Hiakai – Wellington, New Zealand - Gastro Obscura

"Hiakai means “hungry” or “having a craving to eat” in te reo Māori, the Māori language. At Hiakai, a restaurant in Wellington, New Zealand, chef Monica Fiso’s seeks to feed the Māori hunger to finally see their culture celebrated by the mainstream. Telling Māori stories through locally farmed and foraged ingredients is typical of Fiso, who draws on her Māori, Sāmoan, and European roots, as well as her training in posh New York restaurants, to craft a menu centering New Zealand’s long-neglected indigenous foods. Take, for example, Fiso’s seed-coated avocado with vinaigrette made from karamū, a native shrub. It represents Mount Pihanga, a New Zealand volcano that Māori people consider feminine, and who inspired seven male mountains to fight for her love in a classic tale. The menu at Hiakai combines haute cuisine techniques—“foams” and “essences” abound—as well as traditional Māori cooking styles, such as hāngi earthen ovens, which European colonialism either marginalized or misinterpreted. With dishes like kūmara (sweet potato) gnocchi with fried huhu grubs to kina sea urchin pannacotta with with kuku mussels, it’s obvious that at Hiakai, promoting and preserving Māori food culture comes first. Know Before You Go Hiakai exclusively serves a seven course tasting menu, and is reservation-only. Slots in the small dining room fill up months in advance, so book early." - Reina Gattuso

We had the eggs Benedict and a burger, and both were absolutely delicious. The food was fresh, well presented, and full of flavor. The iced latte was next level, one of the best I’ve had in Wellington. Great spot with a nice atmosphere, highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing! The staff are lovely, kai was top quality, you will not regret eating here. As a Maori the environment and energy made me feel right home!. ✨❤️ Gorgeous ocean view whilst eating was just a bonus☀️ Ngā mihi nui ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Got here as part of a Weta Workshop halfday tour. The menu did sound interesting, that's why I signed up for the tour that included lunch here, but it was a huge disappointment. The corn fritters, my starter, was pretty okay. But the Hangi - note that I'm definitely not familiar with this cuisine and can't judge its authenticity - was just a lot of overcooked potatoes and extremely dry pieces of meat. I didn't know meat could be this dry, there wasn't a drip of juice left on there! I couldn't finish my meal, because it was so unsatisfactory, and left still kinda hungry.

What I particularly love about this place is their location and the gorgeous view they have over the lagoon! It’s so nice sitting outside enjoying a coffee and the relaxing atmosphere. The food and drinks are good though too and the staff are nice and welcoming. You can send your order from your table using a QR code, which is easy and convenient.

Lovely staff with amazing hospitality that made us feel welcome. The food was good overall – the halloumi could’ve used something carb-y on the side and the kumara/pumpkin purée was a bit too salty, which came with halloumi but the eggs bene was spot on. Sitting outside with the view felt super relaxed and made the experience even better.

Had the most delightful brunch at Karaka Cafe today! Perfectly priced menu for my whānau of four, with beautiful service and a kids’ menu that kept my baby entertained. Loved the parent-friendly bathroom setup for easy changing. Food was stunning in both taste and presentation, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere (with lovely music!) made it even better. Highly recommend for any occasion!

My partner and I love this spot. We arrived at opening time for some breakfast , and greeted and seated immediately and given a breakfast menu. There was a good selection of items on the menu. The food we had was delicious, and the staff were awesome. This is now a lock-in for us whenever we are in Wellington again. We are really looking forward to our next visit, as we will be looking at the dinner menu!!!

Google
$36 for brunch felt too expensive, especially with the food quality look at my egg benedict what the helly 😭 imagine you waited an hour for gorge egg benedict and got this haha.. so i asked for a new one felt a bit sorry.. We waited an hour for our meals, and even the two tables next to us were asking when their food was coming. Definitely some issues with getting dishes out. I don’t mind waiting a bit, but an hour was too much. I was hoping to enjoy good food and a yapping w your company in the sunshine but it turned into just chatting while waiting On top of that, I added $6 sausage and $6 baked beans, which were forgotten from my dish. When they finally brought them out, it was literally one piece of sausage for $6. The add ons felt overpriced compared to what you actually get. the customer service was amazing though the staff were friendly and wholesome, which made the experience better. The location is also perf with a great waterfront atmosphere! If you’re after a spot with good vibes and views, it’s worth a visit. But compared with other Wellington cafes, it didn’t feel worth the price for the food.

Yelp
Service seems a bit disorganized and really slow! Love this location, most the servers lovely, 1 or 2 not handling busy Sunday rush. Come early for really busy by 11:30am. French toast good no complaints and Breakfast Burger okay I did not care for the actual burger but maybe it's a American thing. Drinks 10/10 sangria and hazy pale ale

Yelp
Relaxing on bean bags on the waterfront in the sun drinking ice cold beers listening to funky music! Great vibe and friendly staff! Could spend all summer here.

Yelp
I came here with a friend only two days after NZ moved to Alert Level 2 for Covid-19. Their processes regarding hygiene and physical distancing are excellent. They are professional, but friendly and informal. Everything was great. Seating is well managed, coffee is good, there's lots on the menu and the staff are lovely. My companion enjoyed a really delicious looking Spinach & Feta muffin - I wished I'd had one too. Very relaxed and enjoyable place. Thank you.

Yelp
Only had a beer, but great service, great location, awesome vibes with cool music. Chilling out the front next to the water on comfy bean bags. Cool New Zealand bar.

Yelp
If you're looking for local NZ dishes, this is your place! Setting is beautifully located on a the Wellington waterfront (with beanbags out front for relaxing with beer when the weather is good). We ordered the Hangi Pizza, Steak Sandwich & a Chicken Caesar Burger with a side of Kumara fries. The pizza was lovely, with the special Hangi topping (which I'm told is meat cooked on hot rocks underground), the burger was great too and the steak sandwich was perfect served on 1 slice of bread with caramelised onions & mushrooms. Service was excellent also.

Yelp
The wait for the food was long and when we got it it was cold , I would not go back. This is the first time I have written a review as I feel so strong about our bad experience there
