One of the oldest buildings in Fort St. Angelo is the St. Anna Chapel, the existence of which is first mentioned in a document from 1274. The history of the building of this location, the highest point of the promontory, goes back (it is assumed) much further: in ancient times, the Phoenician temple of Astarte stood here. The pink granite pillar in the chapel is said to have been from this temple. The current chapel was probably built around 1430 by the De Nava family. Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam enlarged the chapel in 1532 and converted it into his personal chapel. During the French Occupation, the chapel was closed and the British used the building first as an arms and ammunition depot and later as a school. During the interbellum, the chapel was reconsecrated and remained in use as a place of worship until it was closed in 1979. The chapel was restored in 1994 and has been fully open to the public again since 2019.
