A Wine Lover's Guide to Japan's Koshu Valley - AFAR

"Katsunuma Winery offers a tasting room for wine sampling and has an on-site French restaurant, Le Vent, where visitors can pair their wines with meals like the chicken asparagus salad, which pairs wonderfully with its Aurga Branca Clareza, a crisp white made from the koshu grape." - Carrie Dykes

2004 Toriivilla Imamura Cuvée Yuka This wine is made from Muscat Berry A and Black Queen grapes. The 2004 vintage was considered a great year with little rain and abundant sunshine, resulting in a special "cuvée" that is said to age well for many years. It is a red wine with flavors of plum and blueberry jam, along with aged notes of tea leaves, and a mellow, rounded taste.

Tucked on a very small street. The winery is a hidden gem. They are very English friendly. They have a dispenser and the tasting is self led but they walk you through the taste. Also, it’s the first ever Japanese wine that was imported into the EU. The story it lovely and the people are very nice.

Katsunuma Winery 勝沼醸造. 💭 While in Fujikawaguchiko we took the time and went out of the way to visit Katsunuma Winery 勝沼醸造 in Yamanashi wine prefecture since we’re in the neighborhood. It’s one of the well known wine producing prefecture in Japan. The landscape is covered with grape vines. A far cry from Tokyo’s towering steel and glass structures. Their winery is located within a quiet neighborhood and very unassuming. Houses in a traditional Japanese residence. Inside a lot of woods and timbers are generously deployed creating a very warm and welcoming ambiance. The winter crowd was less only another couple besides us. The tasting starts at JPY 1,650 per person (JPY 1,000 as a prepaid amount and JPY 650 for the card which you can take home as souvenir). You can top up the card for a minimum of JPY 550 for additional tastings of the original prepaid value is consumed. You can take your time and take your drink outside to view the idyllic landscape of Yamanashi but it was too cold for us. They also have an upper viewing deck. We tried both the whites and the reds but the one that left the biggest impression on us was the whites namely the local grape Koshu and Arugabranca. They are open from 9:30am to 4:30pm Japan Time during winter season. A must visit for its beautiful landscape, vineyard and wine tasting house.

Beautiful winery. We went to another winery in Kochu and this winery tasted a lot better to us. I found a really nice red wine with fragrant barrel flavor (see photo). You need to purchase a wine tasting card then choose whatever wine to taste from the machine. You can taste approximately 10 wines with that card, and it can be top up.

Service was pretty cold. There was no explanation of this winery's history, or recommendations for top wine. Just simply letting you pay immediately to drink the wine. It made me hesitate to stay long, or even purchase any bottles

This winery is great to get to try a lot of different wines for only 1500 yen. After buying a prepaid card, you can relax and take your time as you taste your way through each wine. The outdoor patio is very scenic and pairs great with wine. A very relaxing and easy experience. Bottle prices range from 1800-5500 yen.

We had a great time during our visit to Katdunuma Winery. The staff is very friendly, helpful and knew what they were talking about. We also had the honor to meet the owner of the winery and he proudly presented his wines. They have a nice selection of quality wines that you can taste and buy. The winery had a beautiful terrace next tot the vineyards and even a rooftop terrace. I would really recommend anyone to stop here if you are in the area!
