A Wine Lover's Guide to Japan's Koshu Valley - AFAR
"Budo-no-Oka is a communal wine cellar established by several local wineries in Katsunuma. It features a hotel with onsen and several restaurants, making it a convenient spot to sample many of the area's wine producers." - Carrie Dykes
This hotel, spa and wine cave is in heart of Yamanshi wine country. I would characterize the area as the Sonoma Valley of Japan. Wines featured at the Wine Cave are typically lighter and sweeter matching Jaoanese preferred qualities. It's enjoyable to taste wines from 40 wineries located in the area.

I visited the Winery for a day out and spent a few hours here. For ¥2200 you can try as much of their wines as you want.
It’s in a beautiful location and the staff were really friendly. After I struggled with my Japanese and explained I’m still learning but get nervous speaking, the staff member went out of her way to explain everything in English.
The balcony has a beautiful view of the valley and the facilities were clean and organised. I hope to come back in the future.
Thank you!

Lovely location with amazing views. Did the wine tasting, some interesting wines in Japan, especially from someone used to South African wines. Mono brought me here

The onsen was nice and the view of the vineyards was pretty. I came by tour bus after sightseeing in the area. I was disappointed with the wine tasting as they charge for tasting plastic cup and the tasting is so small. Wouldn't recommend.

The area was beautiful and peaceful. My friends and I enjoyed tasting the different wines. You're even able to purchase wines that were your favorites. Pricing is not bad either and their are restaurants on site. You can go in and out the wine cellar tasting area also to take breaks and grab a bite in-between tastings or just roam the grounds and take in the scenery.

This is an excellent place to get an overview of the Yamanashi wineries, and the different expressions of the Koshu and Muscat Bailey A grapes. At ¥1500 it's amazing value for money: you'll pay ¥1000 at many individual wineries for tasting. That includes a tasting cup and serve-yourself access to more than 100 wines. You can exit the cave (as I did after the whites, to get some food in the cafe) then return. Wines are available for purchase and there's a good range of prices. The grounds are very pleasant and there are great views across to the mountains.

Not a good introduction to Yamanashi wines.
Simply terrible customer service. They charge you ¥2200 and half of the bottles are empty and the staff ignores you when you ask questions or ask them to replace the bottle so that you can try that particular wine.
Noted elsewhere, but there’s also no place to spit out so if you encounter a wine from the few bottles that are actually there and you determine that you don’t like it, you have to swallow anyway 😆

4 stars.
The ability to taste 150+ wines for as little as ¥1.5k is amazing. Good number of nearby restaurants and other attractions make this a great way to try different local producer's style and wines when you are hardpressed for time
