On 9th August 2025, we had the pleasure of celebrating my father’s birthday at Kashmir Restaurant. This visit was extra special as my father had worked there as a part-time staff almost 30 years ago. From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. The owner, Mr Mohan, warmly welcomed us and graciously ordered their bestselling dishes for us to try. Each dish was absolutely delicious—flavourful, aromatic, and uniquely prepared, offering a taste that stood out from the usual North Indian food we’ve experienced at other restaurants. It was a wonderful dining experience filled with nostalgia, excellent hospitality, and unforgettable food. We truly enjoyed our time and will certainly return in the future.

Tonight we felt like an Indian Tandoori meal, and took the advice of a local, who gave a choice of 3 different restaurants. We settled at Kashmir, as it was close by, and the reviews were mixed. We were met at the door by the owner and his staff, and greeted with much laughter. There is a sign outside that says, this is the best Tandoori chicken in the world. So, challenge accepted. Once inside, the owner made many suggestions of what dishes to have, to complement what we were intending to order, and that’s fair enough. The tandoori chicken was very tender, and tasty, as well as the lamb rib/cutlet. Just a word to the wise, read the menu prices for the lamb, as it may come as a shock later. The curries we had included a daal, sizzling chicken and a prawn vindaloo. The vindaloo was a touch too salty, but that was rectified by the kitchen. Also, the yogurt and mint condiments were very good, and complimented the taste. The meal ended with a complimentary sweet each, that was nice. The heat of the spice I quite liked, but for those who cannot eat hot spice curry, please tell the kitchen for a milder version. I also need to compliment the wait staff, and the head madam, all very good people. My only criticism is that the meal was very expensive for Indian cuisine, given that this type meal is expensive in Australia. Not quite what we expected in Penang, given the level of competition around. Having said that, the meal was very tasty. Just make sure you pick from the menu, and make your own choices.

A regular visitor to Georgetown for 25 years, have visited many Indian restaurants but I came across the Kashmir 20 years ago and it’s our first food stop. The best Indian food outside of India & their Tandoori is excellent, the tandoori mutton is as tender as lamb. They also apologise for being the cheapest draught beer in Penang

Fantastic food! Owner is present all the time & the staff is proud to work here! It’s quite seldom you see both the owner & staff that are so proud of the food! I don’t know why it’s only 3.9 stars on google as this is such a great place, right across Kenny Hills Bakery as well with such a great atmosphere & view, I was recommended by a friend to come here, since it’s 3.9 stars I wouldn’t have gone otherwise but I’m so glad I did! And I decided to go twice, I’m here for 2 nights but since it’s so good food here I decided to have dinner here both nights! Fantastic!!

Some of the best Indian food I’ve ever had. Known for the chicken tandoori (which was lovely) but the star was the Mutton. Soft and tender to the bone. Perfect amount of fat and needed nothing extra but some lime. Yogurt is especially fresh and the butter naan we had was beautiful in texture. Thank you to Saiful for the impeccable service and passion for your cuisine. You made it a wonderful experience for us. Worth what you pay for, a must-go when in Penang.

Some say it's too expensive, but the quality is very very high. The tandoori chicken is not very filling, but if you like Indian food, you'll love this place. Make sure to visit in the evening on an outside seating area when it's not too hot. You'll feel the Penang vibe. Additional written I am so impressed then I ordered others food. Correctly I pay190RM.BUT I DON'T KNOW HIGH QUALITY INDIAN FOOD. LET YOU CHECK PRICE BEFORE ORDER HAHA 😆

I have not had Rogan Josh this good since being in Leh. The Tandoori Chicken really is the best in the world - better than I had in Amritsar or Chandigarh. Very high quality yogurt and Nan too. One of the rare restaurants you run into that takes pride in releasing endorphins and being the absolute best. I still can't believe the quality I had - just wish I could get this back home. Penang doesn't know the gem it has.

Yelp
For lunch we headed to Kashmir to have some tandoori chicken. The owner welcomed us heartily and recognized my brother who had been there before. We ordered drinks and the tandoori chicken with a side of garlic and a side of cheese naan. Also some vegetable pakora. Instead of placing the serving on the table and letting us serve ourselves, they served us. The server came around with the dish and portioned our individual servings. The owner also made suggestions on how to eat the dishes and spooned it onto our plates. It was interesting and kinda like being at a friend's house. The pakora was tasty and not hard from over frying. The tandoori chicken was tender and moist. He liked it a lot. Said it was the best he's had. My brother said they're known for this dish. The garlic naan had actual slices of garlic in it. The meal was delicious and it was worth stopping by. The owner even took photos for his customers of them standing in front of the restaurant. This included us and it was fun to have a photo to remember the meal. Street parking.

Yelp
This somewhat odd-feeling restaurant located on a triangular spit of converging streets has very good food. I came in expecting to order tandoori chicken or one of the other things that so many people had recommended, but I let the hostess convince me that I really should order the basmati shrimp, which was excellent and I would order again. The well-worn restaurant, a few steps above street level, has a decent-sized dining room and a wrap-around porch with a number of small tables. At least when I was here, the dining room had wide open doors on either side letting in a good cross-breeze to compliment the fans and, I think, low-level air conditioning. The windows and porch look over a good-sized intersection -- looking up the street in the direction of Chowrasta Market, a couple of blocks away -- which currently separates the restaurant from an occasionally very loud construction site. (The latter brings the plus side of getting to watch heavy equipment operate while you eat, though.) On the mid-afternoon that I was here, the staff was forcing everyone to eat at the small tables on the outside porch, which I thought was odd, particularly since it was a toasty day and the sun was steadily eating away at the shade on the porch. (Fortunately, all the diners were singletons or pairs. I really wanted a larger group to show up to see if they too would be forced to the small outdoor tables or if they would merit the cooler inner sanctum.) The staff was friendly and helpful. I did get a sense of their possibly recommending the more pricey options on the menu as I talked through it with them, but that may have been my imagination.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of eating here twice on trips to Penang. The hole in the wall vibe is enhanced by truly legendary wallpaper, and the location on the corner offers the feeling of being in the center of town, especially when sitting outside on the veranda. I've enjoyed every dish I've eaten, but the most memorable highlight has to be the mutton vindaloo - as good as I've had anywhere!

Yelp
Best Indian food I've had in Malaysia by far. Lovely staff and low prices. Nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.
