Kardomah Cafe - Gastro Obscura

"On the corner of Portland and Park street in central Swansea, South Wales, stands the very last of what was once a chain of coffee shops. Ever since 1970, the Luporini family have run this popular local spot as an independent operation. The Kardomah Cafes, which were popular from the early 1900s to the 1960s, were created by the Liverpool China and India Tea Company. The name stems from a brand of tea that the company first sold in 1887 and was later applied to the coffee shops. By the 1960s the brand became defunct. Now the only Kardomah left is the Swansea branch, which opened originally in 1957, replacing the previous location which was destroyed in the Blitz of 1941. The cafe has a particular cult appeal due to the associations with the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who once described the original Kardomah as “My Home Sweet Homah.” Subsequently the cafe was used as a location in the Dylan Thomas biographical movie Set Fire To The Stars, starring Elijah Wood, as well as in a Christmas special episode of Dr. Who. Stepping inside Kardomah Cafe, visitors will find that the charming original interior remains virtually untouched since 1957, including Formica tables with a design of coffee beans, Sputnik-style coat racks, mosaic-tiled columns and dark wood panelling. Some of the same staff from over 30 years ago still work there, all helping to foster the family culture enjoyed by the customers. The menu boasts such classic British cafe items as full English breakfasts, roast dinners, cream teas and knickerbocker glories, as well as wonderful coffee. Where possible food is sourced locally, such as sausages from the Gower Butcher, fresh salmon from Coakley Greens, and fruit and vegetables from Swansea market. Know Before You Go Grab a bag of the cafe's specially roasted coffee beans to take home." - jackgrafik

When I was growing up my mum used to take us here on our birthdays for a treat. I always had a Knickerbocker glory for pudding. This place fell off my radar for about 30ish years then though. So I was in Swansea and remembered this place and thought I'd try it out again. Well it didn't disappoint at all. The food, service and atmosphere are amazing. It took me back to being a kid again. It is now my favourite place to eat in Swansea.

I was recommended to visit Kardomah by a friend who is a local to Swansea. He said it was a true Swansea icon and it really was! The food was just good standard UK food with no bells and whistles but exactly what you would want but it was the staff which took this place to the next level. They were so friendly, so helpful and so welcoming. I was on my way to a festival and they gave me tips and hints for the weekend. They even offered their help with getting me there. I was almost sorry to leave and get on with the rest of my weekend. I could have stayed all day!

**5/5 Stars - A Timeless Gem in Swansea!** My daughter and I had a wonderful visit to The Kardomah Restaurant on **Wednesday, May 28, 2025**, and once again, it did not disappoint! The customer service was incredibly efficient and friendly, making our experience enjoyable from start to finish. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had the delicious **beef dinner**, and my daughter loved her **house burger**. Both dishes were perfectly cooked, and the portions were generous—excellent value for money! I've been coming to The Kardomah since I was a child with my family, and it truly is a Swansea institution that has *never* let me down over the years. The quality and charm remain consistently high. I highly recommend The Kardomah to anyone seeking fantastic food, great service, and a truly classic dining experience in Swansea. It’s a place filled with cherished memories and consistently good food!

My partner and I went here the other week and the service was fabulous, really friendly and attentive staff. We had a full English, a Spanish omelette, and the house special of Greek lemon chicken which was out of this world! The portion sizes are great and the prices affordable! The coffee was also smooth and delicious!! Would definitely recommend :)

This old school cafe doesn’t need my review, it’s just wonderful. Take a step back in time and enjoy a traditional cafe with great food and attentive staff. The way they look after their older customers is just heartwarming. Don’t miss this treat if you’re passing.

Amazing food and service. The cheesecake was deliciously extra ordinary. Very friendly customer service.

What a lovely cafe to take the weight off in after a day of shopping and to be properly looked after by the staff. My mum used to come here with her gran when she was young & she says it was the same then too. Brilliant food, brilliant value for money and a real nostalgic atmosphere. Blows some of the more modern cafes in Swansea out the water.

Food was of a high standard. Plenty of home made touches like freshly made salads and unusually their own blends of coffee. I had the jacket potatoe with tuna .it was presented professionally and the staff were very friendly and amiable. Thankyou.

The original Kardomah Café was on Castle Street, before the war. This was where Dylan Thomas and a group of writers, artists and musicians who called themselves the Kardomah Gang used to gather. It was bombed out during WWII, and the current Kardomah Café is in a different location. It is like going back in time there's a booth to pay your bill, waitresses in uniform, a dessert trolley, a display of coffee paraphernalia, and you can buy freshly roasted and ground coffee at the front. I've been here twice once for a full English breakfast (which was passable) which came with a vile cup of coffee, and the second time, just for coffee, with the vague hope that the last coffee had been a mistake, or the free coffee with breakfasts is dire by default. After all, with all that coffee at the front of the shop, you'd think they were experts, right? No. The coffee I had was equally vile. Supposedly an Americano, it tasted of strong instant coffee, or filter coffee that was filtered a long time ago, and has gradually been evapourated over several hours into a concentrated gloop, then served luke warm with a greasy film on top. It was horrible, and I don't know what on earth possessed me to drink it. Determined to get my £1.80's worth, I suppose. Never again.
