Things I Want to Try in NYC

Google
I absolutely love Kawa Sushi! They are my go-to sushi place in my area. They have delicious and fresh sushi, as well as an array of other dishes. I personally love their spicy tuna roll, tuna pizza and gyozas. They have a small seating area, and also offer take-out and delivery. I highly recommend!

Google
This was truly some of the best sushi I have had. The miso soup and seaweed salad were also excellent . Great quality, quick service, All items were included in the bag nothing was forgotten. Not a bad walk from Chelsea. Definitely will be coming back. Oh and did I mention the deep-fried ice cream? We tried the vanilla and it was delicious!!

Google
So far, one of my best sushi experiences in NYC. Good portion, delicious food, reasonable price, friendly staff, small but cozy space 👌. Definitely coming back for this local sushi restaurant. Very nice.

Google
Loved it! Stumbled across this place by chance as I was hungry and on my way to take photos of the neighborhood Halloween decorations. I noticed they had regular customers dining in ("see you next week"), and the vibe was very chill and cozy at the same time. The service was attentive yet informal. Don't expect anything fancy. Great value per price, I ordered a bento box that I really enjoyed. It came with a side of soup and rice. Fast service, great taste.

Audrey

Google
Ordered the Mt. Fuji roll and it was so yummy. Friendly service and clean store.

Google
Food was sooooooo amazing. Sushi melts away in your mouth. Flavors are fantastic. Great prices for good portions Service was so attentive. Spaces to sit and eat and looks like their turn around time for ordering out it good too!! (Visiting from bmore)

Google
Was craving sushi and walked by this place for lunch. They have $18 chirashi lunch set which comes with miso soup, salad, many thick slices of sashimi, and rice. Seems like a great deal - the fish is fresh, rice is nice warm and soft, and miso soup comforting. The salad is meh - kinda too watery when you bite into it and the dressing not so good.

Bryant Li

Google
Sushi was extremely good for the price. Servers were super nice and brought out the food extremely quick. Will definitely come back and try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Relaxing spot with EXCELLENT sashimi, vegan rolls (try the "Special Roll Combo Option D" 1 Sweet Potato roll, 1 Avocado roll and a Yassi Roll) $18.75). The staff is helpful and polite and the soundtrack always features calming jazz piano music. Their huge picture window allows you to enjoy some of the best people watching in town. Kawa Sushi is a quiet and refined spot to feel like a human being again. Shhh don't tell too many people.

Yelp
Kawa Sushi also goes by AKA sushi. It shows as AKA on grubhub, but the store front says Kawa. I had the sushi lunch special...for $14 you get 12 pieces of sushi. Yes, eating sushi in the smack middle of summer has its risks. But it was good and at unbeatable price for the area. If you are unsure about the sushi due to the previous reviews, a solid item is the megimaki rolls. They are delicious, juicy, flavorful; tender meat with crunchy scallions. The menu offers many more lunch specials that are not sushi...and they are affordable and flavorful.

Spicy Tuna Boys ..

Yelp
3/5 overall, 4/5 spicy tuna roll BT: pickup. Nice little spot. Affordable. Sweetness to the rice. Smooth balanced tuna filling. Not too salty but good flavor depth. The tuna sashimi was not great, but we're not here to talk about that! LS: Enjoyed the spicy tuna, though a little lacking on the tuna flavor side. Not overly salty, and rice was perfectly gummy.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
The place is small but still has seating. I ordered the tuna roll and it was good. A little pricey but a nice portion. They have a variety of items on the menu. The staff was nice and the food came up quick

Yelp
Quality was very good, great service! The fish slices were perfect size and not too thin which is something most places lack in. Fish was fresh and didn't taste frozen. Only $18! *Extra charge for eel sauce and spicy mayo* wasn't aware but was expected. Would definitely come back after work again

Yelp
Great bang for your buck. Was looking up a place to get a bento box nearby. Initially had sticker shock at the price (yes, this is NY, I know). I don't think I've had a bento box with more food/protein anywhere ever. For what you pay, you really get a fair portion. We got 1 Tiger roll and 1 bento box and it was more than enough for 2 people. The ambiance was fairly average, the place is somewhat small, the service was great.

Yelp
Did take out here during my lunch break and was presently surprised at the quality and price for the food. I did the 3 maki roll special which came with miso soup and salad and came out to around $17 which is super reasonable. Usually with take out sushi sometimes the quality is iffy, but this meal was better than expected. There was ample fish and tasted pretty fresh. I got the salmon avocado, the yellowtail jalapeño and the shrimp tempura roll. All were great. During lunch when I walked in it didn't look like anyone was seated inside, but would definitely do take out here again.

Yelp
FOOD/DRINK: 1.) Milky Way = spicy salmon crunch roll topped with salmon, white fish, tuna, yellowtail. Yum! Their sushi is so good, soft, fresh .... Mm this roll was just what I wanted, slightly spicy bc crunchy with yummy sashimi on top 2.) Spicy Girl = haha my pal ordered this but it was good too except I didn't want the spiciness so I took off the red dab of hot sauce on top. Even their wasabi was the real kind, that helps clears your nasal passageways. Great wasabi rush They have wine and beer, and sake. I can appreciate that for next time if I feel like drinking. SERVICE: So nice and they refilled our tea so much and checked in on us. Great super. ATMOSPHERE: Pretty small, pretty basic, not much of a vibe but based on the food alone I would totally come back. And because it's conveniently in my favorite neighborhood so ya. I'm pretty sure they were the same who delivered sushi to me this one time late and it was also amazingly good. Anyway I'm a fan.

Yelp
Please read the past reviews carefully - do not come here unless you want to risk severe food poisoning. Came with a friend to experience the $13.25 lunch deal - 2 rolls of sushi and a soup and salad. I won't deny, it was one of the best sushi lunch deals I've seen in the city, however, at the cost of my own health. An hour or so later I began to feel extreme stomach pain and now I am full on sick with food poisoning. I believe it was my tuna rolls that looked like blended up tuna carcass, super red, and extremely moist/slippery consistency. It honestly felt like I was eating human flesh ground by Armie Hammer, so much that I stopped eating and asked for the check immediately. I knew something was off based on the dirty display of raw fish behind the counter. I wish future patrons of this establishment the best of luck. I will not return.

Yelp
Delicious food + cozy vibe in the west village. Service is attentive; old-school cool. Sit near the window for great views of the city going by. Bring a magazine from Casa, dine solo or bring a date. This is a great spot!
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
Two words: food poisoning. Looks like a dump, food equally as bad. I shared three rolls, none of them tested rotten but within two hours I knew I was doomed. Avoid.
google avatar

Mimi C.

Yelp
This sushi place is seriously the bomb dot com. The fish is so fresh and creamy. Udon was very flavorful and the meat was so soft. It wasn't too salty or heavy and they give you a huge portion. I couldn't finish it. The rolls were soooo good. Other places give you a lot of rice in your rolls to try to cheap out but not this place. I got the salmon avocado roll and the amount of rice was perfect, big pieces of fish, and big pieces of avocado. So worth it!! I got the salmon wrapped crab and it came with a yuzu wasabi salad that was really delicious too! There were also some golden kiwis included which were really sweet and paired well with the dish nicely. Edamame is always good, these were seasoned well and stayed hot for a while. And I would definitely recommend the shrimp! That and the salmon rolls were my favorite.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Came here for a quick dinner on Saturday night and the food was bland. I haven't had a bad meal in the city for awhile. I had zaru soba, and my partner had nabeyuki udon. The soba was very bland and the dipping sauce was not tasty. The udon broth was overpowered by shiitake flavor. Prices are cheap. Staff were nice.

Luca B.

Yelp
so delicious ! fast and the best servers!! will come again! I had salmon and agedashi tofu! divine!!
google avatar

Anggie B.

Yelp
I only dine-in once in this place, Service wise, it's ok. I can say more about the food, as i had take out a few times. Their food is pretty good, i mean not amazing, but not bad. Can say 8 /10. But hey, the price is so reasonable, you get what you pay for. Definitely recommend food from this place.

Louis S.

Yelp
Very disappointed with the food & the service. Got seated & served without utensils & napkins. In addition, waited too long for food to arrive. Avoid the salad, it consisted of lettuce leaves with the typical dressing. Where were the carrot strips, tomato slices, and (heaven forbid) an additional piece of green? The biggest disappointment however, was their Chicken Teriyaki. I'm not a connoisseur of fine foods, but that did not taste like chicken to me, It had an odd texture and taste. I've been a good customer for many years, but alas I guess it's time to move on.

Freddyc M.

Yelp
Sushi was fresh and service was good. Sushi rice was especially tasty. I found it a bit overpriced compared to same quality and restaurant decor that is Uptown but all restaurant prices have gone up.
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Decent sushi! I ordered takeout and got the 3 maki lunch special which comes with miso soup and a salad. Considering the price, I thought everything was very reasonable. Was it the best sushi I've ever had? No. But it got the job done! Rating: 3.5 Stars

Yelp
The service is HORRIBLE and lacks a lot of professionalism. I order from here everyday and this time I took my parents since they are visiting.Their new card system IS NOT WORKING . It is their card system that DOES NOT take international card and the lady around 2 pm kept insisting that it is my card, Ok girl, it works everywhere except there then? I have seen a lot of neighbors complaining about the service and staff lately, it is not what it used to be what a shame. I wish the manager or owner cared just a bit about their business to change the staff. NO

Yelp
My stepmom lives in the west village and when her, my dad and I get dinner and catch up, this is our go to sushi place. It's not very large for dining in but we always get a table even though it's never empty. My stepmom always gets sashimi, I always get sushi - Kawa roll and snow crab roll are my regulars - and my dad gets both. The fish is fresh, the rolls are nicely sized and quite affordable and most importantly- delicious!! The servers are so sweet and attentive. It's perfect - a consistent, low key, local sushi spot. Their delivery and take out are also commendable!
google avatar

Krissy G.

Yelp
Absolutely unreal. I just found a METAL USED STAPLE in my avocado roll. This is absolutely unacceptable, please no body order from this place again. A STAPLE IN AN AVOCADO. How does that even happen. Can't imagine what else could be found in their food. They also will not refund my meal. SOS.
google avatar

Tom A.

Yelp
Even though our server literally like came to snatch the receipt as soon as we signed it; with an attitude I might add. And we left a good tip. Our Food was really yummy, and I was hungry so that's what was important to me. Pic attached Just FYI: the server is a young tall dude.

Lynne W.

Yelp
Visiting a friend in the West Village, I ordered shrimp & vegetable tempura. We decided to take out and eat in the park. What I got was totally inedible. This was not tempura, it was heavily breaded and so fried that you couldn't even take the breading off the pathetically thin strips of shrimp and impossible to remove from the vegetables. The miso soup was like water. I threw the entire meal into the garbage.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
My friend and I ate here and both got serious food poisoning after. Water also tasted bad.

David R.

Yelp
Back to five stars! In my last review, I had criticized Kawa for their sometimes curt phone manner. No more! Always polite and efficient and the sushi remains consistently good.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Sweet staff. Cozy spot. Food is great. .

Claire D.

Yelp
Literally such an amazing restaurant. The staff was nice and the food was amazing. It was quiet and small which only added to its charm. I'd go there any day.
google avatar

Lizette H.

Yelp
Pleasant cozi- perfect for intimate chats and friendship bonding or whoever u like to bring here with.. or even sit alone and enjoy the window view " people watching". Price is extremely reasonable and food was delicious. I definitely would make this my sushi village spot.. they were pretty nice.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
I come to Kawa because they have cucumber sushi rolls in replacement of rice on their menu (naruto). It's a great choice for someone on a low carb / keto diet! I thought the service was prompt and friendly. The waitress was always filling our waters and checking in if we needed more ginger, wasabi, etc. The best is that prices are affordable for west village! I'll be coming back.

Arden L.

Yelp
Best sushi I've ever had no cap! Very fresh and never a problem ordering through grub hub.
google avatar

Shayan S.

Yelp
This place is by my work, so it's convenient but it's really nothing to write home about. I'll probably come back but only because there's no other sushi spot near by and I inevitably will need sushi again. Really bare bones. No ambiance inside, very generic. I honestly think it's too expensive for what it is. The eggplant with miso for appetizer was flavorful. Miso soup was disappointing. Rainbow roll and Rock n roll were fine. Nothing about this place rocks my world or even gets me a little bit excited.
google avatar

Jay K.

Yelp
Simply fantastic place to grab a couple of sushi. Its quality is great. I ordered salmon sake. It was so good that I decided to order two more! It tastes buttery. Went very easy and smooth in my mouth.

Aria L.

Yelp
Came for a quick bite & service was amazing!! I loved their salmon sashimi & salmon avocado roll

Olivia V.

Yelp
Hole-in-the-wall spot that you'll regret missing out on. The sushi is so great; portions are huge, fish is super fresh, and the menu is diverse. And prices are so reasonable. I live across the street and come here at least once a week. I can't get enough and I'd really be lost without it in the neighborhood. The fact that it has such a low rating blows my mind. Also, the service is impeccable - both for takeout and sit down.
google avatar

Mecoly D.

Yelp
Great quality sushi ordered a big order for a work lunch and everyone's food was individually packaged and labeled. Would recommend!
google avatar

Gabby Z.

Yelp
Came for the lunch special. Simplicity is key. Everything is very simple. Staff is kind. Food is tasty. Great.

Yelp
My dining partner invited me to meet him here after work; this was my first time dining at Kawa. It struck me as a small, not-so-memorable place; the ambiance, decor and food didn't move me. It wasn't special, just okay. I wound up ordering the spicy salmon crunch roll, a side of hijiki salad, and green iced tea. The salmon roll was neither spicy or crunchy. The hijiki salad was advertised as simply "seaweed salad" on the menu. I've a penchant for hijiki, so I asked before ordering and the woman who waited on our table said it was solely the green seaweed variety. They were kind enough to accommodate my request for just hijiki (so make sure to ask if you'd prefer it over the green). The salad was a li'l sweeter than I'm used to. Perhaps they added too much plum wine vinegar or mirin. Lastly, the green iced tea wasn't iced, or cold, in fact. You would figure...green iced tea...ice, right? Er, nope. Iced tea was room temperature. Ay! ::: insert deflating balloon sound effect here ::: All in all, I would not dine here or recommend this place. As a positive, the waitstaff was kind and very accommodating.

Anna L.

Yelp
Awesome spot! Super stoke I ran into it by chance. Picked up food, the lady who took my order was friendly and attentive. Didn't have to wait long for the food and the fish was fresh and at a pretty good price point. I recommend their salmon sashimi, I'm glad I ordered a lot! Will try to dine in next time.
google avatar

Yordy H.

Yelp
This is just a skip altogether. There was no flavor to be found anywhere. Sushi rice was hard, the nigiri falling apart, the fish was a weird temp, and super chewy, Imagine a really old piece of gum. The special rolls are basically flavorless burritos... There is definitely better sushi in the area, so you may want to try someplace else.
google avatar

Bonnie C.

Yelp
To rank this place officially, I wouldn't put it on my MUST go to in NYC, but i'm SO glad we came upon this neighborhood joint! It was pretty empty for a Saturday night, considering the restaurant has about 6 tables. So cozy for group of gals to catch up! Also, food was fantastic, and portions were large. We started with the Seaweed Salad, which was surprisingly large for an appetizer, and the Rock shrimp (YUM, and so freshly made). And for entree, I had the River Roll, which has more non-raw items (shrimp tempura, unagi, avocado, topped with Tobiko!) Also, glasses of wine for $4, and large hot sake's for like $12!

Vicki W.

Yelp
This is my first time ordering take out from here and the experience has been amazing! The lady at the front was very nice and friendly. I ordered the salmon avocado roll and sashimi and everything tasted fresh! I will be coming back for sure to try their other dishes!
google avatar

Shane G.

Yelp
Maki Lunch special was great and filling since it came with miso soup and a salad. The avocado in the sushi was super creamy. The waitresses were super helpful for my friend who was gluten-free. The yellowtail tuna roll was less than hoped for, but the other rolls we had were all great!

Ying W.

Yelp
Fish is very fresh. It's the best sushi restaurant I've ever eaten. Although it's small, it's very warm and the women's service is very nice!
google avatar

Erin E.

Yelp
This isn't the fanciest place you'll go, but for the price, it's very good. I've been here a couple times and never been disappointed. If you're looking for something fair priced and very satisfying, I'd say this is perfect. My favorite, and recommendation, is the Chicken Negimaki. It's an excellent comfort food.

Barbara N.

Yelp
Beware! there is no indoor dining. We went last night. Had no choice but to do takeout. There was one sushi chef filling 25 orders and one overwhelmed woman taking orders. There was an hour wait. Went to Panera.
google avatar

Kamy D.

Yelp
Can not beat the 3 rolls, soup and salad lunch special for $12.50. And it taste good!
google avatar

Micha T.

Yelp
Wonderful sushi place with excellent quality fish. We love the sushi special with salmon avocado, spicy tuna and eel cucumber rolls with soup/salad. Eel roll is particularly good, perfect amount of sauce. Quick delivery!
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
Kawa was my go-to sushi spot while I was living in the West Village. For such a tiny space, they pack in a whole lot of flavor! You will find yummy options in all areas of their extensive menu. Some of my favorite dishes include the Sea Roll (featuring shrimp, lobster, roe, tobiko, veggies, and more), the Yellowtail Jalapeno, the Veggie Udon Noodle Soup, and the scallop sashimi (layered with fresh slices of lemon). Kawa also offers an impressive selection of sake to enjoy with your meal. Despite it's limited seating, I have always found a table open. The decor is simple and elegant. I enjoy people-watching out of the large street-facing window while chowing down. I have head that to-go and delivery orders are speedy, but have never used these services myself. I am docking one star as I feel their portions are small for their asking prices. That said, they have many lunch deals that are great value.

Yelp
Please don't bring your date here, especially if you want to impress... Last Saturday, my date was ranting and raving about this "hot spot" in Chelsea. I figured it was a nice intimate setting when I first walked in, so I gave it a chance. He decided to order for the both of us, since he was familiar with the menu, and I wanted to see if it was worth the hype. Waiter comes over, and he places the order in MANDARIN?! Umm I was a little confused?! There is fifty million AUTHENTIC Japanese restaurants in NYC.. Why would we go to a Chinese owned restaurant? So I didn't complain or say anything until I tried the sushi. Salmon Skin salad was fishy and gross. I thought I was going to get sick, and I starting feeling sick from the smell. Then the sashimi and rolls come out. The rolls were so small and fell apart before I even picked it up with my chopsticks. The sashimi was NOT cut right, it was also lukewarm and after I took a few bites, I just pretended to be full. Long story short.. I got sick. Went to watch Ninja Assassin and went home to throw up. Next day my date said he got sick too.
