Stepping into Kasagiya is like stepping into a different era—one infused with warmth, tradition, and quiet elegance. I arrived a bit late in the afternoon and was gently reminded that they close at 17:30, something I already knew—but I was still thrilled to have made it in time. To my absolute delight, I had the entire place to myself. The atmosphere was serene, with a calm, nostalgic charm that wrapped around me like a warm blanket. I indulged in a beautifully delicate dessert paired with delicious tea, brewed and served in a classic copper teapot that somehow made it taste even better. Every detail was intentional, steeped in heritage. What made the experience even more special was the short but meaningful exchange I had with the kind man serving me—who turned out to be the fourth-generation owner of this incredible family-run establishment. There’s something truly profound about being welcomed into a place where tradition has been carried on with such care and passion over the decades. Note: It’s cash only! So come prepared—and come ready to slow down, savor, and feel the quiet beauty of this remarkable Kyoto treasure. An unforgettable moment. A must-visit.

We received a recommendation from a local to come here for traditional Japanese sweets and we are so glad we went! This establishment truly sticks out in comparison to the hyper touristy and gimmicky places in the area. As someone who is not accustomed to eating azuki beans for dessert, and didnt enjoy them in the past, this was the first time that I realized just how good they are when made fresh and with care! The matcha shave ice was also delicious and perfect for the hot weather and for those who have a sweet tooth! You feel as though you are entering someone’s home when you come to Kasagiya and it is awesome to be able to experience that in a city as big as Kyoto.

Very cute little cafe to have a quick rest on the bustling Gion streets. Fairly priced and portioned and especially great when the weather is cold. Quite enjoy their red bean soup in particular!

Love this little gem away from the bustling but very commercial shopping street from Kiyomizu-dera. Only 4 small table. We were lucky to get a seat immediately before they close the shop shortly. The owner will serve you tea while preparing your order. We ordered the red bean mochi. The red bean is so huge and nicely cooked to the right sweetness. It just heaven when it pairs with matcha. I don't mind to climb up the street again just for this authentic Japanese tea house!

We stopped here for a break from a bustling Gion. Very calm place with delicious shaved ice! The ice was very nicely shaved, no huge pieces and not too sweet. The warm green tea helps to warm up a bit the palate before brain freeze 😅. Highly recommend it!

While many other tourists take the route of going to trendy and modern restaurants and cafes, as tourists in Japan we try to find local spots that serve authentic (and delicious food). This spot does exactly that. Despite being on a busy street, it is clear that this was not only a local spot, but also an incredibly good find. We loved the cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and AMAZING food. We all agreed that if we lived in Japan we would be eating here everyday. This is a must-go to cafe for adventurous travelers who love hidden gems and trying new foods.

I don’t remember how many times I came back, it’s my favourite dessert shop in Kyoto all the time. As you know, the matcha dessert shop on the street is everywhere in Kyoto, but you want to have local Kyoto style dessert, must be here. The red bean soup with fried rice cake is perfect, and the bun of Kyoto is what you want as well. It’s not same as other dessert shop, here is more hidden and quiet. However, the delicious taste with peaceful Kyoto style is my home taste. Thanks so much, and expect to see you next time.
