Where to Learn About Sake in New York City

"A Bushwick taproom founded by a Tokyo native that doubles as a relaxed communal living-room-style spot for a creative crowd. Regular programming ranges from live jazz and book events to food pop-ups, and guests can view brewing tanks during guided “School of Sake” tours that explain different styles and production methods." - Shana Clarke

Pioneering Sustainable Sushi, at Rosella | The New Yorker

"Rosella highlights Brooklyn-made sake from Kato Sake Works in Bushwick, started by a Japanese expat who produces a bright, smooth junmai that complements Miller’s American-sushi approach." - Shauna Lyon

Great sake, super cool owner. I miss the sake ice cream, make some more! On Fridays and Saturdays, they usually have a jazz band playing, that's cool. But at the end of the night, someone would kinda awkwardly go around with a Venmo QR code, stand in front of you, to ask for a tip, that's perfectly fine. But the whole thing is always so in your face, it makes me so uncomfortable 🤷‍♀️

Oh man I don’t know where to start. Such an amazing community spot. What Shinobu and Ayako built here is truly amazing. From the amazing and well curated events (music, food, book clubs) to the incredible sake and cocktail program, I’m just constantly being blown away. I know Olive Garden already took it, but I really feel like KSW better embodies the motto “when you’re here, you’re family.” Met some of my best friends here :)

Google
They do have some of the best cloudy sake. It is legit really good and I come to the area just for it. (Their Doburoku is the best). Sometimes they do have live music as well. I applaud to Whoever open this place as it is really good and such a nice departure from the usual beer breweries.

Google
Well worth the trip in from Manhattan. Easy access via the L. Imagine a hipster exploding and getting over everything. Well, it's this place. Excellent locally made sake, local jazz artists you've never heard of, and all walks of life. It's great. You should visit. Try the sampler to start then try everything else.

Google
Very welcoming bar that supports the community. There's a pop up yakitori food vendor outdoors that has a wide range of choices. The flight of sake for $20 let's you sample three of their most popular types and I'm a big fan of their junmai. There was live jazz music the night we were there and the acoustics were pretty good.

Google
Kato is awesome. I don't have a ton of experience with sake, so we decided to give Kato a go, and the flights were perfect for learning more about the flavors we liked most. Atmosphere was comfortable, the staff (Avery) was incredibly welcoming and helpful, and the playlist matched the vibes. We'll definitely be back.

Google
Low-key, cozy sake bar and brewery in a spacious warehouse. The pricing is very reasonable and the sake is delicious, especially the junmai. Tasting flight with generous portion for only $20. The service is friendly and seating is generous. There was live jazz when we walked in - great vibes and very chill crowds.

Google
Love and highly recommend this place. The sake is delicious and approachable for sake newbies, the staff is super knowledgeable and passionate, and the vibe is chill and dog friendly. The brewery tour is a fantastic deal (it includes a few drinks) and super informative—they explain the process so well that by the end of the tour you’re left with clear ideas about how sake is made and various factors to look at when identifying sakes.

Yelp
I came here with a few friends for drinks on a Sunday afternoon. Sake on tap is such a cool concept! The inside was packed because there was a jazz show/poetry reading going on, so we took our drinks outside. They have flights of their sakes, as well, but I just had a glass of the classic one. I would definitely come back to see what else they have to offer!

Yelp
As a lover of esoteric beverages, I'm thrilled I can now not only get locally brewed makgeolli for celebratory occasions in Greenpoint and make my own kir royales with cassis from the Hudson Valley, but can also enjoy an array of varied sakes made right here in Bushwick. I am no expert in sake, and so opted for the flight - in 2024, I think there are few more delightful ways of passing a late summer afternoon than over such a flight while people watching on Troutman Street. I recommend following Kato on IG as well, as they usually have pop up food stalls on the weekend and live music on occasion.

Yelp
Yummy sake. Kind staff. Fun location. Hard to find any critique! Noting I'm not a liquor aficionado, so I will have a skewed perception about the quality itself. I have a big sweet tooth and enjoyed how a couple samples in the flight are sweet themselves. Good option for anyone who is indecisive/explorative/doesn't like the taste of liquor like myself.

Yelp
Its a nice hangout joint in Bushwick with great live performances and nice food pop ups on the side. Loved their sake-yummyyyyy! They also have outdoor space and on a nice weather day its so wonderful sitting and chatting with friends. Great spot for happy hours too.

Yelp
Craft sake brewery with live shows, tastings and food popups. Very chill vibes. Fun collabs and popups are fresh and relevant. It makes me want to go back on a regular basis. Also great sake options obviously.

Yelp
had no idea this spot was in the neighborhood! i love a good glass of sake and was interested to check out a spot that makes their sake right in brooklyn. went on a weekend early afternoon and opted for the flight to try all of the options-- the bartender was super friendly and explained the differences between the three types which i appreciated. dont know if id say i would choose to drink the nama again but the junmao and nigori were pretty good!

Yelp
This is a find. EXCELLENT sake brewed on premises. Our sake-tender, Leah, was very knowledgeable and a lot of fun.

Yelp
Seriously, some of the best Sake I have had. Definitely try the frozen sake cocktail. Great owner and staff too!

Yelp
I've come here a few times since throughout the soft opening and have always enjoyed my experience. Each sake they serve is delicious and the service is friendly. My personal favorite so far is the Yuzu one! Love the vibe inside, as it's bright and airy with some seats in front a few at the bar. Definitely planning on returning.

Yelp
Popped in here randomly and it was a great decision. Overall a very fun bar in the bushwick area. I tried the flight, multiple single serve sakes and their cocktail. Very unique and enjoyable experience with great drinks. The staff is very friendly and cool people too.

Yelp
We've heard about this place for a while and finally decided to come try it out but is thoroughly disappointed. The sake was just not good, average at best. At first I thought maybe I'm spoiled because I used to work at a sake bar so I've tried a lot of top shelf sakes. But my partner who is not a regular sake drinker also thought it was bad. The sake weren't chilled right so you couldn't taste the crispness of certain sakes, and the nama (unpasteurized) lacked funkiness. And the nigori just wasn't cloudy enough for my taste. The vibe of the place is also off, it felt like we were sitting in some teenagers' garage, not a sake brewery.

Julie A.

Yelp
I was looking forward to an evening of sake, takoyaki pop-up and jazz but I accidentally spilled my freshly poured sake trying to hand the bartender back the iPad and wasn't comped another glass. We had already previously bought drinks and the bar was cluttered with glasses. We won't be back because of the rude bartender.

Yelp
This is a beautiful relaxed space with Japanese design in mind. You can see the brewery in the back and I'm sure anyone working there would be happy to take you behind the scenes for a tour. Joanie gave us a sample of each sake and all were very delicious. Even if you think you're not a fan of sake, come in and try these! They're very easy drinking and perfect for a New York summertime drink.

Yelp
Great sake bar in Bushwick. They make their sake in the back, and the place is a true delight. Wonderful place for meetings and friends.

Yelp
These people are so nice and the sake is great. They are happy to let you sample each of their three flagship kinds, which are brewed right next to the tasting room and are delicious. They are letting you try them from outside. They literally opened at the start of Corona in March, but they are jovial and have a super positive outlook. They sell by the bottle and prices are reasonable (and already include tax). Say hi and pick up a bottle for you and a friend!

Yelp
Love this place!!! This place is definitely a gem in Brooklyn. I got the Nama sake here and it is probably one of the best sakes out there!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were walking around after dinner and found this place- the owner was very generous and offered us samples of the Sake before we purchased our bottle. Highly recommend!

Su P.

Yelp
Gorgeous tasting sake. The Nigori is a must. Amazing service and super knowledgeable staff. Truly a local gem.

Yelp
It is evident even from a casual peek into the intricate details of this small brewery that this is place where great attention to detail and care is given to each pour. Ayako and Shinobu are always happy to answer questions about each variety of the delicious sake and the tasting room has the feel of a Japanese speakeasy. Now is a great time to get to know the world of sake through this great brewery with the great to go selections and I am looking forward to visiting more when all this mess is over!

Yelp
I caught this place during a pre-open and I was really impressed. Saki is something I've drank at japanese restaurants, and never that excitedly. Never thought about buying it to enjoy at home. So, it was really a new experience to have a few different flavors poured for me and explained to me. Being left to sip, and think about which appealed to me, I finally GOT what Saki is all about. It's delicious, its thoughtfully distilled and its very nuanced. I left with a real appreciation. Like, I wanted to buy a bottle to take home. (bottles weren't ready yet). Also, Saki is quite alcoholic, and the pours are like wine pours, and assuming those prices stay where they are, fun fact, you can get drunk efficiently and affordably here on exquisite flavors distilled 10 feet from the bar. Elbows up to a fun, different kind of bar experience.
