On the Grid : Kaprica Pizza

"Carlton is a mecca for Italian foods and there are a handful of great places to eat pizza and pasta to your hearts content - but Kaprica really knows how it's done. Like really, really knows. Offerings are handwritten onto A4 sheets of paper, outlining a honest menu of pizza, pasta and drinks. If you head to Kaprica, make sure you're hungry because once you start, you won't want to stop." - Seven Seeds

Great homestyle Italian in an unpretentious setting. Rigatoni with lamb & potato pizza were lovely. Portions were generous and we split one pasta and one pizza between two which was just right. As others have noted, tables are quite close together so when busy it gets very loud.

Very cosy, buzzing ambiance with a lot of seating slightly packed together, but gives it a down to earth vibe. The service was great, and wine was delectable!! Probably the highlight was the Sicilian bottle of red we shared. The pasta was decent, we had the meatballs and the lamb ragu - of which were tasty, good portions but not out of this world. The tiramisu was also a nice sweet treat to finish up with. Would defo come back to try the pizza.

Lovely Italian restaurant with good food. Bustling and romantic both at the same time. I was pleasantly surprised at how full the restaurant was, The food was good. Service could have been a bit friendlier. And the seat in the front of door wasn’t pleasant. It was cold on my back and the servers booking/ greeting station was right at my back. We did ask could we sit on the couch when we arrived as it was all empty and she said it was booked out. By the time we finished and ready to leave no one arrived for the couch. Which was disappointing considering the discomfort of our table.

Our fav spot in Carlton. Great food, delicious flavours and generous serving. Buzzing atmosphere yet quiet enough to have a table conversations . Booking is a must. Great location and near great gelato spots.

The Margherita pizza was cooked well, crunchy and doughy on the crust with a thin base and plenty of the tomato sauce and generous amounts of cheese and basil. Only downside is that it was sloppy in the middle. The atmosphere was great also, the only downside is that the tables were a little close together and squashed and the wait staff were hard to get a hold of to fill our glasses of water.

After hearing so many glowing recommendations, I was excited to finally try Kaprica. The restaurant has a cosy, homey Italian vibe, with rustic furniture and a bustling atmosphere on Grattan St, just off Lygon. Unfortunately, my experience didn’t quite live up to the expectations. The service was disorganised from the start - we had a booking but were passed between multiple staff members before finally being seated. Despite ordering shortly after our 7:30pm booking, no food arrived until 8:30pm. The restaurant was busy, but many of our entrees required little to no prep, making the wait frustrating. We constantly had to follow up on orders, and even after asking for the dessert menu, it never arrived. The food itself had some highlights but was inconsistent: - House focaccia with olive oil (2 pieces for $5) - Decent, but was cold - Bresaola with rocket & parmesan ($22) - Simple and enjoyable. - Antipasto plate ($26) - The veggies and salami were great, but the olives were unexpectedly spicy to the point of being overwhelming. - Spaghetti with veal & pork meatballs ($30) - Probably my favourite dish, the meatballs were well done - Rigatoni with lamb shoulder ragu ($30) - Pasta was nicely al dente but the sauce was too salty. - Potato pizza ($30) - Surprisingly good, with a nice base - Gamberi Piccanti Pizza ($30) - Good base, but the insane spice level made it hard to enjoy. We also ordered a bottle of chilled red from barossa valley for $65 but it was unexpectedly clear, tasting sour almost like Kombucha - I’ll admit this was more a mistake on my behalf for not asking or looking more into the wine. And then, to top it off, we saw a rather large mouse (praying it was not a rat) run through the restaurant. I really wanted to love Kaprica, but between the service issues, long wait times, and inconsistent dishes, it didn’t live up to the hype. I hope it was just an off night, but after checking more reviews, it seems like others have had similar service experiences.

Great date night spot, staff are friendly, food is delicious and vibes are spot on. Came here for Mother’s day too, mum loved it! Well priced pasta dishes! Lamb ragu is 10/10 and i’m not a huge meat eater…

The food was fine I guess, but the service was terrible. It took so long for staff to take an order, but it was somewhat understandable since the place was packed. We order 3 drink, 1 focaccia, 1 pizza, 1 pasta, 1 salad. 10+ minute later he drinks arrived. We had to wait about 30-40 minutes for the food. One of my friends went to ask a staff member about our food, and then the salad and pasta were served. Both dishes, which should have taken about 10 minutes to make, took almost an hour to arrive. The food was very basic, with no standout flavors. And 20 minute later, the other dishes still hadn't arrived. By this point, we were starving, so we decided to ask how much longer the food would take. If it hadn't been cooked yet, we wanted the bill. They said it would be 5 more minutes, so we waited. When the food finally arrived, the owner (or manager, not sure) slammed the dishes onto our table and yelled in my friend's face. He said, 'You pushed us' and 'There are a lot of customers in this restaurant.'" I do understand that they are packed that day but it’s not our responsibility to be treated this way for their poor management. It seemed like they were understaffed. They shouldn't take in so many customers if they can't handle serving them efficiently. Overall, the experience was horrible. Not once did they apologize to us, which I saw is typical based on Google reviews. I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy.
