The Best Hotels in Crete

"Crete's glorious beaches are difficult to resist, but if you want to experience a slice of the island's more authentic charms head inland to Kapsaliana, a stone-built village buried in olive groves and sweet-scented citrus orchards a few miles from 16th-century Arkadi, one of the island's best-known monasteries. As patient as the ant in Aesop’s fable, the resort’s architect-owner Myron Toupogianis has been buying houses in the village since the 1970s and restoring them as rooms and suites linked by a warren of cobbled paths and original features. Think lofty timber-beamed ceilings, writing desks made from the giant pitted stone wheels of an olive press and beds handcrafted from sweet-scented olive wood – along with plenty of modern extras, including plump beds and walk-in showers. This beautifully restored village centres on a raised terrace where traditional Cretan-inspired breakfasts and dinners are served beneath the perfumed shade of citrus trees. Price: from $215 per nightAddress: Καψαλιανά 741 50, Greece"

This was our third time staying at Kapsaliana, and I’m not sure yet if we’ll return. It’s a beautiful property. It is very remote, so if you like being near everything, this won’t be a good fit for you. We find its location is nice, though. The accommodations are always clean, and the food is wonderful. However, in the past, the service was the best part of Kapsaliana. Everyone who worked there genuinely seemed to love it and the guests. During our most recent visit (and our longest yet) we felt like the hospitality was very much lacking especially from the restaurant staff. We also were never thanked for being repeat guests despite hearing several others during our stay being thanked and being given gifts. We also appreciated how intimate it was when we first started going, and it seems that many new villas are added each time we go back. Breakfast felt especially crowded, so I can only imagine how it will feel in another few years. We’ve gone out of our way to travel there, but truthfully it’s a very long trip for us and one I don’t know we’ll make again.

We absolutely loved our stay at the idyllic Kapsaliana Village! What a beautiful location and setting up in the mountains overlooking the sea of Crete in the distance. The former deserted village has been restored to perfection. Our room or, rather villa, was very nice, with its own terrace and sun beds. The bed was very comfortable and we had all the creature comforts and everything we needed in our villa. The pool was absolutely devine as was the food. OMG the buffet breakfast was the best I have ever had! Amazing. The gardens are absolutely beautiful too. If you’re looking for something off the beaten track but easy to get to from Rethmyno, out of the touristy areas but with a touch of authenticity then this place is for you!

About 400m metres above sea level nestled in the foothills of the mountains 1km from a pretty village with two tavernas. It is actually a small village itself once deserted converted into a hotel and ground with just 25 rooms it is truly stunning if you are looking for a luxury hideaway with stunning views of greenery. Lots of things within reach totally recommended

What a great resort! Excellent on all fronts - views, facilities, staff, restaurant. The entire hotel is a remodeled small Greek village - so it’s extremely charming and the facilities are gorgeous. Our room included a large living area and a very private balcony with views of the canyon, perfect for sipping wine in the evening or enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning. The breakfast at the restaurant is amazing! You need a car to stay here, since it was out of the way from the coastal cities, in the hills. However, it is within driving distance of a few charming villages with cafes and tavernas, so you can enjoy a nice local dinner on your way back from a day trip. Highly recommend this hotel/resort. And best of all, it is a part of Hyatt system, so you can accumulate points in Hyatt.

What a wonderful place. The location, the comfort, the staff make this place an idyll. Much has been said already but we can't think of anywhere better that we have stayed. It is not like staying in a hotel as the restored village allows you to amble from your room to the bars, to the dining room (terrace or inside) to the pool. All in beautifully landscaped gardens. The Eliai restaurant serves superb 'modern' Cretan food - don't over-order as the potions are large. The breakfast buffet has everything fro fresh fruit to pastries to eggs - so much you won't need lunch. However a significant part of the charm is in its lovely staff )and Oliver the house cat).

A truly authentic boutique hotel, the room was clean and spacious. The whole place felt homely and was well kept and managed to retain the Cretan feel which can be hard to find these days on an island of square box villas. ||We enjoyed the feel of the whole site, very cleverly designed and broken up like a true village. Splendid atmosphere, the food and breakfast were relaxing and peaceful. ||Service and staff were to a high standard - the menu was maybe a touch pricey and could benefit from a few casual options. ||There isn’t a huge amount to do in the area but we knew this and because the site is so nice it didn’t matter anyway. ||This was our favourite out of the 3 hotels we stayed in on a 9 day holiday. ||Thanks

Abolutely lovely place to stay in Crete. It IS off the beaten path, but that is one of it's charms. You feel like you are staying in an ancient village but luxurious of course. The restaurant is magnificent...really excellent food and a destination in itself. I had a rental car and was very happy, took some day trips that were recommended by the staff. 3 nights would be a good stay to explore and enjoy.

This is the perfect getaway for peace and quiet. The hotel has preserved the traditional aspects of this old Cretan village. Every room has it's own individual style, which is lovely. There is a welcome drink and a tour offered at check-in. The room itself (we had the Hyades room) was very spacious with all amenities needed. I particularly enjoyed the bath products. Cute little swimming pool with yummie snacks and drinks and the best fries i have ever had. Staff is friendly and attentive. Breakfast options were good, a few traditional Cretan products as well. Good coffee.
