I had no reason to stop in Trier except for visiting the Karl Marx House.
Before the trip, I was genuinely excited about the opportunity to see the place where Marx was born. Ironically, although Karl Marx was a German, this is almost the only place in Germany dedicated to commemorating him.
Unfortunately, the visit was quite disappointing. The exhibition focuses almost entirely on very superficial facts, information that anyone with a basic knowledge of Marx would already know. Why would anyone travel to a relatively small city, where few people speak English, to visit the Marx House if they know nothing about Karl Marx in the first place?
Moreover, the wall texts are not particularly insightful. They give the impression that the author has a limited understanding of Marxism. German left-wing parties are presented as if they were all direct inheritors of Marx’s thought, which is a simplistic and misleading view. At the same time, the narrative reveals a faint but noticeable negative bias toward the Soviet Union and China.
I left the museum feeling disappointed and rather sad.
