On the Grid : Kaprica Pizza

"Carlton is a mecca for Italian foods and there are a handful of great places to eat pizza and pasta to your hearts content - but Kaprica really knows how it's done. Like really, really knows. Offerings are handwritten onto A4 sheets of paper, outlining a honest menu of pizza, pasta and drinks. If you head to Kaprica, make sure you're hungry because once you start, you won't want to stop." - Seven Seeds

The restaurant stands to the hype and popularity it has. It’s ultimate chaos but still harmonious with good food and ambience. Friendly service. We had one of the best tiramisu which was suggested by the service staff. Had asked for a slice of cake for my wife as it was her birthday, mentioned this in the reservation booking also. Looks like they missed it.

The tables were really cramped, sitting too close to strangers and servers struggled to get through. They should rethink the layout. Food was decent. The mains came almost immediately after the entrees, which didn’t give us time or space on the small table. The atmosphere was warm and pleasant though.

We were shown to a table set for two, and after letting the staff know we had booked for four, they simply added two extra chairs to the same small table — leaving us all feeling extremely squished, especially once drinks and meals arrived. After we sat down, the waiter came over almost immediately and asked if we were ready to order. When we politely said we’d just sat down and needed a little more time, he didn’t return for over half an hour. It felt unnecessarily petty and dismissive. Trying to get anyone’s attention after that was nearly impossible — we couldn’t tell who was actually a waiter and who wasn’t. The casual vibe is nice, but it would really help if staff wore something identifiable (like name tags or aprons). When we finally did get someone’s attention and asked a couple of simple questions (like how many prawns come in the entrée serve), we got short, one-word answers without eye contact. There was no friendliness, no effort to engage, and the overall tone came across as rude and uninterested. Unfortunately, this wasn’t just one waiter — every staff member we interacted with seemed similarly dismissive. It’s a real shame, because the food was genuinely delicious. But the service completely ruined the experience. For the $100+ per person we spent, we expected at least some basic warmth and attentiveness. Perhaps the restaurant was understaffed, but better training in customer service and communication would make a huge difference.

My partner and I came to Kaprica for our anniversary dinner in May and were extremely unimpressed. Firstly, the server seated us on the second floor directly next to another couple. The entire floor was empty except for that couple, I’m not sure why they seated us elbow to elbow. We ordered caprese salad, so boring. A pasta and 2 pizzas, all of which were randomly INCREDIBLY spicy. It was really odd as we are people who can tolerate pretty much any level of spice but we were picking the chilli off which was everywhere btw. The pizzas was terrible and when we lifted each slice the entire toppings slipped off. It was literally so terrible I’m still thinking about it how terrible it was 4 months later.

Lovely Italian restaurant with good food. Bustling and romantic both at the same time. I was pleasantly surprised at how full the restaurant was, The food was good. Service could have been a bit friendlier. And the seat in the front of door wasn’t pleasant. It was cold on my back and the servers booking/ greeting station was right at my back. We did ask could we sit on the couch when we arrived as it was all empty and she said it was booked out. By the time we finished and ready to leave no one arrived for the couch. Which was disappointing considering the discomfort of our table.

I had a nice time catching up with my friend and we enjoyed our time. I didn’t mind the tight space, it felt cosy and wholesome. I definitely rate the Mr John pizza and the salad with rocket and parmesan. The veal meatball pasta dish was a little bland but I will say the meat was tender and juicy. Our wines were great. We enjoyed the Trebbianco and the Shiraz. The service was alright. Some of the wait staff didn’t look like they wanted to be at work and I completely understand that. Work can suck, especially in facing roles, but that doesn’t mean you don’t try a little. The dishes came out hot and fast, but it felt like it was made with passion. Overall, it was pretty good.

----- ORDERED ----- • Pappardelle (Lamb shoulder ragu) • Gnocchi Sorrentina • Mr John pizza • House foccacia ----- FOOD ----- *Food was similarly priced as other restaurants in the area - expensive* • The ragu pasta is a crowd favourite, rich umami flavours and salted perfectly - however the pasta was not al dente, perhaps it is meant to be served like this but I just found it a bit tough. • Solid gnocchi, very soft and the sauce itself was very simple but flavoursome. • The Mr John pizza is definably recommended, the hot salami tasted great and did a lot of heavy lifting for the pizza. • The foccacia was dense as hell, it would probably sink if you put it in a tub of water, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It tasted great - especially dipped in the olive oil ----- SERVICE ----- • Uhhhh tbh the waitress we got provided good recommendations and attended to us well but she wasn't really all that friendly. Must've just been one of those days so can't blame her (It was a Monday afterall). • Second waitress we interacted with was very friendly. ----- CONSENSUS ----- RECOMMEND (It was alright)
