up and hearing the birdsong from our cabin's porch was a wonderful way to start the next day. We loved everything about the excursion! And shout-out to Te Aihe for their great ferry rides! Thank you to everyone who helped with this unforgettable experience!

Kapiti island, Its all about the journey not the destination. As you walk in the bush, stopping along the way, being still , being quiet and listening is when the magic happens… flora and birds in abundance.

If you live in Kapiti region you need to do the trip to Kapiti Island, The island is steeped in history and shows what can be done with time and hard work to turn back the clock to what New Zealand looked like in the past.

Beautiful place, great for hiking and bird watching opportunities. The island itself is so serene and pretty. We did a nighttime kiwi spotting hike and saw quite a few. this sanctuary is also home to many other native new Zealand birds like the Kaka and others.

Great place so peaceful with the limited number of people allowed. Saw native wildlife that you most likely won't see any where else as easily as Kapiti. Will be back for an overnight stay while h would be fantastic.
