After hearing so many glowing recommendations, I was excited to finally try Kaprica. The restaurant has a cosy, homey Italian vibe, with rustic furniture and a bustling atmosphere on Grattan St, just off Lygon. Unfortunately, my experience didn’t quite live up to the expectations.
The service was disorganised from the start - we had a booking but were passed between multiple staff members before finally being seated. Despite ordering shortly after our 7:30pm booking, no food arrived until 8:30pm. The restaurant was busy, but many of our entrees required little to no prep, making the wait frustrating. We constantly had to follow up on orders, and even after asking for the dessert menu, it never arrived.
The food itself had some highlights but was inconsistent:
- House focaccia with olive oil (2 pieces for $5) - Decent, but was cold
- Bresaola with rocket & parmesan ($22) - Simple and enjoyable.
- Antipasto plate ($26) - The veggies and salami were great, but the olives were unexpectedly spicy to the point of being overwhelming.
- Spaghetti with veal & pork meatballs ($30) - Probably my favourite dish, the meatballs were well done
- Rigatoni with lamb shoulder ragu ($30) - Pasta was nicely al dente but the sauce was too salty.
- Potato pizza ($30) - Surprisingly good, with a nice base
- Gamberi Piccanti Pizza ($30) - Good base, but the insane spice level made it hard to enjoy.
We also ordered a bottle of chilled red from barossa valley for $65 but it was unexpectedly clear, tasting sour almost like Kombucha - I’ll admit this was more a mistake on my behalf for not asking or looking more into the wine.
And then, to top it off, we saw a rather large mouse (praying it was not a rat) run through the restaurant.
I really wanted to love Kaprica, but between the service issues, long wait times, and inconsistent dishes, it didn’t live up to the hype. I hope it was just an off night, but after checking more reviews, it seems like others have had similar service experiences.
