The Best Hotels in Crete

"Crete's glorious beaches are difficult to resist, but if you want to experience a slice of the island's more authentic charms head inland to Kapsaliana, a stone-built village buried in olive groves and sweet-scented citrus orchards a few miles from 16th-century Arkadi, one of the island's best-known monasteries. As patient as the ant in Aesop’s fable, the resort’s architect-owner Myron Toupogianis has been buying houses in the village since the 1970s and restoring them as rooms and suites linked by a warren of cobbled paths and original features. Think lofty timber-beamed ceilings, writing desks made from the giant pitted stone wheels of an olive press and beds handcrafted from sweet-scented olive wood – along with plenty of modern extras, including plump beds and walk-in showers. This beautifully restored village centres on a raised terrace where traditional Cretan-inspired breakfasts and dinners are served beneath the perfumed shade of citrus trees. Price: from $215 per nightAddress: Καψαλιανά 741 50, Greece"

Outstanding hotel where within minutes we completely relaxed. |Staff were absolutely lovely, really helpful and kind with the bar and restaurant staff being particularly brilliant. |Check in was super easy and reception staff couldn’t have been more helpful. |We loved the pool and spent most of our time there doing very little! |Our room was great - good size terrace with views over the hills and in the distance, to the sea.|The food is wonderful - from breakfast to dinner. |We had planed to rent a motorbike and explore, but on arrival just enjoyed the hotel!|We loved the hotel dog and cat, Oliver!

I came home from Kapsaliana on 25th June and honestly, I have never missed a place so much. I needed a peaceful and restorative holiday after a difficult couple of years; I couldn't have asked for a better place. |From the moment I arrived I felt my shoulders drop. The grounds are beautiful and have been sympathetically restored and maintained. I spent a lot of time just sitting and soaking up the view and the atmosphere. |Eating breakfast on the terrace, with the smell of jasmine in the air, was a joyous experience for me every day. The food was superb - a huge and varied spread for breakfast, something for all palates. I ate dinner at the restaurant on 8/9 nights of my stay and every meal was delicious.|I stayed in the Pegasus room which has it's own spacious terrace. I chose this room partly for the seclusion and because I was travelling alone but I did also spend some time down at the pool which was delightful. |I enjoyed a wine tasting and an olive oil tasting, both were excellent and so informative. I have been putting olive oil on pineapple, ice-cream, chocolate - you name it - since I came home!|I used the gym a few times to try and counteract the calories from all of the superb food and cocktails. I'm not much of a gym goer but it was very well equipped.|Finally, the staff were all so friendly and helpful and I grew to really like them during my stay. Particular thanks to Kostis, Irini, Stelios, Arkis, Michael, Anthi, and Perocles - apologies for any spelling mistakes! |I dream about the Kapsaliana Village and I hope I am lucky enough to stay there again soon.

Phenomenal hotel with incredible amenities and views over North Cretan coastline. The hotel aims to capture and preserve the beauty of an old olive grove and olive press, as well as the community that once maintained it. Dinners were also fantastic at their restaurant. Highly recommend this as a stay!

This is truly a magical place. You can tell this was a passion project for the owner where every detail was considered. You can feel the essence of living in an old Greek village. It is definitely a paradise if you are looking for a place that is relaxing and tranquil. We enjoyed olive oil martinis by the pool. It’s an easy 20-30 minute drive to Rethymno which was easily our favorite city in Greece with its beaches and charming shopping district. The breakfast buffet (which was included in the nightly rate) was EXCELLENT (fresh Greek pastries, hot options, fresh fruit, coffee bar, and fresh squeezed orange juice)! Every staff member made us feel welcomed and cared for. Trust me just book it and thank me later.

The hotel is located up in the hills, far away from the hustle and bustle.|If you like nature, the outdoors, trekking, or running, it’s a perfect choice. Lovely paths take you past small farms with sheep and goats — charming!||The hotel is exceptional in every way. Hats off to the architect, who managed to preserve the essence and spirit of the old olive mill while making it beautifully modern. Truly a remarkable place.||The restaurant is just fantastic — traditional Greek food with a modern twist. There wasn’t a single dish we didn’t like.|The staff is exceptional: kind, friendly, helpful, and always looking after you.|Special thanks to Stelios, who also hosted the wine tasting for us — it was very special!||We will definitely come back another time!

As others have said, a really wonderful hotel and holiday, simple & sophisticated with a lovely sense of spaciousness and peace. We loved the planting and landscaping, the pool, the breakfast and the homemade lemonade. We had such a special holiday we hope to return. Totally recommend!

We stayed two nights in the hotel. Amazing garden, very good food, very calm, very friendly staff, so all very good on that side. However, the rooms themselves are decent, but they don’t justify the high prices per night. Shower, bed, etc. are just modest. Most materials and furniture used in the rooms look relatively cheap and are not of a very good quality. So all together: very good experience, but strongly over priced

This is, without a doubt, the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed in. The way the village has been restored has kept all the charm and quirkiness whilst modernising all the facilities. They are constantly restoring more parts of the village to add more rooms, dining areas and ourdoor space. It is so peaceful and away from the crowds on the coast and the staff are amazing helping with any request and making your stay as wonderful as they can. |The food is stunning, all local dishes made from produce grown onsite or locally, cooked to perfection and served with theatre to make eating a whole experience rather than a neccessity. They organised a private dinner for my wife's birthday in the Olive Museum which was romantic and amazing and went out of their way to make it special. |The local village - Amnatos, is charming, historic and has a great local taverna. |Have a car as there are a wide range of places to visit no more than 30 mins away and don't worry if the satnav takes you down what you think is a track.. the local roads are a mixed bunch. |My only comment would be to provide some softer pillows :-)
