Kelso Conservation Area

A Magnificent Trail for Nature Enthusiasts Exploring this trail was an incredible experience, offering a perfect retreat into the lap of nature. The walkways are beautifully maintained and wind through a stunning natural environment, providing an immersive outdoor experience. At several spots, deep crevices run alongside the paths, adding an element of rugged beauty and adventure. The high lookout points are the true highlights, offering serene and panoramic views that make the effort of reaching them entirely worthwhile. They provide a wonderful vantage to soak in the surroundings and capture stunning photographs. However, navigation posed a slight challenge. While maps are available at certain points, they lack the crucial “You Are Here” tags, making it tricky to pinpoint exact locations. I had to rely on my phone’s GPS to find my way, which wasn’t ideal but manageable. The lake, though showing lower water levels due to the off-season, was still bustling with birdlife, making it a treat for birdwatchers. It was fascinating to see a variety of avian species despite the season. Overall, it’s a magnificent place for those who love trekking, appreciate high lookout points, and enjoy being surrounded by nature. Despite the minor hiccup in navigation, it’s a destination I’d highly recommend for its unparalleled views and serene ambiance.

Absolutely gorgeous place I’d love to come back and explore more! The amenities are a bit more expensive compared to similar places I’ve been like Shades Mills and St Marys. The beautiful hiking views make it worth it though! We paid ~$50 for four people. Theres boating, a water obstacle course, and a small snack/food shop. Wish boat rentals closed later than 6. Lifeguards also get off at 6! The way down to the beach is a long staircase or a hill which is not great for older folk. Change rooms are open so expect to change in the bathroom if you aren’t comfortable with that. Bathrooms are cleaner than some I’ve been to!

Beautiful place, just what I needed. But the chairlifts were not working, My knees would have loved a few more benches/stumps to sit and rest on along the way. Would love a few tea/coffee snacks stall/wending machines throughout the area wouldbemuch appreciated, as it gets pretty cold and a cup of hot liquid really soothes and energizes you.(my love for tea and Turkiye ruined me with that) Beautiful trails, first time there. Realised in a little bit that the map I got from the snack shop at the entrance does not match the values on the trails itself for a few things. Somehow the child inside me was - A little disappointed when I couldn't see a farmer on Peter Farmer's trail, - A little sad when I couldn't see any deers on the Deer Run😂, - And a little scared for my life upon reading the Turkey vultures are 6ft tall and there was abundance of food there (when I couldn't find any food source there beside me 😂😬😂😬) Overall a great experience, the small pond looked like a live painting while I was leaving, added a video, go checkout.

Nice park with many trails and routes for hiking, mountain biking and skiing in the winter. Fall colours can be seen along the escarpment trail, there are a few lookouts along the trail. If you don’t want to do a long hike, take the chairlift (open only in weekends in fall) from the bottom at east lodge to save some energy. But make sure to reserve tickets in advance on conservationhalton.ca cause it could be sold out. You can also find trail map on the website, it’s good practice to keep it handy as there are too many routes in the park so not to get lost in the woods. My personal opinion is this park’s fall colours viewing experience is better than Rattle snake and Crawford lake conservation area.

This conservation area is a scenic paradise with numerous trails which are particularly enchanting during the fall. The vibrant autumn foliage offers an impressive picturesque view. There is also a chairlift but it has minimum height restrictions so kids shorter than 42 inches are not able to ride. Our little one was quite disappointed upon learning that he fell short of the chairlift's height requirement. In addition to the trails, the beach area is lovely during the summer, providing a perfect spot for kids to enjoy the sandy beach. Canoes and paddle boats are also available for rent, offering a very pleasant experience on the water. Overall, it's a fantastic location that warrants multiple visits to fully enjoy all the diverse trails it has to offer.

A nice family friendly place with a small beach. Must do kayaking and canoeing activities when here. Book in advance to avoid line ups or out of places. Parks Pass is required to enter you can pay on site but sometimes they ran out of spots especially in Summer.

Wonderful park, we paid online before going to park save yourself some $. There's chairlift too, about $8 per person., with a minimum height limit. There is an obstacle course thing you can do, which is quite high in the trees. We didn't do it but looked pretty interesting and would give you adrenaline boost. There were kayaks for rental. There was also this high climbing tower/play area thing for kids. Looked pretty interesting. You can see it one of my photos. Toilets were clean and well maintained. There are lots of seeds woth picnic benches and benches all over the park. I loved the park. For the entrance fee I would say it's a pretty great park considering it has a lot to offer. But remember you have to pay for the services provided.

This is actually a ski hill, not really a park. We paid $27 to park (2 people), which just gives you access to the visitors centre and the bathroom. If you want to hike you either have to walk up one of the ski hills or pay $10 each to take a chair lift up the hill to access the trails. The signage is very poor. They will give you a map at the visitors centre but its poorly laid out and very confusing. We had to ask how to access the trails. It also looks like you have to pay extra to use the lake as well. The line was long to get on the chair lift so we decided to walk up one of the ski hills. This turned out to be a bad decision. The hills are quite steep and there is nothing to hold on to. By the time we got to the top we were too tired to continue to the trails and just took a few photos and left. I feel the entrance fee should include free chair lift access as it's really difficult to enjoy this park or the trails without using it.

Visited Kelso for the fall chairlift ride. Visited weekend of October 14-15, the trees were still fairly green. We paid online for the ticket, which is about $2 cheaper vs in person. However, you still have to go pick up physical copy of the ticket from the booth. Once you arrive, they will also request you pay for the park entrance $10/person. As soon as you enter, if you park at the first parking lot (located to the right) this is closest to the course challenge area, plenty of picnic area, washrooms as well. If you continue to drive ahead, there is another parking which is very close to the chairlift area. Pick up your ticket and get in line. Along the way, there's options for food & drinks. There's seating area with a bonfire. The chairlift ride itself was only 10 mins or less. Once up there, go exploring a, following a route for a hike, the further you drift away the less people you see but be careful! Keep children close, there are plenty of area which are steep cliffs. It can be very dangerous. There are signs all around which was good to see. The hike was so peaceful, amongst the trees, It's maintained well. We did often feel like we may be lost so stay vigilant, the area is large. The last ride up was 5pm which means they stay ensuring everyone is getting back down. we waited in line for about 15-20 mins. Staff was wonderful, they were cheerful, answered all of our questions. Tips: don't loose your ticket, you need it to go back down. Wear proper gear, it was cold!

*went hiking during the pandemic* First off, you have to make a reservation online. The timeslot is for 2 hours and it's highly advised that you stick to that timeframe. They ask you for your license plate number and maybe they'll blacklist you if you stay beyond your 2 hours? Don't quote me on that. The place was easy enough to find. There's a huge beach/lake right by the main entrance. It was chilly when we went in November, but I can see lots of ppl swimming or canoeing when it's warm enough. We continued driving further into the park and found more cars parked by the entrance to the ski area. We started our hike by going up a few flight of stairs to the base of the ski hills (up and over the train tracks). It was a chilly November day and the wind was blowing hard. My 3- and 4-yo decided we should hike up the ski hill. These are enormous hills and you can see the ski lifts going up and over the hills. There was an gentler path upwards where moms can push their strollers, but we followed a foot path winding up the hill. At a plateau, there were muskoka chairs and campfire setup, for the skiers to rest when they want a break from carving the snow. From there, it was just a few more steps to the top of the hill, where the ski lift ended. The view from the top was awesome, you can see the 401 and the lake by the conservation entrance. There were a handful of other ppl there on a Friday morning and I would definitely go back again with my kids. Can't wait to see how the place is when the ski season is in full swing.

Have you heard of the saying hips don't lie? Well it is true. My hips are getting old and I got wrecked during this hike. Old age went from 0 to 100 real quick. My boyfriend and I decided to go for a hike and it's been a while since our last hike last year in Iceland. We decided to go to Kelso since it is closer to home than all the way to Hamilton. Which will be our next venture. I remember there was no admission fee the last time I've been here but this time around, it was $7 per adult. I saw some sign with some price increase for the following weekend but I didn't read it carefully. I obviously misjudged how cold it was for the hike but eventually I warmed up to it. There are multiple of different trails and if you're not paying attention, it is easy to get lost. Thankfully I had my GPS boyfriend to lead us back out of the forest. The look out is beautiful. Sadly over the years, you can see more construction and buildings popping up. Kelso is probably the one place where walking people and bikers get along and work well with each other. The conservation area is also known for other stuff such as family picnics, beaches and during the winter for skiing and snowboarding.

There wasn't much description on the internet about this place nor there were too many pictures. It was slightly hard to find the trailhead and now that I look back, I like that was the case. The elevation gain was higher than what we would imagine for Ontario, it left us panting while climbing, but that combined with the length of the uphill was just about right to be called "moderate", considering my little hiking experience. After reaching the top, the walk in the woods felt like we're walking surrounded by curtains of greens, browns and reds. There were scraps, cool breeze and just the right number of people.

I was searching for the beaches around Toronto, and decided to give Kelso Conservation Area a try, mainly because it isn't too far from the city. I was a little disappointed because we were not allowed in the waters due to algae. Like many other beaches in Ontario, the sand is quite coarse. Also, you can see cars passing on hwy401 behind the water which obstructs the view. There is an entrance fee of $6.75 per adult, and I think it is not worth it if you are mainly there for the beach. I think it could be a good picnic place with a lot of shade and tables. However, I recommend other places if you are looking for a solid beach and going into the water.

I came here for some group trail running. When you run up to the top, there are some beautiful views. In addition, the beach seemed nice as well (I don't swim). They also have a ski hill as well and while not open during the summer (obviously), if you like to do hill running as part of your training, then you can use those. The only warning I'd heed is that the trails are kind of rough and not for beginner trail runners or those who aren't sure footed.

This place is amazing!! In Summer or Winter!! In the Summer you can take a cold refreshing dip in Kelso Lake which is really clean, kids can play on it's sandy beach and build sandcastles, they have a snack bar lifeguards throughout most of the day. They have tons of Summer Camps always going on here, so part of the Beach is always reserved for the Summer Camp as well as other parts of the Conservation Area. Then they have the awesome MTB trail atop the escarpment which has 16km of tracks, which are rated anywhere from beginner to advanced. As you can see by the pictures that I have uploaded with this review. You can spend a full day alone there. But a Helmet is a must, without it they won't let you on the track...so don't forget... Well and then in the Winter they have the downhill skiing and snowboarding, 12 different runs and 5 lifts. They also have rentals and lessons. So for next year I am buying the season pass guaranteed!!! The only bad thing to say about the conservation area is the camping experience, we have small kids so we wanted our first camping trip to be close to home in case we need to retreat. So we decided to camp here, the sites are huge and very nicely taken care of. Biggest downfall was the constant soundtrack of the 401, to the point that I got woken up several times during the night. Not to mention the freight cars that started moving also in and out early in the morning. So camping is a no here. But there are plenty of huge picnic areas which are beautiful and I could recommend.

~ A 3.5 stars ~ I went their for a picnic with the family... Over all its a clean place and is good for BBQs. The place we were at there didn't seem to be any BBQs you will have to bring a portable one. Then we went for a stroll and seem like there is a mini beach area as well. You can rent kayaks and enjoy the lake. Overall good place for some quiet picnic... nothing much.

We went to the picnic areas with some family. It was okay. A little weird that we had to drive down a really steep hill (I can definitely see someone rolling over that hill in their car) Other than that, it was okay. We couldnt really find the beach, but we didnt look hard enough. Suggestion : It would be great if they had like an ice-cream store where the picnic areas are.

Went: Sunday, September 6, 5 p.m. This review is only for the beach. I have not been to many beaches, maybe 4 times in my life, including this one. My date has been to many more. The water was quite muddy and very brown and was not something either of us wanted to swim in.

I had no idea this place even existed until recently. Our tri group is using the lake for open water swim practice. The beach is quite popular - especially on a hot day like today. It was a pain to get in as the entrance was really backed up. Note: it's $6.75 per person to enter the area. But I guess most places have fees now. The water has buoy lines to separate deeper areas from the shallow. Once past the shallow line the water is quite random and you can touch the ground in one spot and not right beside it. Lots of seaweed and the water is pretty murky. That being said, it is a lake. There's areas for picnics and saw lots of people bringing portable bbqs to cook on. We just went to swim, but it's a nice, close beach and I can definitely see the attraction. I don't know if I'd go back just for the beach, but it's great for open water swims for sure!

Lots of great things to do year round. The beach is nice, and not super crowded during the week or in the evening. It is busy during weekend day times. Skiing is great in winter, hiking is incredible in fall and spring. Well worth the 6.75 price of admission.

- Close proximity to Toronto - Trails are not too long but all clearly marked. - Bruce trail go through here, with short side trails. Escarpment trails offer a good view of Kelso Lake and 401 - It has quite a bit of short trials for biking - Glen Eden has a bit of everything. It offers picnic area, beach area, swimming, boardwalk by the lake, boat rental, hiking, biking... Looks like a great place for family outing with BBQ lunch then swimming or sit by the beach, while teens could do stand up paddle or hike the trails.

I am giving the four for the park overall, however the beach is not so good. We come here for triathlon training and the water is pretty murky, lots of seaweed, and as of today, goose poop everywhere. I don't mind paying an entrance fee as I appreciate us keeping up our beautiful conservation areas. But the water is pretty gross, it's too bad humans have to ruin nature. Any ways the hiking trains are gorgeous. And if you want to Tri train there is a long road you can run or bike down after.

As an outdoor enthusiast, I have to base my 4-star rating of Kelso mostly due to the proximity of the park to Oakville. This truly is a four seasons recreation area just minutes away from my home. In the winter, you can shred at Glen Eden. The hill is very small, but offers a nice terrain park on days you want to practice your tricks. One complaint of the GE is that it's filled with a lot of skiers and snowboarders who don't know what they're doing, but I guess you get a lot of that no matter where you go. It definitely is a good place to go if you're a first-timer. However, I do spend most if not all of my time in the terrain park. When it gets warmer, you can hike and mountain bike on the escarpment. The mountain bike trails offer a little something for everyone. If you go on the weekdays, it usually is not busy unless you go there during a race night. There is even a small lake to kayak or canoe, and on those hot summer days, a beach is located on the western edge of the lake to relax and swim. The beach does get really crowded on summer weekends so I would recommend swimming on the weekdays. As well, this is not a beach where you will find beautiful, bronzed beach bodies. Swimming in jeans and polo shirts is more of the norm here. All in all, Kelso is not a bad place to frequent if you live close to the park. It's an inexpensive place to get your outdoor fix in. I primarily use the park for snowboarding and mountain biking, but there are other fun uses too!

Why did they build a super highway so close to such a beautiful lake and ski hill? The 401 ruins the whole paddling experience on the lake. The highway should have been routed in a way which is favorable to the conservation area.

I have only been to Kelso during the summer months, so I can not attest to how the slopes are during the winter (have heard they are great though). First of all, the Niagara Escarpment is beautiful and the views from the top are breathtaking. If you go to Kelso, the escarpment is definitely the one thing to see and experience. On the negative side, the rest of the conservation area is underwhelming. The beach is usually dirty and the water is murky, so I wouldn't go here for the swimming. Also, the washrooms are filthy, cramped and few in number. Camping here is not a good idea at all. When I camp, I like to feel like I am really in the "great outdoors" and as far away from city life as possible. So sleeping at Kelso didn't thrill me when I was kept up all night by the sounds of the 401 which is adjacent to the park. Secondly, Kelso has always been crazy busy when we have camped here. There always seems to be triathlons going on right beside our campsite - which isn't fun when you stagger out of your tent in the morning to go the washroom. Multiple times I almost got trampled alive in my PJ's - not particularly "relaxing". My advice is go to Kelso for a day-trip to trek up the Escarpment and walk/bike around the trails. Camping here though might be a painful endeavor.

Kelso is a mixed bag of everything; hiking, beaches, skiing, scenic outlooks. It is one of the most well known conservation Halton parks which can result in crowds.
