Karl Johan Hotel (Oslo, Norway) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Karl Johan Hotel sits at the intersection of Norway’s past and present, its Berlin Baroque façade looking out onto a street that has hosted royal processions, national holidays, and generations of flâneurs. What began in the 1800s as a timber guesthouse has evolved into a character-rich property spread across three historic buildings, each room slightly different in layout, view, and personality. Mornings begin with one of the city’s best breakfasts, and end, often, perched on a windowsill with a coffee, watching the world go by." - Tablet Hotels

American family of 4 - we had an excellent stay here while at Oslo. The hotel is in a terrific location - walkable to Aker Brygge, very short walk to Royal Palace, and longer but doable walks to other places ( or take the tram). If you are an American used to uninspired free hotel breakfasts, you will be amazed with the breakfast at this hotel - which is nice because this hotel is not cheap by American standards. One thing I wish I would have known is the street noise associated with this hotel on the weekends - constant drum thumping from about 10p - 3 am - have to wonder if staying on a non street facing room would help. (We were on second floor facing the Main Street). Bring some earplugs if you are staying on a weekend night.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Karl Johan Hotel in Oslo. To start with, the location is very good - it is right on Karl Johan's Gate, which is the main pedestrian street going between the train station and the royal palace. It is maybe a 5-minute walk to the harbor front and all major sites in Oslo are easily accessible. There's also plenty of bars and restaurants near the hotel. The room was clean and comfortable (although I will admit that the shower was pretty small). And for being that central, it was pretty quiet. I happened to be in Oslo when it was in the mid-to-upper 80s, but the hotel is air conditioned, so it was comfortable. The breakfast buffet is large and has a great variety of foods for all tastes. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We stayed at Karl Johan Hotel for three nights, and I honestly can’t say enough good things about it. The location is amazing — right on Oslo’s main street, with everything just a short walk away. You really feel like you’re in the heart of the city.||The room was beautiful! Super clean, stylish without being over-the-top, and the bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in. We also really appreciated the small touches, like the nice toiletries and how quiet the room was, even though we were in such a central spot.||Breakfast was incredible. Fresh fruit, warm pastries, great coffee, eggs, salmon, and so many options — we looked forward to it every morning. Honestly, one of the best hotel breakfasts we’ve had.||But what made the biggest impression was the staff. Everyone we met was so kind, welcoming, and helpful. It didn’t feel fake or forced — just genuinely friendly people who made sure we had a great stay.||Karl Johan Hotel has such a warm and relaxed atmosphere, but still feels classy and professional. It really made our trip to Oslo feel special. We’ll 100% stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting the city!

The hotel is very well located , on the main Street of Oslo, just 15 min by foot from central station. The room was super small but functional and comfortable. The main problem is that we were by the street and it was extremely loud at night, late into the night. If you stay there make sure to ask for a room away from the busy street. The hotel has a nice lounge with a balcony and you can buy drinks and snacks. It also has a nice gym. The highlight is definitely the free amazing breakfast. It takes place in a very large and bright room with a high ceiling and skylight roof and offers a remarkable array of delicious choices. Definitely worth staying there for the quality of the breakfast ! The staff is also extremely nice and helpful.

This beautifully restored 1899 historic building made for a memorable stay. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful assisting with everything from directions to taxi bookings (negotiation required) or a fixed price Uber.||Highlights included a delicious and varied breakfast spread each morning, and the stunning glass elevator, which adds a touch of grandeur to the experience.||The layout reflects the charm of a heritage property, with winding corridors that are easy to navigate. The only minor challenge was locating the fitness centre, tucked away in the basement via the back stairwell.||Our standard room was compact but with a large bathroom. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the mood lighting created a cozy ambiance. The only quirk was the wardrobe door—it opened awkwardly and would’ve been better hinged on the opposite side. Still, a small detail in an otherwise excellent stay.

Look no further! This is the place to be in Central Oslo. The location is perfect. The rooms are great, spacious with very comfortable beds, and all amenities were perfect. The breakfast buffet was awesome, one of the best I have had in a hotel! Really well done! Well recommended. Will be back soon.

We stayed at the Karl Johan Hotel in Oslo late-June, and on the third of our 5-night stay, we woke up at 3:30 AM in confusion and shock: Our ceiling was leaking in several places. Not dripping, but fairly steady streams of water pouring down. The rooms have no phone so I took a quick video and ran down to the front desk, where Delina was very helpful. When she was finally able to come up to our room, she had to use towels, pails and even a coffee pot to contain the flow. Long story short: we packed hurriedly and transferred to another room, where we struggled (in vain) to go back to sleep. ||When you stay in a hotel, you pay for security and a good night's sleep. That is the legal contract of service. We did not get what we paid for that night. ||What bothered us wasn't the leak (accidents happen, after all) but management's casual attitude toward it. We were told the manager won't be in until Monday (it was Saturday night). On Monday morning we were told the manager only comes in around noon. We left a message but never got even the courtesy of a reply. Certainly not an apology or even as much as a complimentary beverage. You call this hospitality and service? Oslo is one of our favorite cities on the planet, but we will never stay at this hotel again; you might think twice about it, too.

All was terrific! The service, breakfast, location, and ambience were wonderful. I booked a single room - which was really a single room - but so cleverly designed. I had everything I needed and did not feel cramped at all. The toiletries were a treat. Highly recommend!
